Using OGCM results, we have shown that the ring-like cold baroclinic eddies associated with cyclonic circulation are shed from late summer to early fall near the Izu-Ogasawara Ridge from the Kuroshio Extension owing to baroclinic instability. On the other hand, warm baroclinic eddies are generated by the intensified western boundary current associated with the warm anomaly accumulated near the Ridge in winter, which corresponds to the basin-wide barotropic intensification of the wind-driven gyre in winter. We are successful in reproducing the behavior of those meso-scale eddies using a simple two-layer primitive equation model driven by seasonal winds associated with the positive curl. Those eddies carry barotropic seasonal signals originated in the Pacific Basin quite slowly west of the ridge; this process introduces a phase lag in the timing of the seasonal maximum transport in the Philippine Basin west of the ridge. It Is demonstrated that the existence of bottom topography, baroclinicity, and nonlinearity due to advection are three necessary elements for the generation of these eddies south of Japan.

The aim of this study is to consider the effect hydrogen on dezincification behavior of Cu-Zn alloys. The investigations include microstructural observations with scanning electron microscope and chemical composition analysis with energy dispersive spectrometer. The dezincification layer was found to occur in high pressure hydrogen atmosphere, not in air atmosphere. In addition, the layers penetrated into the inner side along the grain boundaries in the case of hydrogen condition. The shape of the dezincification layers was porous because of Zn dissolution from the ${\alpha}$ or ${\beta}$ phase. In the case of stress corrosion cracks formed in the Cu-Zn microstructure, the dezincification phenomenon with porous voids was also accompanied by grain boundary cracking.
The relationship between effective permeability and the remanence ratio of an Fe-based amorphous alloy (Metglas 2605S3A) is investigated over a wide frequency range, in an effort to understand magnetization behavior of the alloy. In the frequency range from 1 to 200 kHz, the permeability is maximum at the remanence ratio of 0.4-0.5 and, at frequencies over 500 kHz, the correlation with negative coefficients emerges indicating that the permeability decreases with the remanent ratio, except for the ribbon coated with an insulating layer of MgO which exhibits both high values of the effective permeability and remanence ratio. It is considered from the correlation results that the boundary at which the dominant magnetization mechanism changes from domain wall motion to spin rotation is near 500 kHz. The core loss is also investigated as a function of annealing time when the samples are annealed at a fixed temperature of $435^{\circ}C$. The core loss in most cases decreases with the annealing time, the degree of the loss may consist of the hysteresis loss and anomalous eddy current loss. The two loss components are considered to be of similar magnitudes at low frequencies while, at high frequencies, the dominant contribution to the total loss is the anomalous loss.

Recent experimental data shows that an irregular fuel surface pops up during the combustion test. This may contribute to the agitated boundary layer due to blowing effect of fuel vaporization. Blowing effect can be of significance in determining the combustion characteristics of solid fuel within the oxidizer flow. LES was implemented to investigate the flow behavior on the fuel surface and turbulence evolution due to blowing effect. Simple channel geometry was used for the investigation instead of circular grain configuration without chemical reactions. This may elucidate the main mechanism responsible for the formation of irregular isolated spots during the combustion in terms of turbulence generation. The interaction of turbulent flow with blowing mass flus causes to breakup turbulent coherent structures and to form the small scale isolated eddies near the fuel surface. This mechanism attributes to the formation of irregular isolated sopt on the fuel surface.
The primary objective of this paper is to grasp many characteristics of buckling behavior of latticed spherical domes under various conditions. The Arc-Length Method proposed by E.Riks is used for the computation and evaluation of geometrically nonlinear fundamental equilibrium paths and bifurcation points. And the direction of the path after the bifurcation point is decided by means of Hosono's concept. Three different nonlinear stiffness matrices of the Slope-Deflection Method are derived for the system with rigid nodes and results of the numerical analysis are examined in regard to geometrical parameters such as slenderness ratio, half-open angle, boundary conditions, and various loading types. But in case of analytical model 2 (rigid node), the post-buckling path could not be surveyed because of Newton-Raphson iteration process being diversed on the critical point since many eigenvalues become zero simultaneously.
A new higher shear deformation theory (HSDT) is presented for the thermal buckling behavior of functionally graded (FG) sandwich plates. It uses only four unknowns, which is even less than the first shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the conventional HSDTs. The theory considers a hyperbolic variation of transverse shear stress, respects the traction free boundary conditions and contrary to the conventional HSDTs, the present one presents a new displacement field which includes undetermined integral terms. Material characteristics and thermal expansion coefficient of the sandwich plate faces are considered to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The core layer is still homogeneous and made of an isotropic material. The thermal loads are supposed as uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises within the thickness direction. An energy based variational principle is used to derive the governing equations as an eigenvalue problem. The validation of the present work is carried out with the available results in the literature. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the influences of variations of volume fraction index, length-thickness ratio, loading type and functionally graded layers thickness on nondimensional thermal buckling loads.

