  • The spectral and photophysical properties of trans-1-pyrazinyl-2-(3-quinolinyl)ethylene (trans-3- PyQE) are investigated under various conditions in order to obtain information on ground and excited states. The absorption spectrum of trans-3-PyQE changes slightly with varying degree of solvent polarity ; the. fluorescence spectrum is shifted to the red and becomes broad and structureless as the solvent polarity increases. The fluorescence quantum yield increases with increasing solvent polarity. The fluorescence intensity of trans-3-PyQE decreases as the concentration of methyl iodide increases. The fluorescence spectra of trans-3-PyQE changes markedly upon the variation of the excitation wavelength, presumably due to an equilibrium between conformers originating from the rotation of a quasi-single bond between the quinolinyl group and ethylenic carbon atom. These results indicate that the spectral and photophysical properties of trans-3-PyQE are strongly influenced by solvent, heavy atom, and an equilibrium between conformers

  • The dependence of the IR optical properties of PMMA/$Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite on the alumina content was investigated in the wavelength range of $3500-2800cm^{-1}$. The samples were prepared via emulsion polymerization technique using oleic acid as a coupling agent. Grafting density calculations were carried out by means of elemental analysis CHN to yield the best coupling agent content. FTIR analysis confirmed the existence of a chemical bond between aluminum oxide and oleic acid. The outcomes of XRD analyses showed the presence of cubic gamma aluminum oxide in the nanocomposite, in contrast to the amorphous nature of PMMA. TEM images showed the core-shell morphology of the particles other than pristine PMMA. Optical constants of the nanocomposite were calculated based on FTIR spectra and the Kramers-Kronig equations. The presence of nano alumina modified some of the optical indexes in IR region.

  • Resorcinol-tannin-formaldehyde-latex(RTFL) adhesive was prepared to bond SBR to nylon in reinforced rubber composites. A key factor of adhesive contributes to the adhesion strength between SBR and nylon was the toughness of adhesive itself. Although the stiffness and strength of adhesive film decreased slightly with increasing level of tannin substitution for resorcinol in a standard RFL adhesive, the maximum toughness of adhesive film, which showed yield behavior and high dissipative capacity, was obtain by 60% tannin substitution. However, a marked softening and reduction in toughness occurred at sufficiently high substitution. Also, the adhesive film, which was heat-treated to simulate cure, showed higher strength than the unheated film. Thus, the properties of tannin containing adhesives could be optimized by using 40/60 weight ratio of the resorcinol/tannin in RTFL adhesive composition as well as heat treatment of adhesive film.

  • Neopentyl arenesulfonates react with secondary alkylmagnesium chlorides in the presence of dppfNiCl2 to produce the corresponding arenes via the reductive cleavage of carbon-sulfur bond. Highest yield is obtained by using three equivalents of Grignard reagent to a mixture of arenesulfonate and dppfNiCl2 in Et2O at room temperature. This reaction represents a novel method allowing the efficient hydrogenolysis of sulfur-containing groups in aromatic compounds.

  • Deteriorative effects of steel corrosion on the structural response of reinforced concrete are simulated for varying degrees of corrosion. The simulation approach is based on a three-dimensional irregular lattice model of the bulk concrete, in which fracture is modeled using a crack band approach that conserves fracture energy. Frame elements and bond link elements represent the reinforcing steel and its interface with the concrete, respectively. Polylinear stress-slip properties of the link elements are determined, for several degrees of corrosion, through comparisons with direct pullout tests reported in the literature. The link properties are then used for the lattice modeling of reinforced concrete beams with similar degrees of corrosion of the main reinforcing steel. The model is successful in simulating several important effects of steel corrosion, including increased deflections, changes in flexural cracking behavior, and reduced yield load of the beam specimens.

