  • A breakwater is a important structure for both calmness of harbor and protection of the port facilities from waves generated from typhoons or wind. This study adopted the rubble mound breakwater, which is one of the most popular type of breakwaters in Korea. Rubble mound breakwater had been designed by considering only static condition previously. Recently, a dynamic wave-load due to waves has been also considered in designing breakwater. In design, the wave-load is assumed as an uniform load which only acts in the front slope of the breakwater. However, the assumption is not applicable in reality. In this study, therefore, a real-time wave-load acting on the breakwater instead of the uniform load is considered, and it is assumed to be acting on the seabed too. Based on the numerical analysis, it is found that there is a significant difference in the maximum settlement compared with the result predicted by the existing design method.

  • We approximately obtain heights of cnoidal waves overtopping on a porous breakwater using both the one-layer Boussinesq equations (Vu et al., 2018) and the two-layer Boussinesq equations (Huynh et al., 2017). For cnoidal waves overtopping on a porous breakwater, we find through numerical experiments that the heights of cnoidal waves overtopping on a low-crested breakwater (obtained by the Navier-Stokes equations) are smaller than the heights of waves passing through a high-crested breakwater (obtained by the one-layer Boussinesq equations) and larger than the heights of waves passing through a submerged breakwater (obtained by the two-layer Boussinesq equations). As the cnoidal wave nonlinearity becomes smaller or the porous breakwater width becomes narrower, the heights of transmitting waves obtained by the one-layer and two-layer Boussinesq equations become closer to the height of overtopping waves obtained by the Navier-Stokes equations.

  • Based on the boundary element method, the motion responses and transmission coefficients of a moored floating breakwater were investigated in oblique waves. To satisfy the outgoing radiation condition in the far field, the fluid domain was divided into inner and outer regions. The complete solution could be obtained by applying the matching conditions between the eigenfunction-based outer solution and BEM-based inner solution. Using the developed predictive tools, the wave exciting forces, added mass, damping coefficients, motion responses, and transmission coefficients were assessed for various combinations of breakwater configuration, wave heading, mooring cables properties, and wave characteristics. It was found that the transmission coefficient for a moored floating breakwater was closely dependent on the motion responses, which were greatly amplified at the resonant frequencies.

  • Explicit approximation has been developed to estimate the run-up height on S-berm breakwater on the basis of Saville's hypothetical slope method. For the explicit expression of run-up height several relations are developed to represent the ratio of run-up height against breakwater slope with various conditions of water depth and wave steepness. For the verification of explicit approximation the results are compared with Saville's measurement data and simple expression of Delft Hydraulic Laboratory.

  • As there are so many uncertainties associated with using the determinism analysis method in the design of rubble mound breakwater, it is impossible for a designed construction to provide ultimate stability. First of all, due to the uncertainty of Load and Resistance, a safety level concerning the destruction mode of construction must be given. Then, the optimization design should be processed. After all, we can say that it is a more reasonable design method than the design used by the stability rate. In this study, an established design process is accomplished using Hudson's equation and an economic analysis with the breakwater's section is also conducted. Hudson's equation is compared to Van der Meer's equation. These results are utilized to drop a damage rate, increase the stability of construction, and determine the optimization section of the breakwater.

  • As a part of the development program of Ulsan Port, construction of detached breakwater is planned. In Ulsan Port, several oil-buoys exist. If the detached breakwaters have been constructed, these oil-buoys will be located within 1 km from the planned breakwaters. Construction of the breakwaters gives rise to changes of wave conditions on the sea areas, especially in front of the breakwater and it affects mooring of tankers, which supply oil to the oil-buoy In this study, in order to calculate standing wave distribution after construction of a breakwater, numerical model is proposed based on unsteady mild slope equation. Calculation is performed by testing different wave heights, directions and reflection coefficients of breakwater. In addition, the influence to working condition of tanker moored at the oil-buoy is evaluated by using measured wave conditions and calculated results.

  • To examine the effect of shape and crest width variation of a permeable submerged breakwater on the wave energy dissipation, Two-Dimensional numerical model with Large Eddy Simulation, which is able to simulate directly WAve Structure Seabed interaction (hereafter, LES-WASS-2D) has been newly developed. A good agreement has been obtained by the comparison between the existing experimental results and LES-WASS-2D model's results for the permeable submerged breakwater. Moreover, based on the LES-WASS-2D model, the wave energy dissipation due to a permeable submerged breakwater are discussed for regular and irregular waves with relation to its crest width and shape.

  • A composite breakwater with an upper horizontal porous plate and a lower rubble mound is proposed and studied in this work. By means of matched eigenfunction expansions, a semi-analytical solution is developed for analyzing the hydrodynamic performance of the breakwater. The semi-analytical solution is verified by known solutions for special cases and an independently developed multi-domain boundary element method solution. Numerical examples are given to examine the reflection, transmission and energy loss coefficients of the breakwater and the wave force acting on the horizontal porous plate. Some useful results are presented for engineering applications.

  • In the reliability design of the breakwater armor layer, it is often necessary to calculate its damage accumulated over the life of the breakwater. In this paper comparison is made between the two methods proposed by Hanzawa et at. in 1996 and Melby and Kobayashi in 1998 to calculate the cumulative damage of the breakwater armor layer. Tn the case where a severe damage occurs at the beginning of the life or toe breakwater, the two methods do not show significant difference, but in general the farmer predicts a cumulative damage several times larger than the latter.

  • In addition to the traditional breakwater faculty, multipurpose breakwater of vertical slit type perforated breakwater was planed and designed using the idea of waterfront and wave dissipation of breakwater. As a result of experimental test, the good hydraulic characteristics was confirmed by comparison of traditional structure, and in order to the field application the section was improved on the test of result.
