Two different fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)-coated glass substrates were investigated to find better suitability for CdTe solar cells. Substrate A consisted of FTO (300 nm)/$SiO_2$ (24 nm)/intrinsic $SnO_2$ (30 nm)/borosilicate glass (2.2 mm), and substrate B consisted of FTO (700 nm)/intrinsic $SnO_2$ (30nm)/borosilicate glass (1.8 mm). The overall thickness of the FTO/glass substrates was about 2.5 mm. The total light transmittance of substrate B was much higher than that of substrate A throughout the whole spectral region, even though the thickness of the FTO in substrate B was twice larger than that of the FTO in the substrate A. The short-circuit current greatly increased in substrate B and the external quantum efficiency (EQE) increased over the whole wavelength range. This study shows that the diffuse optical transmittance played a key role in the large EQE value in the blue wavelength region, and the direct transmittance played a key role in the large EQE value in the red wavelength region. The higher transmittance is due to the rough surface generated by the thicker FTO on glass. The conversion efficiency of the CdTe solar cell increased from 12.4 to 15.1% in combination of rough FTO substrate and Cu solution back contact.

Sinterability and microwave dielectric properties of the $Zr1-x(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})xTiO_4$(x=4, 6) system ceramics have been investigated as functions of zinc-borosilicate(ZBS) glass contents and amount of $Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_2$ substitution with a view to applying the composition to LTCC technology. The addition of 25 wt% ZBS glass ensured successful sintering below $925^{\circ}C$. With increasing ZBS glass and $Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_2$ contents increased dielectric constant and sinterability but addition ZBS glass decreased the quality factor significantly due to the formation of an excessive liquid and second phases. The sintered $Zr4(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})6TiO_4$ system ceramics at $925^{\circ}C$ with 25 wt% ZBS glass demonstrated 27.7 in dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$), 3,850 m quality factor($Q{\times}f_0$), and +6 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ in temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($\tau_f$).
We developed an evolutionary optimization process involving a genetic algorithm and combinatorial chemistry (combi-chem), which was tailored exclusively for tile development of LED phosphors with a high luminescent efficiency, when excited by soft ultra violet irradiation. The ultimate goal of our study was to develop oxide red phosphors, which are suitable for three-band white Light Emitting Diodes (LED). To accomplish this, a computational evolutionary optimization process was adopted to screen a Eu$^{3+}$-doped alkali earth borosilicate system. The genetic algorithm is a well-known, very efficient heuristic optimization method and combi-chem is also a powerful tool for use in an actual experimental optimization process. Therefore the combination of a genetic algorithm and combi-chem would enhance the searching efficiency when applied to phosphor screening. Vertical simulations and an actual synthesis were carried out and promising red phosphors for three-band white LED applications, such as Eu$_{0.14}$Mg$_{0.18}$Ca$_{0.07}$Ba$_{0.12}$B$_{0.17}$Si$_{0.32}$O$_{\delta}$, were obtained.
Two types of ground-water sampling techniques for CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) analysis, the cold-welded copper tube method and flame-sealed borosilicate glass ampule method, were compared and evaluated. CFCs concentrations by the copper tube method showed a poor reproducibility among triplicates whereas those by the glass ampule method showed a good agreement and relative standard deviations of triplicates were less than 5%. The poor reproducibility of the copper tube method appears to be attributed to the incomplete sealing in connection between faucets of wellhead and the sampling apparatus. The copper tube method also showed higher CFCs concentrations than the glass ampule method, which is more pronounced for CFC-11 than for CFC-12. The plastic tubings and rubber gasket of faucets in case of the copper tube method possibly contaminated the samples with CFC-11 and CFC-12. The potential of CFCs contamination for the glass ampule method was eliminated by using stainless steel and Nylon only and by connecting the sampling equipment directly to the main discharge pipe of wellhead. The validity of the glass ampule method were also verified by detecting very low level of CFCs for the ground-water sample which is old enough to have negligible CFCs.

Sinterability and microwave dielectric properties of $xZWO_{4}-(1-x)TiO_{2}$ ceramic systems with zinc-borosilicate glass and $TiO_{2}$ contents for LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics) were investigated. The addition of $3{\sim}10\;wt%$ ZBS glass ensured the sinterability below $900^{\circ}C$. In general, increasing ZBS glass content seemed to enhance the sinterability, but the quality factor($Qxf_{0}$) significantly decreased due to the formation of an excessive liquid and second phases. As for the addition of $TiO_{2}$, the dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}_{r}$) and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(${\tau}_{f}$) showed to increase, while the quality factor($Qxf_{0}$) did not show an apparent change. The composition of $0.7xZnWO_{4}-0.3TiO_{2}$ ceramics sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ with 5 wt% ZBS glass demonstrated 21.6 in dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}_{r}$), 14,800 in quality factor($Qxf_{0}$), and $+5\;ppm/^{\circ}C$ in temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(${\tau}_{f}$).
In an evacuated tube solar collector, the stable sealing of the heat pipe to the glass tube is important for the collector to use for a long period of time. The sealing of copper tube to the glass is quite difficult because of the large differences in the physical and chemical properties of the two materials. In this study, therefore, a proper copper oxide layer was induced to improve the chemical bonding of the two materials, and the oxidation state of copper and the interface between copper and glass were examined by XRD, SEM and EDS. Its bonding strength was also measured. Cu$_2$O was formed when the bare copper was heat-treated under 600$^{\circ}C$, while CuO oxide layer was formed above that temperature. The bonding state of CuO to the copper was very poor. The borate treatment of the copper, however, extend the stable forming of Cu$_2$O layer to 800$^{\circ}C$. Borosilicate glass tube was sealed to a copper tube by Housekeeper method only when the sealing part was covered with Cu$_2$O layer. The bonding strength at the interface was measured 354.4N, its thermal shock resistance was acceptable.

