We synthesized potassium hexatitanate, ($K_2Ti_6O_{13}$, PT6), with a non-fibrous shape, by acid leaching and subsequent thermal treatment of potassium tetratitanate ($K_2Ti_4O_9$, PT4), with layered crystal structure. By controlling nucleation and growth of PT4 crystals, we obtained splinter-type crystals of PT6 with increased width and reduced thickness. The optimal holding temperature for the layered PT4 was found to be ${\sim}920^{\circ}C$. The length and width of the PT4 crystals were increased when the nucleation and growth time were increased. After a proton exchange reaction using aqueous 0.3 M HCl solution, and subsequent heat treatment at $850^{\circ}C$, the PT4 crystal transformed into splinter-type PT6 crystals. The frictional characteristics of the friction materials show that as the particle size of PT6 increases, the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear amounts of both the friction materials and counter disc increase.
This paper studies the effect of pad at initial stage and wear during braking on the dynamic contact pressure distribution. Wear is influenced by variable factor (contact pressure, sliding speed, radius, temperature) during dynamic braking and variation in contact pressure distribution. Many researchers have conducted complex eigenvalue analysis considering wear characteristic with Lim and Ashby wear map. The conventional analysis method is assumed the pad has smooth and flat surfaces. The purpose of this paper is to validate that wear rate induced by braking is considered for the precise squeal prediction. After obtaining pad wear from experiment, it is incorporated with FE model of brake system. Finally, the comparisons in fugitive nature of squeal will be carried out between the complex eigenvalue analysis and noise dynamometer experiment.
Frictional heating in brakes causes thermoelastic distortion of the contacting bodies and hence affects the contact pressure distribution. The resulting thermo-mechanical coupling can cause thermoelastic instability (TEI) if the sliding speed is sufficiently high, leading to non-uniform heating called hot spots and low frequency vibration known as hot judder. The vibration of brakes to the known phenomenon of frictionally-excited thermoelastic instability is estimated studying the interface temperature and pressure evolution with time. A simple model has been considered where a layer with half-thickness ${\alpha}$ slides with speed V between two half-planes which are rigid and non-conducting. The advantage of this properly simple model permits us to deduce analytically the critical conditions for the onset of instability, which is the relation between the critical speed and the growth rate of the interface temperature and pressure. Symmetrical component of pressure and temperature distribution at the layer interfaces can be more unstable than antisymmetrical component. As the thickness ${\alpha}$ reduces, the system becomes more apt to thermoelastic instability. Moreover, the evolution of the system beyond the critical conditions has shown that even if low frequency perturbations are associated with low critical speed, it might be less critical than high frequency perturbations if the working sliding speed is much larger than the actual critical speed of the system.
