This paper introduces scarf welding process of thin substrates using flexible laser transmission welding (f-LTW) technology. We examined the behavior of tensile strength relative to the scarf angle for flexible applications. Thin plastic substrates with the thickness of less than 100 ㎛ were bonded and a jig to form a slope at the edge of the substrate was developed. By developing the scarf welding process, we successfully created a flexible bonding technology that maintains joint's thickness after the process. The tensile strength of the joint was assessed through uniaxial test, and we found that the tensile strength increases as the slope of bonding interface decreases. By conducting stress analysis at the bonding interface with respect to the slope angle, design factor of bonding structure was investigated. These findings suggest that the tensile strength depends on the geometry of the joint, even under the same process conditions, and highlights the significance of considering the geometry of the joint in welding processes.

Application of steel plates is one of widely used methods for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beams that are insufficient of shear capacity. While the existing method applying solid steel plates provides good shear rigidity, however, it is concerned by brittle bond failure patterns, inefficient material usage, and low constructability. The use of strap type steel plates has also shortcomings of low strenthening effect due to small interface bonding area and ununified behavior between plates and main body. Therefore, this study aims to introduce the shear strengthening method using slit type steel plate, which can solve out the problems aforementioned, and to verify its strengthening effects on shear capacity. A total of 13 specimens strengthened by slit type steel plates were fabricated with primary test parameters of plate width, slit spacing, and plate thickness. The test results from this study were also compared to those from the existing research on RC beams strengthened by strap type steel plates, and the strengthening effects on shear capacity of specimens having bonded slit type steel plates were quantitatively analyzed. The test results showed that the RC beams strengthened by slit type steel plates had greater shear capacities than those with strap type steel plates, which is considered to be the effects of improved composite behavior and larger interface bonding area in the RC beams strengthened by the slit type steel plates.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of hydrophilic primer, which claim to retain adequate bond strength on moistened enamel resulting from moisture or saliva contamination, by comparing the shear bond strength and adhesive failure patterns of brackets bonded using hydrophilic primer and conventional hydrophobic primer. Brackets were bonded to human premolars embedded in metal cylinders utilizing light cured adhesive, primed with either a hydrophilic primer(Transbond fm primer) or a conventional hydrophobic primer(Transbond XT primer). Each sample was exposed to varying degrees of artificial saliva contamination during the priming process. The shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine, and the adhesive failure patterns after debonding were visually examined by strereomicroscope and assessed using the adhesive remnant index(ARI). The results were as follows 1. In dry conditions, no significant differences in shear bond strength between Transbond W and Transbond XT primers were found. 2. Transbond MIP primer exhibited a significantly higher shear bond strength than Transbond XT primer in saliva-contaminated conditions, regardless of the degree of contamination. 3. When contaminated with one coat of saliva, Transbond MIP primer did not exhibit significant differences in shear bond strength compared to the dry condition. When contaminated with two coats of saliva, Transbond MIP primer exhibited a singnificantly lower shear bond strength compared to the dry condition. 4. The adhesive remnant index of the adhesive failure pattern had a tendency to decrease, as the degree of saliva contamination increased. Bracket-adhesive interface failure was observed in more than half of the saliva contaminated samples utilizing Transbond MIP primer, whereas the bond failure sites of the Transbond XT primer samples occurred almost exclusively at the adhesive-enamel interface in saliva-contaminated conditions. The results of this study suggest that in cases where moisture control is difficult, Transbond MIP primer is an effective alternative to conventional hydrophobic primers.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of mechanical and thermal fatigue on the shear bond strength(SBS) in orthodontic brackets bonded to human premolars with chemically cured adhesive(Mono-$Lok^2$, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics). Two types of metal brackets (Ormesh, Microloc) and three types of ceramic brackets (Fascination, Starfire, Transcend 2000) were used in this study. The $10^6$ loadcycles of $|7.4{\times}10{^2}sin2{\pi}ft|g{\cdot}cm$ and the 1,000 thermocycles of 15 second dwell time each in $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ baths were acturated as mechanical and thermal fatigue stress, and SBS were measured after each fatigue test. The fracture sites were examined by stereoscope and scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows, 1. In static shear bond test, Fascination brackets showed the maximum SBS($20.78\pm3.45$ MPa) and Microloc brackets showed the minimum SBS($14.88\pm3.10$ MPa). Fascination and Starfire brackets showed significantly greater SBS than Microloc brackets(P<0.05). 2. In mechanical fatigue test, Fascination brackets showed the maximum SBS ($20.19\pm3.45$ MPa) and Starfire brackets showed the minimum SBS($9.10\pm8.33$ MPa). The SBS or Transcend 2000 brackets(P<0.01) and Starfire brackets(P<0.05) significantly decreased after $10^6$ loadcycles. 3. In thermocycling test, Ormesh brackets showed the maximum SBS ($19.36\pm2.76$ MPa) and Starfire brackets showed the minimum SBS($11.94\pm6.86$ MPa). The SBS of Transcend 2000(P<0.01), Microloc and Starfire brackets(P<0.05) significantly decreased after $10^3$ thermocycles. 4. Failure sites of thermocycling groups were similar to those of static groups but after mechanical fatigue test, Ormesh and Transcend 2000 brackets failed at the bracket/resin interface and Microloc brackets failed within adhesive. Facination brackets failed at the enamel/resin interface irrespective of experimental condition.