Low-temperature sintering and dielectric properties of the $1-xBiNbO_4-xZnNb_2O_6$ ceramics (x=0.3, 0.5, and 0.7) with 10 wt% zinc borosilicate (ZBS) glass was investigated as a function of the substitution of $ZnNb_2O_6$ with a view to applying this system to LTCC technology. The all composition addition of 10 wt% ZBS glass ensured a successful sintering below $900^{\circ}C$. The the amount of $ZnNb_2O_6$ on $ZnNb_2O_6$ ceramics increased the $Q{\times}f$ values, but it decreased the sinterability and dielectric constant due to the higher $Q{\times}f$ value and sintering temperature of $ZnNb_2O_6$ than that of $ZnNb_2O_6$ ceramics. The increase of $ZnNb_2O_6$ content from 0.3 to 0.7 in the $1-xBiNbO_4-xZnNb_2O_6$ ceramics with 10 wt% ZBS glass sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ demonstrated 30~20 in the dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$), 3,500~4,500 GHz in the $Q{\times}f$ value.

Influence of $TiO_2$ on the dielectric properties of the $Bi(Nb_{0.7}Ta_{0.3})O_4$ ceramic with 7 wt% zinc borosilicate(ZBS) glass was investigated as a function of the $TiO_2$ contents with a view to applying this system to LTCC technology. The $Bi(Nb_{0.7}Ta_{0.3})O_4$ ceramic addition of 7 wt% ZBS glass ensured successful sintering below $900^{\circ}C$. But, TCF of $Bi(Nb_{0.7}Ta_{0.3})O_4$ ceramic is large negative values, respectively, it is necessary to adjust to zero TCF for practical applications Therefore, the addition of materials having positive TCF, such as $TiO_2$, might be an effective method for the improvement. In general, increasing addition of $TiO_2$ increased dielectric constant and TCF but it decreased the sinterability and $Q{\tiems}f$ value significantly due to the dielectric property and high sintering temperature of $TiO_2$. $Bi(Nb_{0.7}Ta_{0.3})O_4$ ceramic with 7 wt% ZBS glass and then addition 0.5 wt% $TiO_2$ sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ demonstrated 42 in the dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}_r$), 1,000 GHz in the $Q{\times}f$ value, and $10{\pm}5\;ppm/^{\circ}C$ in the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(${\tau}_f$).

In this study, the microwave dielectric property variations of (1-x)$BiNbO_4-(x)ZnNb_2O_6$ composites (x=0.3, 0.5 and 0.7) with 10wt% zinc borosilicate(ZBS) glass was investigated as a function of the substitution of $ZnNb_2O_6$ with a view to applying thes system to LTCC technology. The all composition addition of 10wt% ZBS glass ensured a successful sintering below $900^{\circ}C$. In addition, a small amount of $Bi_2SiO_5$ as the secondary phase was observed in the all composition. The substitution of $ZnNb_2O_6$ on the $BiNbO_4$ composites increased the $Q{\times}f$ values, but it decreased the sinterability and dielectric constant due to the high sintering temperature and low dielectric constant of $ZnNb_2O_6\;than\;BiNbO_4$ ceramics. The increasing of $ZnNb_2O_6$ content from 0.3 to 0.7 in the (1-x)$BiNbO_4-(x)ZnNb_2O_6$ composites with 10wt% ZBS glass sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ demonstrated 28.1~15.6 in the dielectric constant$({\varepsilon}_r)$, 5,500~8,700GHz in the $Q{\times}f$ value.

Synthesis and dielectric properties of glass-ceramic composites with zinc borosilicate glass(here after ZBS glass) were investigated as functions of $ZnAl_2O_4$ phase synthesis method, glass addition (50~60 vol%) and sintering temperature ($600{\sim}950^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs). The 50 vol% ZBS glass-$Al_2O_3$ and 60 vol% ZBS glass-$ZnAl_2O_4$ ensured successful sintering below $900^{\circ}C$. But the composition of 100-x-y vol% ZBS glass-x vol% $Al_2O_3-y$ vol% ZnO exhibited poor sinterability below $900^{\circ}C$ and the swelling phenomenon occurred in this composite with the large amount of ZBS glass. The sintering behavior of Glass-ceramic composites was affected by the crystallization of $ZnAl_2O_4$ which was formed by the reaction between ZBS glass and $Al_2O_3$. Dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$), $Q{\times}f$ value and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (${\tau}_f$) of the composite with 50 and 60 vol% ZBS glass contents demonstrated $ZBS-Al_2O_3({\varepsilon}_r=5.7)$, $ZBS-ZnAl_2O_4({\varepsilon}_r=5.8)$ which is applicable to substrate requiring an low dielectric properties.
