  • The wireless sensor network (WSN) based ECG and body temperature measuring system for ubiquitous health-care were designed and developed. The system was composed of a wireless sensor network node, base station and server computer for the continuous monitoring of ECG signals and body temperatures of patients at home or hospital. ECG signal and body temperature data, important vital signals which are commonly used in clinical and trauma care, were displayed on a graphical user interface (GUI). The data transfer from sensor nodes on patients' body to server computer was accomplished through a base-station connected to a server computer using Zigbee compatible IEEE802.15.4 standard wireless communication. Real-time as well as historical, ECG data of elderly persons or patients, can also be retrieved and played back to assist the diagnosis. The ubiquitous health care system presented in this study can effectively reduce social medical expenses, which will be increased greatly in the coming aging society.

  • In u-healthcare services based on wireless body sensor networks, reliable connection is very important as many types of information, including vital signals, are transmitted through the networks. The transmit power requirements are very stringent in the case of in-body networks for implant communication. Furthermore, the wireless link in an in-body environment has a high degree of path loss (e.g., the path loss exponent is around 6.2 for deep tissue). Because of such inherently bad settings of the communication nodes, a multi-hop network topology is preferred in order to meet the transmit power requirements and to increase the battery lifetime of sensor nodes. This will ensure that the live body of a patient receiving the healthcare service has a reduced level of specific absorption ratio (SAR) when exposed to long-lasting radiation. We propose an efficientmethod for delivering delay-intolerant data packets over multiple hops. We consider forward error correction (FEC) in an erasure correction mode and develop a mathematical formulation for packet-level scheduling of delay-intolerant FEC packets over multiple hops. The proposed method can be used as a simple guideline for applications to setting up a topology for a medical body sensor network of each individual patient, which is connected to a remote server for u-healthcare service applications.

  • Smartphones are fast growing in the IT market and are the most influential devices in our daily life. Smartphones are being studied for their use in body sensor networks with excellent processing power and wireless communication technology. In this paper, we propose a coordinator design that provides data collection, classification, and display using based on Android-smartphone in multiple sensor nodes. The coordinator collects data of sensor nodes that measure biological patterns using wireless communication technologies such as Bluetooth and NFC. The coordinator constructs a network using a multiple-level scheduling algorithm for efficient data collection at multiple sensor nodes. Also, to support different protocols between heterogeneous sensors, a data sheet recording wireless communication protocol information is used. The designed coordinator used Arduino to test the performance of multiple sensor node environments.

  • Recently, with the increasing of the interest in the integration of medical technology and information communication technology, researches on WBAN (Wireless Body Area Networks) that try to apply sensor network to the human body have been processed actively. The existing sensor network technology has the potential to be used in WBAN, but it has some limitations also. In particular, because the sensors are likely to communicate through each part of the body, it has a very different network environment from the sensor network that uses a free space. Therefore, researches on WBAN have a variety area of study that slightly different from the conventional sensor networks and take into account the characteristics of the body. In this study, we investigate the environmental characteristics of WBAN that are separated from the conventional sensor network, and the research trends of WBAN systematically by using the technique of SLR (Systematic Literature Review) from 2001 around when the concept of WBAN has been introduced. The investigation includes the classification of research and the researcher's features. And the survey results and the outlook for further study are summarized.

  • In this paper, we consist of three dimensional acceleration sensor as a small-sized sensor module to acquire base technologies that need to estimate exhibition audience' moving distance. and that we developed algorism and device that can calculate acceleration in gravity direction with attaching it to people's body part without regard to three dimensional direction. By making use of the sensor module, we have to process the data that let it quantitatively process possible to measure people's walk and movement by computer system. We normalized sensor output data in the process of change from sensor module to acquisition of data, rectangular coordinates and single scalar acceleration value in gravity direction. Printed out sensor data attaching sensor module to people's body part is used for motion pattern detection after normalization, Motion sensor devised mode change algorism because it print data of other pattern according to attached position of body. For algorism design, we collected data occurring during walking about subject and we also defined occurring problem domain after analyzing the data. We settle defined problem domain and that we simulated the walking number measuring instrument with highly efficient in restricted environment.

  • Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is consisted of lots of tiny sensor nodes with limited processing power and computing resources. Thus, the most critical and fundamental element of WSN technology is sensor node, which gathers environmental information and transmits it to the user application systems. Due to the technological advancement, sensor nodes are become smaller and more intelligent, hence, expand their application area. Specifically, implantable wireless sensor node technology, to monitor and treat disease by implanting tiny sensor nodes into human body or livestock, shows further directions of WSN. In this paper, we have designed an implantable wireless sensor node to monitor livestock body temperature in real time. We also discussed on the additional considerations to implement real time bio-monitoring systems.

  • Multi-Walled Carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) coupled with Silicone Rubber (SR) can represent applicable strain sensors with accessible materials, which result in good stretchability and great sensitivity. Employing these materials and given the fact that the combination of these two has been addressed in few studies, this study is trying to represent a low-cost, durable and stretchable strain sensor that can perform excellently in a high number of repeated cycles. Great stability was observed during the cyclic test after 2000 cycles. Ultrahigh sensitivity (GF>1227) along with good extensibility (ε>120%) was observed while testing the sensor at different strain rates and the various number of cycles. Further investigation is dedicated to sensor performance in the detection of human body movements. Not only the sensor performance in detecting the small strains like the vibrations on the throat was tested, but also the larger strains as observed in extension/bending of the muscle joints like knee were monitored and recorded. Bearing in mind the applicability and low-cost features, this sensor may become promising in skin-mountable devices to detect the human body motions.

  • In this study, we propose a 2500 frame per second (fps) high-speed binary complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor using a gate/body-tied (GBT) p-channel metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor-type high-speed photodetector. The GBT photodetector generates a photocurrent that is several hundred times larger than that of a conventional N+/P-substrate photodetector. By implementing an additional binary operation for the GBT photodetector with such high-sensitivity characteristics, a high-speed operation of approximately 2500 fps was confirmed through the output image. The circuit for binary operation was designed with a comparator and 1-bit memory. Therefore, the proposed binary CMOS image sensor does not require an additional analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The proposed 2500 fps high-speed operation binary CMOS image sensor was fabricated and measured using standard CMOS process.

  • A single body type of fiber-optic current and voltae sensor using a rare earth doped YIG and a bismuth silicon oxide single crystsl is proposed, which is used for simultaneous measurement of the AC electric current and AC electric voltage over the trasmission lines. Experimental results showed that the fiber-optic current sensor has the maximum 7.5% error within the current range of 0A to 400A, and the fiber-optic voltage sensor has the maximum 0.87% error within the current range of 0V to 400V. The output waveforms of proposed fiber-optic sensor system has a good agreement with output waveforms of conductor current and voltage. Experimental results proved that the output of fiber-optic current sensor is not affected by the electric voltage applied to the fiber-optic voltage sensor, and also, that the output of fiber-optic voltage sensor is not affected by the electric current applied to the fiber-optic current sensor.
