Objectives : In Oriental Medicine, the improvement of constipation is very important for patients at the acute stage of cerebrovascular accident. For constipation, oral medicine has usually been used but is not available to stroke patients with dysphagia and mental disorder, and may bring about side effects on the gastrointestinal tract. In such cases, general enema has been used for assistant therapy, We needed to develop a more effective enema technique on constipation of stroke patients. Methods : Sixty-three patients were researched. We treated 29 patients with Bo-Ryu enema and 34 patients with general enema. To compare the effect of the Bo-Ryu enema group with that of the general enema group, we analyzed general characteristics, bowel movement, abdominal examination and related symptoms. Results : Sixty-three patients comprised the Bo-Ryu (n=29) and general (n=34) enema groups. Between the Bo-Ryu and general enema groups, the Bo-Ryu enema was more effective than the general enema in the number of bowel movements, total and corrected amount of stool, tonus of rectus abdominis muscle and abdominal discomfort. However, there were not significant differences in the power of abdominal muscle, digestion and physical power. Among the subgroups, Bo-Ryu enema group was most effective in the number of bowel movements, total amount of stool and tonus of rectus abdominis muscle, and Bo-Ryu enema group was best in the corrected amount of stool and abdominal discomfort. Conclusions : Bo-Ryu enema should be considered as an effective and safe treatment for patients with constipation during the acute stage of cerebrovascular accident.

A clinial observation was done on 12 cases of paralytic ileus patients, treated by Bo-Ryu Enema(保留灌腸), who were hospitalized from May 1, 1995 to October 31, 1996 at the Department of Oriented Internal Medicine II, Oriental Medicine Hospital. Taejon University. The results were as follows; 1. The ratio between male and female was 1 : 1.4. The distribution of age. 70' years or over, 60', 50' years generation were revealed in turn. 2. In classiffication of human coporeal constitution, Soeumin(少陰人) were 9 cases(75.0%), Taeumin(太陰人) 2 cases (16.7%), Soyangin(少陽人) 1 case (8.3%). 3. In distribution of disease on admission, Stroke sequela was the most number with 7 cases(58.3%), Stroke 3 cases(25.3%). Hypertensive encephalopathy and Brain tumor were 1 case, each other. 4. The effect of treated by Bo-Ryu Enema was as follows: Each of Excellent(良好) and Good(好戰) were 6 cases(50%) but. Fair(別無好戰) and Poor(惡化) were no case.

Objective: Paralytic ileus is a common complication of cerebral infarction. This study reports on the effect of Daeseunggi-tang and Daeshiho-tang on a cerebral infarction patient with paralytic ileus.Method: This patient was treated with herbal medicine (Daeshiho-tang and two applications of Bo-ryu enema), acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and moxibustion therapy for 17 days.Results: The symptoms of paralytic ileus appeared to improve after treatment.Conclusions: Traditional Korean medical treatment may be effective in paralytic ileus.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine remedies suggested in the papers of ovarian cyst in Chinese Medicine Journals and to establish the further direction. Methods: The papers published between 1994 and 2009 in China Academic Journal were reviewed. Results: 1. It was on Bo-Ryu Enema that main focus of investigation was placed. A variety of randomized controlled trials and case series were found. As a result, a lot of proper manual arts and prescriptions were provided out of them. 2. Acupuncture is reported as significant in reducing the size of ovarian cyst and improving clinical symptoms, which covers electrical acupuncture, enlongated needle and moxibustion, burning acupuncture. 3. External application was verified as an effective therapy for the case of a combined treatment with oral medicine. 4. Modern medical equipments such as ultra short wave medical cure, TDP could improve the efficiency of traditional remedies like Bo-Ryu Enema, external application. Conclusion: It would be necessary to practically come up with a diversity of remedies besides oral decoction of medical ingredients, and establish standard of evidence of them.
