  • Multimode boundary-layer transition on a NACA0012 airfoil is experimentally investigated under periodically passing wakes and the moderate level of free-stream turbulence. The periodic wakes are generated by rotating circular cylinders clockwise or counterclockwise around the airfoil. The free-stream turbulence is produced by a grid upstream of the rotating cylinder, and its intensity(Tu) at the leading edge of the airfoil is $0.5\;or\;3.5\;{\%}$. The Reynolds number ($Re_c$) based on chord length (C) of the alrfoil is $2.0{\times}10^5$, and Strouhal number ($St_c$) of the passing wake is about 0.7. Time- and phase-averaged streamwise mean velocities and turbulence fluctuations are measured with a single hot-wire probe, and especially, the corresponding wall skin friction is evaluated using a computational Preston tube method. The wake-passing orientation changes pressure distribution on the airfoil in a different manner irrespective of the free-stream turbulence. Regardless of free-stream turbulence level, turbulent patches for the receding wakes propagate more rapidly than those for the approaching wake because adverse pressure gradient becomes larger. The patch under the high free-stream turbulence ($Tu=3.5{\%}$) grows more greatly in laminar-like regions compared with that under the low background turbulence ($Tu=0.5{\%}$) in laminar regions. The former, however, does not greatly change the original turbulence level in the very near-wall region while the latter does it. At further downstream, the former interacts vigorously with high environmental turbulence inside the pre-existing transitional boundary layer and gradually lose his identification, whereas the latter keep growing in the laminar boundary layer. The calmed region is more clearly observed under the lower free-stream turbulence level and for the receding wakes. The calmed region delays the breakdown further downstream and stabilizes more the boundary layer.

  • This paper describes the phenomena of wake-induced transition of the boundary layers on a NACA0012 airfoil using measured phase-averaged data. Especially, the phase-averaged wall shear stresses are reasonably evaluated using the principle of Computational Preston Tube Method. Due to the passing wake, the turbulent patch is generated in the laminar boundary layer on the airfoil and the boundary layer becomes temporarily transitional. The patches propagate downstream with less speed than free-stream velocity and merge with each other at further down stream station, and the boundary layer becomes more transitional. The generation of turbulent patch at the leading edge of the airfoil mainly depends on velocity defects and turbulent intensity profiles of passing wakes. However, the growth and merging of turbulent patches depend on local streamwise pressure gradients as well as characteristics of turbulent patches. In this transition process, the present experimental data show very similar features to the previous numerical and experimental studies. It is confirmed that the two phase-averaged mean velocity dips appear in the outer region of transitional boundary layer for each passing cycle. Relatively high values of the phase-averaged turbulent fluctuations in the outer region indicate the possibility that breakdown occurs in the outer layer not near the wall.

  • Gas sensor materials capable of detecting hydrogen gases (H$_2$) or nitrogen oxides (NO$\_$x/, primarily NO and NO$_2$) with high sensitivity have attracted much interest in conjunction with the growing concern to the protection of global environments. Beside conventional sensor materials, such as semiconductors., conducting polymers and solid electrolytes, the potential of sensor materials with a new method for detecting hydrogen gases or nitrogen oxides gas has also been tested. The breakdown voltage of porous varistors shifted to a low electric field upon exposure to H$_2$ gas, whereas it shifted to a reverse direction in an atmosphere containing oxidizing gases such as O$_3$ and NO$_2$ in the temperature range of 300 to 600$^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, it was found that the magnitude of the breakdown voltage shift, i. e. the magnitude of sensitivity, was well correlated with gas concentration, and that the H$_2$ sensitivity was improved by controlling the composition of the Bi$_2$O$_3$ rich grain boundary phase. However, NO$\_$x/ sensing properties of porous varistors have not been studies in detail. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of the composition of the Bi$_2$O$_3$ rich grain boundary phase and other additive such as A1$_2$O$_3$ on the hydrogen gases (H$_2$) sensing properties of porous ZnO based varistors.