The plane elasticity problem of collinear cracks in a layered medium is investigated. The medium is modeled as bonded structure constituted from a surface layer and a semi-infinite substrate. Along the bond line between the two dissimilar homegeneous constituents, it is assumed that as interfacial zone having the functionally graded, nonhomogeneous elastic modulus exists. The layered medium contains three collinear cracks, one in each constituent material oriented perpendicular to the nominal interfaces. The stiffness matrix formulation is utilized and a set of homogeneous conditions relevant to the given problem is readily satisfied. The proposed mixed boundary value problem is then represented in the form of a system of integral equations with Cauchy-type singular kernels. The stress intensity factors are defined from the crack-tip stress fields possessing the standard square-root singular behavior. The resulting values of stress intensity factors mainly address the interactions among the cracks for various crack sizes and material combinations.

Ever since the experimental discovery of graphene exfoiliated from the graphite flakes by Geim et at., this area has drawn a lot of attention for its possible application in IT industry. For the growth of graphene, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been widely used to fabricate the large area graphene. The lateral size of this graphene can be easily controlled by the size of the metal substrate though the chemical etching to remove this substrate is somewhat troublesome. Another problem which is hard to avoid is the folding at the grain boundary. We will discuss the origin of the folding first and introduce the way to avoid this folding. To solve this problem, we have used the various types of micro-thin metal foils. The precise control of hydro-carbon and the carrier gas results in the formation of the graphene on top of substrate. The thickness of graphene layers can be controlled with the control of gas flow on top of Cu substrate in contrast to the previously reported self-limiting growth $behavior^1$. Uniformity of this graphene layer has been checked by micro-raman spectroscopy and SEM. The size of grain can be enhanced by thermal treatment or use of other metal substrate. The dependence of grain size on the lattice size of the substrate will be discussed. By selecting the shape of substrate, we can grow various types of graphene. We will introduce the micron size graphene tube and its application.
The flow interaction between two identical neighboring twin square prisms in a staggered arrangement in an open terrain was investigated experimentally. The downwind prism was mounted on a rigid-aeroelastic setup in an open-terrain boundary layer flow to measure its acrosswind root-mean-square responses and aerodynamic damping ratios. By varying the relative location of the upwind prism and the Scruton number associated with the downwind prism, the acrosswind aeroelastic behavior of the downwind prism was analyzed and compared to that of an isolated one. Results showed that the acrosswind root-mean-square response of the downwind prism could be either suppressed or enhanced by the wake flow produced by the neighboring upwind prism. Besides the assessment of the wake effect of the downwind prism, finally, regressed relationships were presented to describe the variation of the aerodynamic damping ratio so as to predict its acrosswind fluctuating response numerically.
The liquid lead-lithium (Pb-17Li) blanket has many applications in fusion reactors due to its good tritium breeding performance, high heat transfer efficiency and safety. The compatibility of liquid Pb-17Li alloy with the structural material of blanket under magnetic field is one of the concerns. In this study, corrosion experiments China low activation martensitic (CLAM) steel and 316L steel were carried out in a forced convection Pb-17Li loop under 1.0 T magnetic field at 480 ℃ for 1000 h. The corrosion results on 316L steel showed the characteristic with a superficial porous layer resulted from selective leaching of high-soluble alloy elements and subsequent phase transformation from austenitic matrix to ferritic phase. Then the porous layers were eroded by high-velocity jet fluid. The main corrosion mechanism of CLAM steel was selective dissolution-base corrosion attack on the microstructure boundary regions and exclusively on high residual stress areas. CLAM steel performed a better corrosion resistance than that of 316L steel. The high Ni dissolution rate and the erosion of corroded layers are the main causes for the severe corrosion of 316L steel.
