Objectives: To compare the body composition of the postpartal female weight-gained over the recommended during pregnancy with that of normal female with same age. female diagnosed as obesity and postpartal female weight-gained within the recommended during pregnancy. Methods: From Apr. 1. 2001 to Feb. 28. 2002, there were 745 delivery in Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Kyung-Hee Medical Center. 32 mothers of them wanted to be investigated about the weight gain during their pregnancy. We excluded 12 persons who had gained within the recommended weight$(15{\beta}{\prod})$ and had diagnosed as the diseases inducing pathologic edema, preeclamsia. gestational heart or renal diseases, for example. In 2 days after delivery(nomal) or 5 days after(Caesarean section) we analysed the body composition of 20 persons. Results: 1. Compared with normal female, body weight, body mass index and body fat of the women gained over the recommended were increased and there made alternation to the increase of the percentage of body fat or the decrease of the percentage of lean body mass. 2. Compared with obese women who had same body mass index, the women gained over the recommended showed a little increase of body fluid, protein and mineral, but had a little decrease of the percentage of body fat. 3. The percentages of body fat increased with the women gained over the recommended, the women gained within the recommended and the obese women in order. This could imply the relation between the pregnancy, weight gain during pregnancy and the obesity. 4. The weights before pregnancy were same in the women gained over the recommended and the women gained within the recommended. But the weights just after delivery kept the gap happened during pregnancy between them and its main cause was the increase of body fat. Conclusions : The women gained over the recommended during pregnancy experienced the chage of body composition and its main cause was the increase of body fat. So compared with the women gained within the recommende, postpartal obesity more frequently could happen.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between bone mineral density(BMD), body composition and life styles of female college students. The subjects were 334 students with a mean age of 21.0 years. BMDs of forearm and calcaneus were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedence analysis. The means for weight, height, and body mass index(BMI) of the subjects were 55.7 kg, 161.0 cm, 21.5 kg/$m^2$, respectively. Grouping by the BMI, 13.2% of the subjects were classified as overweight, and 11.1% of the subjects as obese group. BMD in the forearm and calcaneus were 0.390 g/$cm^2$, 0.514 g/$cm^2$. In the forearm, 58.1% and 9.6% of the subjects were classified as osteopenia and osteoporosis, respectively, and in the calcaneus, 12.0% and 0.3% of the subjects were classified as osteopenia and osteoporosis, respectively. Body weight, skeletal muscle mass, lean body mass, fat mass and BMI were positively correlated with BMDs in the forearm and calcaneus($r$=0.180~0.495, $p$ <0.01~0.001), and height, % body fat and waist-hip ratio(WHR) were positively correlated with BMDs in the calcaneus($r$=0.213~0.239, $p$ <0.001), but not in the forearm. The factors such as beginning age of cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking and exercise had significant influence on BMD($p$ <0.05; p<0.001), whereas sleeping hours, activity level, frequency of exercise, meal times, frequency of snack and fried food intake, breakfast skipping and amount of meal had not significant influence on BMD. Therefore, the acquisition of balanced body composition is necessary through the increase of fat free mass and muscle mass, not through the increase of fat mass among female college students.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to determine the effects of a health promotion program on perception of health behavior, physical fitness, and body composition in child care helpers. Methods: The study had a one group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. Data were collected from 38 child care helpers from July 6 to November 9, 2013. The health promotion program consisted of health education, self-exercise, encouragement, and identification. The following data were collected perception(perceived benefit, barrier, and self-efficacy), physical fitness(balance, grasp power, and flexibility), and body composition(body mass index, body fat ratio, waist circumference, and basal metabolic rate) and analysis was performed using on SPSS WIN 18.0. Results: Self-efficacy showed a significant increased. Body mass index, body fat ratio, and waist circumference showed a significant decreased. No significant difference in perceived benefit, barrier, physical fitness, and basal metabolic rate was observed between pre-test and post-test. Conclusion: This health promotion program had an effect on self-efficacy and body composition in child care helpers. Therefore, this health promotion program for child care helpers can be recommended as an effective nursing intervention.