A series of experiments were carried out for two successive years to investigate the productivity of forage turnip in mid-northern area of Korea. Fresh matter and dry matter yields of 6 foreign cultivars (Purple Top Strap Leaved, Purple Top White Globed, Seven Top, Shogoin, White Egg and Amber Globe) seeded either in early spring or in autumn after harvesting forage corn were evaluated with different seeding date and harvesting date as well as with different level of fertilization. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The earlier the seeding date in spring (Mar. 29, Apr. 12, Apr. 16) was, the higher was the yield of fresh matter and dry matter as the plant growth ceased after mid June, when the temperature began to rise. 2. In spite of its high DM yield, the Japanese cultivar, Shogoin, showed poor forage quality for summer feeding due to its earlier bolting in harvesting season. 3. Of the 6 cultivars Purple Top White Globed showed highest DM yield (800 kg/ 10a) in mid area including SEOUL irrespective of planting season. 4. Although the turnips showed mostly positive yield responses to fertization, the differences were not great especially above the level of$N-P_2O_5-K_2O$: 5-3-4 kg/lOa. 5. IN TAEGWALLYONG, a northern area of Korea, the average fresh matter yield of the six cultivars tested amounted to 3,500 kg/lOa when drilled on June 30 and harvested on Aug. 30, although bulb formation during the summer was relatively poor. 6. Concluded, forage turnip is regarded to be a suitable catch-crop which has the potential to maintain and increase the total forage production in mid-northern area of Korea. The intercropping is recommendable especially for autumn planting well past the time forage corn has been harvested.
Characteristics of the rootstock formation and flower bud differentiation according to sowing time for production of the high quality rootstock in Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) was investigated. The flower bud initiation was on the 17th of July after sowing in April, the 2nd of July after sowing in May, the 30th of July after sowing in June and the 1st of October after sowing in July. But they didn't differentiate after sowing in August and September. The days required from germination to flower bud initiation and accumulated temperature depended on the weather. If the outside air temperature was high, the days required were less, If the outside air temperature was low, the days required were greater, the accumulated temperature was similar to the days required in this experement, too. The rootstock sown from April to July wasn't good enough to be use because the flower bud differentiation was generated before harvestable weight. the weight of rootstock was sown in September wasn't heavy enough in weight because the outside air temperature was too low for it to grow well. The plant grows slow and steady through out winter. The rootstock sown in August was havestable 200g in 90 days after sowing before the flower bud differentiated. The best sowing time for the production of high quality rootstock of Chico in the climate of Korea is researched to be August.
Orostachys japonjcus, called Wasong in herb medicine, has been artificially cultivated as an anti-tumor medicinal. The experiment was done to examine the effect of night-break periods imposed immediately before its bolting time on its morphological, flowering-related characters and fraction dry weights. After a plant was grown in a 15cm plastic pot containing a 2:1 soil:Peat moss mixture for about 3 months, three different night-break periods (0.5, 1 and 2 hours) around midnight were treated from Aug. 24. to compare with the natural daylength. The plants were sampled 6 times by 2-week interval after the treatments. Plant height and inflorescence length of all the treatments inclined with time lapse after the treatment and were shorter in 2 hour night-break due to slow increment than in the other treatments, while stem diameter showed reverse result. All the treatments except 2 hour night -break were nearly same in fraction, shoot and total dry weights per plant; two hour night-break treatment had greater leaf and bract weight from 6 weeks, greater stem, shoot and total weights from 2 weeks and greater root weight from 4 weeks but did less floret weight after the treatment. Although florets on the inflorescence were formed in 2 hour night-break treatment, flowering florets and flowering plants never occurred. In the other treatments showed the similar response, however, more florets appeared from 2 weeks, flowering florets was sharply increased from 6 weeks and flowering plants were reached up to 100% from 6 to 8 weeks after the treatment. Inflorescence length or number of total florets per plant in 2 hour night-break was positive-correlated to all the fraction dry weights except that those of natural daylength was not done, meaning that its artificial cultivation should permit bolting to secure more shoot dry matter.
