OVERCOMING THE NUTRITIONAL LIMITATIONS OF RICE STRAW FOR RUMINANTS 3. UREA AMMONIA UPGRADING OF STRAW AND SUPPLEMENTATION WITH RICE BRAN AND COCONUT CAKE FOR GROWING RULLS

  • Forty eight growing bulls of two breed types(red Sahiwal and white Kilari), fed rice straw, were allocated to nine treatment groups: 1. Control straw (CS) 2. Urea upgraded straw (UUS) 3. UUS + 0.25 kg coconut cake (CC) 4. UUS + 0.75 kg CC 5. UUS + 0.25 kg rice bran (RB) 6. UUS + 1.00 kg RB 7. UUS + 0.25 kg RB + 0.25 kg CC 8. UUS + 1.00 kg RB + 0.25 kg CC 9. CS + 1.00 kg RB + 0.25 kg CC Liveweight gain was measured weekly during 15 weeks and tested in three analyses of variance. The results are: Urea upgraded straw produced a liveweight gain $180g.d^{-1}$ higher (P <0.01) than control straw. The groups supplemented with 0.25 kg coconut cake and 1.00 kg rice bran showed an increase of $100g.d^{-1}$ (p < 0.05) over the unsupplemented groups. No interaction between straw upgrading and supplementation was present (P > 0.10). Both rice bran and coconut press cake, supplemented to upgraded straw at a level of 0.25 kg, did not increase liveweight gain (P>0.05), but 1.0 kg rice bran increased gain by $90g.d^{-1}$ (P<0.05). A supplement of 0.75 kg coconut press cake to upgraded straw increased liveweight gain by $160g.d^{-1}$ compared with 0.25 kg or 0.00 kg coconut cake supplement (P<0.05). There were no significant differences between breed types (P>0.10) or interactions between breed and the other two main treatments (upgrading and supplementation). It was concluded. that both urea upgrading and supplementation of rice straw increase animal performance. The effect of urea upgrading was the same for both supplemented and unsupplemented animals. There was no indication of a nonlinear effect of supplements on growth.

The Influence of Dam Weight, Body Condition and Udder Scores on Calf Birth Weight and Preweaning Growth Rates in Beef Cattle

  • Records of weight, age, body condition at calving and udder characteristics scores of 425 beef cows and birth weights and periodical weights of their offspring from birth to weaning were analyzed to study the effect of body weight, condition and udder characteristic scores of dams on birth weight and Preweaning growth of their offspring. Dam's body condition (fat reserve) at calving were scored on a scale of 1 to 5 (1=extremely thin and 5=extremely fat) and dam's udder characteristics were scored on a scale of 1 to 7 (l=udder well attached with small teats and 7=at least one quarters not functional). Dams were from three distinct breed groups and were mated in single sire mating groups within each breed group for 45 days. Within each breed group and year, the dams were classified into high, medium and low based on their weights at the time of parturition. The data were analysed using covariance analysis. In general, calves born to heavier dams were heavier at birth and had higher rate of Preweaning growth. The effect of dam's body condition score on the calf birth weight was not significant. However, cows with average body condition score of 2.5 or 3.0 gave birth to calves that had higher pre weaning growth rates up to weaning than those born to calves with higher body condition score. The udder characteristics score did not affect calf birth weight as expected; however, cows with udder score of 3 (udder well attached with large teats) produced calves with higher preweaning growth rate than those with smaller teats. Based on the results, it can be concluded that maintaining animals with average body condition and weight would result in more efficient calf production. In addition, cows with well attached udder and large teats would provide a better maternal environment for Preweaning growth rates of their calves.

