  • In order to study the fatigue crack and retardation mechanism in variable loading, the effects of crack tip branching in crack growth retardation were examined. The characteristics of crack tip branching behavior were considered with respect to microstructure and crack tip branching angle was examined. Crack tip branching was observed along the grain boundary of finite and pearlite structure. It was found that the branching angle ranges from 25 to 53 degrees. Using the finite element method, the variable of crack driving farce to branching angle was examined. The effective crack driving farce (K$\_$eff/) decreased as the branching angle increased. The rate of decrease was 33% for kinked type and 29% for forked one. It was confirmed that the effect of crack tip branching is a very important factor in crack growth retardation. Therefore, crack branching effect should be considered in building the hypothetical model to predict crack growth retardation.

  • This study was conducted to improve group production structure of green pepper in greenhouse. Plant was trained 45$^{\circ}$ branching, erection after 45$^{\circ}$ branching and erection. Light absorption index was calculated to investigate relation of light intensity and leaf area in different plant type according to plant height. Group production structure was analyzed with relative light intensity and dry weight of plant. In total growing seasons, group production structures were good in order of erect type after 45$^{\circ}$ branching > erect type > 45$^{\circ}$ branching type in view of light absorption, leaf and stem distribution. Plant height of erect type was taller than any other case, and average node length of 45$^{\circ}$ branching type was shorter than any other case. But stem diameter, leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight of erect type after 45$^{\circ}$ branching were superior to any other case. Yield is order of erect type after 45$^{\circ}$ branching > 45$^{\circ}$ branching type > erect type.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the prosodic aspects of structural ambiguous sentences in Korean produced by Japanese Korean learners and the influence of their first language prosody. Previous studies reported that structural ambiguous sentences in Korean are different especially in prosodic phrasing. So we examined whether Japanese Korean leaners can also distinguish, in production, between two types of structural ambiguous sentences on the basis of prosodic features. For this purpose 4 Korean native speakers and 8 Japanese Korean learners participated in the production test. Analysis materials are 6 sentences where a relative clause modify either NP1 or NP1+NP2. The results show that Korean native speakers produced ambiguous sentences by different prosodic structure depending on their semantic and syntactic structure (left branching or right branching sentence). Japanese speakers also show distinct prosodic structure for two types of ambiguous sentences in most cases, but they have more errors in producing left branching sentences than right branching sentences. In addition to that, interference of Japanese pitch accent in the production of Korean ambiguous sentences was observed.

  • In order to obtain crosslinked poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) foams with a closed-cell structure, a commercial-grade PBS was first modified in the melt using two different branching agents to increase the melt viscosity. The rheological properties of the branched and crosslinked PBS were examined by varying the amount of the branching agents. The complex viscosity of the crosslinked PBS increased with increasing amount of the branching agent. However, it decreased with increasing frequency. When 2 phr of the branching agent was added to PBS, the storage modulus (G') was higher than the loss modulus (G") throughout the entire frequency range, showing that the addition of a branching agent increases the melt viscosity and elasticity of PBS effectively. Closed-cell PBS foams were prepared by mixing the chemical blowing agent with the crosslinked PBS. The effect of the foaming conditions such as temperature and time, and the amount of the crosslinking agent on the structure of the expanded PBS foams were also investigated.

  • A tree-indexed autoregressive(AR) process is a time series defined on a tree which is generated by a branching process and/or a deterministic splitting mechanism. This short article is concerned with conditional heteroscedastic structure of the tree-indexed AR models. It has been usual in the literature to analyze conditional mean structure (rather than conditional variance) of tree-indexed AR models. This article pursues to identify quadratic conditional heteroscedasticity inherent in various tree-indexed AR models in a unified way, and thus providing some perspectives to the future works in this area. The identical conditional variance of sisters sharing the same mother will be referred to as the branching heteroscedasticity(BH, for short). A quasilikelihood but preliminary estimation of the quadratic BH is discussed and relevant limit distributions are derived.

  • Since the bifurcating autoregressive (BAR) model was developed by Cowan and Staudte (1986) to analyze cell lineage data, a lot of research has been directed to BAR and its generalizations. Based mainly on the author's works, this paper is concerned with a contemporary review on the BAR in terms of an overview and perspectives. Specifically, bifurcating structure is extended to multi-cast tree and to branching tree structure. The AR(1) time series model of Cowan and Staudte (1986) is generalized to tree structured random processes. Branching correlations between individuals sharing the same parent are introduced and discussed. Various methods for estimating parameters and related asymptotics are also reviewed. Consequently, the paper aims to give a contemporary overview on the BAR model, providing some perspectives to the future works in this area.

  • Single overload tests performed to examine the crack retardation behavior for the specimen thickness and overload ratios. Delayed crack length was tend to increase in small thickness and big overload ratio but was difference between delayed crack length and plastic zone size that expected in specimen thickness. So retardation behavior that estimated in plastic zone size, was not sufficient. Crack tip branching and striation distribution, secondary mechanisms that effected in retardation behavior, was examined by experiment and finite element analysis. Crack tip branching was affected by micro structure, and appeared the more complicatedly according to increasing damage by overload and decreasing crack driving force in base line stress level. And crack tip branching the branching angle decreased crack driving force in the crack tip. And a characteristic of the fractography on retardation zone was that striation distribution did not appear due to decreased crack driving force.

  • This paper investigates ordering alternation phenomena in Korean using the dative construction data from Sejong Corpus of Modern Korean (Kim, 2000). The paper first shows that syntactic weight and information structure are distinct and independent factors that influence word order in Korean. Moreover, it reveals that heaviness and givenness compete each other and exert diverging effects on word order, which contrasts the converging effects of these factors shown in word orders of right-branching languages like English. The typological variation of syntactic weight effect poses interesting theoretical and empirical questions, which are discussed in relation to processing efficiency in ordering.

  • There are two different approaches in studying mapping between syntactic structure and prosody, the 'phonetic approach' and the 'phonological approach'. An experiment to examine which approach is more valid was conducted. In the experiment, syntactically ambiguous Seoul Korean sentences in each of which a noun immediately after an adjective starts with either an H-segment (a segment which triggers the AP-initial H tone) or an L-segment (a segment other than H-segments) were recorded. by 3 Seoul Korean speakers. The F0 values in the syllables containing the consonants in question were then measured. The results show that interaction between the segment type and the branching structure is statistically significant. which suggests that it is difficult to use the phonetic .approach to generalize the relationship between syntax and prosody. Thus, it is concluded that the phonological approach is more valid.