  • We have investigated adsorption of selenophene on Si(100) at room temperature using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) in the partial electron yield (PEY) mode. The Si 2p, C 1s, Se 3d spectra of selenophene on Si(100) show that selenophene is nondissociatively chemisorbed on Si(100)-$2{\times}1$ through [2+2] cycloaddition. NEXAFS has been conducted to characterize the adsorption geometry of selenophene on Si(100). Since the $\pi^*$ orbital of C=C bond show good angular dependence in carbon K-edge NEXAFS spectra, the angle $53{\pm}5^{\circ}$ determined from NEXAFS spectra. This majority structure is consistent with the [2+2] cycloaddition of selenophene to the dimer of the Si(100)-$2{\times}1$ surface.

  • The suitability of BMPI (2-bromo-N-methyl pyridinium iodide) for solid-phase peptide synthesis was investigated. The coupling rate of BMPI/HOBT procedure. BMPI/HOBT was superior to DCC/HOBT couplings using the solid-phase peptide bond formation proceeded to a greater degree of completion than DCC/HOBT method did. Double couplings with 2 equiv. of Bocamino acids and 1.5 equiv. of BMPI and $NEt_3$ and 2 equiv. of HOBT in DMF/MC (1:1 v/v) gave the best result for the preparation of a model compound. Stepwise solid phase peptide synthesis using BMPI/HOBT procedure was successfully utilized for the preparation of $(D-Ala)^2$-dynorphine A. BMPI/HOBT procedure for the synthesis of $(D-Ala)^2$-dynorphine gave better yield (20%) than DCC/HOBT procedure did.

  • Ring expansion reactions via endocyclic cleavage of cyclopropylcarbinyl radicals derived from the reaction of [1-benzyloxycarbonylbicyclo[n. 1.O]alk-(n+l)-yl] -1-imidazolethiocarboxylates with tributyltin hydride/AIBN proceeded to produce 3-cycloalkenecarboxylates in good yields. Benzyl (5'-phenoxypentyl) -3-cyclohepten-1 -carboxylate was obtained in 33% yield from the reaction of benzyl 5-methylenebicyclo [4. 1.0]- 1-carboxylates with 4-phenoxybutyl iodide under radical conditions. Selective cleavage of endocyclic bond in cyclopropane to the cyclohexane, results from stabilization of the resultant radical by the carbonyl groups, such as the benzyloxycarbonyl group, which lower the transition state energy for the final cyclopropane cleavage in the ring expansion.

  • This article deals with the synthesis and characterization of poly [N-(propargyloxy)phthalimide][poly (POPI)]. The polymerization of POPI was carried out by various transition metal catalysts. $MoCl_5$-based catalysts were found to be more effective than $WCl_6$-based catalysts. However, the polymer yield was relatively low (maximum 35%). The polymerization of POPI by $PdCl_2$ gave poly (POPI) in fair yields in DMF and pyridine. The resulting poly (POPI)s were mostly insoluble in organic solvents. The infrared spectrum of poly (POPI) showed no peak at 2135 $cm^{-1}$ due to acetylenic $C{\equiv}C$ stretching frequency. Instead, the carbon-carbon double bond stretching frequency was observed at 1600-1650 $cm^{-1}$. The TGA thermogram showed that the present poly (POPI) is thermally stable up to $160^{\circ}C.$.

  • It is essential to properly understand the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns confined by stirrups that experience different corrosion rates. The current study investigated the effect of seismic performance indicators such as strength loss, energy dissipation rate, ductility and hysteresis damping on specimens and models for different stirrup corrosion rates. Analysis revealed the adverse effects of corrosion on the bond performance between the concrete and steel bars which affected the seismic performance of the columns. It was found that with increasing corrosion rate, ductility and energy dissipation of the specimens decreased. Compared with the uncorroded specimen, the ductility factor and energy dissipation decreased observably, by 22.89% and 60.64%, respectively. An attenuation relationship is proposed for the corrosion rate of the stirrups for different stirrup yield strengths, concrete compressive strengths, concrete covers and stirrup spacing.