A COMPARISON OF COTTONSEED AND FORMALDEHYDE-TREATED SUNFLOWER MEALS ON THE PRODUCTION OF BOS INDICUS AND BOS TAURUS CATTLE ON A SUB-TROPICAL PASTURE HAY

  • Six steers of each breed type, Hereford ($H{\times}H$), Brahman ($B{\times}B$) and Brahman $\times$ Hereford ($B{\times}H$) were ranked on liveweight and allocated to three treatments, basal hay diet (Basal), Basal plus 1 kg/head/day of cottonseed meal (Basal + CSM) and Basal plus 1 kg/head/day of formaldehyde-treated sunflower meal, $Norpro^{(R)}$ (Basal + NPO). The hay was made from a pasture based predominantly on carpet grass (Axonopus affinus) growing in subtropical New South Wales, and had an estimated organic matter digestibility of 52% and a nitrogen (N) content of 7.8 g/kg dry matter (DM). The steers were accustomed to the Basal diet over 15 days and supplements offered over 42 days. Intake of the basal hay diet by steers was not increased by supplementation. When intakes were adjusted for differences between breed types in liveweight the $B{\times}H$ steers ate 25% (P<0.01) more hay than $H{\times}H$ steers (6.3 V 5.0 kg/head/d) and $B{\times}B$ steers ate 8% less hay than $H{\times}H$ steers. Supplementation significantly (P<0.01) increased liveweight gain during the experiment, being ($g/head/d\;{\pm}\;s.e.d.$) 290, 770 and $795{\pm}118$ respectively for Basal, Basal + NPO and Basal + CSM. There was no difference between supplements in the liveweight gain of steers nor between steers of different genotypes. However, there was a significant interaction (P<0.01) between breeds and treatments such that $B{\times}B$ steers gained most on the basal diet but least of the breed types when supplemented. The estimated non-degradeable fraction of N in the protein meals was 58.5 and 44.5%, respectively for NPO and CSM. Both meals increased (P<0.01) plasma urea N and rumen ammonia N concentrations.

Effect of Supplementary Feeding Strategies on the Performance of Stall Fed Dual-purpose Dairy Cows Fed Grass Hay-based Diets

  • Supplementary feeding strategies were evaluated from pre-calving throughout lactation on 24 dual-purpose Mpwapwa breed cows in their second or greater lactation, weighing 246-455 kg. The Mpwapwa breed is an established breed of 4 Bos indicus breeds and 8% of Bos taurus. The cows were penned and stall-fed individually. Eight weeks before calving to eight weeks after calving, the cows were divided into two groups and offered hay ad libitum with either 2 kg DM (L) or 4 kg DM/day (H) concentrates. Nine weeks after calving half of the cows on L-level continued with 2 kg DM/day (L-L) while the remainder received 4 kg DM concentrate daily (L-H). Half of the cows on H-group continued with 4 kg DM/day (H-H) while the remainder received 2 kg DM/day (H-L). The concentrate mixture comprised of sunflower seed cake (33%) and maize bran (67%). The cows consumed all the concentrate offered. Hay DM intake was similar (6.8 kg/day) and tended to decrease the last two weeks before calving increased again after calving. Live weight change and body condition score were similar across treatments before calving but differed after calving (p<0.05). Heavier cows with higher condition score pre-calving had a higher body weight loss and regained weight later. After treatment reallocation, live weight change and condition differed between treatments (p<0.05). Calves were allowed to suckle milk from one quarter. The amount of milk suckled and calf weight gains were not significantly different between treatments. The cows were removed from the experiment when the milk yield was below 4 kg per day. Cows on treatment H produced 6.2 kg and on treatment L 5.0 kg saleable milk/day (p<0.05) during the first 8 weeks post partum. During the period 9-18 weeks post partum the saleable daily milk on H-H, L-H, H-L and L-L were 5.2, 4.8, 4.7 and 4.3 kg, respectively (p>0.05).

Comparative Feeding of Male Dairy, Beef Cattle and Swamp Buffalo I. Economics of Beef Production

