  • This paper deals with the separation of MTBE-methanol mixtures using crosslinked Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes with sulfur-succinic acid(SSA) as a crosslinking agent by pervaporation and vapor permeation technique. The operating temperatures, methanol concentration in feed mixtures, and SSA concentrations in PVA membranes were varied to investigate the separation performance of PVA/SSA membranes and the optimum separation characteristics by pervaporation and vapor permeation. And also, for PVA/SSA membranes, the swelling measurements were carried out to study the transport phenomena. The swelling measurements were carried out for pure MTBE and methanol, and MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures using PVA/SSA membranes with varying SSA compositions. There are two factors of the membrane network and the hydrogen bonding. In pervaporation separation was also carried out for MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures at various temperatures. The sulfuric acid group in SSA took an important role in the membrane performance. The crosslinking effect might be over the hydrogen bonding effect due to the sulfuric acid group at 3 and 5% SSA membranes, and this two factors act vice versa on 7% SSA membrane. In this case, the 5% SSA membrane shows the highest separation factor of 2,095 with the flux of 12.79g/㎡·hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30℃ which this mixtures show near the azeotopic composition. Compared to pervaporation, vapor permeation showed less flux and similar separation factor. In this case, the flux decreased significantly because of compact structure and the effect of hydrogen bonding. In vapor permeation, density or concentration of methanol in vaporous feed is lower than that of methanol in liquid feed, as a result, the hydrogen bonding portion between the solvent and the hydroxyl group in PVA is reduced in vapor permeation. In this case, the 7% SSA membranes shows the highest separation factor of 2,187 with the flux of 4.84g/㎡·hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30℃.

  • The brazing of duplex stainless steels which is an essential process for rocket engine manufacturing has been investigated on bonding phenomena and shear strength. The UNS32550 was used for base metal, and the MBF-50 was used for insert metal. Brazing was carried out under the various conditions (brazing temperature : 1473K, 1498K, holding time : 0, 0.3, 0.9, 1.8 ks). There were various phases in the joint because of reaction between liquid insert metal and base metal, In the early stage, BN is formed in the bonded interlayer and base metal near the bonded layer. Cr nitride is formed in the bonded interlayer. The amount of BN and Cr nitride decrease with the increase of holding time. Superior shear strength of 550MPa is obtained by restraining the formation of nitride.

  • The effect of the hydrogen-bonding between thioacetamide (TA) and amides (N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) and N,N-dimethylpropionamide (DMP)) on the hindered rotation of N-C(S) bond of TA was investigated by the nmr spectroscopy. The $^1H$-nmr spectrum of $NH_2$ group in TA was distinctly separated into two peaks with increasing the amount of $CCl_4$ and the effect of amides on the peak separation was in the order of DMF < DMA < DMP. Those phenomena were interpreted in terms of hydrogen-bonding between TA and amide.

  • The antitumor antibiotic (+)-CC-1065 can alkylate N3 of guanine in certain sequences. A previous high-field $^1H$ NMR study on the$(+)-CC-1065d[GCGCAATTG*CGC]_2$ adduct ($^*$ indicates the drug alkylation site) showed that drag modification on N3 of guanine results in protonation of the cross-strand cytosine [Park, H-J.; Hurley, L. H. J. Am. Chem. Soc.1997, 119,629]. In this contribution we describe a further analysis of the NMR data sets together with restrained molecular dynamics. This study provides not only a solution structure of the (+)-CC-1065(N3- guanine) DNA duplex adduct but also new insight into the molecular basis for the sequence- specific interaction between (+)-CC-1065 and N3-guanine in the DNA duplex. On the basis of NOESY data, we propose that the narrow minor groove at the 7T8T step and conformational kinks at the junctions of 16C17A and 18A19T are both related to DNA bending in the drugDNA adduct. Analysis of the one-dimensional $^1H$ NMR (in $H_2O$) data and rMD trajectories strongly suggests that hydrogen bonding linkages between the 8-OH group of the (+)-CC-1065 A-sub-unit and the 9G10C phosphate via a water molecule are present. All the phenomena observed here in the (+)-CC-1065(N3-guanine) adduct at 5'$-AATTG^*$are reminiscent of those obtained from the studies on the (+)-CC-1065(N3-adenine) adduct at $5'-AGTTA^*$, suggesting that (+)-CC-1065 takes advantage of the conformational flexibility of the 5'-TPu step to entrap the bent structure required for the covalent bonding reaction. This study reveals a common molecular basis for (+)-CC-1065 alkylation at both $5'-TTG^*$ and $5'-TTA^*$, which involves a trapping out of sequence-dependent DNA conformational flexibility as well as sequence-dependent general acid and general base catalysis by duplex DNA.

