In the present investigation, a numerical model developed for the prediction of the wind flow over complex terrain is validated by comparing with the field experiments. For the solution of the Reynolds - Averaged Clavier- stokes equations which are the governing equations of the microscale atmospheric flow, the model is constructed based on the finite-volume formulation and the SIMPLEC pressure-correction algorithm for the hydrodynamic computation. The boundary- fitted coordinate system is employed for the detailed depiction of topography. The boundary conditions and the modified turbulence constants suitable for an atmospheric boundary- layer are applied together with the k- s turbulence model. The full- scale experiments of Cooper's Ridge, Kettles Hill and Askervein Hill are chosen as the validation cases . Comparisons of the mean flow field between the field measurements and the predicted results show good agreement. In the simulation of the wind flow over Askervein Hill , the numerical model predicts the three dimensional flow separation in the downslope of the hill including the blockage effect due to neighboring hills . Such a flow behavior has not been simulated by the theoretical predictions. Therefore, the present model may offer the most accurate prediction of flow behavior in the leeside of the hill among the existing theoretical and numerical predictions.
In this study, the metallurgical analysis and mechanical property measurement have been performed to investigate the effect of long-term thermal aging on the microstructural evolution in the fusion boundary region between weld metal and low alloy steel in dissimilar metal welds. A representative dissimilar weld mock-up made of Alloy 690-Alloy 152-A533 Gr. B was fabricated and aged at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2,750 hours. The microstructural characterization was conducted mainly near in a weld root region by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. And the mechanical properties were measured with Vickers microhardness test and nanoindentation method. A steep gradient was shown in the chemical composition profile across the interface between A533 Gr. B and Alloy 152. Type-II boundaries were found in weld side of DMW and the hardness was the highest at the narrow zone between Type-II boundary and fusion boundary.
The objective of this paper is to review the magnetic and magneto-transport properties of Co/$Co_2TiSn$ consisting of two metallic magnetic phases that are antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled at the phase boundary. The bulk Co/$Co_2TiSn$ system, which has a $Co_2$TiSn Heusler alloy precipitates in the hexagonal Co matrix, showed an unusual coercivity change with a concurrent change in temperature, and was modeled on the basis of a wall formation caused by exchange coupling at the phase boundary. For measurements of magneto-transport properties, Co/$Co_2TiSn$ thin films that had two-magnet phases were deposited using a magnetron sputtering system with a composite target. The magnetization process in the films is also explained on the basis of the model of wall formation at the phase boundary. Annealed Co/$Co_2TiSn$ films showed a 0.12% GMR effect, indicating the scattering of polarized conduction electrons due to the antiparallel exchange coupling at the phase boundary. The scattering process of conduction electrons at the phase boundary was modeled with relation to the magnetization process.
An unsteady numerical simulation was performed to analyze flow structures behind a local suction/blowing in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer. The local forcing was given to the boundary layer flow by means of sinusoidally oscillating jet. A version of the unsteady $\kappa$-$\xi$-f(sub)u model (Rhee and Sung 2000) was employed. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness was about Re(sub)$\theta$=1700. The forcing frequency was varied in the range 0.011$\leq$f(sup)+$\leq$0.044 with a fixed forcing amplitude A(sub)o=0.4. The predicted results were compared and validated with the experimental data. It was shown that the unsteady locally-forced boundary layer flow is predicted well by the $\kappa$-$\xi$-f(sub)u model. The effect of the pitch angle of local forcing on the reduction of skin friction was also examined.
This paper studies the influence of internal moving fluid and flow-induced structural instability of multi-wall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid. Detailed results are demonstrated for the variation of natural frequencies with flow velocity, and the flow-induced divergence and flutter instability characteristics of multi-wall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam are investigated. Effects of various boundary conditions, Van der Waals forces, and non-classical transverse shear and rotary inertia are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and three different boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton's principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extended Galerkin's method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin's method. This paper also presents the comparison between the characteristics of single-wall and multi-wall carbon nanotubes considering the effect of van der Waals forces. Variations of critical flow velocity for different boundary conditions of two-wall carbon nanotubes are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.
Scattering fields of two dimensional acoustic waves by a circular cylinder are investigated. The present numerical approach for the acoustic scattering problem has difficulties of numerical robustness, long-time stability and suitability of far-field boundary treatments. The time-dependent periodic acoustic source is used to analyze Interference patterns between incident waves and waves reflected by the cylinder. Characteristic boundary algorithms coupled with 4th order Modified-Flux-Approach ENO(essentially non-oscillatory) schemes are employed in generalized coordinates to examine the effect of the wane frequency on the interference patterns. Non-reflecting boundary conditions, which is crustal for accurate computations of aeroacoustic problems, are used not to contaminate scattering fields by reflected waves at the outer boundary. Computed scattering fields show the circumferential acoustic modes generated by interacting between acoustic sources and scattered waves. At a lower frequency, the wave passes almost straight through the cylinder without Interacting with circular cylinder. Simulation results are presented and compared with the analytic solution. Computed RMS-pressure distribution on the cylinder wall is good agreement with exact solution.
