When the reactor vessel is penetrated in a severe accident of light water reactor, the molten fuel-coolant interaction including the jet breakup occurs and the jet breakup length becomes one of the important parameters. Most numerical studies on jet breakup process have been carried out using dedicated computer codes. Some researchers are trying to apply commercial CFD codes to their investigations on comprehensive jet breakup process. However, the complexity of the phenomena limits the CFD application only to hydrodynamic aspects. In the present study, numerical analysis of jet breakup under vapor generation is pursued using the STAR-CCM + code. The obtained CFD prediction of the MATE09 experiment shows jet breakup progression patterns consistent to the images taken in the experiment. Further, the predicted positions of leading head, which determine the jet breakup length, are in good agreement with the MATE 09 data. The investigation of hydrodynamic effects on the jet breakup with higher jet velocity results in a stronger shear force and earlier jet breakup process even though there exists the vapor pocket around the corium jet. In future studies, the effect of vapor intensity on the jet breakup length would be investigated further by changing other parameters.
This paper describes the effect of the droplet breakup process on fire suppression using a water-mist system, which is considered as a alternative to sprinkler fire suppression system. In the evolution of the water-mist, the droplet breakup process is an important phenomenon because it may significantly affect the droplet evaporation rate. The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS, Ver. 4.0) code, which is widely used for the simulation of fire dynamics, is used for the present simulation, and it is modified to consider the droplet breakup phenomena. The Prediction by the modified code shows good agreement with experimental data for the temperature. The original FDS predicts higher temperature about $30^{\circ}C$ than experimental data. From the results, it is concluded that the droplet breakup phenomena must be considered for more precise simulation of fire suppression process.
Characteristics of breakup of a liquid droplet impinging on a hot surface has been investigated experimentally by using decane fuel. Factors influencing droplet breakup are surface temperature, impinging velocity, droplet diameter and incident angle. Droplets impinging on a hot surface begins to breakup at $220{\sim}235^{\circ}C$. This temperature varies with impinging Velocity, droplet diameter and incident angle. For wall temperature of $220{\sim}245^{\circ}C$ and above $270^{\circ}C$, breakup probability increases as impinging velocity increases showing S shape curve. For $245{\sim}265^{\circ}C$, a local minimum heat transfer rate occurs. In this temperature range, breakup probability shows nonmonotonous behavior as functions of impinging velocity. As droplet diameter decreases, impinging velocity required for droplet breakup increases. An optimum impinging angle for droplet breakup exists which are found to be about $75^{\circ}$.
The disintegration process of initial spray from high-pressure swirl injector was investigated at different injection pressures. The transient breakup phenomena that were difficult to observe at high injection pressure were easily observed at the low injection pressure of 0.4MPa. The effect of fuel remained inside a nozzle hole volume on the penetration of initial spray was also investigated. The disintegration process of initial spray could be classified four regions: the formation of mushroom shape, the first collision, the second collision, and the development of spray, The liquid film of cup shape was particularly found in the second collision region, and the growth ratio of its length and width at low and high injection pressures were compared.
With the global shift from a carbon-based economy to a hydrogen-based economy, understanding the sloshing phenomenon and its impact on boil-off rate (BOR) in liquid hydrogen (LH2) tank trailers is crucial. Here, we analyze the primary breakup process under sloshing phenomena in a liquid fuel tank. We observe the growth of multiple holes on the sheet-like structures and the formation of ligament structures reminiscent of jet atomization. Through the extraction of three-dimensional liquid regions, we analyze the geometrical characteristics of these regions, enabling the classification of sheets, ligaments, and droplets. The present findings could contribute to understanding the breakup mechanism and hold potential for the development of strategies aimed at minimizing BOR.
In the present article, recent progress of spray-wall interaction research has been reviewed. Studies on the spray-wall interaction phenomena can be categorized mainly into three groups: experiments on single drop impact and spray (multiple-drop) impingement, and development of comprehensive models. The criteria of wall-impingement regimes (i.e., stick, rebound, spread, splash, boiling induced breakup, breakup, and rebound with breakup) and the post-impingement characteristics (mostly for splash and rebound) are the main subjects of the single-drop impingement studies. Experimental studies on spray-wall impingement phenomena cover examination of the outline shape and internal structure of a spray after the wall impact. Various prediction models for the spray-wall impingement phenomena have been developed based on the experiments on the single drop impact and the spray impingement. In the present article, details on the wall-impingement criteria and post-impingement characteristics of single drops, external and internal structures of the spray after the wall impact, and their prediction models are reviewed.
Liquid breakup under the variation of AC frequency has been studied experimentally in the electrohydrodynamic atomization. The effect of parameters such as charging voltage, flow rate, nozzle tip inner diameter and power frequency have been considered. This work was performed to investigate the experimental analysis for the effect of AC frequency on breakup process, the mapping of occurrence of disintegration region, and the relationship between the applied power and the droplet radius. The experimental results show that the increase of applied voltage in a certain frequency band leads to a reduction in the droplet size within the limits from 50Hz to 400Hz. The transition phenomena from dripping mode to spindle mode were observed under the band of sudden fall of droplet radius changing ratio, and the synchronous region were produced within the range of applied voltage from 5kV to 6kV.
A hybrid model consisting of a modified TAB (Taylor Analogy Breakup) model and DVM (Discrete Vortex Method) is proposed for numerical analysis of the evaporating spray phenomena in diesel engines. The simulation process of the hybrid model is divided into three steps. First, the droplet breakup of injected fuel is analyzed by using the modified TAB model. Second, spray evaporation is calculated based on the theory of Siebers'liquid length. The liquid length analysis of injected fuel is used to integrate the modified TAB model and DVM. Lastly, both ambient gas flow and inner vortex flow of injected fuel are analyzed by using DVM. An experiment with an evaporative free spray at the early stage of its injection was conducted under in-cylinder like conditions to examine an accuracy of the present hybrid model. The calculated results of the gas jet flow by DVM agree well with the experimental results. The calculated and experimental results all confirm that the ambient gas flow dominates the downstream diesel spray flow.
The breakup phenomena of a vertical laminar jet issuing from capillary tubes in a quiescent ambient air are investigated using a forced vibration analysis of the surface wave. Using a linear approach to the transient jet velocity, an approximate solution fur the longitudinal motion of a vertical liquid jet is theoretically derived, thus performing an instability analysis by a vibration method. The damping term of this equation is nonlinear as it depends on dimensionless parameters, a Weber number, and an Ohnesorge number. The instability condition is determined based on whether the coefficient of the damping term is less than zero or not. Uniform drop formation is dependent on the vibration frequency fur the forced vibration case.
