Preparation, Characterization and Photoluminescence Properties of Ca1-xSrxS:Eu Red-emitting Phosphors for a White LED

  • A series of Ca1-xSrxS:Eu (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) phosphors were synthesized by solid-state reactions. The Ca1-xSrxS:Eu phosphors have a strong absorption at 455 nm, which corresponds to the emission wavelength of a blue LED. The emission peak of Ca1-xSrxS:Eu is blue shifted from 655 to 618 nm with increasing Sr content. The characteristics of Ca1-xSrxS:Eu phosphors make them suitable for use as wavelengthtunable red-emitting phosphors for three-band white LEDs pumped by a blue LED. In support of this, we fabricated a three-band white LED by coating SrGa2S4:Eu and Ca0.6Sr0.4S:Eu phosphors onto a blue LED chip, and characterized its optical properties.

Inclusion of Silicon Delta-doped Two-dimensional Electron Gas Layer on Multi-quantum Well Nano-structures of Blue Light Emitting Diodes

  • The influence of heavily Si impurity doping in the GaN barrier of InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well structures of blue light emitting diodes were investigated by growing samples in metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The delta-doped sample was compared to the sample with the undoped barrier. The delta-doped sample shows the tunneling behavior and forms the energy level of 0.32 eV for tunneling and the photoemission of the 450-nm band. The photo-luminescence shows the blue-shifted broad band of the radiative transition due to the inclusion of Si delta-doped layer indicating that the delta doping effect acts to form the higher energy level than that of quantum well. The dislocation may provide the carrier tunneling channel and plays as a source of acceptor. During the tunneling of hot carrier, there was no light emission.

Phycobilisome composition in Chondrus crispus (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) from a wild type strain and its vegetatively derived green mutant

  • Intact phycobilisomes from a wild-type red Chondrus crispus and its vegetatively derived green mutant were isolated by centrifugation through a discontinuous sucrose density gradient. Pigment composition was subsequently characterized by spectrophotometry. Vegetative thalli of the two strains grown together for six months in the laboratory resulted in different pigment profiles. Two pigmented phycobilisome bands appeared in the sucrose gradient of the wild-type alga, a purple coloured one, and a pink one, whereas only a single blue band appeared in the gradient of the green mutant. Spectrophotometric and fluorescence analyses identified the phycobiliprotein composition of the purple band as the typical phycoerythrin-phycocyanin-allophycocyanin complement in the wild-type, but there was no detectable phycoerythrin present in the blue band of the green mutant. Sodium dodecyl sulphate, preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis confirmed the presence of allophycocyanin subunits in all extracts, but firm evidence of an R-phycoerythrin linker polypeptide in the blue band was missing. These results highlight the ability of C. crispus to adapt to a phycoerythrin deficiency by adjusting light harvesting pigment ratios.

Recent Progress in Blue Perovskite LEDs

  • Halide perovskites are emerging materials for next-generation display applications, thanks to their narrow emission linewidth and band gap tunability, capable of covering the entire range of visible light. Despite their short period of research, perovskite light emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have shown rapid progress in device external quantum efficiency (EQE) in the near-infrared (NIR), red, and green emission wavelengths, and the record EQE has exceeded over 20 %. However there has been limited progress with blue emission compared to the red and green counterparts. In this review, the current status and challenges of blue PeLEDs are introduced, and strategies to produce spectrally stable blue PeLEDs are discussed. The strategies include 1) a mixed halide system in the form of 3-dimensional (3D) perovskites, 2) colloidal perovskite nanocrystals and 3) low dimensional perovskites, known as quasi-2D perovskites. In the mixed halide system, previous reports based on the compositional engineering of 3D perovskites to reduce spectral instability (i.e., halide segregation) will be discussed. Since spectral instability issue originate from the mixed halide composition in perovskites, the two other strategies are based on enlarging the band gap with a single halide composition. Finally, the prospects for each strategy are discussed, for further improvement in spectrally stable blue PeLEDs.

Optical Properties of White Light Sources Using Red, Green, Blue Emitting Phosphors and Violet Light Emitting Diodes (적색, 녹색, 청색 발광 형광체와 보라색 발광 다이오드를 이용한 백색 광원의 광 특성)

  • Various colors of light emitting diodes(LED) and four-band white light sources are obtained using a violet LED and various phosphor films. $BaMg_2Al_{16}O_{27}:Eu\;(blue),\;SrGa_2S_4:Eu\;(green),\;and\;Eu(TTA)_3(PTA)$ (red) phosphors are dispersed in poly-vinyl-alcohol aqueous solutions, and phosphor films are prepared by coating the suspensions to PET film. The narrow band emission of $Eu(TTA)_3(PTA)$ phosphor has excellent red luminescent property for four-band white light excited by the violet LED.

