Effects of Feeding Wastes from Brassica Species on Growth of Goats and Pesticide/Insecticide Residues in Goat Meat

  • The effects of feeding Brassica vegetable market wastes on intake, body weight changes and pesticide/insecticide residues in products of goats were evaluated in two experiments. In the first experiment (Exp. 1) 16 goats (Bach Thao, 9 to 10 kg, 3 months old, 9 males and 7 females) were fed four diets with leaves either from cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata), cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) or Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris subsp. pekinensis) with 30% of Para grass. The control group was fed 100% Para grass. All diets contained soybean waste as a supplement and the experiment lasted for 136 days. In the second experiment (Exp. 2) 24 goats (Bach Thao, 12 to 14 kg, all males) were assigned to three treatments in a completely randomised block design based on initial body weight. The goats were fed cabbage waste supplemented with 200 g or 100 g DM (dry matter) of concentrate. Para grass with 100 g DM concentrate supplementation was used as a control group. The experiment lasted for 90 days and at the end of the study, 12 goats were slaughtered for pesticide/insecticide analysis. Due to low DM content (5.3 and 3.7%, respectively) feed intakes of cabbage and Chinese cabbage groups were lower than those of other groups in the experiment. The highest feed intake and body weight gain was obtained when the goats were fed cauliflower (529 g DM/day and 87.5 g/day, respectively). In Exp. 2 total intake of cabbage and concentrate was similar (484 g and 453 g DM/day) whether the goats were fed 100 or 200 g concentrate/day but lower than that of Para grass and concentrate probably due to the low DM content of the cabbage (5.9%). Crude protein intake (79 g to 86 g/day) and body weight gain (70 g to 88 g/day) was not significantly different between treatments. Adding concentrate consequently resulted in higher DM intake than in Exp. 1 but did not result in any higher growth rate. Three of the pesticide/insecticide residues tested were found in cabbage, Alpha-Cypermethrin, Bassa-Fenobucarb and Dimethoate with levels of 0.175, 0.074 and 0.028 mg/kg fresh cabbage respectively. Weight of livers from goats fed cabbage was about 90 g higher than from goats fed Para grass but no pesticide/herbicide residues were found in meat or liver.

Economic Injury Level of Myzus persicae (Homoptera: Aphididae) at Chinese Cabbage (배추의 생육초기에 복숭아혹진딧물의 경제적 피해수준 설정)

  • This study was conducted to estimate the economic injury level (EIL) and economic threshold (ET) of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, on Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var). The changes of biomass of Chinese cabbage and M. persicae density were investigated after introduction of M. persicae at different density (0, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 20 per plant; inoculated at 10d after planting). The densities of M. persicae largely increased from the above initial densities to 0, 92.3, 177.4, 406.9, 440.4, and 471.3 aphids per plant at 18d after the initial inoculation, respectively. The biomass of Chinese cabbage significantly decreased with increasing the initial inoculated density of M. persicae: 602.0, 264.2, 262.0, 109.3, 151.0, and 67.3 g in above plots with different initial densities, respectively. The relationship between cumulative aphid days (CAD) and yield loss (%) of Chinese cabbage was well described by a nonlinear logistic equation. Using the estimated equation, EIL of M. persicae on Chinese cabbage was estimated 25 CAD per plant based on the yield loss 13%, which take into account of an empirical gain threshold 5% and marketable rate 92% of spring Chinese cabbage. Also, ET was calculated at 80% of EIL: 20 aphids per plant. Until a more elaborate EIL-model is developed, the present result may be useful for M. persicae management at early growth stage of Chinese cabbage.

Analysis of Foodborne Pathogens in Brassica campestris var. narinosa microgreen from Harvesting and Processing Steps (어린잎채소의 생산 및 가공 공정 중 식중독 미생물 분석)

  • This study was performed to assess the microbiological quality of Brassica campestris var. narinosa microgreen from harvesting and processing steps. The samples were analyzed for total viable cell counts (TVC), coliforms, Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Bacillus cereus, and Staphylococcus aureus. The total viable counts of microgreen (whole leaves) and environment samples from harvesting steps were higher than 6.8 log CFU/g and the contamination level of coliforms in the samples were 3.2 log CFU/g and 3.5 log CFU/g of microgreen and soil, respectively. In case of microgreen samples collected from processing steps, the contamination level of TVC and coliforms were higher in raw materials than samples obtained from later stages of processing, i.e. washing, drain, and final products. The contamination levels of B. cereus in raw materials and environments decreased approximately 1.4 log CFU/g in final products. S. aureus was detected in soil samples but Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and pathogenic E. coli was not detected. In order to identify the sources of contamination for microgreen, the genetic similarity of B. cereus isolates obtained from harvesting and processing steps were compared using the repetitive-sequence-based polymerase chain reaction method. B. cereus isolates obtained from harvesting environments and microgreen were clustered with a similarity greater than 95%. In case of B. cereus isolates obtained from microgreen and environmental samples at processing steps showed low genetic similarity.