Year-round cultivation of a monocarpic plant Orostachys japonicus should be possible in case to controlling floret flowering. To give some information on its year-round cultivation, this study was carried out to examine the effect of night-break treatment time (June 10, Aug. 25) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 and heating were made under $20^{\circ}C$ Samples were taken every 4 weeks from Aug. 25. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample until March 9. Plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were greater in the earlier treatment than in the later one. Leaves and bracts, floret, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed the same response as plant height did to the night-break treatment time. Florets were more formed in the earlier treatment than in the later treatment in which they were flowered only on March 9, meaning that its year-round cultivation should be possible under night-break treatment before bolting and heating during winter season.

This study compared the growth characteristics of A. gigas according to the transplanting season, in the cultivation located in Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, transplanted in the autumn and spring. As a result of that the plant survival rate were observed the highest autumn transplanting (9.4%; autumn-92.2%, spring-82.8%) and bolting rate were observed lowest spring transplanting (7.1%; autumn-37.3%, spring-30.2%). Growth characteristics (height, leaf length and width, stem diameter) were observed the highest autumn transplanting in June and highest spring transplanting in August. The early growth is high growth due to long rooting time in autumn transplanting, but the difference in the ground growth between the two experiments was insignificant when the main growth period was from June to August. Further analysis of the growth characteristics and marker components of roots of A. gigas can be used to determine the optimal planting time and the establishment of high quality cultivation technology.
This study was carried out to investigate characteristics of new garlic cultivar 'Alkae' and to identify the effect of scape removal on bulb characteristics and growth of garlic cultivar 'Alkae' and 'Namdo'. Bolting time and harvesting time were earlier about 20 days in 'Alkae' than those in 'Namdo'. 'Alkae' was inferior to 'Namdo' in top growth as plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, SPAD value, diameter of leaf sheath, and so on. but root developing was better in 'Alkae'. Bulb weight of' Alkae' was 17% more than that of 'Namdo', harvested on proper time. The ratio of bulb weight over 40 g was almost double in 'Namdo' as 48% with 'Alkae' as 25%. Occurrence of bulb cracking was more considerable in 'Alkae' and the number of clove per bulb was 1.9 more in 'Alkae' than 'Namdo', but the ratio of bulb rot during storage was higher in 'Namdo' than 'Alkae'. In treatments of scape removal, SPAD value did not show any difference between two cultivars. Leaf dryness was earlier and harder than control and leaf area showed the same tendency as leaf dryness, and there were no significant differences among the methods of scape removal. The bulb weight and the ratio of bulb weight over 40 g at 50 days after the harvest of 'Alkae', 'Namdo' were more 10%, 12% and 27%, 44% in scape removal treatment than control. and there were no significant differences among the methods of scape removal. So, scape removal was very effective to increase large bulb production in the two garlic cultivals and the effect was higher in 'Namdo' than 'Alkae'. The ratio of bulb cracking and the occurrence of bulb rot were almost same in with the scape removal and non removal groups And also there were no significant differences among the methods of scape removal.