Molecular Design of Novel Conjugated Polymers for Blue-Light-Emitting Devices

  • A quantum-chemical study of conformations and electronic structures of polyheterocyclic derivatives with vinylenediheteroatom substituents at the 3- and 4-positions was performed to search for novel blue-lightemitting conjugated polymers. Conformational potential energy curves of the polymers were constructed as a function of the helical angle (a) through semiempirical Hartree-Fock band calculations at the Austin model 1 level. It is found that poly(3,4-vinylenedioxythiophene) possesses a quite flat curve in the range of α = 51.4°- 120°. Replacing S atoms for O atoms greatly increases repulsion between the neighboring units, and thereby the units become perpendicular to one another. Because of the hydrogen bonding between O and NH, poly(3,4- vinylenedioxypyrrole) is predicted to be anti-coplanar and poly(3,4-vinylenediaminofuran) to be nearly anticoplanar. According to the modified extended Huckel band calculations, the HOMO-LUMO gaps (HLGs) of the polymers, unless the polymer chains are twisted, are close to or slightly smaller than those of their respective mother polymers. Among the polymers, poly(3,4-vinylenedioxythiophene) is presumed to be the most probable candidate for a blue-light emitter because its HLG is within the range of the electronic requirement for blue-light emitters.

To Evaluate the Accuracy of DEMs Derived from the Various Spectral Bands of Color Aerial Photos (컬러항공사진의 밴드별 수치표고모형 정확도 평가)

  • In this study, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) were constructed from color images, grayscale images and each bands (Red, Green, Blue) of color image, and the accuracies of each DEMs were evaluated, And then, correlation coefficients between left and right images of each stereopairs were analyzed. The DEM can be constructed conventionally from the digital map and stereopair images using image matching. The image matching requires stereo satellite images or aerial photographs. In case of rotor aerial photographs, these are to be scanned in 3 bands (Red, Green, Blue). For this study, 5 types of images were acquired; color, grayscale, RED band, GREEN band, and BLUE band image. DEMs were constructed from 5 types of stereopair images and evaluated using elevation points of digital maps. In order to analyze the cause of various accuracies of each DEMs, the similarity between left and right images of each stereopairs were analyzed. Consequently, the accuracy of the DEM constructed from RED band images of color aerial photograph were proved best.

  • Metachromatic properties of admixture of thionine and methylene blue(MB) in aqueous solution and phospholipid bilayer membrane have been studied by absorption spectroscopy. When thionine and MB were mixed, new coaggregate has been formed because of MB was redistributed to thionine aggregate. In phosphlipid bilayer membrane system, the highly concentrated thionine was easily formed the coaggregation with MB moiety independent of MB concentration, and absorption band of admixture were more transferred to short wavelength than aqueous system. In monomeric thionine concentration, the coaggregation band was observed at the middle wavelength between the site of monomeric thionine and the site of dimeric MB in the presence of lipid bilayer membrane.

Light-Emitting Properties of Organic Electroluminescent Devices using Zinc Complexes (아연 착체를 이용한 유기 EL 소자의 전계발광 특성)

  • Zinc complexes with bis[2-(o-hydroxyphenyl) naphtol [1,2] oxazolato ligands (ZnPBO-4) and its derivatives (ZnPBO-S) were synthesized, and luminescent properties of these materials were investigated. Both the fluorescent emission band and electroluminescent emission band were discussed based on their ligand structure differences. The emission band found that it strongly depends on the molecular structure of introduced ligand. It was tuned from 446 nm to 491 nm by changing the ligand structures. Spreading of the ${\pi}$-conjugation in 2-(o-hydroxyphenyl) group gives rise to a blue shift. The EL properties also showed good consistency with their differences of ligand structure. Bright-blue EL emission with a maximum luminance of 3,100 $cd/m^2$ at 12V, current density, 575 $mA/m^2$ was obtained from the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using ZnPBO-4 as emitting layer. It was also found that the newly synthesized materials were suitable to be used as emitting materials in organic EL device.

Variation in IR and Raman Spectra of CD3CN upon Solvation of InCl3 in CD3CN: Distinctive Blue Shifts, Coordination Number, Donor-Acceptor Interaction, and Solvated Species

  • Notable blue shifts of the ν2 $C{\equiv}N$ stretching, $_{v4}$ C-C stretching and $_{v8}$ CCN deformation bands of $CD_3CN$ are observed upon solvation of $InCl_3$, resulting from the donor-acceptor interaction. The Raman spectrum in the $_{v2}$ region shows further details; at least two new bands emerge on the blue side of the $_{v2}$ band of free $CD_3CN$, whose relative intensities vary with concentration, suggesting that there exist at least two different cationic species in the solution. The strong hydrogen bonds formed between the methyl group and ${InCl_4}^-$ result in a large band appearing on the red side of the ν1 $CD_3$ symmetric stretching band. The solvation number of $InCl_3$, determined from the Raman intensities of the $C{\equiv}N$ stretching bands for free and coordinated $CD_3CN$, increases from $\sim$1.5 to $\sim$1.8 with decreasing concentration.
