  • The characteristics of the short document representatives and short queries of OPAC systems need the different ranking algorithms from IR systems. This study tested and analyzed the effectiveness of four sorting schemes and four ranking algorithms and the six effectiveness measurements for the ranked Boolean OPAC systems. The sorting by publication year was better but without significant difference. The cover density ranking was significantly better than the frequency-based ranking of the Fuzzy or DNF models. The simple effectiveness measurement based on the average rank of relevant documents retrieved was as good as the others and better than the precision P.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a framework for predicting searching performance through an understanding of how cognitive ability relates to searching process and outcome. Specifically, this study examined the relationship between spatial visualization, logical reasoning, integrative reasoning, and information searching process and outcome. Information searching process was assessed by seven search process indicators: (1) search command selection: (2) combination of search commands; (3) application of Boolean logic: (4) application of truncation; (5) use of limit search function; (6) number of search statements; and (7) number of search errors made. Searching outcome was assessed by the number of correct answers to search questions. Subjects first took three standardized cognitive tests that measured cognitive abilities, and performed online catalog searching in response to seven information search questions. The searches were logged using Lotus ScreenCam, and reviewed for the analysis. Factor analysis was used to find underlying structures of the seven search process variables. Multiple regression analysis was applied to examine the predictive power of three cognitive variables on three extracted factors, and search outcome. Results of the data analysis showed that individual differences in logical reasoning could predict information searching process and outcome.

  • It Is the purpose of this research to analyse users' understanding how keyword and boolean search work in SELIS(SEoul Women's University Library and Information System) OPAC. Results of analyses of the subject, SELIS OPAC system processing, are: comprehension percentage of keyword extraction is $67(22.48\%)$ out of total 298 persons, no comprehension is $231(77.52\%)$ understanding of boolean OR In keyword search appears $115(22.48\%)$ out of 297, no understanding does $182(77.52\%)$ : comprehension of boolean AND is $98(33.11\%)$ out of 296, no understanding appears $198(66.89\%)$ understanding of using boolean and symbols is $109(36.49\%)$ out of 285, no understanding is $181(63.51\%)$ which Is lower percentage generally. And in SELIS OPAC system, in Intentional analyses to see any difference in understanding of keyword search between experience of keyword search or no, It shows no difference in interrelation $5\%$ level of significance, but In boolean search it does in interrelation $5\%$ level of significance.

  • Recently, rotation symmetric Boolean functions have attracted attention since they are suitable for fast evaluation and show good cryptographic properties. For example, important problems in coding theory were settled by searching the desired functions in the rotation symmetric function space. Moreover, they are applied to designing fast hashing algorithms. On the other hand, for some homogeneous rotation symmetric quadratic functions of simple structure, the exact formulas for their Hamming weights and nonlinearity were found[2,8]. Very recently, more formulations were carried out for much broader class of the functions[6]. In this paper, we make a further improvement by deriving the formula for the Hamming weight of quadratic rotation symmetric functions containing linear terms.

  • This study is to review information retrieval techniques of VOCED database. The VOCED database contains internationally relevant information on vocational and adult education, training and related subjects. The software used is CDS/ISIS and the records are indexed using the APSDEP Thesaurus. When searching the VOCED database, various types of search techniques can be used. Multiple word, phrase, boolean logic, term truncation, defind field, and proximity searching techniques or a mixture of all of them, make it possible to find exactly what you want in seconds.

  • This study compared whether there are significant differences of searching characteristics between the subject specialists and professional searchers in education in terms of internet search engines. The major findings and conclusions from the study are as follows. Subject specialists used more search terms and Boolean operators and spent more times on the computers than professional searchers. However, professional searchers retrieved more relevant documents and had higher precision ratios than subject specialists.

  • It is the analyses of replies showed n the questionnaire consisted of four kinds of matters to see level of knowledge among SELIS (SEoul Women's University Library and Information System) OPAC users of keyword/boolean search. The result of this analyses is : in SELIS search, users who prefer keyword search than any other, who satisfy work of retrieval by means of boolean operator, and who think it easier, show lusher level of knowledge than those who deny it in the questionnaire. Knowledges Presented in the survey are ; characteristics of keyword search, single or double keys, using boolean operator in keyword, knowledge of index, knowledge of stop list, uncontrolled term. keyword search technique, right truncation, correct application of boolean logic operator, and selecting major subject in keyword browsing. The above mentioned knowledges will work as important factors n keyword/boolean search, OPAC. For successful search it requires conceptional knowledge of information retrieval processing, or inquiry word transformation how to search required information, and semantic ability to get result questioned In the given system, when and how to apply the characteristics of the system, and scientific record for user's inquiry, or fundamental computer technology and syntax knowledge to make search word in detail. But so far now important knowledge considered as user's online index search, has been emphasized on knowledge of scientific record, and has been lag of semantic and conceptional knowledge. So, it is recommendable for online index user to train to concentrate semantic knowledge, syntax ability, and conceptional knowledge, rather than scientific technique too much.

  • In this study in order to verify the overall information seeking behavior of the Web-based OPAC users, it was analyzed transaction log file for 7 years. Regarding Web-based OPAC information seeking behavior, it was studied from the perspective of information seeking strategy and information seeking failure. In search strategy, it was analyzed search type, search options, Boolean operator, length of search text, number of uses of word, number of use Web-based OPAC, number of use by time, by week day. Also, in search failure, search failure ratio, search failure ratio by search options, search failure ratio by Boolean operator were analyzed. The result of this study is expected to be utilized for OPAC system and service improvement in the future.

  • The primary purpose of this study is to verify the difference of behavioural characteristics between the subject specialists and professional searchers in searching full-text databases. The major findings and conclusions from this study are summarized as follows. Analyses of Search questions(the degree of understanding with search questions, the degree of difficulty in selecting terms, and the degree of expectation of search results), search processes(the number of search terms used, the number of Boolean operators and qualifiers used, the number of documents browsed and the search time(the connecting time, time to spend per one output document, time to spend per one relevant output document) and search results(the searching efficiency(the number of relevant documents, the ,recall ratio and the precision ratio), the search cost(the total search cost. the search cost per one output document and the search cost per one relevant output document) and the degree of satisfaction with search results) are significantly different between the subject specialists and professional searchers in searching full-text databases.
