Plasma Hormones, Blood Metabolites, Milk Yield and Composition in Early Lactation of Buffaloes Treated with Bromocryptine

  • The study was conducted on six multiparous Murrah buffaloes which were earlier artificially induced into lactation. During the experimental period of 15 days, buffaloes were managed in a loose housing system. All the buffaloes were administered a single injection of bromocryptine (@ $100{\mu}g/kg$ body weight) subcutaneously in the neck region at 08:30 A.M., 50 days postpartum (early lactation). Blood samples were collected from four buffaloes for a period of 5 days before the administration of bromocryptine i.e. on days -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, on day of treatment (day 0) and thereafter daily for a period of 9 days i.e 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 to determine the hormones and blood metabolites. Homogeneous milk samples from all the buffaloes were collected at morning and evening milkings on days coinciding with the days of blood sampling for analysis of milk constituents. Administration of bromocryptine resulted in a significant inhibition of plasma prolactin within 24 hrs of treatment, but the response in all the buffaloes was not uniform. The effect of bromocryptine on plasma prolactin hormone lasted for 1-4 days but Cortisol concentration were not altered. Administration of bromocryptine neither affected blood glucose nor plasma non-esterified fatty acids concentration. Irrespective of level of milk production from different buffaloes, there was no effect of bromocryptine on milk yield which indicated that prolactin is not required for milk secretion during early lactation in buffaloes. Milk constituents like fat, protein and lactose were not affected by bromocryptine may be due to no effect of bromocryptine of milk yield.

Effects of Se Pye San Water Extract on the Plasma Cortisol Concentration, Arterial Blood $PCO_2$ and $PO_2$ in the Rabbit (세폐산(洗肺散) 전탕액(煎湯液)이 가토(家兎).혈장(血漿) Cortisol 농도(濃度) 및 동맥혈(動脈血) $PCO_2,\;PO_2$에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • After intravenous administration of Se Pye San water extract in the rabbit, the change of plasma cortisol concentration, arterial blood $PCO_2$ and $PO_2$ was obtained such results as follows. 1. The plasma cortisol concentration in the control group was constant, but after intravenous administration of Se Pye San water extract at the dose of 0.2 ml/kg, the above concentration was increased significantly from 2 to 3 hours. Also, the above concentration was increased remarkably at the dose of 0.4 ml/kg from 1 to 4 hours. 2. After intravenous administration of Se Pye San water extract at each dose of 0.2 ml/kg and 0.4 ml/kg, arterial blood $PCO_2$ was decreased remarkably from 1 to 4 hours. 3. No change after intravenous administration of Se Pye San water extract at the dose of 0.2 ml/kg, while arterial blood $PO_2$ was decreased significantly at the dose of 0.4 ml/kg on 3 hours. As a results of the above, the therapeutic action of Se Pye San water extract effected with Jisu (止嗽), Jeong Cheon (定喘), Geo Dam, Cheong Yeol (淸熱) would be related with the increased both plasma cortisol concentration and arterial blood $PO_2$, and the decrease of arterial blood $PCO_2$.

