  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, appearance satisfaction, body-image, and self-esteem on interpersonal relationship ability of nursing students. Methods: The study was designed as a descriptive survey study. The subjects were 753 nursing students of three nursing colleges. Data were collected by a structured questionnaire and collected from April 1 to May 31, 2011.The collected data were analyzed by using the SPSS/WIN (ver.12.0). Results: The study showed significant differences in the score of interpersonal relationship ability according to gender, economic status and physical health status. The score of interpersonal relationship ability had significantly positive correlations with appearance satisfaction, body-image and self-esteem. Hierarchical linear regression showed physical health status, body-image and self-esteem were independently associated with interpersonal relationship ability. These three predictors accounted for 37% of the variance in interpersonal relationship ability. Conclusion: Physical health status, body-image and self-esteem were the predictors influencing interpersonal relationship ability. Therefore, these factors should be considered when developing intervention programs for interpersonal relationship ability for nursing students.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-esteem and the body cathexis on consumers' attitude in acceptance of fashion trends. The subjects were 460 women from in their 20's to 60's living in Daegu area. The scale for self-esteem and the body cathexis were used and self-report questionnaires were applied to measure the acceptance of fashion trends. The data were analysed by frequency, mean, factor analysis, ANOVA and Duncan-test using SPSS-package. The results were as follows. First, the results of analysing the factor of the response of acceptance of fashion trends identified three attitudes; 'active to fashion trends', 'passive to fashion trends' and 'unconcern to fashion trends'. Secondly, there were significant differences in the acceptance of fashion trends in accordance with an age. Thirdly, there were significant differences in the acceptance of fashion trends and clothing shopping orientation according to one's self-esteem and the body cathexis. It appeared that higher the level of self-esteem and the body cathexis predicts an 'active to fashion trend' attitude in acceptance of fashion trends.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the relationships among body image, self-esteem and sociability according to perception of body shape and obesity level. Methods: The subjects in this study were 325 elementary school youngsters in their sixth year. A survey was conducted, and one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation analysis and path analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Normal weight group accounted for 43.4%, under weight group 34.8% and obesity group 21.8%. In underweight group, 53.1% of the subjects perceived their body was normal or fatty while 17% of subjects in normal group perceived their body was fatty. There were significant differences in body image according to the perception of body shape by grade(F=15.90, p=.000) and to the level of obesity(F=6.18, p=.002). There was a significant difference in self-esteem according to the perception of body shape by grade(F=3.17, p=.430). There was a significant difference in sociability according to the level of obesity(F=3.48, p=.032). There was significantly strong positive correlation among their body image, self-esteem and sociability. A structural equation model was tested and fitted the data well. Conclusions: This study suggested that health education is needed to establish the correct body image from the elementary school periods by school health educators. The right body image is more important than anything else to improve self-esteem and sociability.

Body surveillance and body shame significantly predicted 72.3% of appearance orientation. Sociocultural attitudes toward appearance and self-esteem significantly predicted 33.5% of appearance evaluation. Self-esteem and body surveillance significantly predicted 15.9% of health orientation. Self-esteem significantly predicted 23.3% of health evaluation. • Despite the growth of body-related industry has generated considerable interest in this topic among both academics and practitioners, there has been lack of studies that explore body esteem toward online fashion products leads to purchase intentions, which self-monitoring moderates the relationship between body esteem toward online fashion products and purchase intentions. To fill this gap, this study aim to propose a research model where body esteem influences on the purchase intentions, with self-monitoring as a moderator. In order to test hypotheses, response from 172 consumers were achieved, and the proposed model was estimated by using hierarchical moderated regression analysis. The empirical results showed that body esteem negatively related to purchase intentions toward online fashion products. Additionally, this study indicated that the moderating effects of self-monitoring exist between body esteem and purchase intentions toward online fashion products, thereby implying the importance of contingent role of self-monitoring in managing online channels.
