  • To investigate an effect of phase separation on precipitation characteristics of ZnS microcrystals in ma-trix glass ZnS doped borosilicate glasses for nonlinear optical applications were prepared by melting and pre-cipitation process. ZnS dopant contributed to phase separation promotion which increased the phase separa-tion of the matrix glass within immiscibility region. It was also found that ZnS as phase separation promoter showed a similar contribution for some selected glass compositions in miscibility region. The precipitation of ZnS microcrystals occurred in thephase separable glass compoitions. The radius of ZnS microcrystals in-creased with increasing the heat treatment temperature and Na2O contents of matrix glass composition. The ZnS particle sizes estimated by effective mass approximation ranged from about 30 to 80${\AA}$ It was suf-ficiently small to show quantum confinement effect.

  • To improve the thermal resistance of a porous borosilicate lining block, we prepared and applied polysiloxane-fumed silica-ethanol slurry on top of the block and fired the coating layer using a torch for 5 minutes at $800^{\circ}C$. We conducted magnified characterizations using a microscope and XRD analysis to observe phase transformations, and TGA-DTA analysis to determine the thermal resistance. Thermal characterizations showed improved heat resistance with relatively high polysiloxane content slurry. Cross-sectional optical microscope observation showed less melting near the surface and decreased pore formation area with higher polysiloxane content slurry. XRD analysis revealed that the block and coating layer were amorphous phases. TGA-DTA analysis showed an endothermic reaction at around $550^{\circ}C$ as the polysiloxane in the coating layer reacted to form SiOC. Therefore, coating polysiloxane on a borosilicate block contributes to preventing the melting of the block at temperatures above $800^{\circ}C$.

  • Zinc-Borosilicate is used as a side insulator wall to make high breakdown voltage with one Field Limiting Ring in a power p-n junction device in simulation. It is known that surface charge density can be yield at the interface of Zinc-Borosilicate glass / silicon system. When the glass is used as a side insulator wall, surface charge varied potential distribution and breakdown voltage is improved 1090 V under the same structure. The breakdown voltage under varying the surface charge density has a limit value. When the epitaxial thickness is varied, the position of FLR doesn't influence to the breakdown characteristic not only under non punch-through structure but also under punch-through structure. • Nanomachining process, static nanoplowing, is one of the most promising lithographic technologies in terms of the low cost of operation and variety of workable materials. In nanomachining process, chemical effects are more dominant factor compared with those by physical deformation or fracture. For example, during the nanoscratch on a silicon surface in the atmosphere, micro protuberances are formed due to the mechanochemical reaction between diamond tip and the surfaces. On the contrary, in case of chemically stable materials, such as ceramic or glass, surface protuberances are not formed. The purpose of this study is to understand effects of the mechanochemical reaction between tip and surfaces on deformation behaviors of hard-brittle materials. Nanometerscale elasoplastic deformation behavior of single crystal silicon (100) was characterized with micro protuberance phenomena, and compared with that of borosilicate (Pyrex glass 7740). In addition, effects of the silicon protuberances on nanoscratch test results were discussed.

  • In this research, an alumino-borosilicate foamed glass with sound absorption property was prepared using the waste borosilicate glass obtained from the recycling process of waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panel. A 100 g of pulverized waste borosilicate glass with the particle size of under 325 mesh, was mixed with 0.3 g (wt/wt) of graphite, each 1.5 g (wt/wt) of $Na_2CO_3$, $Na_2SO_4$ and $CaCO_3$ as a foaming agent, and 6.0 g (wt/wt) of $H_3BO_3$ and 3.0 g (wt/wt) of $Al_2O_3$ as a pore control agent. Following mixture was under the foaming process for 20 minutes at a foaming temperature of $950^{\circ}C$. The result yielded the foaming agent with 45% of the opened porosity and 0.5-0.7 of the sound absorbing coefficient. This alumino-borosilicate foamed glass with the sound absorption property showed excellent physical and mechanical properties such as density of $0.21g/cm^3$, bending strength of $55N/cm^2$ and compression strength of $298N/cm^2$ which can be ideally used as sound absorption materials with heat-resisting and chemical-resisting property.

  • In this article, the foamed body of glass was manufactured from the waste borosilicate glass produced by wet pulverization process without additional pretreatment which can be used as a recycling method for waste LCD panel glass. Each 100 g of pulverized waste borosilicate glass with the size of less than 270 mesh were mixed with 0.3 weight fraction of carbon and 1.5 weight fraction of $Na_2CO_3$, $Na_2SO_4$ and $CaCO_3$ and let them foamed for 20 minutes at $950^{\circ}C$ to manufacture the foamed body having the density of less than $0.3g/cm^3$. Additionally, adding $SiO_2$ or $H_3BO_3$ to the mixture enabled the foamed body to have efficient formation of open pores which showed the possibility for producing the foamed body with new functionalities such as sound absorption.

  • The effects of $B_2O_3-SiO_2-R(R;CaO,\;BaO,\;ZnO,\;Bi_2O_3)$ borosilicate glass system on the sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties of ceramic/glass composites were investigated as functions of modifier, glass addition ($30{\sim}50\;vol%$) and sintering temperature ($500{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs). The addition of 50 and 45 vol% glass ensured successful sintering below $900^{\circ}C$. Sintering characteristics of the composites were well described in terms of modifier. Borosilicate glass enhanced the reaction with $Al_{2}O_{3}$ to form pores, second phases and liquid phases, which was responsible to component of modifier. Dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_{r},\;Q{\times}f_{o}$) and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (${\tau}_{f}$) of the composite with 50 and 45 vol% glass contents($B_{2}O_{3}:SiO_{2}:R=25:10:65$) demonstrated A-CaBS(7.8, 2,560 GHz, -81ppm/$^{\circ}C$), A-BaBs(5.8, 3.130 GHz, -64 ppm/$^{\circ}C$), A-ZnBS(5.7, 17,800 GHz, -21 ppm/$^{\circ}C$), A-BiBs(45 vol% glass in total)(8.3, 2,700 GHz, -45 ppm/$^{\circ}C$) which is applicable to substrate requiring an low dielectric properties.

  • The effects of lead-borosilicate glass frits on the sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties of ceramic-glass composites were investigated as functions of glass composition of glass addition ($10{\sim}50vol%$), softening point (Ts) of the glass, and sintering temperature of the composites ($500{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 2 h). The addition of 50 vol% glass ensured successful sintering below $900^{\circ}C$. Sintering characteristics of the composites were well described in terms of Ts. PbO addition in to the glass enhanced the reaction with $Al_{2}O_3$ to form liquid phase and $PbAl_{2}Si_{2}O_8$, which was responsible to lower Ts. Dielectric constant(${\epsilon}_r$), $Q{\times}f_0$ and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (${\tau}_f$) of the composite with 50 vol% glass contents ($B_{2}O_{3}:PbO:SiO_{2}:CaO:Al_{2}O_3$ = 5:40:45:5:5) demonstrated 8.5, 6,000 GHz, $-70\;ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively, which is applicable to substrate requiring a low dielectric constant. When the same glass composition was applied sinter $MgTiO_3\;and\;TiO_2,\;at\;900^{\circ}C$ (50 vol% glass in total), the properties were 23.8, 4,000 GHz, $-65ppm/^{\circ}C$ and 31.1, 2,500 GHz, $+80ppm/^{\circ}C$ respectively, which is applicable to filter requiring an intermidiate dielectric constant.
