Severe intraventricular hemorrhaging (IVH) in premature infants and subsequent posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) causes significant mortality and life-long neurological complications, including seizures, cerebral palsy, and developmental retardation. However, there are currently no effective therapies for neonatal IVH. The pathogenesis of PHH has been mainly explained by inflammation within the subarachnoid spaces due to the hemolysis of extravasated blood after IVH. Obliterative arachnoiditis, induced by inflammatory responses, impairs cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) resorption and subsequently leads to the development of PHH with ensuing brain damage. Increasing evidence has demonstrated potent immunomodulating abilities of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in various brain injury models. Recent reports of MSC transplantation in an IVH model of newborn rats demonstrated that intraventricular transplantation of MSCs downregulated the inflammatory cytokines in CSF and attenuated progressive PHH. In addition, MSC transplantation mitigated the brain damages that ensue after IVH and PHH, including reactive gliosis, cell death, delayed myelination, and impaired behavioral functions. These findings suggest that MSCs are promising therapeutic agents for neuroprotection in preterm infants with severe IVH.

This paper describes a naturally occurring case of meningoencephalitis associated with Listeria monocytogenes in a 4 month-old Korean native goat. The goat was raised in a herd consisting of seventy goats, and fed on straw and leftover vegetables including onions, cauliflower, and bean sprouts. The clinical symptoms of the goat were depression, in appetence, anorexia, circling, and recumbency before death. No conspicuous gross lesions were found except consolidation of the lung. Histopathologically, severe multifocal microabscesses and perivascular cuffings were observed in the brain stem and mid brain. In addition, mild nonsuppurative meningitis in the cerebrum were seen in this case. The organism isolated from the brain stem was confirmed as L. monocytogenes using the biochemical tests and PCR assay. Based on clinical signs, histopathology, and bacterial isolation; we confirmed that this case was a typical encephalitic listeriosis.
Many studies have been conducted to search for the anatomical abnormalities in the brain which ore etiologically related with schizophrenia. Generally schizophrenia in known to be related with decreased brain tissue, hypofrontality and abnormalities in the temporal lobe including the hippocamypus, the agmygdala and the entorhinal cortex. Other areas related with the disorder ore basal ganglia, thalamus, brain stem, pons and nucleus accumbens. Abnormality in brain asymmetry is one of the new areas of interest which needs further study. The results so for ore inconsistent and it is unlikely that the abnormality in one structure is the only cause of the disorder. Rather, schizophrenia develops from the impairment of the parallel processing of integrated and reciprocal information which is distributed to the multiple structures. Histopathologic studies in the postmortem brain suggest that schizophrenia is related with neurodevelopmental abnormality rather than neurodegenerative abnormality.
The heterotrimeric G protein subunits (G ) are region-specifically expressed in brain such as hypothalamus and pituitary gland in abundant, suggesting that is may be associated with “stress-axis”. This study was designed to examine the effect of stress on the region-specific expression of various G subunits in rat brain. The localization of mRNAs encoding seven of G and striking region-specific patterns of expression were observed in 12 different regions of both non-stressed and stressed rat brain; (1) frontal cortex area, (2) cerebral cortex area, (3) striatum, (4) hippocampus area, (5) thalamus, (6) brain stem, (7) cerebellum area, (8) hypothalamus, (9) septum, (10) amygdala, (11) preoptic area, and (12) pituitary gland. Significant knowledge about the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been gained in the last century; however, the understanding of its causes of onset remains limited. Late-onset AD is observed in about 95% of patients, and APOE4-encoding apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4) is strongly associated with these cases. As an apolipoprotein, the function of ApoE in brain cholesterol transport has been extensively studied and widely appreciated. Development of new technologies such as human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing tools have enabled us to develop human brain model systems in vitro and readily manipulate genomic information. In the context of these advances, recent studies provide strong evidence that abnormal cholesterol metabolism by ApoE4 could be linked to AD-associated pathology. In this review, we discuss novel discoveries in brain cholesterol dysregulation by ApoE4. We further elaborate cell type-specific roles in cholesterol regulation of four major brain cell types, neurons, astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes, and how its dysregulation can be linked to AD pathology.
