In regard to fill loading structures such as bridge abutments and retaining walls on soft ground, the soft ground undergoes excessive deformation, which causes the lateral movement of the ground, resulting in increased risk of much damage. In this study, a centrifuge model test was conducted to check the possibility of lateral movement of a bridge abutment during back filling in a field, and a numerical analysis considering the lateral movement of the bridge abutment under the influence of the counterweight fill method applied during construction was carried out by using MIDAS/GTS as the FEM(Finite Element Method) program. The results of this study showed that the lateral movement of the abutment can exceed the allowable lateral movement value(15mm), and that the counterweight fill method was effective for the stability of the lateral movement.
The purpose of this study was to analysis the stress distribution induced by three unit PFM bridges and various cantilever bridges replacing maxillary latersal incisor. The simplified two-dimensional photoelastic models used for this study was contructed in the folio- wing way. CR/R ratio was designed to be 1 : 1, 1 : 1.25 and 1 : 1.5. The pontics of cantilever bridge supported by maxillary canines consisted of wrap-around type, rest-extension type, and simple type. 3-unit PFM bridge was constructed with traditional method. 1kg vertical static load was applied on the center of the incisal edge of the pontic. The stress pattern was examined and recorded by photography. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The magnitude of stress on the abutment root apex area of a traditional 3-unit bridge was the lowest. 2. The model of cantilevered pontic with a rest showed the relatively well distributed stress around the abutment tooth. The model with simple pontic generated the greatest stress concentration in the supporting structure of the abutment tooth. 3. As the height of bone level reduced, the rotational and vertical force increased around the abutment tooth. 4. The stress concentration of the 3-unit bridges occured on the root apex and stress concentration of the cantilever briage occured on the root apex and cervix area, 5. In the case of the cantilever bridge, stress concentrated distally on the root apex area of the abutment tooth and additional stress was observed mesially on the upper part of the root. Especially in the case of the simple pontic, was phenomenon was more apparent than the others. 6. Force applied to cantilevered pontic was transmitted to the adjacent central incisor through the contact surface. Stress was markedly observed on the mesial cervix area in the case of simple pontic and on the root apex area in the case of wrap-around type and rest-extension type.
The objective of this paper is to develop a rational reliability analysis procedure for the LRFD design provisions of bridge substructures. A bridge abutments is considered in this study. The reliability analysis is applied to determine the relationship between the major design parameters for bridge abutment and reliability index. The considered load components include dead load, vertical and horizontal earth pressure, earth surcharge, and vehicle live load. Several limit states are considered: foundation bearing capacity, sliding, and overturning. The analysis results show that the most important parameter in the reliability analysis is the effective stress friction angle of the soil. The reliability indices are calculated using Monte Carlo simulations for a selected bridge abutment. The results of the sensitivity analysis indicate that reliability index is most sensitive with regard to resistance factor and horizontal earth pressure factor.
In this study, the effect of superstructure-abutment continuity on the distribution of live load effects among the girders of integral abutment bridges (IABs) is investigated. For this purpose, two and three dimensional finite element models of several single-span, symmetrical integral abutment and simply supported (jointed) bridges (SSBs) are built and analyzed. In the analyses, the effect of various superstructure properties such as span length, number of design lanes, girder size and spacing as well as slab thickness are considered. The results from the analyses of two and three dimensional finite element models are then used to calculate the live load distribution factors (LLDFs) for the girders of IABs and SSBs as a function of the above mentioned parameters. LLDFs for the girders are also calculated using the AASHTO formulae developed for SSBs. Comparison of the analyses results revealed that the superstructure-abutment continuity in IABs produces a better distribution of live load effects among the girders compared to SSBs. The continuity effects become more predominant for short span IABs. Furthermore, AASHTO live load distribution formulae developed for SSBs lead to conservative estimates of live load girder moments and shears for short-span IABs.