  • The conductivity of a semiconductor is primarily determined by the carriers. To achieve higher conductivity, the number of carriers should be high, and an energy trap level is created so that the carriers can cross the forbidden zone with low energy. Carriers have a crystalline binding structure, and interfacial mismatching tends to make them less conductive. In general, high-concentration doping is typically used to increase mobility. However, higher conductivity is also observed in non-orthogonal conjugation structures. In this study, the phenomena of higher conductivity and higher mobility were observed with space charge limiting current due to tunneling phenomena, which are different from trapping phenomena. In an atypical structure, the number of carriers is low, the resistance is high, and the on/off characteristics of capacitances are improved, thus increasing the mobility. ZTO thin film improved the on/off characteristics of capacitances after heat treating at $150^{\circ}C$. In charging and discharging tests, there was a time difference in the charge and discharging shapes, there was no distinction between n and p type, and the bonding structure was amorphous, such as in the depletion layer. The amorphous bonding structure can be seen as a potential barrier, which is also a source of space charge limiting current and causes conduction as a result of tunneling. Thus, increased mobility was observed in the non-structured configuration, and the conductivity increased despite the reduction of carriers.

  • Tubular steel sections are widespread all over the world because of their strength and aesthetic appearance. Tubular steel members may exhibit local buckling such as elephant foot or overall buckling under extreme compression load. Recently, external bonding of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) sheets for strengthening these members has been explored through experimental research. This paper presents three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate the structural behavior of strengthening tubular steel members with FRP against local and overall buckling phenomena. Out-of-roundness and out-of-straightness imperfections were introduced to the numerical models to simulate the elephant foot and overall buckling, respectively. The nonlinear analysis preferences such as the integration scheme of the shell elements, the algorithm for solution of nonlinear equations, the loading procedure, the bisection limits for the load increments, and the convergence criteria were set, appropriately enough, to successfully track the sophisticated buckling deformations. The agreement between the results of both the presented FEA and the experimental research was evident. The FEA results demonstrated the power of the presented rigorous FEA in monitoring the plastic strain distribution and the buckling phenomena (initiation and propagation). Consequently, the buckling process was interpreted for each mode (elephant foot and overall) into three sequential stages. Furthermore, the influence of FRP layers on the nonlinear analysis preferences and the results was presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of exposed column-base plate strong-axis connections for small-sized steel buildings. Even though the seismic design for small-sized buildings became mandatory since Dec.2017, the arbitrary connection details in steel structure have been applied at the construction site, which is considered to be very insufficient to secure structural safety and stability considering the increased seismic risk. Therefore, a series of experimental test programs had been carried out to develop enhanced connection details in order to ensue the adequate seismic safety of small buildings. The hysteretic behavior of the exposed column-base plate connections commonly used in Korea seem to be very pure poor due to the "Rocking" phenomena between anchor plate and concrete by the residual plastic deformation of anchor bolts. A series of hysteretic tests were conducted to find the solution to overcome the "Rocking" phenomena of the exposed column-base plate connections, finally the stable seismic behavior was obtained by uisng at least 8 anchor bolts with good bonding strength to the protptype specimen.

  • Linear annealing method was developed to increase the bond strength of Si wafer pair mated at room temperature instead of conventional furnace annealing method. It has been known that the interval of the two mating wafer surfaces decreases and the density of gaseous phases generated at the interface increases with increase in an-nealing temperature. The new annealing method consisting of one heat source and light reflecting mirror used these two phenomena and was applied to Si$\mid$$\mid$Si and Si$\mid$$\mid$$SiO_2/Si$ bonding. The bonding interface observed directly by using IR camera and HRTEM showed clear bonding interface without any unbonded areas except the area generated by the dusts inserted into the mating interface at the room temperature. Crack opening method and direct tensile test was appplied to measure the bond strength. The two methods showed similar results. The bond strength increased continuoustly with the increase of annealing temperature.

  • The absorption wavelength of the protonated retinal Schiff base can be controlled by the surrounding environment. An external anion is related to fine adjustment of the absorption wavelength. The addition of anion to retinochrome solution caused blue shift in spectra. The increase of the shift was dependent on the ion concentration. The large shift value was obtained as 20 nm at the saturated concentration of nitrate. The shift intensity for the nitrate addition exceeded that of chloride. Seemingly, it depends on the ionic strength or lyotropic character of the anion. However, neither of sulphate nor gluconate ion showed remarkable blue shift. These phenomena were accounted for with (1) delocalization of the positive charge in the conjugated polyene system, (2) ionic bonding strength between the counter ion (glutamate) and the proton, and/or (3) interaction of the added anion with the proton on Schiff base.