Effects of Soyoligosaccharides on Blood glucose and Lipid Metabolism in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats (대두올리고당이 당뇨 유발 흰쥐의 혈당 및 지질대상에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of soyligosaccharides on improvement of diabetes mellitus. Sprague Dawley rats were divided into three groups. Control and one experimental group were fel AIN-93G diet(mixed diet) and the other experimental group was fed a similar diet containing 5% soyligosaccharides(oligosaccharide diet) for 6 weeks. Experimental groups were divided into two sub-groups after streptozotocin(STZ) injection and fed th mixed diet or the oligosaccharide diet for the next 2 weeks. Followings are final experimental and control groups: MM (mixed dietlongrightarrowSTZ injectionlongrightarrowmixed diet). MO(mixed dietlongrightarrowSTZ injectionlongrightarrowoligosaccharide diet), OM( oligosaccharide dietlongrightarrowSTZ injectionlongrightarrowmixed diet), OO(oligosaccharide dietlongrightarrowSTZ injectionlongrightarrowoligosaccharide diet), C(mixed dietlongrightarrowplacebo injectionlongrightarrowmixed diet). Blood glucose was analyzed at d1, d8 and d12 after streptozotocin injection. At the end of the experimental period, fecal bifidobacteria, plasma insulin, total lipid, triglyceride, cholesterol, and leptin concentrations was analyzed, After STZ injection, blood glucose level was significantly elevated in experimental group compared to a control group. Elevated blood glucose level declined faster in OO group compared to the other experimental groups. Meanwhile, insulin concentration decreased in all experimental groups compared to a control group. The number of bifidobacteria was significantly increased in oligosaccharide diet groups after STZ injection (MO and OO) than a mixed diet group(MM). Plasma cholesterol concentration significantly decreased in oligosaccharide diet groups(MO and OO) compared to mixed diet groups (MM and OM) after SZ injection. Plasma triglyceride and liver cholesterol concentrations significantly decreased in MO group compared to other experimental groups. Meanwhile, plasma leptin concentration was significantly lower in oligosaccharide diet groups after STZ injection(MO and OO) compared to a control group. The results in this study suggest that the dietary soyoligosaccharides has strong on reduction of reduction of blood glucose and lipid concentrations in streptozotoicin-induced diabetic rats. Thus, the use of soyoligosaccharides at a diet for IDDM patients may help to improve diabetes mellitus symptoms.(Korean J Nutrition 34(1) : 3-13, 2001)

Egg Cholesterol : Effects on Health and Perspective (계란의 Cholesterol : 문제점과 대책)

  • Egg cholesterol has been a hot issue in respect of it's effect on health and diseases in human. There is a general recognition that the cholesterol from eggs is similar to that from the other dietary sources in its biochemical functions. Many evidences show that egg yolk increased plasma cholesterol levels at an average rate of 2.3 mg /100 rnL plasma for every 100 mg cholesterol consumed. The elevation of plasma cholesterol could, however, be altered by various dietary factors such as ratios of polyunsaturated fatty acids and saturated fatty acids. Blood cholesterol levels of Korean adults have been raised up to, on the average, 193 and 187 mg /100 mL plasma for men and women, respectively, from 167/5 mg /100 mL in 1980. Furthermore, proportion of hypercholesterolemics(> 210 mg /dL) has been increased up to 23% of the population. These changes in blood cholesterol levels are attributed to the changes of dietary patterns, suggesting the arguement that Koreans are insensitive to changes of blood cholesterol is not right. Egg cholesterol levels have never been successfully reduced to any significant levels even with tremendous amounts of efforts made during last decades. The alternative and the best way to control blood cholesterol level originating from egg consumption appeares to enrich egg fat with omega-3 series fatty acids. Ingestion of the fatty acid group has specific functions to reduce hypertension and prevent various types of cancer as well as to reduce blood cholesterol. Another way to reduce egg cholesterol directly is to produce smaller egg yolk without reducing whole egg size since cholesterol is located only in the yolk. It is important to keep faith with consumers by providing correct informations on eggs, meanwhile efforts need to focus on to improve the quality of eggs as one of the best protein food items.

Effects of Binding Materials on Sensory and Cooking Properties of Soondae (결착제에 따른 순대의 제조 및 조리 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The standard cooking method of Soondae, a famous traditional sausage type food in Korea, was proposed and the applicability of porcine plasma and egg white as the substitute of the porcine blood was investigated for the improvement of off-flavor, rancidity, and acceptability of Soondae. Sensory evaluation suggested Soondae prepared with 15% porcine blood most preferred. The cooking yields, water absorption capacity and hardness of plasma and egg white added Soondae were decreased compared with those of original porcine blood Soondae. The overall results of sensory evaluation suggested the possibility of using porcine plasma or egg white as a substitute for the porcine blood in Soondae.

Effect of Guar gum levels in Backsulgies on Plasma Glucose and Insulin in Healthly Men (백설기에 첨가된 Guar gum 수준이 혈장 포도당과 인슐린에 미치는 영향)

  • Backsulgies containing various levels of guar gum(0g, 2.5g or 5g) were ingested by ten healthy male subjects after 12-h fast. Guar backsulgies was given a time in a week a time in a week for 3 weeks with 75g glucose. The Sensory qualities of backsulgies containing guar gum powder of different levels(0g, 2.5, 5g) were also evaluated using a hedonic scoring technique. On each test day 4ml samples of venous blood were taken from the fasted subjects. Further 4ml post-prandial blood samples were taken from the subjects 30, 60, 90 and 120min after guar backsulgies had commenced. Result were as follows: Plasma glucose and insulin levels were not sifnificantly reduced according to guar gum levels in backsulgies. But plasma glucose and insulin levels of the case which ingested 5g guar backsulgies tended to be lower than those of the case which ingested 0g or 2.5g guar backsulgies. Therefore it is recommended that 5g guar backsulgies is most effective snack of diabetics. KEY WORDS: guar backsulgies plasma glucose, plasma insulin, snack.