  • Due to rising trend of beef demand in Asia in the next two decades it is necessary to find additional sources of beef supply. In most Southeast Asian countries, male dairy and swamp buffalo have not yet been raised for a primary purpose of quality beef production. This study was aimed to compare growth and feeding performances as well as economic returns from feeding male dairy, beef cattle and swamp buffalo for quality beef. Thirty-six animals, 12 of each breed group, were used in feeding trial to compare the cost of beef production. Two levels of concentrate feeding, 1.75% of body weight (BW) and 1.00% of BW, were used for each breed group in order to compare feeding methods i.e. high and low levels. Within each breed group two animals of similar initial BW were randomly assigned to the two levels of feeding. The animals were fed from about 150 kg BW until reaching the final weight of about 400 kg. The results from this study showed that under the prevailing economic conditions in Thailand the cost of beef production from buffalo was lowest due to very low cost of feeder stocks, followed by dairy and beef. However, the cost of feeding per kg of BW gain was lowest in beef and highest in buffalo i.e. when disregarding the differences in cost of feeder stocks. Beef calves grew faster than dairy and buffalo, with better feed efficiencies. The results indicated that beef cattle could be more suitable for beef production for high-quality beef market, while buffalo could be more suitable for small farms where high roughage feeding is common. Male dairy calves appeared to require higher level of concentrate feeding than 1% BW in order to maintain good body conditions.

Genetic Characterization of Indigenous Goats of Sub-saharan Africa Using Microsatellite DNA Markers

  • Genetic diversity of sub-Saharan African goats was assessed using 19 microsatellite markers. Breeds were sampled from eastern Africa (Maasai, Kigezi, Mubende, North West Highland, Arsi-Bale), southern Africa (Ndebele, Pafuri) and West Africa (West African Dwarf, Maure, Djallonke). European breeds (Grisons Striped, Toggenburg), Asian breeds (Mongolian Cashmere, Bandipur) and a Middle East breed (Arab) were also included. The mean number of alleles per locus and average gene diversity ranged from 5.26$\pm$0.464 (Djallonke) to 7.05$\pm$0.516 (Mubende) and from 0.542$\pm$0.036 (Pafuri) to 0.672$\pm$0.031 (Ndebele), respectively. The between breeds variation evaluated using $$G_{ST}$$ and $\theta$ were found to account for 14.6% ($\theta$) and 15.7% ($$G_{ST}$$) of the total genetic variation. The $D_{A}$ measure of genetic distance between pairs of breeds indicated that the largest genetic distance was between Pafuri and Djallonke while the lowest genetic distance was between Arsi-Bale and North West Highland. A neighbour-joining tree of breed relationships revealed that the breeds were grouped according to their geographic origins. Principal component analysis supported the grouping of the breeds according to their geographic origins. It was concluded that the relationships of sub-Saharan African goat breeds were according to their geographical locations implying that the goats of eastern Africa, West Africa and southern Africa are genetically distinct. Within each sub-region, goat populations could be differentiated according to morphological characteristics.

The prevalence of dog erythrocyte antigen 1 in relation to breed in the Daejeon area

  • This study was performed to collect the basic data of DEA 1.1 in four small breed (Maltese, Shih-tzu, Poodle, Yorkshire terrier) and in three large breed (German shepherd, Labrador retriever and Jindo) dogs in the Daejeon area. 105 dogs from 7 breeds (Maltese=20, Shih-tzu=19, Poodle=15, Yorkshire terrier=11, German shepherd=10, Labrador retriever=10, Jindo=20) were selected and tested using the dog blood typing Kit$^{(R)}$ (Korea Animal Blood Bank Inc., South Korea). The prevalence of DEA 1.1 was 83%, that of DEA 1.2 was 17%, and there was no DEA (-) blood type identified in this study. Prevalence according to breeds was Maltese (DEA 1.1, 85%; DEA 1.2, 15%), Shih-tzu (DEA 1.1, 95%; DEA 1.2 5%), Yorkshire terrier (DEA 1.1, 91%; DEA 1.2, 9%), Labrador retriever (DEA 1.1, 90%; DEA 1.2, 10%). One hundred percent of DEA blood type 1.1 was discovered in all of the Poodles and German shepherds, and a higher prevalence of DEA 1.2 was found (DEA 1.1, 40%; DEA 1.2 60%) in Jindo dogs. The prevalence of DEA 1.2 in the Jindo dogs was significantly higher than in other breeds (P<0.01). German shepherds and Labrador retrievers may be more suitable as donor dogs than Jindo dogs in the Daejeon area. Larger scale studies are necessary from more dogs and other areas in South Korea.

