  • The fracture strength and fracture modes were studied in 3Y-TZP/NiNi bonding which change their interfacial structure with bonding condition. Average 4-point bending strength of 200 MPa to 400 MPa were achieved. The formation of Ti-oxide phase at the interface critically influenced the bonding strength and fracture mode. The fracture surface of Ti-oxide free interface contained multiphase in some case including ZrO2. From the result it was confirmed that in order to maximize the bonding strength crack deflection from interface to ceramic was required.

  • This study is investigated in variations of micro-structures and mechanical properties of Ti/SUS321L joint with bonding temperature and time using brazing method. According to increasing bonding temperature and time, it was observed the thickness of their reaction layer increased. In tensile test, it was examined that the tensile strength had maximum value at the bonding time of 5min and decreased after bonding time over 5min because of increasing their oxides and intermetallic compounds.

  • The high vacuum hermetic sealing technique ensures excellent performance of MEMS resonators. For the high vacuum hermetic sealing, the customization of anodic bonding equipment was conducted for the glass/Si/glass triple-stack anodic bonding process. Figure 1 presents the schematic of the MEMS resonator with triple-stack high-vacuum anodic bonding. The anodic bonding process for vacuum sealing was performed with the chamber pressure lower than 5 × 10-6 mbar, the piston pressure of 5 kN, and the applied voltage was 1 kV. The process temperature during anodic bonding was 400 ℃. To maintain the vacuum condition of the glass cavity, a getter material, such as a titanium thin film, was deposited. The getter materials was active at the 400 ℃ during the anodic bonding process. To read out the electrical signals from the Si resonator, a vertical feed-through was applied by using through glass via (TGV) which is formed by sandblasting technique of cap glass wafer. The aluminum electrodes was conformally deposited on the via-hole structure of cap glass. The TGV process provides reliable electrical interconnection between Si resonator and aluminum electrodes on the cap glass without leakage or electrical disconnection through the TGV. The fabricated MEMS resonator with proposed vacuum packaging using three-layer anodic bonding process has resonance frequency and quality factor of about 16 kHz and more than 40,000, respectively.

  • Although titanium-ceramic systems have gained substantial interests in dental prosthetic field, bonding problem between porcelain and titanium has not been solved. Main obstacle in titanium-porcelain bonding is excessive oxidation of titanium during porcelain firing. The effects of several coating materials on the bonding strength of titanium-porcelain system were investigated in this study. RF sputtering and electroplating of platinum significantly increased the bonding strength of porcelain-titanium specimen. However, coatings of Ni-Au, Ir, and ceramics(zirconia and hydroxyapatite) did not showed a significant effect on bonding strength. Platinum might be a promising material for the protective layer of excessive oxidation of titanium during porcelain firing, resulting in increase in the bonding strength.

  • This paper is concerned with a fracture strength study of composite adhesive lap joints. The tests were carried out on specimen joints manufactured hybrid stacked composites such as the polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer. The main objective of the work was to test the fracture strength using hybrid stacked composites with a polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer. Tensile and peel strength of hybrid stacked composites are tested before appling adhesive bonding. From results, Natural fiber reinforced composites have lower tensile strength than the original polyester. and The load directional orientation and small amount and low thickness of bamboo natural fiber layer have a good effect on the tensile and peel strength of natural fiber reinforced composites. The failure strength of these materials applied adhesive bonding is also affected by fiber orientation and thickness of bamboo natural fiber layer. There for, Fiber orientation of bamboo natural fiber layer have a great effect on the tensile-shear strength of natural fiber reinforced composites including adhesive bonded joints.

  • An Al film deposited on the Kovar alloy substrate was anodically-bonded to the borosilicate glass, and the bond interfaces was closely investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Al oxide was found to form a layer ~l0 nm thick at the bond interface, and fibrous structure of the same oxide was found to grow epitaxially in the glass from the oxide layer. The fibrous structure grew with the bonding time. The mechanism of the formation of this fibrous structure is proposed on the basis of the migration of Al ions under the electric field. Penetration of Al into glass beyond the interfacial Al oxide was not detected. The comparison of the amount of excess oxygen ions generated in the alkali depletion layer with that incorporated in the Al oxide suggests that the growth of the alkali-ion depletion layer is controlled by the consumption of excess oxygen to form the interfacial Al oxide.

  • The layer structure of the title compound, $[Ni(en)_2(H_2O)_2](CH_3C_6H_4SO_3)_2(H_2O)$ (en = ethylenediamine), consists of discrete cations, anions, and solvate water molecules linked by a hydrogen bonding network. The central Ni atom of the cation layer has a slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry with the ethylenediamine ligands functioning as a N,N'-bidentate and the water ligands bonding through oxygen in a trans arrangement. The p-toluenesulfonate of the anion layer has an alternate sulfonate group directed toward opposite side of the cation layer. This layer structure is stabilized by a hydrogen bond involving the O atoms of the sulfonate, the water ligand, solvate water molecule, and the N atoms of the ethylenediamine.

  • A simply supported hybrid plate consisting of top and bottom functionally graded elastic layers and an intermediate actuating or sensing homogeneous piezoelectric layer is investigated by an elasticity (piezoelasticity) method, which is based on state space formulations. The general spring layer model is adopted to consider the effect of bonding adhesives between the piezoelectric layer and the two functionally graded ones. The two functionally graded layers are inhomogeneous along the thickness direction, which are approached by laminate models. The effect of interlaminar bonding imperfections on the static bending and free vibration of the smart plate is discussed in the numerical examples.

  • Fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) and polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are formed in various ways. In particular, FMLs in which aluminum is laminated as a reinforced layer are widely used. Also, glass fiber-reinforced plastics (GFRPs) are generally applied as fiber laminates. The bonding interface layer between the aluminum and fiber laminate exhibits low strength when subjected to hot press fabrication in the event of delamination fracture at the interface. This study presents a simple method for strengthening the interface bonding between the aluminum metal and GFRP layer of FML composites. The surfaces of the aluminum interface layer are engraved with three kinds of patterns by using the laser machine before the hot press works. Furthermore, the effect of the laser patterns on the interfacial toughness is investigated. The interfacial toughness was evaluated by the energy release rate (G) using an asymmetric double cantilever bending specimen (ADCB). From the experimental results, it was shown that the strip type pattern (STP) has the most proper pattern shape in GFRP/Al FML composites. Therefore, this will be considered a useful method for the safety assessment of FML composite structures.
