  • In this study, conditional simulation was conducted to estimate rock mass rating(RMR) in unsurveyed regions. Sequential Gaussian simulation(SGS) and sequential indicator simulation(SIS) were applied for estimating RMR from the bore hole logging data. The uncertainty of SGS and SIS was verified by sample cross validation. A subset composed of 5 bore hole logging data among the original 30 bore hole logging data was set aside as test data. The remainder was training data. The quality of SGS and SIS estimation on the testing data reflects how well it would perform in an unsupervised setting. SGS and SIS were useful stochastic methods to estimate the spatial distribution of rock mass classes correctly and assess the uncertainty of estimation quantitatively. The result of conditional simulation can offer useful information of rock mass classes such as RMR in unsurveyed regions.

  • The hub hole in a wheel of vehicles usually formed with hole expansion process. Formability of material, especially the hole expansion ratio, is important to produce a fine hub hole. The hub hole expansion process is different from general forming process or bore expansion process in the viewpoint of forming a thick plate. In the hole expansion process of the plate with a hole, as the hole being expanded, the crack is occurred to outward direction at the boundary of a hole. Therefore, it is need to apply the fracture criterion in the hub hole expansion process. In this paper, the hub hole expansion process is simulated with commercial elasto-plastic finite element code, LS-DYNA3D considering some ductile fracture criteria. Fracture mode and hole expansion ratio is compared with respect to the fracture criteria. Analysis results demonstrate that only the effective plastic strain is not adequate to predict the fracture mode in the hub hole. And the analysis results also indicate that the ductile fracture criteria properly predict the fracture mode but hole expansion ratio is different with the result of each other because of their different characteristics.

  • The effects of guide pads on burnishing action and accuracy of machined hole are investigated in drilling with burnishing drill using a speciaaly designed tool experimentally. The cutting forces are balanced at the small forward regions of guide pads. The burnishing action takes place under a high contact pressure between the bore wall and those regions. The over size mechanism of machined hole by the guide pads is discussed.

  • In tunneling and road cuts by blasting, it is of the utmost importance that the remaining rock is of high quality in order to avoid rockfall, rockslides and excessive maintenance work. Therefore, numerous blasting techniques which make use of decoupled charge or shock wave superposition effect have been used to control overbrake. In this paper. some approximate method for the determination of blast load according to the charge condition was introduced at first and, instrumented tests were conducted in small scale transparent material to investigate the shape and amplitude of blast load around the bore hole. Compare to the fully coupled charge, low amplitude of blast load around the bore hole was observed in the decoupled charge and explosion gas pressure was important in the shape of blast load. Therefore, quasi-static behaviour of the crack pattern was shown due to low loading rate.

  • Geophysical well logging techniques which are useful for delineating permeability of geological formation have been reviewed. A new technique for obtaining permeability using conductivity log technique has been discussed. This conductivity logging technique has been tested by monitoring the conductivity change within the model hole using borehole environment water and incoming-outgoing water of different salinity with constant flow rate by maintaining balance between inflow and outflow. Conductivity variation features depended mainly on flow rate, density contrasts due to salinity and temperature contrasts between fluid within the hole and incoming-outgoing fluid. The results of the experiment show uniform change of fluid conductivity within bore hole with time, and a fairly good correlation between the flow rate and the conductivity change rate. This conductivity logging technique is expected to be an efficient tool for determining permeability.

  • Dynamic compaction is an efficient ground improvement technique for loose soils and waste landfill. The improvement is obtained by controlled high energy tamping and its effects vary with the soil properties and energy input. This study demonstrated the application of dynamic compaction method for the improvement of waste landfill in construction site. Various tests and measurements such as standard penetration test, bore hole loading test, crater settlement, ground settlement, pore water pressure were peformed during dynamic compaction field test. From the field test results, the efficiency of dynamic compaction method for the improvement of waste landfill was proved.

  • An in-hole seismic tests, which has been developed for measuring dynamic properties of soils and rock mass, is a bore hole seismic method that has cost effectiveness and practicality. The upgraded features include the motorized triggering system rather than the manual prototype version in the previous studies and a damper between source and receiver in the module. The performance of the probe has been verified through extensive cross-hole tests and in-hole tests at various sites. The dynamic stiffness of subsurface materials and rock mass have been evaluated and recently, the measurement of shear wave velocity was successfully adopted at horizontal holes of tunnel-face to install explosives. So the application of in-hole seismic test for various soil materials was certified.

  • The successful oil storage in the underground cavern is dependent on how to keep the water-tightness around the cavern by the groundwater. If the water-tightness is not secured, gas bubles will leak out and oil migrate to the adjacent empty cavern. An electrical analogy method was employed in studying the influences of the position of horizontal and vertical water curtains, the head of water curtain and the intervals of the cavern spacings and boreholes on the gas leakage and the oil migration into the adjacent empty cavern. The result shows that if the cavern spacing is narrow, the vertical water curtain should be established and if the cavern spacing is more than twice the cavern height, its establishment is not necessary. All the detailed factors required to prevent the oil migration are shown on graphs.