Studies on the Morphology and Stainability of Chicken Spermatozoa (닭 정자(精子)의 형태(形態)와 염색성(染色性) 조사(調査))

  • The present studies were designed to investigate the morphology and stainability of the chicken spermatozoa. Semen samples were collected by abdominal massage from 10 cocks of Arbor, Acres strain (egg breed) and 10 cocks of white Cornish strain (meat breed). The semen samples were diluted with Sarker's solution and were washed. Some of the semen smear slides were stained with seven differential stain methods and was compared with one another by light microscope. In addition to the staining already compared, the length of heads, middle pieces and tails of 400 spermatozoa of two chicken breed was measured with micrometer. The results obtained from these, studies were as follows: 1. Eosin stain appeared to give good results than hematoxylin, pre-treated protease and eosin or hematoxylin stain, pre-treated protease and hematoxylin-eosin stain, carbol-fuchsin, stain and Giemsa 9 technique in differential staining of spermatozoal three portions and pre-treated protease and eosin stain appeared as good staining methods for middle piece of spermatozoa. 2. The average length of chicken spermatozoa was $90.4{\pm}4.0{\mu}m$, and the average length of the head, middle piece and tail of spermatozoa was $13.0{\pm}0.5{\mu}m$, $3.8{\pm}0.2{\mu}m$ and $73.6{\pm}3.8{\mu}m$ lesoectively. 3. The average length of spermatozoa of Arbor Acres strain was $89.2{\pm}5.0{\mu}m$ and the average length of the head, middle piece and tail of spermatozoa was $12.9{\pm}0.5{\mu}m$, $3.8{\pm}0.2{\mu}m$ and $72.5{\pm}4.7{\mu}m$ respectively. The average length of spermatozoa of with Cornish was $91.6{\pm}3.0{\mu}m$ and the average length of the head, middle piece and tail of spermatozoa was $13.1{\pm}0.5{\mu}m$, $3.8{\pm}0.2{\mu}m$ and $74.7{\pm}2.8{\mu}m$ respectively.

Prediction of Retail Beef Yield Using Parameters Based on Korean Beef Carcass Grading Standards

  • Two sets of data on carcass traits and beef cut parameters were used to investigate the relationships between carcass and beef cut measurements, which can be used to make predictions of retail cut percentages. One set had a total of 1,141 measurements of Hanwoo cattle of three different sex origins, which were slaughtered in an abattoir located at the National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Korea from 1996 to 2008. To develop prediction models for retail cut percentage with higher accuracies than the current model, another set consisting of a total of 13,389 records of carcass and beef cut traits were collected from 30 abattoirs and butcheries in Korea from 2008 to 2009. Bulls yielded heavier and leaner carcasses than steers. High correlation coefficients were estimated between amount of body fat and percent retail cut (-0.82) as well as between back fat thickness (BF) and percent retail cut (-0.62). The amount of retail cut, however, was highly correlated with body weight before slaughter (BW, 0.95) or with cold carcass weight (CWT, 0.94). Relationships between percent retail cut and measurable beef yield traits, BF, loin eye area (LEA) or CWT varied by sex class, which must be considered for development of a prediction model with high accuracy. Models of data for all breeds and sexes fit the effects of breed, sex, and interaction of abattoir by butchers, whereas models of data for each breed and sex fit the effect of interaction of abattoir by butcher only. Due to possible future changes in back fat control, we performed a log transformation of BF. Our new models fit better than the currently used model.

Comparison of Physico-Chemical, Sensory and Nutritional Characteristics for Water Extract from Bull's Bones of Different Breed (소 품종에 따른 뼈 용출액의 이화학적, 관능적 및 영양적 특성 비교)

  • The physico-chemical, sensory and nutritional properties of water extract from bull's bones of Hanwoo, Holstein, and imported breed were investigated to provide scientific information for consumers. The turbidity, viscosity, lightness(L value) and sensory scores were highest for water extract from Hanwoo's bones among three breeds(p<0.05). Total nitrogen and calcium contents, and calories were higher for water extract from the bones of Hanwoo and Holstein than the imported one(p<0.05), but no differences in the water extract were observed between Hanwoo and Holstein. In amino acid compositions, the percentages of methionine were the highest for water extract from Hanwoo's bones. These results indicated that the water extract from the bones of Hanwoo had the most acceptable quality among three breeds.
