  • It is very desirable that a mixture gas possessing excellent insulation performance is suggested for insulation on increasing high voltage. This paper proposes a $SF_6$ mixture gas based on the factors including dielectric strength, environmental impact and economic feasibility of manufacture for the insulation in eco-friendly power equipment. A suitable-$SF_6$ content was determined to improve the dielectric strength in $N_2$ and Dry Air. The examination results of the factors revealed that a $SF_6$/Dry Air mixture gas possessing the $SF_6$ content was more appropriate than a $SF_6/N_2$ mixture gas to the eco-friendly power equipment. In addition to the selection of the suitable $SF_6$ mixture gas, insulation characteristics as a function of $SF_6$ content were described from electron-detachment mechanism.

  • Generally, speed control for Induction motor widely used in industrial field is accomplished by commercial inverter. Induction motor driven by commercial inverter causes the micro surge voltage because of high speed switching of inverter. Micro surge brings about not only the breakdown of motor but also noise in PLC control system. And they court the enormous interference in activity for production. In this paper, we suggest the suppressible countermeasure for the breakdown of motor after the consideration of productive mechanism about micro surge. Experiment is performed by inverter with LCR filler in its output terminal. As a result, we confirmed that micro surge voltage is reduced. And the suppressible countermeasure for the noise of PLC control system is suggested by theoretical consideration.

  • The plasma display panel is made of many small discharge cells, which consist of a discharge space between the cathode and anode. An electrical discharge occurs in the discharge space filled by neon and xenon gases. The electron temperature is determined from the sparking criterion, which theoretically estimates the electrical breakdown voltage in terms of the xenon mole fraction. The plasma in the cell emits vacuum ultraviolet lights of 147 nm and 173 nm, exciting fluorescent material and converting VUV lights to visible lights. The physical mechanisms of all these processes have been theoretically modeled and experimentally measured. The theory and experimental data agree reasonably well. However, new materials and better configuration of cells are needed to enhance discharge and light emission efficiency and to improve the PDP performance.

  • Recently, the circuit-breaker rated voltage is getting higher as the transmission voltage increases. To increase the circuit-breaker rated voltage, a multi-break circuit-breaker which has two or more breakers in series is adopted. For multi-break circuit-breaker, a grading capacitor is used to mitigate the Transient Recovery Voltage(TRV) and control the voltage distribution across the individual interrupter units. However, all over the world, there are many failures such as mechanical damage, explosion due to insulation breakdown. Therefore, it is necessary to study the causes of failure and the new performance verification method. In this paper, we investigate the causes of dielectric breakdown of the grading capacitors in the KEPCO power system and propose the performance verification method.

  • In the last decade, considerable efforts have been made to make a new class of solid state high power, high speed electronic device, namely, the Photo-Conductive Power Switch(PCPS), and to characterize the high-field performance of PCPS under high power, high voltage conditions. But the problem of surface flashover phenomena persist, preventing the realization of reliable and efficient high-speed, high voltage switching devices. It is essential to have a clear understanding on the physical processes behind the surface flashover problem to develop new technologies and device architectures so as to fabricate PCPS that are capable of high-field high-voltage. Also, it is imperative to identify new materials that could satisfy the requirements for high-field, high-power devices. Since surface flashover, surface breakdown phenomena is observed for all the devices that foiled at the applied field much lower than semiconductor bulk breakdown field, surface passivation is considered one of the important practical methods to improve the high field performance of the devices. Therefore, this paper was studied the main properties and mechanism of the semiconductor surface flashover before and after passivation under high electric-field.

  • Electrical conduction phenomena of $C_{22}$-quinolium(TCNQ) Langmuir- Blodgett(LB) films are reported through a study of current-voltage(I-V) characteristics along a perpendicular direction. The I-V characteristics were investigated by applying a step or a pulse voltage to the specimen as well as changing temperatures in the range of 20-250[.deg. C] It show an ohmic behavior in low-electric field, and a nonohmic behavior in high-electric field. This nonohmic behavior has been interpreted in terms of a conduction mechanism of space-charge limited current and Schottky effect. When the electric field is near the strength of 10$_{6}$ V/cm, there occur anomalous phenomena similar to breakdown. When step or pulse voltage is applied, the breakdown voltage shifts to the higher one as the step or pulse time width becomes shorter. To see the influence of temperature, current was measured as a function of temperature under the several bias voltages, which are lower than that of breakdown. It shows that the current increases to about 103 times near 60-70[.deg. C], and remains constant for a while up to around 150[.deg. C] and then suddenly drops. We have also performed a DSC(differential scanning calorimetry) measurement with $C_{22}$-quinolium(TCNQ) powder in the range of 30-300[.deg. C]. These results imply that the anomalous phenomena occuring in the high electric field are caused by the electrical and internal thermal effect such as a joule heating.ating.