Growth and Postharvest Freshness of $Tah$ $Tasai$ Chinese Cabbage ($Brassica$ $campestris$ var. $narinosa$) Baby Leaf Vegetable as Affected by Brushing Treatment during Cultivation (재배 시 brushing 처리에 따른 어린잎 채소 다채의 생육과 수확 후 선도 차이)

  • An experiment was conducted to find out the effect of brushing treatment during cultivation on the postharvest quality of the baby leaf vegetable, specifically tah tasai Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var. narinosa). The effect of mechanical brushing during cultivation on the postharvest quality was determined in terms of the quality changes in weight loss, gas partial pressure, leaf color, and appearance during storage using a 30-${\mu}m$-thick polypropylene film at $16^{\circ}C$. The brushing treatment included brushing with A4 paper back and forth 50 times a day. The study revealed that the growths on the brushing-treated plant group were less than those on the control group. The structure of the leaf tissue of the brushing-treated plant also tended to be less compact than that of the non-treated plant. The brushing treatment resulted in less growth and denser plant tissues as well as in differences in the gas $O_2$ consumption and $CO_2$ accumulation after packaging. For the gas partial pressure, the $O_2$ consumption and $CO_2$ accumulation of the brushing-treated plant tended to be less than those of the non-treated plant. There were no differences, however, between the brushing-treated plant and control groups in the SPAD value and appearance. The study results also suggested that after packaging, the effects of the brushing treatment during cultivation on the quality of the tah tasai Chinese cabbage baby leaf vegetable was not significant. As such, it is recommended that effective post-harvest methods of improving the product quality of the baby leaf vegetable be further investigated.

Effect of Napa Cabbage (Brassica campestris var. Pekinensis) Cropping Systems on Soil Physiochemical Properties, Yield and Quality in Alpine Area of South Korea (한국 고랭지 배추 작부체계에 따른 토양, 배추 생산성 및 성분 특성 비교)

  • Napa cabbage (Brassica campestris var. Pekinensis) is the main material of Kimchi so that important crop in South Korea. There are two typical napa cabbage cropping systems in the alpine area. One is cultivating napa cabbage annually while another is cultivating napa cabbage and potato biennially. In this research, we evaluated soil physiochemical properties, yield, and mineral contents of napa cabbage depending on two cropping systems. As a result, organic matter, available P2O5, exchangeable K+ was decreased after six-years of cultivation on both cropping systems. However, soil pH was only decreased in a continuous napa cabbage cropping system. Soil porosity is also decreased in both cropping systems on topsoil while is increased in rotation with potato on subsoil. The rotation system showed a significantly higher yield with a higher value of leaf and napa cabbage size than the continuous cropping system. Total nitrogen, Ca2+, and Ma2+ were increased and total carbon and phosphate decreased in both cropping systems after six-years. Especially, total nitrogen and Mg2+ were significantly higher in the continuous system while Ca2+ was higher in the rotation system. In conclusion, the cropping system influences soil physiochemical properties and plant production in an agricultural field.

Antioxidant activities of commonly used Brassica spp. sprout vegetables in Korea (국내 다소비 십자화과 새싹채소 추출물의 항산화 활성)

  • Brassica spp. vegetables have been known to have biological activities such as anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities. In this study, we investigated the in vitro physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of commonly used Brassica spp. sprout vegetables such as kohlabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongyloides), red radish (Raphanussativus L. var. sativus), broccoli (B. oleracea var. italica), cabbage (B. rapavar. glabra Regel), rape (B. napus), radish (R. sativus), and tatsoi (B. campestris var. narinosa) sprouts. Our results showed that the vegetables with the highest total phenolics contents were the radish sprout ($24.40{\pm}1.24mg\;TAE/g$) and kohlabi sprout extracts ($23.97{\pm}0.46mg\;TAE/g$). Furthermore, the vegetable with the highest total flavonoid content was the radish sprout extract ($15.30{\pm}1.35mg\;CE/g$). However, the kohlabi sprout extract showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging value ($IC_{50}=1.95mg/mL$) and ORAC value (79.03 mM TE/g). In addition,the six kinds of Brassica spp. sprout vegetable extracts, except tatsoi, significantly inhibited the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and showed that intracellular oxidative stress is closely related tothe accumulation of differentiated adipocytes and fat during the adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. These results suggest that Brassica spp. sprout vegetables, especially kohlabi and radish sprout extracts, can be used to develop natural antioxidants.

Studios on the Host Range of Cucumber Mosaic Virus in Korea (한국에서의 오이모자익 바이러스의 기주범위에 관한 연구)

