  • Heat transfer and flow characteristics in a pipe in which the rotating cutting tool for boring a underground pipe without digging were considered in this study. The amount of heat generation due to the friction between the rotating cutter and pipe wall, mixing (low of air and water injected to cool down are the two important factors to design the boring machine Computational fluid dynamics analysis using the Eulerian mixture model and the standard $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was used to analyze the complex phenomena in a pipe during the process. Results show that pipe wall temperature decreased with increasing the cooling water inlet velocity. it is also shown that pipe wail temperature was lowered when the cutter rotation speed was increased until 600 rpm. There was no further cooling effect over 600 rpm.

  • As modern society has been progressed, the demolition method of concrete structure that satisfy the condition of safety, economic efficiency, and environment-friendliness is required. This study investigated problems of existing demolition methods and developed modified method minimizing cooling water and sludge for demolition job. It was also verified the validity of this method based on the finite element methods. A analysis parameters as a number, depth and size of boring, and self weight were introduced for this study, and gave optimal condition for the demolition job and analysis.

  • The study is aimed at the extraction of the groundwater potential areas utilizing the remotely sensed data from satellites. The results of the study are summarized as follows. Analyses of the existing operational wells for groundwater supply indicate that 81% of them are related with lineaments and 51% of them are located at the intersections of lineameters. Thus the features of lineaments are considered to be one of the most important parameters to extract a high potertial area of groundwater. Taking into acount features of lineament, high potential points were extracted from Landsat TM data based on the theory developed in this research, then verifications were made through actual drilling. The result of verification indicates that 9 points produces more 200 cubic meter/day which is the amount required from economical point of view for an operational use. Since the actual boring was not made on the recommended points for 4 points due to the difficulty of access to the exact points and of the approval for boring, they did not yield enough output. The result might have been improved if the exact points were bored and if the boring bad been made deeper, since the maximum depth of boring was limited to 62 meters.

  • In order to investigate the workability of Raise Boring Machine(RBM) such as utilization, penetration rate and advance rate, a vertical shaft of 98 m in length and 3.05 m in diameter was constructed in the layer of conglomerate by using the RBM in this study. In addition, field data from tow different construction sites including water-pump power plant tunnel, roadway tunnel and mining tunnel by RBM were collected and analyzed. The results show that the average weekly bored length is 19.3 m and its average utilization is between 54.3 % and 75.1 % very higher than that of the TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine). It also turns out that the bit force increases linearly with respect to the increase of the RPM(revolution per minute) of RBM. However, the net penetration rate decreases with the increase of bit force, RPM of RBM and depth of shaft. The findings of this study can be used to provide the useful information for the design of shaft and the selection of RBM.

  • To inverstigate the boring insects in Pinus densiflora forests, bait logs were set up in healthy-looking forests of Chunchon Hongchon and in damaged forests(gall formation rate 70----) by Thecodiplosis japonensis of Pyongchang Jeongsun. The period of investigation was from April to August in 1999. Boring insects investigated were 35 species of 12 families. Five species of them were unrecorded species from Korea. Natural enemies investigated were 5 species of 2 families. The prefered parts of tree according to species of boring insects were lower trunk in Siphalinus gigas and 3 other species, middle-stem in Monochamus sutor and 7 other species, and top stem in Orthotomicus suturalis and 1 other species. Hylurgops interstitialis were found in all parts of tree. Sap wood was attacked by Xyleborus validus Cerambycidae, heart wood by Hylobitelus haroldi Siphalinus gigas, and cambium region by Pissodes nitidus P. obscurus Shirahoshizo insidiosus Scolytidae.

  • As demands for being economical, precise drilling process is on the increase. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a step cutter that can be controllable through micro dimension and can be changed from separate manufacturing processes of drilling and boring into an integrated one. In order to attain this object the step cutter is designed with a 3D geometric modeling and the design could be modified easily by using parametric modeling methodology. Also, collision is not occurred during manufacturing process because of cutting simulation. The step cutter is assembled by parts made up of 5-axis machining and sintering. Validation tests are accomplished. They show that developed cutter has characteristics such as reduction of machining time as well as the good surface roughness of the machined hole. Indeed, reliability could be obtained from a durability test.
