Since 2007, Insurance Institute of Highway Safety(IIHS) has conducted the new bumper test using bumper barrier to estimate the repair cost of impacted vehicle. In this study, for the front body FE model of a medium size passenger car analyzes were carried out to optimize the shape of backbeam center reinforcement bracket. First, overlap effect was examined with changing the overlap magnitude and spot welds were added along the backbeam center line for reducing the section shear deformation. Next, for an overlap model design parameter study was performed for the bracket. Thickness effect was examined and an inner reinforcement was added to the bracket. Also, the lower part of bracket was deleted and additionally the bracket length was extended. The results were discussed in terms of backbeam backward deflection, barrier backstop intrusion and weight. Compared with the current design, the final model showed 44.1% bracket weight reduction with 30.0% decrease of backbeam deflection.

The masonry structure is constructed by cement mortar binding material of brick objects and uses reinforced hardware (connected hardware or wall tie) together when building. However, over time, the corrosion of reinforced steel and the deterioration of joint mortar as well as bricks cause the risk of collapse. In particular, when the externally decorated brick wall is installed on the concrete girder for each floor, the angle bracket is not constructed or corroded, the full-layer weight load is applied to the wall of 0.5B, which is an example of full-scale or collapse. The purpose of this study is to provide numerical information on the reinforcement design by experimentally studying the structural performance of concrete reinforcement brackets that reinforce the vertical load of the exterior wall.

In this study, finite element analysis was performed to evaluate a method of increasing the fatigue life of the pipe connection structure commonly used in the topside structure of offshore platforms. MSC Patran/Nastran, a commercial analysis program, was used, and the critical structural model was selected from the global analysis. To realize the stress concentration phenomenon according to the load, modeling using 8-node solid elements was implemented. The main loads were considered to be two lateral loads and a tensile load on a diagonal pipe. To check the hotspot stress at the main location, a 0.01 mm dummy shell element was applied. After calculating the main stress at the 0.5-t and 1.5-t locations, the stress generated in the weld was estimated through extrapolation. In some sections, this stress was observed to be below the fatigue life that should be satisfied, and reinforcement was required. For reinforcement, a bracket was added to reduce the stress concentration factor where the fatigue life was insufficient without changing the thickness or diameter of the previously designed pipe. Regarding the tensile load, the stress in the bracket toe increased by 23 %, whereas the stress inside and outside of the pipe, which was a problem, decreased by approximately 8 %. Regarding the flexural load, the stress at the bracket toe increased by 3 %, whereas the stress inside and outside of the pipe, which was also a problem, decreased by approximately 48 %. Owing to the new bracket reinforcement, the stress in the bracket toe increased, but the S-N curve itself was better than that of the pipe joint, so it was not a significant problem. The improvement method of fatigue life is expected to be useful; it can efficiently increase the fatigue life while minimizing changes to the initial design.
Corrosion of reinforcement is the greatest threat to the safety of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Most of the olden structures are gravity load designed (GLD) and are seismically deficient. In present study, investigations are carried out on corrosion damaged GLD beam-column sub-assemblages under reverse cyclic loading, in order to evaluate their seismic performance. Five GLD beam-column sub-assemblage specimens comprising of i) One uncorroded ii) Two corroded iii) One uncorroded strengthened with steel bracket and haunch iv) One corroded strengthened with steel bracket and haunch, are tested under reverse cyclic loading. The performances of these specimens are assessed in terms of hysteretic behaviour, energy dissipation and strength degradation. It is noted that the nature of corrosion i.e. uniform or pitting corrosion and its location have significant influence on the behaviour of corrosion damaged GLD beam-column sub-assemblages. The corroded specimens with localised corrosion pits showed in-cyclic strength degradation. The study also reveals that external strengthening which provides an alternate force path but depends on the strength of the existing reinforcement bars, is able to mitigate the seismic risk of corroded GLD beam-column sub-assemblages to the level of control uncorroded GLD specimen.