In bridge abutment structures, lateral squeeze due to lateral stress of embankment placement and thermal movement of the bridge structure leads to failure of approach slabs, girders, and bridge bearings. Recently, GRS (Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil) integral bridge has been proposed as a new countermeasure. The GRS integral bridge is a combining structure of a GRS retaining wall and an integral abutment bridge. In this study, numerical analyses which considered construction sequences and earthquake loading conditions are performed to compare the behaviors of conventional PSC (Pre-Stressed Concrete) girder bridge, traditional GRS integral bridge structure and GRS integral bridge with bracket structures (newly developed LH-type GRS integral bridge). The analysis results show that the GRS integral bridge with bracket structures is most stable compared with the others in an aspect of stress concentration and deformation on foundation ground including differential settlements between abutment and backfill. Furthermore, the GRS integral bridge with/without bracket structures was found to show the best performance in terms of seismic stability.
This paper studied the probability of pounding occurred between decks and abutments of a long span high-pier continuous rigid fame bridge subjected to ground motions with local soil effect. A pounding probability analysis methodology has been proposed using peak acceleration at bedrock as intensity measure (IM) for multi-support seismic analysis. The bridge nonlinear finite element (FE) models was built with four different separation distances. Effect of actual site condition and non-uniform spatial soil profiles on seismic wave propagating from bedrock to ground surface is modelled. Pounding probability of the high-pier bridge under multi-support seismic excitations (MSSE) is analyzed based on the nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (n-IDA). Pounding probability results under uniform excitations (UE) without actual local site effect are compared with that under MSSE with site effect. The study indicates that the required design separation length between deck and abutment under uniform excitations is larger than that under MSSE as the peak acceleration at bedrock increases. As the increase of both separation distance between deck and abutment and the peak acceleration, the probability of pounding occurred at a single abutment or at two abutments simultaneously under MSSE is less than that under UE. It is of great significance considering actual local site effect for determining the separation distance between deck and abutment through the probability pounding analysis of the high-pier bridge under MSSE.
The construction of high speed railways and improvement projects of for conventional railways require straight railway lines of railway, which leads to an increase of bridge and tunnel construction. Transition zones in railways means that the track support stiffness is variedvaries in over short ranges. Sspecial attention is required in theose transition zones since because instability of train running in train and irregularities of track irregularities are can frequently occurred. Typical transition zones are between bridges and earthworks and between tunnels and earthworks. On In a transition zone, a bridge abutment transition zone has many problems in with various causes. In this paper, fundamental problems of bridge abutment transition zones is are analyzed to enhance the understanding about of bridge abutment transition zones. Suggestions for improving problems in the transition zones are proposed.
On the basis of the geological conditions of high and steep mountainous slope on which an exit portal of an express railway tunnel with a bridge-tunnel combination is to be built, the composite structure of the exit portal with a bridge abutment of the bridge-tunnel combination is presented and the stability of the slope on which the express railway portal is to be built is analyzed using three dimensional (3D) numerical simulation in the paper. Comparison of the practicability for the reinforcement of slope with in-situ bored piles and diaphragm walls are performed so as to enhance the stability of the high and steep slope. The safety factor of the slope due to rockmass excavation both inside the exit portal and beneath the bridge abutment of the bridge-tunnel combination has been also derived using strength reduction technique. The obtained results show that post tunnel portal is a preferred structure to fit high and steep slope, and the surrounding rock around the exit portal of the tunnel on the high and steep mountainous slope remains stable when rockmass is excavated both from the inside of the exit portal and underneath the bridge abutment after the slope is reinforced with both bored piles and diaphragm walls. The stability of the high and steep slope is principally dominated by the shear stress state of the rockmass at the toe of the slope; the procedure of excavating rockmass in the foundation pit of the bridge abutment does not obviously affect the slope stability. In-situ bored piles are more effective in controlling the deformation of the abutment foundation pit in comparison with diaphragm walls and are used as a preferred retaining structure to uphold the stability of slope in respect of the lesser time, easier procedure and lower cost in the construction of the exit portal with bridge-tunnel combination on the high and steep mountainous slope. The results obtained from the numerical analysis in the paper can be used to guide the structural design and construction of express railway tunnel portal with bridge-tunnel combination on high and abrupt mountainous slope under similar situations.

A series of centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate the behavior of piled bridge abutment subjected to lateral soil movements induced by the construction of approach embankment. In these tests, both the depth of soft clay and the rate of embankment construction are chosen as key parameters to examine the effects on lateral soil movements. The depth of soft clay layer varies from 5.2 m to 11.6 m, and the rate of embankment construction has two types of staged construction(1m/30days, 1m/15days) and instant construction. It is shown that, the distribution of lateral flow induced by stage embankment construction has a trapezoidal distribution. And practical guidelines to check the possibility of some lateral movement of piled abutment were investigated. The validity of the proposed guidelines by centrifuge test was compared with the observed performance by lateral movement index, F(Japan Highway Public Corporation) and modified I index(Korea Highway Corporation). Based on the results obtained, the critical values of F and modified I, as a practical guidelines, are proposed to 0.03 and 2.0, respectively.

Semi-integral abutment bridges are a type of integral abutment bridges. These bridges eliminate expansion joints on the structure and can be used in situations not suitable for full-integral abutment bridge. Moreover, Semi-integral bridges have excellent maintenance and can be economically constructed. This study is about precast wall-type blocks at each end which provide lateral support for PSC girder, as well as acting as retaining walls to resist longitudinal movement of semi-integral abutment bridge. The end-diaphragm connection between ended blocks of PSC girders can be achieved by in-suit nonshrinkage concrete. The results show that 3-point experiment of end-diaphragm beam have an acceptable performance which is so better than results of structural design. Moreover, the effects of backfill soil on semi-integral abutment bridge constructed are analyzed the behavior according to the temperature changes.