The Perilla frutescens var. japonica HARA is widely cultivated in Korea for vegetable leaves and oil seeds. Perilla species have been used for food and medicine and are known to contain many functional compounds. In this study, we investigated the functional compound contents of Perilla during its growth stages to analyze the optimal harvest time and conditions. The contents of the Perilla sprouts were analyzed according to culture environment and days of growth. Sprouts grown in soil under natural light conditions showed high rosmarinic acid (23.19±0.16 mg/g) and GABA (0.55±0.05 mg/g) content. Therefore, the results suggest that 6 to 8 days after sowing in soil under natural light conditions was the optimum harvest condition for sprouts. Also, the functional compounds of Perilla were analyzed according to growth stage and plant part. As a result, caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid exhibited the highest content in the stage from vegetative growth to reproductive growth (0.28±0.03 ~ 0.30±0.07 mg/g rosmarinic acid and 20.60±7.02 ~ 19.37±3.18 mg/g caffeic acid), and luteolin and GABA showed the highest content in the reproductive growth stage and in the early stages of vegetative growth, respectively (31.11±2.98 ~ 22.35±1.64 ㎍/g luteolin and 0.42±0.09 ~ 0.37±0.04 mg/g GABA). It was confirmed that the content of caffeic acid (0.34±0.03 mg/g), rosmarinic acid (55.22±9.33 mg/g) and luteolin (1,044.89±6.72 ㎍/g) was the highest during the bolting stage. Overall, we identified the timing of the highest level of functional compounds in the sprouts and mature leaves of Perilla. These results suggest a suitable harvest time and conditions for sprouts and leaves for the use of Perilla as a functional material.

This study assessed clove germination, shoot growth, photosynthesis and bulb development of southern-type garlic (Allium sativum L.) in a temperature gradient tunnel (TGT), to examine the impacts of increases in temperature on the growth of garlic and find a way to minimize them. The temperatures in the middle and outlet of the TGT were 3.2℃ and 5.8℃ higher, respectively, than the ambient temperature at the tunnel inlet. The germination of garlic cloves was late at temperatures of ambient+3℃ (in the middle of the TGT) and ambient+6℃ (at the outlet) than at ambient temperature (at the inlet). However, bolting and the timing of maximum leaf number per plant were faster at ambient+3℃ or +6℃ than at ambient temperature. Shoot growth was generally greater at ambient temperature. Bulb growth did not significantly differ according to cultivation temperatures, but fresh and dry weights were slightly higher at ambient temperature and ambient+3℃ in the late growth stage. The photosynthesis rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) were higher at ambient+3℃ than at ambient temperature. Furthermore, at ambient+3℃, the net photosynthetic rate (Amax) was high, while the dark respiration rate (Rd) was low. At ambient temperature and ambient+3℃, bulb development was healthier, resulting in better productivity and more commercial bulbs, while at ambient+6℃, the bulbs were small and secondary cloves developed, resulting in low commercial value. Therefore, at elevated temperatures caused by global warming, it is necessary to meet the low-temperature requirements before clove sowing, or to delay the sowing time, to improve germination rate and increase yield. The harvest should also be advanced to escape high-temperature stress in the bulb development stage.

A new Gomchwi cultivar 'Soomany' was derived from a cross between Gomchwi (Ligularia fischeri (Ledeb.) Turcz.) and Handaeri-gomchwi (Ligularia fischeri var. spiciformis Nakai). The investigation and selection of growth and yield characteristics were conducted from 2007 to 2015 in field and greenhouse of Highland Agriculture Research Institute, National Institute of Crop Science, Rural Development Administration, in Korea. On a newly developed cultivar 'Soomany', color of petiole ear is light green, petiole trichome is existent, trichome and light on the back of the leaves don't exist, and density of leaf vein is degree 4. Plant height, leaf length, leaf width and petiole length are 77.1, 22.3, 21.5 and 57.2 cm, respectively in the growth characteristics of the 2nd year. Plant size was also higher than that of 'Sammany' generally. Bolting date was on August 15. Flowering date was on September 19, about 9 days later than 'Sammany'. 'Soomany' and 'Sammany' had 149 and 133 leaves per plant, respectively. Total yield of 'Soomany' (1,623 g/plant) made a very good comparison with that of 'Sammany' (1,385 g/plant). 'Soomany' showed harder leaves (25.8 ㎏/㎠) than 'Sammany' (20.8 ㎏/㎠), whereas 'Soomany' had thinner leaves (0.53 mm) than 'Sammany' (0.62 mm). 'Soomany' variety has shown strong resistance to powdery mildew disease compared to 'Sammany'. In May 2019, the right of variety protection of 'Soomany' was registered as a new Gomchwi variety (Register No. 192).