  • A sensor working in outdoor may generate some faulty signal owing to dust and high temperature. This paper describes an intelligent sensor system and controller which has a reconstruction mechanism for faulty signal. The faulty signals are dievided into two types as linear distortion and non linear distortion, respectively. The linear distorted signal is due to dust, and non linear distorted signal is due to physical breakdown of sensor or high temperature. These distorted signal have been reconstructed by the proposed method based on polynomial regression method and principal component analysis approach.. The proposed method has been applied to sun tracking system working in outdoor. For a robust and precision control of sun tracker, a fuzzy controller was also proposed. The fuzzy controller controls the tracker by using the collected sensor signal. The tolerance of the position control is within 1.5 degree. To show the validity of the developed system, some experiments in the field were illustrated.

  • Kinetic studies of the pyridinolysis $(XC_5H_4N)$ of aryl dithiomethylacetates $(CH_3CH_2C(=S)SC_6H_4Z,\;1)$ are carried out in acetonitrile at $60.0^{\circ}C$. A biphasic Bronsted plot is obtained with a change in slope from a large $({\beta}X\;{\cong}\;0.8)$ to a small $({\beta}X\;{\cong}\;0.2)$ value at $pK_a^{\circ}$ = 5.2, which is attributed to a change in the rate limiting step from breakdown to formation of a zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate, $T^{\pm}$, in reaction path as the basicity of the pyridine nucleophile increases. This mechanism is supported by the change of the cross-interaction constant ${\rho}xz$ from a large positive ( ${\rho}xz$ = +1.36) for the weakly basic pyridines to a small negative ( ${\rho}_xz$ = -0.22) value for the strongly basic pyridines. The magnitudes of ${\rho}z$ and activation parameters are also consistent with the proposed mechanism.

  • Ground subsidence caused by damaged water pipe and sewer is recently increasing due to the aging of city and pipeline in many city. Although many recent studies have verified characteristics of ground subsidence due to wastewater pipe breakdown, research about characteristics of ground subsidence due to water pipe is insignificant. subsidence due to water pipe is insignificant. This study aims to identify the ground failure mechanism caused by water and sewer pipe breakdown. Accordingly, we conducted an indoor model experiment to verify characteristics of ground subsidence considering characteristics of ground and ground failure. The water pipe pressure and velocity head was considered to find out ground subsidence mechanism. Also comparative analysis is conducted by analyzing relative density and fine-grain content considering embedded condition of water pipe. When the relative density and seepage pressure is low, small scale ground subsidence can occur, but when the conditions are opposite, ground subsidence occur in large scale and expands to ground level over time. Furthermore, it is acknowledgeable that ground cavity that is formed after soil run off due to seepage in deep earth, maintains steady strength and stays on the ground level for long period.

  • Second-order rate constants ($k_N$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for reactions of 3,4-dinitrophenyl benzoates (5b) with a series of alicyclic secondary amines in 80 mol % $H_2O$/20 mol % DMSO at 25.0 ${\pm}$ 0.1 ${^{\circ}C}$. The kinetic data have been compared with the data reported previously for the corresponding reactions of 2,4- dinitrophenyl benzoates (5a) to investigate the effect of changing the nucleofuge from 2,4-dinitrophenoxide to 3,4-dinitrophenoxide on reactivity and mechanism. The kinetic results show that aminolyses of 5a and 5b proceed through the same mechanism, i.e., a zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate ($T^{\pm}$) with a change in the rate-determining step (RDS). Substrate 5a is more reactive than 5b when breakdown of $T^{\pm}$ is the RDS but less reactive when formation of $T^{\pm}$ is the RDS. Dissection of kN values into the microscopic rate constants (e.g., $k_1$ and $k_2/k_{-1 }$ ratio) has revealed that 5a results in larger $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratios but smaller k1 values than 5b for all the amines studied. Since 2,4-dinitrophenoxide is less basic and a better nucleofuge than 3,4-dinitrophenoxide, the larger $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratios determined for the reactions of 5a than for those of 5b are as expected. The steric hindrance exerted by the ortho-nitro group on 5a contributes to the smaller k1 values found for the reactions of 5a than for those of 5b.