  • Various plant species, as many as 145 species in 43 families, were tested for susceptibility to the ordinary strain of the cucumber nosaic virus for two years from 1973 to 1974. Inoculations were made by mechanical method using carborundum. Plants in 71 species belonging to 27 families were infected. Of these species, systemic mosaic developed on the new leaves of plants in 57 species belonging to 24 families. Twenty-four species of plants, previously not reported as hosts of the CMV, were found to be infected in this experiment. These are Stellaria aquatica, Achyrauthes japonica, Agerratum houstonianum, Centipeda minima, Gillardia pulchella, Henisteptalyrate, Ixeris dentata, Saussurea uchiyamana, Brassica campestris, Lepidiumapetalum, Lobelia chinensis, Chenopodium bryoniaefolium, Carex neofilipes, Acalypha austalis, Amphicarpaea edgeworthii, Lotus corniculatus var japonicus, Phaseolus angularis, Sedum aizoom var heterodontum, Mosla punctulata, Perilla frutescens var japonica, Teucrium japonicum,. Linum usitatissimum, Mazus japonicus, Verbena hybrida. Twenty-three species reported to be susceptible by previous workers, but negative results were obtained in our experiment with Allium cepa, Celosia cristat, Daucus carota var. sativa, Artemisia asiatica, Callistenphus chinensis, Erigeron canadensis, Helianthusannuus, Tagetes eracta, Impatiens balsamina, Raphanus sativus, Ipomea batatas, Glycine max, Phaseolus vulgaris, Lilium longifolium, Papaver gomniferum, Sorghum vulgare, Triticum aestivum, Zea mays, Rumex coreanus, Potulaca grandiflora.

  • Flora of the Dokdo Islet, where located south-east from Ulnung Island, off the east coast of the Korean peninsula, recorded as 59 taxa; 29 families, 50 genus, 48 species, 1 sub-species, 9 varieties and 1 form. Dong-do (East islet) of Dokdo Islet, naturalized plants such as Brassica campestris subsp. napus var. nipp-oleitera and Rumex crispus are widely ranged over the islet. The naturalizedplants affects the native species and their habitats of Artemisia japonica var. macrocephala, Echinochloa crus-galli, Sedum oryzifolium, Arabis stelleri var. japonica and Sedum kamtschaticum var takesimense in the islet. The trail in Seo-do (West islet) is heavily threatened by over-all weathering processes on the rock. The native woody species in the islet are Euonymous japonicus and Lonicera insularis, and the species such as Pinus thunbergii and Hibiscus syriacus are planted in the recent past under the IRP (Islet Restoration Program) by NGO. The Specific Plants, which is designated and categorized by the Ministry of Environment, Korea, such as Lilium lancifolium, Lysimachia mauritiana and Reynoutria sachalinensis are ranged. The ecosystem of Dokdo islet is seriously threatened by invadedplant species and building works for garrison and relevant facilities. The over-all long- and short-term strategies, based on interdisciplinary and integrated approaches for habitat restoration is needed.

Reaction of Cauliflower Genotypes to Black Rot of Crucifers

  • This study aimed to evaluate six cauliflower genotypes regarding their resistance to black rot and their production performance. To do so, it was conducted two field experiments in Ipameri, $Goi\acute{a}s$, Brazil, in 2012 and 2013. It was used a randomized block design, with four replications (total of 24 plots). Each plot consisted of three planting lines 2.5 m long (six plants/line), spaced 1.0 m apart, for a total area of $7.5m^2$. Evaluations of black rot severity were performed at 45 days after transplanting, this is, 75 days after sowing (DAS), and yield evaluations at 90 to 105 DAS. The Verona 184 genotype was the most resistant to black rot, showing 1.87 and 2.25% of leaf area covered by black rot symptom (LACBRS) in 2012 and 2013. However, it was not among the most productive materials. The yield of the genotypes varied between 15.14 and 25.83 t/ha in both years, Lisvera F1 (21.78 and 24.60 t/ha) and Cindy (19.95 and 23.56 t/ha) being the most productive. However, Lisvera F1 showed 6.37 and 9.37% of LACBRS and Cindy showed 14.25 and 14.87% of LACBRS in 2012 and 2013, being both considered as tolerant to black rot.

New Host Plants of Turnip Mosaic Potyvirus in Korea (순무 모자이크 바이러스(TuMV)의 새로운 기주식물 탐색)

  • Turnip mosaic potyviruses (TuMV) were isolated from Rorippa indica and Armoracia lapathifolia showing mosaic symptoms in field. Identification of the TuMVs were carried out by host reactions of indicator plants, electron micrograph, serological properties and reverse transcription-poly-merase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Both viruses systemically infected Chenopodium quinoa, Nicotiana clevelandii, Brassica rapa, B. campestris subsp. pekinensis, B. juncea and Raphanus sativus, and developed local infection on inoculated leaves of C. quinoa, C. amaranticola, C. album, N. tabacum cv. Xanthi nc and Gomphrena grobosa. However, the viruses did not infect on N. glutinosa, Cucumis sativus and Vigna unguiculata. The filamentous particles, about 720 nm in length, and inclusion bodies were observed from the infected leaf tissues by dipping on electron microscopy. Crude sap of leaf infected with the viruses was reacted positively with an antiserum of TuMV in agar gel double diffusion. For detection of the viruses, RT-PCR was carried out with TuMV--specfic oligonucleotide primer. The RT-PCR products, a 1,092 bp DNA fragment, were obtained from naturally infected leaves of R. indica and A. lapathifolia. In inoculation test to seven cruciferous weeds with TuMV, infection occurred in Arabis glabra, Barbarea orthoceras, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Draba nomorosa var. hebecarpa, Rorippa cantoniensis and Thlaspi arvense.
