This paper reports on the effect of fuel additive friction modifier on the engine friction and fuel consumption. The test of engine friction and fuel consumption is performed for the each oils and fuels. The TFA4724 friction modifier is added in test oil and fuel. The test results show that total engine friction is a decrease of 0.7-2.0% compared with base fuel, and fuel consumption is improved by 0.3%. The amount of friction reduction corresponds to that of boundary friction loss term in ring-pack friction losses. From the results, it is thought that the additive friction modifier in the fuel is effective to reduce the boundary friction in ring-pack.

Many research works for improving a boundary lubrication performance have been executed by using solid lubricants, and been tried to apply an engine lubrication. However those general lubricants like MoS$_2$ or PTFE have not been applied on engines due to the extreme conditions such as very high temperature and pressure by combustion process in a cylinder. A copper nickel alloy fine particle has been introduced and studied. In this Paper the lubricant using the alloy Particles is applied on a marine diesel engine and assessed by the engine performance test The results showed the increase of cylinder pressure related strongly to the engine efficiency as well as the improving the engine lubrication performance.

Many research works for improving a boundary lubrication performance have been executed by using solid lubricants, and been tried to apply an engine lubrication. However those general lubricants have not been applied on engines due to the extreme conditions such as very high temperature and pressure during combustion process in a cylinder. In this study a lubricant containing copper alloy nano-powder is applied on a diesel engine driven by an electric motor. Torques and shaft vibrations are measured, then an engine friction loss and rotating stability are assessed. The results show that the frequency of the vibration is about the same as that of a general lubricant, but the amplitudes in the both X and Y direction are reduced as well as the friction loss is reduced.
We present a three-dimensional average flow model considering elastic deformation of pad asperities for chemical mechanical planarization. To consider the contact deformation of pad asperities in the calculation of the flow factor, three-dimensional contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions is conducted from computer generated three dimensional roughness data. The average Reynolds equation and the boundary condition of both force and momentum balance are used to investigate the effect of pad roughness and external pressure conditions on film thickness and wafer position angle.
The present work is an attempt to calculate the steady state pressure and perturbed pressure of herringbone grooved journal bearings. A generalized coordinate system is introduced to handle the complex bearing geometry. The coordinates are fitted to the groove boundary and the Reynold's equation is transformed to be fitted to this coordinate system using the Gauss divergence theorem. This method makes it possible to deal with an arbitrary configuration of a lubricated surface. The caharacteristics of finite herringbone groove journal bearing are well calculated using this method.
For the accurate run-out of a light rotor shaft the sliding bearings supplied with externally pressurized air are effectively applied, and it is important to predict the static and dynamic characteristics of rotor-bearing system. In this study direct numerical method is applied to solve the perturbed Reynolds' equation. To solve it the perturbed dimensionless mass flow rate is used as the boundary condition under the inherently-compensated restrictor. The dynamic characteristics of a rotor supported in the externally pressurized air bearings are analyzed, and as a result the orbit of the journal center is calculated. The theoretical results are investigated and discussed.
This paper presents the contact pressure distribution of pin bushing bearings for various lubrication friction modes such as oil film and elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts, a mixed lubrication contact, a boundary contact, and a dry contact. During a sliding contact of a plain bearing, the boundary and dry rubbing contacts are dominated between a piston pin and a pin bushing bearing. This may come from a micro-scale clearance, an explosive impact pressures from the piston head, and an oscillatory motion of a pin bearing. The computed results show that as the oil film parameter $h/{\sigma}$ is increased from the dry rubbing contact to the oil film lubrication friction, the maximum oil film pressure is radically increased due to an increased viscous friction with a thin oil film thickness and the maximum asperity contact pressure is reduced due to a decreased asperity contact of the rubbing surfaces.
Generally quantity of supply oil for piston ring lubrication in an internal combustion engine may be insufficient to fill the entire volume formed in the clearance between piston ring and cylinder liner. Thus oil starvation condition should be considered for the analysis of piston ring lubrication. In order to reasonably estimate amount of oil left on the cylinder liner, adequate boundary condition should be adapted for the analysis of ring pack lubrication. In this analysis of ring pack lubrication of an internal combustion engine, oil starvation and open-end boundary conditions are considered at inlet and outlet of piston rings. It is revealed that piston rings are operated under oil starvation in most operating cycle and the result with these conditions are quite different from that with fully-flooded assumption.
The tribological performance of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) in mineral oils is investigated at ambient temperature. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing of the oils with nanotubes and without those were measured using the ball-on-disk tester. It was found that there were little differences in the frictional forces and wear amounts of two oils. However, the scuffing times of oils with nanotubes were much longer than those of oils without nanotubes in sliding tests. The nanotubes were very effective on maintaining the oil gap and protecting the surfaces in boundary lubricated sliding.
Feasibility study of gas-lubricated bearing in micro gas turbine was performed. Based on Reynolds equation, finite difference method with coupled boundary was developed to analyze bearing characteristics, such as load capacity, mass flow rates and stiffness. By the bearing force and mass flow rates analysis with the variation of supply pressure, bearing clearance and capillary radius, acceptable range of design parameters were suggested in terms of load capacity and stiffness of bearings. Additionally, coupled boundary effect on pressure distribution was investigated and it is stated that coupling could reduce an excitation force due to narrow pressure distribution.