Changes in temperature, loads and boundary conditions may have effects on the dynamic properties of large civil structures. Taking the Run Yang Suspension Bridge as an example, modal properties obtained from ambient vibration tests and from the structural health monitoring system of the bridge are used to identify and evaluate the modal parameter variability. Comparisons of these modal parameters reveal that several low-order modes experience a significant change in frequency from the completion of the bridge to its operation. However, the correlation analysis between measured modal parameters and the temperature shows that temperature has a slight influence on the low-order modal frequencies. Therefore, this paper focuses on the effects of the boundary conditions on the dynamic behaviors of the suspension bridge. An analytical model is proposed to perform a sensitivity analysis on modal parameters of the bridge concerning the stiffness of expansion joints located at two ends of bridge girders. It is concluded that the boundary conditions have a significant influence on the low-order modal parameters of the suspension bridge. In addition, the influence of vehicle load on modal parameters is also investigated based on the proposed model.
For the first time, an accurate analytical solution, based on coupled three-dimensional (3D) piezoelasticity equations, is presented for free vibration analysis of the angle-ply elastic and piezoelectric flat laminated panels under arbitrary boundary conditions. The present analytical solution is applicable to composite, sandwich and hybrid panels having arbitrary angle-ply lay-up, material properties, and boundary conditions. The modified Hamiltons principle approach has been applied to derive the weak form of governing equations where stresses, displacements, electric potential, and electric displacement field variables are considered as primary variables. Thereafter, multi-term multi-field extended Kantorovich approach (MMEKM) is employed to transform the governing equation into two sets of algebraic-ordinary differential equations (ODEs), one along in-plane (x) and other along the thickness (z) direction, respectively. These ODEs are solved in closed-form manner, which ensures the same order of accuracy for all the variables (stresses, displacements, and electric variables) by satisfying the boundary and continuity equations in exact manners. A robust algorithm is developed for extracting the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The numerical results are reported for various configurations such as elastic panels, sandwich panels and piezoelectric panels under different sets of boundary conditions. The effect of ply-angle and thickness to span ratio (s) on the dynamic behavior of the panels are also investigated. The presented 3D analytical solution will be helpful in the assessment of various 1D theories and numerical methods.
This paper proposed a novel form of reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall confined with boundary columns. The structural effect of applying steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the wall-column systems was studied. Three full-scale wall samples were constructed including two RC wall-RC column samples with different stirrup ratios and one RC wall-SFRC column sample. Low frequency cyclic testing was carried out to investigate the failure modes, hysteretic behavior, load-bearing capacity, ductility, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation. ABAQUS models were set up to simulate the structural behavior of tested samples, and good agreement was achieved between numerical simulation and experimental results. A further supplementary parametric study was conducted based on ABAQUS models. Both experimental and numerical results showed that increasing stirrup ratio in boundary columns did not affect much on load bearing capacity or stiffness degradation of the system. However, applying SFRC in boundary columns showed significant enhancement on load bearing capacity. Numerical simulation also shows that the structural performances of RC wall-SFRC column system were comparable to a wall-column system fully with SFRC.
In the current paper, the nonlinear resonance response of functionally graded graphene platelet reinforced (FG-GPLRC) beams by considering different boundary conditions is investigated using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Four different graphene platelets (GPLs) distributions including UD and FG-O, FG-X, and FG-A are considered and the effective material parameters are calculated by Halpin-Tsai model. The nonlinear vibration equations are derived by Euler-Lagrange principle. Then the perturbation method is used to discretize the motion equations, and the loadings and displacement are all expanded, so as to obtain the first to third order perturbation equations, and then the asymptotic solution of the equations can be obtained. Then the nonlinear amplitude-frequency response is obtained with the help of the modified Lindstedt-Poincare method (Chen and Cheung 1996). Finally, the influences of the distribution types of GPLs, total GPLs layers, GPLs weight fraction, elastic foundations and boundary conditions on the resonance problems are comprehensively studied. Results show that the distribution types of GPLs, total GPLs layers, GPLs weight fraction, elastic foundations and boundary conditions have a significant effect on the nonlinear resonance response of FG-GPLRC beams.