To anlyze the diffuse axonal injury of the human brain, 3-D finite element models of the adult, two and three years child were developed. Triangular type acceleration which had its maximum value 200g was applied to investigate the effects of acceleration direction and duration time. The pattern of high shear stress generated at the brain stem, pones and midbrain was similar to the pattern of DAI seen in the clinical observation, especially high maximum shear stress was detected in the brain stem of the six year old child model under flexional acceleration. As the duration of acceleration increased generated pressure and maximum shear stress also increased. For the children's model relatively small pressure was generated regardless of the acceleration direction and continued much longer compared with adult's model. From this analysis maximum shear stress was revealed more proper indicator to predict DAI compared to HIC in case of angular acceleration loading.
Embryonic stem cells have several characteristics suitable for cell replacement therapy. To investigate a possibility of using human embryonic stem cell (hESC) as a carrier of therapeutic gene(s), hESC (MB03) was co-transfected with cDNAS coding for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and GTP cyclohydrolase Ⅰ (GTPCH Ⅰ) and bulk-selected using neomycin and hygromycin-B. Successful transfection was confirmed by western immunoblotting and RT-PCR. The genetically modified hESC (bk-THGC) relieved apomorphine-induced asymmetric motor behavior by approximately 54% when grafted into striatum of 6-OHDA-denervated rat brain. The number of rotation, however, increased up to 176+18% in 6 weeks when sham-grafted compared with number of rotation before graft. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that the grafted hESC survived and expressed TH for at least 6 weeks while the experiment was continued.
Prominin-1 (PROM1), also called CD133, is a penta-span transmembrane protein that is localized in membrane protrusions, such as microvilli and filopodia. It is known to be expressed in cancer stem cells and various progenitor cells of bone marrow, liver, kidney, and intestine. Accumulating evidence has revealed that PROM1 has multiple functions in various organs, such as eye, tooth, peripheral nerve, and liver, associating with various molecular protein partners. PROM1 regulates PKA-induced gluconeogenesis, TGFβ-induced fibrosis, and IL-6-induced regeneration in the liver, associating with Radixin, SMAD7, and GP130, respectively. In addition, PROM1 is necessary to maintain cancer stem cell properties by activating PI3K and β-Catenin. PROM1-deficienct mice also show distinct phenotypes in eyes, brain, peripheral nerves, and tooth. Here, we discuss recent findings of PROM1-mediated signal transduction.

This study was aimed to charily the change of NADPH-diaphorase(NADPH-d) and neuropeptide Y(NPY) associated with aging of the rots. To verily the effect of aging of NPY and NADPH-d-positive neurons in the brain stem, the neurons were stained by the immunohistochemical and histochemical method. In the aged group, the number of NADPH-d-positive neurons was significantly decreased in substantia nigra lateralis, supragenual nucleus, raphe magnus nucleus and raphe obscurus nucleus as compared with control group. The number of NADPH-d-positive neurons was not significantly decreased in superior colliculus, interpeduncular nucleus, central gray. dorsal raphe nucleus, retrorubral nucleus, pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus, laterodorsal tegmental nucleus, pontine reticular nucleus, prepositus hypoglossal nucleus and nucleus solitarius of the aged rats. The NADPH-d and NPY-positive neurons were found in the interpeduncular nucleus, central gray, substantia nigra lateralis, laterodorsal tegmental nucleus, nucleus solitarius, raphe magnus nucleus, raphe obscurus nucleus of the control and aged groups. The coexistence of NADPH-d and NPY in the some cell was not found in the brain stem of both groups.
Objective : We treated 10 pediatric diffuse intrinsic brain stem glioma[BSG] patients with Novalis system [linac based radiotherapy unit, Germany] and examined the efficacy of the Fractionated Stereotactic Radiotherapy[FSRT]. Methods : A retrospective review was conducted on 10 pediatric diffuse intrinsic BSG patients who were treated with FSRT between May, 2001 and August, 2004. The mean age of the patient group was 7.7 years old. Male to female ratio was 4 to 1. The mean dose of FSRT was 38.7Gy, mean fractionated dose was 2.6Gy, mean fractionation size was 16.6, and target volume was $42.78cm^3$. The mean follow up period was 14 months. Results : Four weeks after completion of FSRT, improvements on neurological status and Karnofsky performance scale[KPS] score were recorded in 9/10 (90%] patients and magnetic resonance imaging[MRI] showed decrease in target tumor volume in 8 pediatric patients. The median survival period was 13.5 months after FSRT and treatment toxicity was mild. Conclusion : It is difficult for surgeons to choose surgical treatment for diffuse intrinsic BSG due to its dangerous anatomical structures. FSRT made it possible to control the tumor volume to improve neurological symptoms with minimal complications. We expect that FSRT is a feasible treatment modality for pediatric diffuse intrinsic BSG with tolerable toxicities.