This study was to compare the microshear bond strength $({\mu}SBS)$ of light- and chemically cured composites to enamel coupled with four 2-step self-etch adhesives and also to evaluate the incompatibility between 2-step self-etch adhesives and chemically cured composite resin. Crown segments of extracted human molars were cut mesiodistally, and a 1 mm thickness of specimen was made. They were assigned to four groups by adhesives used: SE group (Clearfil SE Bond) AdheSE group (AdheSE), Tyrian group (Tyrian SPE/One-Step Plus), and Contax group (Contax) Each adhesive was applied to a cut enamel surface as per the manufacturer's instruction. Light-cured (Filtek Z250) or chemically cured composite (Luxacore Smartmix Dual) was bonded to the enamel of each specimen using a Tygon tube. After storage in distilled water for 24 hours, the bonded specimens were subjected to ${\mu}SBS$ testing with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. The mean ${\mu}SBS$ (n=20 for each group) was statistically compared using two-way ANOVA, Tukey HSD, and t test at 95% level. Also the interface of enamel and composite was evaluated under FE-SEM. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. The ${\mu}SBS$ of the SE Bond group to the enamel was significantly higher than that of the AdheSE group, the Tyrian group, and the Contax group in both the light-cured and the chemically cured composite resin (p < 0.05). 2. There was not a significant difference among the hdheSE group, the Tyrian group, and the Contax group in both the light-cured and the chemically cured composite resin. 3. The ${\mu}SBS$ of the light-cured composite resin was significantly higher than that of the chemically cured composite resin when same adhesive was applied to the enamel (p < 0.05). 4. The interface of enamel and all 2-step self-etch adhesives showed close adaptation, and so the incompatibility of the chemically cured composite resin did not show.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of mechanical and thermal fatigue stress on the shear, tensile and shear-tensile combined bond strengths(SBS, TBS, CBS) in various orthodontic brackets bonded to human premolars with chemically cured adhesive(Ortho-one, Bisco, USA). Five types of commercially available metal brackets with various bracket base configurations of Photoetched base(Tomy, Japan), Non-Etched Foil Mesh base(Dentaurum, Germany), Micro-Etched Foil Mesh base(Ortho Organizers, USA), Chessboard base(Daesung, Korea), and Integral base(3M Unitek, USA) were used. Samples were divided into 3 groups, the first group was acted with shear-tensile combined loads($45^{\circ}$) of 200g for 4 weeks(mechanical fatigue stress), the second group was subjected to the 5,000 thermocycles of 15 second dwell time each in $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ baths(thermal fatigue stress), and the third group was the control. Bond strengths were measured at the crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The cross-section of bracket base/adhesive interface and the fracture surface were examined with the stereoscope and the scanning electron microscope. The resin remnant on bracket base surface was assessed by ART(Adhesive Remnant Index). The obtained results were summarized as follows, 1. In static bond strength, Photoetched base bracket showed the maximum bond strength and Integral base bracket showed the minimum bond strength(p<0.05). In all brackets, shear bond strength(SBS) was in the greatest value and shear-tensile combined strength(CBS) was in the least value(p<0.05). 2. After mechanical fatigue test, Photoetched base bracket showed the maximum bond strength and Integral base bracket showed the minimum bond strength(p<0.05). In Photoetched base bracket and Micro-Etched Foil Mesh base bracket, shear bond strength(SBS), tensile bond strength(TBS) and shear-tensile combined strength(CBS) were decreased after mechanical fatigue test(p

Deterioration of long-term dentin adhesion durability is thought to occur by hydrolytic degradation within hydrophilic domains of the adhesive and hybrid layers. This study investigated the hypothesis that priming the collagen network with an organic solvent displace water without collapse and thereby obtain good bond strength with an adhesive made of hydrophobic monomers and organic solvents. Three experimental adhesives were prepared by dissolving two hydrophobic monomers, bisphenol-A-glycidylmethacrylate (Bis-GMA) and triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), into acetone, ethanol or methanol. After an etching and rinsing procedure, the adhesives were applied onto either wet dentin surfaces (wet bonding) or dentin surfaces primed with the same solvent (solvent-primed bonding). Microtensile bond strength (MTBS) was measured at 48 hrs, 1 month and after 10,000 times of thermocycles. The bonded interfaces were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Regardless of bonding protocols, well-developed hybrid layers were observed at the bonded interface in most specimens. The highest mean MTBS was observed in the adhesive containing ethanol at 48 hrs. With solvent-primed bonding, increased MTBS tendencies were seen with thermo cycling in the adhesives containing ethanol or methanol. However, in the case of wet bonding, no increase in MTBS was observed with aging.