  • This case research investigates on how hearing aids, which is one of disability aids, is becoming a smart device, focusing on the case of Starkey Hearing Technologies(Starkey Inc.). Starkey, founded in 1967, has been a leader in innovating forms and functions of hearing aids, and has recently introduced the world's first hearing aid implemented with AI and biological sensors. In this study, history of disability aids, hearing aids(especially Starkey Inc.'s), smart wearable devices and smart earphones are compared. It has been found that recently, there has been a breakdown of boundaries between hearing aids and smart wearable devices in terms of their functions, since entertainment and life assistant functions are added to hearing aids. Based on this trend, the development model of disability aids and smart wearable devices are derived, and according social changes are discussed.

  • There are many unfavorable conditions that lead to shortening life of cable by causing dielectric breakdown and aging such as field concentrations occurring in intermediate materials linking each cables, penetration of various impurities, and undermining of cable insulation layers. This paper simulated investigated partial discharge properties of XLPE which is widely used for ultra high voltage cable insulation materials and EPDM which is being used as insulation layer of cable joint materials kit, using Boundary Element Method. The result of computer simulation showed that inner-Void defect caused silicone oil to weaken the E-field effect. and we also found that E-field distribution in EPDM remained relatively lower than that in XLPE.

  • The development of pre-set wavelength G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices are studied in the boundary-layer flows on concave surfaces of 1.0 and 2.0 m radius of curvature. The wavelengths of the vortices were pre-set by thin wires of 0.2 mm diameter placed 10 mm upstream and perpendicular to the concave surface leading edge. Velocity contours were obtained from velocity measurements using a single hot-wire anemometer probe. The most amplified or dominant wavelength is found to be 15 mm for free-stream velocity of 2.1 m/s and 3.0 m/s on the concave surface of R = 1 m and 2 m, respectively. The velocity contours in the cross-sectional planes at several streamwise locations show the growth and breakdown of the vortices. Three different regions can be identified based on the growth rate of the vortices. The occurrence of a secondary instability mode is also shown in the form of mushroom-like structures as a consequence of the non-linear growth of the G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices. By pre-setting the vortex wavelength to be much larger and much smaller than the most amplified one, the splitting and merging of G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices can be respectively observed.

  • In this study, the effect of heat treatment to the electrochemical polarization resistance for the Ti-6Al-4V alloy was measured. The solution heat treatments were carried out at $1066^{circ}E, 966^{\circ}$E$, followed by aging heat treated $550^{circ}E, 600^{circ}E, and 650^{circ}E$. The electrochemical polarization resistance behavior was measured by potentio-dynamic polarization in the 1N $HNO_3$ + 15ppm HF solution. The obtained results were as follows. 1. As solution heat temperature increased. the corrosion potential was increased, whereas passive current density and critical current density were decreased. 2. As aging heat temperature increased, the corrosion potential was almost constant, but passive current density was decreased 3. The results of composition test measured by EDS at grain boundary and near $\gamma'$ precipitates indicated that S, Cl. and Si which originated from base metal were segregated at the grain boundaries Al and Ti which were the main alloying element in $\gamma'$ were depleted at the $\gamma'$ precipitated. The depletion of Al and Ti in $\gamma'$ was caused to early breakdown of passive film.

  • There are two effective methods in use to protect ship ballast tank against corrosion. One is paint coating and the other cathodic protection(CP). The conventional cathodic protection design has mainly relied on the expert's experience. During the last two decades computer modeling has been significantly developed as an advanced design technology for cathoidic protection systems not only for ships, but also for offshore structures. However the present computer modeling of cathodic protection systems have some limitations simulating corrosion in the ballast tank with a deteriorated coating. In this study, "coating breakdown factor" considering coating degradation states with time has been attempted to improve the cathodic protection modeling using the data from literatures.

  • To investigate the electrical properties at the single grainboundary of ZnO varistors, micro-electrodes were fabricated on the surface which was polished and thermally etched. Our micro-electrode had 2000 $\AA$ silicon nitride layer between micro-electrode and ZnO surface. This layer was deposited by PECVD and etched by RIE after photoresistor pattering process using by mask 1. The metal patterning of micro-electrodes used lift-off method. We found that the breakdown voltage of single grainboundary is about 3.5∼4.2 V at 0.1 mA on I-V curves. Also, capacitance-voltage measurement at single grainboundary gave several parameters( $N_{d}$, $N_{t}$, $\Phi$$_{b}$, t) which were related with grainboundary.ary.
