The physiological systems have nonlinear complex phenomena. Expecially, the flow of capillary blood vessel has a nonlinear dynamic system. Thus, this study analyzes nonlinear characteristics of the flow of capillary blood vessel in physiological systems using chaotic tools(phase space reconstruction, correlation dimension, largest lyapunov exponent). Experimental data have been acquired from examining 10 rabbits. The results of chaotic analysis showed a decreasing largest lyapunov exponent and correlation dimension according to increasement glocose index. And we also know the chaotic behavior.

Malignant tumor have hypoxic cell fraction, which makes radio-resistant and hypoxia in tumor is a result from the blood flow decrease caused by increase in blood flow resistance. Blood viscosity increase is major factor of increased blood flow resistance and it could be attributed to the decrease in blood deformability index. For the evaluation of the change of blood viscosity and blood deformability in oral squamous cell carcinoma, we perform the test of the change of those factors between the normal control group and oral squamous cell carcinoma cell patient group. Relative viscosity measured against distilled water was $5.25{\pm}0.14$ for normal control group, and $5.78{\pm}0.26$ for the SCC patient group and there was statistical significance between the groups. However, there was no significant difference between the groups in blood viscosity between the groups by tumor size (T1+T2 vs T3+T4). Also, there was no significant difference between the normal control group and SCC patient group in blood deformability index and between the groups by tumor size (T1+T2 vs T3+T4). Increase in blood viscosity was confirmed with this study and it can be postulated that modification blood viscosity might contribute to decrease of hypoxia fraction in oral squamous cell carcinoma, thus improve the effect of radiotherapy and it can be assumed that the main factor of blood viscosity increase is not decrease of blood deformability in oral squamous cell carcinoma.
Cerebral vasoreactivity is an index of autoregulation of cerebral perfusion, and can be measured using functional images such as Xe CT, SPECT and PET in reponse to hypercapneic stimulus. In order to measure cerebral $CO_2$ vasoreactivity in routine TCD study conveniently and reliably, we devised a method of rebreathing into closed volume of reservoir bag as a hypercapneic stimulus, and applied it to 44 healthy volunteers. As a hypercapneic stimulus, we applied fitting mask connected with closed reservoir bag for about 90 seconds, and mean blood flow velocity(MBFV) and pulsatility index(PI) were evaluated at proximal middle cerebral arteries(MCA) of 50-55 mm depth, before and after the hypercapneic stimulus. Age affected the MFV and PI value showed significant and the MFV was 56.45(SD=9.75)cm/sec, while PI was 0.406(SD=0.089). As age increases the flow velocity decreased significantly whereas PI value increased(P<0.05). The vasoreactvity significantly decreased with age(P<0.05). The decrease of cerebral blood flow quantity and cerebral blood flow velocity is not only because of increase of diameter of cerebrovascular resulting from aging, but the resistance increase of small blood vessel resulting from the increase of PI & RI value is regarded. We suppose that the rebreathing method is a reliable and convenient technique as a hypercapneic stimulus in determining cerebral $CO_2$ vasoreactivity. The rebreathing method could be non-invasive and useful methods in estimation of the cerebrovascular reactivity and could be applied to the basal and follow-up evaluation of the cerebrovascular reserve of the ischemic stroke patients.
Objective : This study was performed to evaluate the effect acupuncture on cerebral blood flow by Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography(TCD). Methods : Monitoring of TCD was examined in stroke patients before and after acupuncture on seven points of CVA. Mean Velocity, pulsatility index, systolic velocity, diastolic velocity values are analyzed from TCD at middle cerebral artery. Results : The results showed a insignificant(p>0.05: Paired T-test) decrease in mean velocity, pulsatility index, systolic velocity, diastolic velocity, which was measured at normal middle cerebral artery. The results showed a significant($p{\leq}0.05$: Paired T-test) decrease in mean velocity, pulsatility index, systolic velocity, which was measured at injuried middle cerebral artery, except diastolic velocity. Conclusion : These results suggest that acupuncture could have a specific effect on injuried cerebral artery.
This article describes the numerical investigation of blood flow in the stenosed artery bifurcation with acceleration of the human body. Using the commercial software FLUENT, three-dimensional analyses were performed for six simulation cases with different body accelerations and bifurcation angles. The blood flow was considered to be pulsation flow, and the blood was considered to be a non-Newtonian fluid based on the Carreau viscosity model. In order to consider periodic body acceleration, a modified, time-dependent, gravitational-force term was used in the momentum equation. As a result, flow variables, such as flow rate and wall shear stress, increase with body acceleration and decrease with bifurcation angle. High values of body acceleration generate back flow during the diastolic period, which increases flow fluctuation and the oscillatory shear index at the stenosis.