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among body composition, dietary intake, exercise, and life style in children(M=80, f=102) of the 5th and 6th grades of elementary school. Anthropometry and multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis were conducted to estimate body composition. Dietary intake, exercise, and life style were determined by using questionnaires. When obesity was classified greater than 120% of the ideal body weight, the prevalence rates of obesity were 31.2% for boy and 20.6% for girl. There were significant differences in body composition between nonobese(NO) and obese(OB) groups. Mean fat mass(FM) and lean body mass(LBM) were 8.6kg and 27.7kg for NO group and 16.7kg and 32.3kg for OB group, respectively. Also a significant difference was found in hydration rate(TBW/body weight)between groups( <0.01). No significant difference was found I total calorie intake and nutrient intakes between groups. No difference was found in the frequency and duration of outdoor exercise and indoor activities. Mean sleeping hours was 8-9hours for 62% of nonobese children and for 59% of obese children. However, calorie intake per body weight was significantly lower inobese children than in nonobese. The present study showed that significant differences existed in their body size and composition between NO and OB groups , while no differences existed in daily calorie intake, excercise , and life style. This may indicate that important obesity-promoting factors of early onset obesity may rely on other factors such as hereditary or environmental factors besides factors considered. Further studies are required to understand obesity-promoting factors in children. (Korean J Community Nutrition 2(5) : 680∼686, 1997)
To investigate the effects of exercise-training on fat distribution several indicators of body fatness(percent body fat skinfolds thickness body circumference) were assessed in 128 healthy male subjects submitted to an 8-wk high intensive exercise-training. The subjects(average age=20.3$\pm$1.3 yrs) exercised 5 days/week. Daily energy intake and expenditure wee recorded. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) Through exercise-training lean body mass increased significantly (changes : 0.5$\pm$1.5kg; p=0.000) decreased significantly. 2) Suprailiac was the most reduced site by exercise-training among eight site skinfolds. Central skinfolds were changed more by exercise-training than peripheral skinfolds with reduction of 1.7$\pm$2.1mm and 0.4$\pm$1.8mm respectively. Central site circumferences were reduced more by exercise-training than peripheral site circumferences. 3) As a result of analyzing 12 of the fattest(top 10% of weight) and 12 of the leanest men(bot-tom 10% of weight) it indicated that there was a significant reduction of fat tissue in body composition and skinfolds thickness for the fat group. However there was no significant change for the lean groups. 4) Correlational analysis showed that predicting changes in body fat by infrared(NIR) measurement seemed to be closely associated with changes in body fat by Kim's equation and Katch's equation in young men.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the herbal medicines used for women in puerperium on postpartum care, Kami-Saenghwatang(SHT) and Kami-Bohertang(BHT) and postpartum body composition change. We also examined the influence of gestational age, the number of parity and the route of delivery for gestational weight gain and postpartum weight loss. Methods: 239 women followed by postpartum care center. Variety factor s were conformed and then checked body composition analysis. 8 weeks later, we followed up body composition of 36 women among the former checked. and additionally asked the body weight of another 42 former checked women by telephone call. Results: $Mean{\pm}S.D$(standard deviation) of pre-pregnancy weight is $55.22{\pm}8.98kg$, $Mean{\pm}S.D$ of gestational maximun weight is $69.26{\pm}9.77kg$, $Mean{\pm}S.D$ of weight loss in postpartum 8 weeks(means sub-tract postpartum 1 week weight from postpartum 8 week weight) is $57.86{\pm}8.60kg$. The number of parities had corrrelation with gestational weight gain. Age, number of parities and route of delive were not significantly correlated with postpartum weight loss during 8 weeks after delivery, and also it was not correlated with body water mass, body fat mass, body mass index and body weight on postpartum 8 weeks whether they treated with SHT and BHT. conclusion: It was not correlated with body water mass, body fat mass, body mass index and body weight on 8 weeks postpartum whether they treated with SHT and BHT.