The Effect of Regular Exercise on the Level of Blood Lactate and LDH Production in College Women (운동습관이 혈액중 젖산농도 및 LDH 생성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the level of blood glucose and lactate and also plasma LDH production of college women in relation to exercise. College female student which majored athletics (E, exercise group, n=43) were recruited and compared with college women (Control group, n=60). Anthropometric measurements, triceps skinfold thickness were measured of two groups. And body fat mass and waist and hip circumferences were measured and the concentrations of plasma glucose, lactic acid and lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH) were also assayed. Average height and weight of E group were slightly higher than that of control group. but there is no difference in body mass index (BMI) and waist hip ratio (WHR) between two groups. The percentage of body fat and body fat mass(kg) in E group was slightly lower than that of control group. Plasma glucose and LDH levels of E group were higher than those of control group, and plasma lactic acid concentration was significantly increased.

Elevation Factors of Fibrinogen in the Elderly Koreans

  • Plasma fibrinogen is risk factor of vascular disease including stroke, ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Many studies have confirmed that high plasma fibrinogen levels are related with age, obesity, cholesterol, alcohol consumption, and genotype. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of fibrinogen genotype and other characteristics on the plasma fibrinogen levels in the elderly Koreans. For this study the blood samples were collected from 178 healthy elderly Koreans (102 males and 76 females, $55{\sim}80$ year olds). The blood samples were analyzed by smoking status, cholesterol levels, genotype, age, exercise, drinking, and gender. The plasma fibrinogen was assayed by clotting method, cholesterol being assayed by cholesterol oxidase method. The $\beta$-fibrinogen genotype was detected by PCR of relevant region and digestion with Alu I. The alleres with the restriction site and the non cleavable alleres were designated $A_1$ and $A_2$. In conclusion, genotype $A_1A_2$ and exercise are increased and associated with plasma fibrinogen levels. But, there were no significant differences by smoking, gender, age, drinking and cholesterol.

Effect of Increasing Dietary Fat on Plasma Lipoprotein in Young Korean Women (지방 섭취 증가가 일부 젊은 여성의 혈장 지단백 조성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of increasing dietary fat on plasma lipoprotein in young Korean women. During the three weeks of experimental periods, 8 healthy college women consumed a regular diet, a medium fat diet and a high fat diet for one week, consecutively. The percentages of fat from energy intake in the subjects on the regular, medium, and high fat diets were 20, 29 and 38%, respectively. Our data showed that the dietary intakes of fat and cholesterol had an influence on the plasma lipoprotein. The medium fat diet enhanced the blood glucose concentration and the plasma HDL, and the high fat diet resulted in increases in the blood glucose concentration and the plasma LDL as well as HDL. Also the type of diets led to changes in the composition of lipoprotein. When on the medium fat diet, HDL and LDL had higher phospholipid content. On the high fat diet, LDL had higher phospholipid, cholesterol and triglyceride contents, and HDL included higher cholesterol content.

  • This study was investigated to clarify the effect of Sin Bee Tang (神秘湯) on the renal function, arterial blood pressure and plasma cortisol. The results obtained were follows; 1. Urine volume and glomerular filtration rate were decreased significantly after Sin Bee Tang water extract, 0.1ml/kg, administration. 2. Glomerular filtration rate, renal plasma flow and urinary excretion of electrolytes were increased significantly after Sin Bee Tang water extract, 0.25ml/kg, administration. 3. Plasma cortisol concentration increased significantly after Sin Bee Tang water extract, 0.25ml/kg, administration. These results suggest that the therapeutic action of Sin Bee Tang for 'Su Chun (水喘)' has a relation with the increase of plasma cortisol and renal hemodynamic effect.