This study is to develop the end anchorage of external steel reinforcement of RC slab bridges. External prestress method using the existing steel is that When the anchorage is installed in slab end, a plenty of anchor bolts were required because the only tangential stress of anchor bolt received a tendon force. Then, for this reason, the wide end anchorage was required and the shape was complicate. But this reinforcement method using method that inserts anchor key at concrete surface cut a groove gets big internal force comparing to the anchorage using existing anchor bolt. Furthermore, the number of anchor bolt for installing apparently will be reduced, and the operation will be convenient because a small anchorage of a simple shape will be received a great tendon force.
The connection performance between cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls and support has the greatest effect on the horizontal shear strength. In this study, the horizontal shear performance of CLT walls with reinforced connection systems was evaluated. The reinforcements of metal bracket connections in the CLT connection system was made by attaching glass fiber-based reinforcement to the connection zone of a CLT core lamina. Three types of glass fiber-based reinforcement were used: glass fiber sheet (GS), glass fiber cloth (GT) and fiber cloth plastic (GTS). The horizontal shear strength of the fabricated wall specimens was compared and evaluated through monotonic and cyclic tests. The test results showed that the resistance performance of the reinforced CLT walls to a horizontal load based on a monotonic test did not improve significantly. The residual and yield strengths under the cyclic loading test were 38 and 18% higher, respectively, while the ductility ratio was 38% higher than that of the unreinforced CLT wall. The glass fiber-based reinforcement of the CLT connection showed the possibility of improving the horizontal shear strength performance under a cyclic load, and presented the research direction for the application of real-scale CLT walls.

In order to secure the variability of long-life housing, dry walls are used. The composite gypsum board panel is the most frequently used infill system for the wall, and it is an excellent construction method in terms of constructability and economic feasibility. However, there are also problems such as the destruction of Ondol pipes at the bottom floor and being unable to fix the light weight steel frame (M-bar) when a variable composite gypsum board panel is used. To solve such problems, a wall with a method of fixing only the top part without fixing the bottom floor is developed, but it is difficult to identify the durability of ceiling frame according to the tensile force of stud and the safety according to the Stiffness and impact resistance (soft body) of ceiling frame. Therefore, this study verified the effectiveness of infill system for the wall by conducting experiment on the stiffness and impact resistance of composite gypsum board panel according to the reinforcement of ceiling frame (wooden frame, double saw-toothed bracket, Cross M-bar). As a result, it was possible to secure the safety of wooden frame while the impact resistance and the Stiffness of double saw-toothed bracket and cross M-bar were not secured.

Due to structural characteristics, construction costs and duration of a modular system would be saved by minimizing the schedule on the job site. As such, it is crucial to develop a connection that can guarantee stiffness while allowing for simple assembling. Particularly, the mid- to high-rise construction of the modular system necessitates the securing of the structural stability and seismic performance of multi-unit frames and connections, and thus, the stiffness of unit-assembled structures needs to be re-evaluated and designed. However, evaluating a frame consisting of slender members and reinforcing materials is a complicated process. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the structural characteristics of a modular unit connection based a method for reinforcing connection brackets and hinges while minimizing the loss of the cross section. Toward this end, the study modeled the beam-to-column connection of a modular system with the proposed connection, and produced a specimen which was used to perform a cycling loading test. The study compared the initial stiffness, the attributes of the hysteretic behavior, and the maximum flexural moment, and observed whether the model acquired the seismic performance, compared to the flexural strength of the steel moment frame connection that is required by the Korean Building Code. The test results showed that the proposed connection produced a similar initial stiffness value to that of the theoretical equation, and its maximum strength exceeded the theoretical strength. Furthermore, the model with a larger ceiling bracket showed higher seismic performance, which was further increased by the reinforcement of the plate.

This study examined the defect characteristics of fuel flow proportioner-mounted structures to analyze the causes of structural defects during aircraft operation. System vibrations and single component vibrations that occur during aircraft operations are usually the cause of structural defects. The fuel flow proportioner causes a defect in the support structure due to the vibration caused by the pressure change caused by the sudden increase in the flow rate. Defects in the support structure of the fuel flow proportioner are not correlated directly with the cracking of the maneuver, and flight time according to aircraft operation analysis is related to the use of A/B. The structural reinforcement configuration was confirmed through static and life analysis of the cracks of the bracket mounted under the fuel flow proportioner for improvement of the defect. An analysis of the reinforcement revealed a minimum structural strength of +0.15. Structural life analysis confirmed that the stress acted on the site under 15Ksi. The fatigue life was confirmed to be more than 7,700 Cycles.