Background: Gut microbiota is regarded as one of the major factors involved in the control of body weight. The antiobesity effects of ginseng and its main constituents have been demonstrated, but the effects on gut microbiota are still unknown. Methods: To investigate the effect of ginseng on gut microbiota, 10 obese middle-aged Korean women took Panax ginseng extracts for 8 wk and assessment of body composition parameters, metabolic biomarkers, and gut microbiota composition was performed using 16S rRNA gene-based pyrosequencing at baseline and at 8 wk. Significant changes were observed in body weight and body mass index; however, slight changes were observed in gut microbiota. We divided the participants into two groups, the effective and the ineffective weight loss groups, depending on weight loss effect, in order to determine whether the antiobesity effect was influenced by the composition of gut microbiota, and the composition of gut microbiota was compared between the two groups. Results: Prior to ginseng intake, significant differences of gut microbiota were observed between both at phyla and genera and the gut microbiota of the effective and ineffective weight loss groups was segregated on a principal coordinate analysis plot. Conclusion: Results of this study indicate that ginseng exerted a weight loss effect and slight effects on gut microbiota in all participants. In addition, its antiobesity effects differed depending on the composition of gut microbiota prior to ginseng intake.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a 12-week combined exercise training program on the body composition, physical fitness levels, and metabolic syndrome profiles of obese women. Methods: Twelve obese women were assigned to the combined exercise training program group. The women underwent training for 70-90 min/d, three times per week for a period of 12 weeks. Paired samples t-tests were performed using SPSS ver. 17.0 for analysis of the results. Results: The results of this study showed that body-composition parameters such as weight, fat-free mass, body fat mass, body-mass index, body fat, waist-hip ratio, basal metabolic rate, and intra-abdominal fat, physical fitness parameters such as muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, and cardiac endurance, and metabolic syndrome biomarkers such as triglyceride levels, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, glucose levels, systolic blood pressure, and waist circumference before participation the training program differed significantly from those after participation in the training program (p<0.05). However, diastolic blood pressure before participation in the training program did not differ significantly from that after participation in the training program (p>0.05). Conclusion: We concluded that a 12-week combined exercise training program could be a good exercise program for improvement of the body composition, physical fitness levels, and metabolic syndrome profiles of obese women.

The purpose of this study is to verify a correlation between flexi-bar exercise and improvement of trunk strength and body composition in juvenile soccer players. The subjects were 11 teenager juvenile soccer players who conducted flexi-bar exercise half an hour daily three times a week for eight weeks. They were tested for trunk muscles strength, body composition and correlation. The result showed that trunk muscles strength improved significantly(p<.01) and weight, Rt. arm muscle mass, Rt. leg muscle mass, and Lt. leg muscle mass(p<.05), Lt. arm muscle mass, trunk muscle mass, and body muscle mass(p<.01) improved significantly as well while Lt. arm fat mass, Rt. leg fat mass, and Lt. leg fat mass decreased significantly(p<.05). In the correlation analysis, the more trunk muscle mass and trunk muscles strength increased, the more muscle mass of body regions increased, which was a positive correlation whereas fat mass of body regions decreased, which was a negative correlation. It was verified that there was a correlation between flexi-bar exercise and improvement of trunk muscles strength and body composition for juvenile soccer players.
This study was done to evaluate the health and nutritional status of female college students in Seoul. The subjects were 63 healthy college students aged 20 to 29 years. Their body composition, dietary intakes, clinical blood indices were investigated. Their body composition was determined by means of a multifreqency bioelectrical impedance analysis. Their dietary intake was determined using 3-day record method and their nutrient intake was analyzed by Computer Aided Nutritional analysis program for professional (CAN-pro). Their hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were determined by semi-automated microcell counter (F-520). Their plasma total cholesterol, TG, and HDL-cholesterol levels were measured using test kits. All data were statistically analyzed by SAS PC package program. Their average consumption of calcium, iron vitamin A, vitamin B2 and niacin were 63.3%, 65.0%, 85.2%, 89.2% and 95.2% of RDA, respectively. The overall mean values of the hematological indices in the female college students were within the normal range. However anemic subjects with hemoglobin (< 12 g/dl) and hematocrit (<36%) accounted for about 20% of the subjects. The mean levels of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and TG were 188.4mg/dl, 69.9mg/dl and 67.4mg/dl, respectively. The percentages of the subjects with plasma total cholesterol level (> 200mg/dl) and LDL-cholesterol (>130mg/dl) were about 41% and 30.4%, respectively. The data showed a significantly positive correlation between either body fat (%) or BMI and TG. However. there was a significantly negative correlation between either body fat (%) or BMI and HDL-cholesterol. These overall results suggest that it is necessary for college women to be educated regarding consuming more iron and vitamin C and less fat, in order to prevent iron deficiency anemia and/or cardiovascular diseases in later life.
