  • The bonded tendon was adopted to the reactor building of some operating nuclear power plants in Korea and the assessment of the effective prestress force on the bonded tendon is being issued as an important pending problem for continuous operation beyond their design life. The sensitivity analysis of various parameters was carried out to evaluate the effective prestress force using the system identification technique and the optimal parameters were determined for SI technique in this study. The 1/5 scaled post-tensioned concrete beams with the bonded tendon type were manufactured and in order to investigate the relationship of the natural frequency and the displacement to the effective prestress force, impact test, SIMO sine sweep test and bending test using the optical fiber sensor and the compact displacement transducer were carried out. As a result of tests, both the natural frequency and the displacement show the good relationship with the effective prestress force and both parameters are available for the SI technique to estimate the effective prestress force.

  • During their life span, post-tensioned concrete structures may be exposed to thermal loads. Therefore, there has been a growing interest in research on the advanced analysis and design of post-tensioned concrete slabs subjected to thermal loads. This paper investigates the structural behaviour of post-tensioned one-way spanning concrete slabs. A nonlinear finite element model for the analysis of post- tensioned unbonded and bonded concrete slabs at elevated temperatures was developed. The interface between the tendon and surrounding concrete was also modelled, allowing the tendon to retain its profile shape during the deformation of the slab. The load-deflection behaviour, load-force behaviour in the tendon, and the failure modes are presented. The numerical analysis was conducted by the finite element ANSYS software and was carried out on two different one-way concrete slabs chosen from literature. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of several selected parameters on the overall behavior of post-tensioned one-way concrete slab. These parameters include the effect of tendon bonding, the effect of thermal loading and the effect of tendon profile. Comparison between uniform thermal loading and nonuniform thermal loading showed that restrained post tensioned slab with bottom surface hotter has smaller failure load capacity.

  • The current study is a part of series of research about the evaluation method of the unbonded tendon stress in prestressed concrete member at flexural failure. As the experimental study, a test program with 14 beams and slabs was planed to identify the contribution of each important variable. The variables are (1) the effective prestress, (2) the concrete strength, (3) the amount of tendons (4) the amount of bonded reinforcements, (5) the loading type, (6) the span/depth ratio. It was found that the tendon stress increment decreases as the effective prestress increases. Also, the contributions of concrete strength, amount of tendons, bonded reinforcements, and loading type were observed to affect on tendon stresses. However, the tendon stress increments were minimal at high values of span/depth in contrast with the ACI Code.

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction of Nonlinear characteristics of prestressed concrete bridges by strengthened of externally tendon considering the work sequence, using beam-column element based on flexibility method and tendon element. The beam-column element was developed with reinforced concrete material nonlinearities which are based on the smeared crack concept. The fiber hysteresis rule of beam-column element is derived from the uniaxial constitutive relations of concrete and reinforcing steel fibers. The tendon element represent the bonded tendon and unbonded tendon behaviors. Beam-column element and tendon element was be subroutine A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of RC and PSC structures was used. The proposed numerical method for prestressed concrete structures by strengthened of externally tendon is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • This paper describes an experimental study planned to examine the effects of important design variables which were used in the proposed equation by authors. Fourteen beams and slabs were designed with the variables, such as effective prestress, concrete strength, amount of tendons, amount of bonded reinforcements, loading type, and span/depth ratio. Then, deflections and tendon stresses were measured and compared according to the parametric variations of the selected variables. It was found that the tendon stress increment decreases as the level of effective prestress or the amount of unbonded tendons and bonded reinforcements increases. Also, the contributions of concrete strength, and loading type were observed to affect on the tendon stresses. However, the stress increments of unbonded tendon were minimal alt high values of span/depth in contrast with the ACI code.

  • The analysis and design of composite girders prestressed by external tendons involve difficulties related to the position of anchorages and the construction sequences. In this paper, the efficiency of the external tendon profiles and the position of anchorages in examined for the internal and external prestressing of statically indeterminate structures. It is shown that strengthening of a prestressed girder can be accomplished using a variety of methods; bonded external prestressing, tendon replacement and unbonded external prestressing.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the relations between the unbonded tendon stress and the influential parameters which were bonded reinforcement ratio, span/depth ratio, and loading type. To this end, first, the influence of parameters were examined with twenty eight test results obtained from references. Then, an experimental study was carried out with 21 test specimens. The investigation with previous and current tests revealed the followings; (1) The bonded reinforcement ratio and prestressing ratio were proved to be an important variables on the unbonded tendon stress. (2) The ratio of span to depth and type of loading affected partially the unbonded tendon stress although their effects varied depending on bonded reinforcement ratio. (3) AASHTO LRFD Code and Moon/Lim\`s design equation predicted the test results well with some safety margins.

  • This study proposes an experimental formula that can estimate the applied tensile stress of a bonded PSC by measuring a longitudinal stress wave velocity of tendon. To develop practical formula, the various bonded PSC specimens are constructed with different levels of prestresses. For all the bonded PSC specimens, the longitudinal impact-echo tests are repeated with various experimental conditions. Considering a few influence factors such as temperature, length and the number of strands, the application of the law of similarity results in a nondemensional experimental formula that could estimate existing tensile stress on tendon by measuring its longitudinal stress wave velocity. Next, a feasibility study of proposed approach has been conducted for a real reactor building containment. The estimated stress levels of two vertical tendons embedded in the nuclear plant are close to their design values.

  • Recently, the externally prestressed unbonded concrete structures are increasingly being built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete beams with external unbonded tendon is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in that the slip of tendons at deviators and the change of tendon eccentricity occurs as external loads are applied in external unbonded PSC beams. The purpose of the present paper is therefore to evaluate the flexural behavior by performing static flexural test according to tendon area and tendon force. From experimental results, before flexural cracking, there was no difference between external members and bonded members. However, after cracking, yielding load of reinforcement, ultimate load, and the tendon stress of external members was lower than that of bonded members. For the relationship of load-tendon stress, the increasing of tendon strain was inversely proportional to the initial tendon force. However, even if the initial tendon force was large, the tendon strain with small effective stress was smaller than that with large effective stress. The concrete compressive strain was proportional to the effective stress of external tendon. From the comparison between test results and codes, the ACI-318 could not consider the effect of tendon force or effective stress, and especially the results of ACI-318 were very small, so it was very conservative. And the AASHTO 1994 could be influenced on the tendon area, initial force and effective stress, but as it was made on the basis of internal unbonded tendon, its results were much larger than the test results. For this reason, the new correct predict equation of external tendon stress will be needed.

  • The unbonded prestressed concrete(PSC) members exhibit very different structural behavior from that of bonded PSC members because of having different tendon stress increment. Recently, AASHTO changed the provision of ultimate tendon stress with unbonded tendons, because some researches tried to improve the provision of ultimate tendon stress with unbonded tendons. The purpose of the present study is to compare various Codes with the ultimate failure stresses of prestressing(PS) steels for the unbonded PSC members. To this end, Some national Codes have been collected and analyzed. A series of major influencing variables have been included in the analysis. It was found that the span-depth ratio, neutral axis depth-effective depth ratio, concrete compressive strength, effective prestress, and prestressing steel ratio have great influence on the ultimate failure stress of PS steel in unbonded PSC members. The Comparison indicates that existing formulas including ACI and domestic Code's equations shows some unwarranties. The present study allows more realistic analysis and design of prestressed concrete structures with internal unbonded tendons.