Purpose. This study aimed to compare and evaluate the shear bond strength between various temporary prostheses resin blocks fabricated by subtractive and additive manufacturing methods bonded to self-curing reline resin. Materials and methods. The experimental groups were divided into 4 groups according to the manufacturing methods of the resin block specimens and each specimen was fabricated by subtractive manufacturing (SM), additive manufacturing stereolithography apparatus manufacturing (AMS), additive manufacturing digital light processing manufacturing (AMD) and conventional self-curing (CON). To bond the resin block specimens and self-curing resin, the reline resin was injected and polymerized into the same location of each resin block using a silicone mold. The shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine, and the surface of the adhesive interface was examined by scanning electron microscopy. To compare between groups, one-way ANOVA was done followed by Tukey post hoc test (α = 0.05). Results. The shear bond strength showed higher values in the order of CON, SM, AMS, and AMD group. There were significant differences between CON and AMS groups, as well as between CON and AMD groups. but there were no significant differences between CON and SM groups (P > .05). There were significant differences between SM and AMD groups, but there were no significant differences between SM and AMS groups. The AMS group was significantly different from the AMD group (P < .001). The most frequent failure mode was mixed failures in CON and AMS groups, and adhesive failures in SM and AMD groups. Conclusion. The shear bond strength of SM group showed lower but not significant bond strength compared to the CON group. The additive manufacturing method groups (AMS and AMD) showed significantly lower bond strength than the CON group, with the AMD group the lowest. There was also a significant difference between the AMD and SM group.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the contact angle made by 3 kinds of self etching primers (Clearfil SE Bond, AdheSE, and Tyrian) on dentin and to measure the microtensile bond strength of resin composite to dentin using these self-etching primers. Contact angle between each of 3 self etching primers and polished dentin surface was measured (n=30) by contact angle analyzer and the result was analyzed by One-way ANOVA. For the measurement of microtensile bond strength, polished dentin surface was treated with each of 3 self etching primers and dentin adhesives. Z-250 composite resin was built-up with a height of 5 mm on the adhesive-treated surface and light cured for 40s with a halogen light curing unit. Thereafter, each tooth was sectioned into slabs perpendicular to the bonded interface and trimmed (n=45). The microtensile bond strength was measured with universal testing machine and the result was analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test. AdheSE group showed the highest contact angle followed by Clearfil SE group and Tyrian group (p<0.05). AdheSE group and Clearfil SE group showed significantly higher microtensile bond strength than Tyrian group (P<0.05).
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects on the elastic moduli of the adhesive and the hybrid layer from thermocycling. Twenty one human molars were used to create flat dentin surfaces. Each specimen was bonded with a light-cured composite using one of three commercial adhesives (OptiBond FL [OP], Clearfil SE Bond [CL], and Xeno III [XE]). These were sectioned into two halves and subsequently cut to yield 2-mm thickness specimens; one specimen for immediate bonding test without thermocycling and the other subjected to 10,000 times of thermocycling. Nanoindentation test was performed to measure the modulus of elasticity of the adhesive and the hybrid layer, respectively, using an atomic force microscope. After thermocycling, XE showed a significant decrease of the modulus in the adhesive layer (p < 0.05). Adhesives containing hydrophilic monomers are prone to hydrolytic degradation. It may result in the reduced modulus of elasticity, which leads to the mechanically weakened bonding interface.