Objectives: Moxibustion has been used for various post-stroke symptoms and has also been known to have effect on peripheral blood flow. This study investigated the effect of moxibustion on radial artery blood flow by Doppler ultrasound and on heart rate variability in post-stroke hemiplegia patients. Methods: Moxibustion was applied on the points of LI4, TE3, TE5 and LI11 on the affected side, and blood flow of the radial artery was measured using the Minimax-Doppler-K device. Blood flow velocity and pulsation index were analyzed before, during, and after moxibustion. Simultaneously LF, HF, and LF/HF as variables for HRV were measured by FM-150. Results: The mean value of blood flow velocity in all patients (n=23) showed significant increase between before and after moxibustion, but there was no significant difference in pulsation index and LF, HF, LF/HF ratio between before and after moxibustion. In Yin (n=9) and Yang (n=14) groups, both showed significant increase of blood flow velocity between before and after moxibustion, but there was no significant difference in pulsation index and LF, HF, LF/HF ratio between before and after moxibustion. In Deficiency (n=14) and Fullness (n=9) groups, only the Deficiency group showed significant increase of blood flow velocity between before and after moxibustion, while the Fullness group showed no significant difference in blood flow velocity between before and after moxibustion, and also there was no significant difference in pulsation index and LF, HF, LF/HF ratio between before and after moxibustion. Conclusions: This study suggests that moxibustion on LI4, TE3, TE5 and LI11 on the affected side of stroke patients increase the peripheral blood flow in the affected arm, which was most remarkable in those with Yin and Deficiency pattern.
A slit-flow apparatus with laser diffraction method has been developed with significant advances in ektacytometry design, operation and data analysis. In the slit-flow ektacytometry (or laser-diffractometry), the deformation of red blood cells subjected to continuously decreasing shear stress in slit flow is measured. A laser beam traverses a diluted blood suspension flowing through a slit and is diffracted by RBCs in the volume. The diffraction patterns are captured by a CCD-video camera, linked to a frame grabber integrated with a computer, while the differential pressure variation is measured by a pressure transducer. Both measurements of laser-diffraction image and pressure with respect to time enable to determine deformation index and the shear stress. The range of shear stress of 0 ${\sim}$ 35 Pa and measuring time is less than 2 min. When deforming under decreasing shear stress, RBCs change gradually from the prolate ellipsoid towards a circular biconcave morphology. The Deformation Index (DI) as a measure of RBC deformability is determined from an isointensity curve in the diffraction pattern using an ellipse-fitting program. The advantages of this design are simplicity, i.e., ease of operation and no moving parts, low cost, short operating time, and the disposable kit which is contacted with blood sample.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review the simulator for cardiovascular system. Methods & Results: Simulators were classified according to the structure and function of cardiovascular system. Heart and blood vessel were selected as the represent of structure. Blood pressure and blood flow were chose as the functional index. With the view points of four keywords, four kinds of simulators were selected: artificial heart, pressure simulator, flow simulator, and pulse simulator. Conclusions: This paper discussed the state of the art of research and development of the selected four kinds of simulators.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between the blood flow and autonomic nervous system which regulates the circulation system. After the oral glucose tolerance test(GTT) the velocity changes of the blood flow were measured from the normal, hyperglycemia and diabetic neuropathy using the laser doppler. The FFT analyses showed that the spectrums were concentrated around the particular bands(0.02-0.166Hz, 0.8-1.1Hz) for the normal, while almost uniform distribution of the spectrums was observed for the abnormal. The blood glucose affects the compliance of the blood vessels and viscosity and finally causes the resistance problem in the blood vessels. An index PG was introduced, which was determined by the ratio of the change or the integral power spectrum in the range between 0.02 and 0.166Hz to change of the blood glucose before and after GTT. The index shows 1.0. 0.3 and 0.1 for the normal, hyperglycemia and diabetic neuropathy, respectively. As a conclusion, this spectrum analysis shows the potential of checking the progress or the diabetic, also car be used to evaluate the vasomotion which are regulated by the autonomic nervous system.

Background: Extracorporeal circulation (ECC) can induce alterations in blood viscoelasticity and cause red blood cell (RBC) aggregation. In this study, the authors evaluated the effects of pump flow pulsatility on blood viscoelasticity and RBC aggregation. Methods: Mongrel dogs were randomly assigned to two groups: a nonpulsatile pump group (n=6) or a pulsatile pump group (n=6). After ECC was started at a pump flow rate of 80 mL/kg/min, cardiac fibrillation was induced. Blood sampling was performed before and at 1, 2, and 3 hours after ECC commencement. To eliminate bias induced by hematocrit and plasma, all blood samples were adjusted to a hematocrit of 45% using baseline plasma. Blood viscoelasticity, plasma viscosity, hematocrit, arterial blood gas analysis, central venous $O_2$ saturation, and lactate were measured. Results: The blood viscosity and aggregation index decreased abruptly 1 hour after ECC and then remained low during ECC in both groups, but blood elasticity did not change during ECC. Blood viscosity, blood elasticity, plasma viscosity, and the aggregation index were not significantly different in the groups at any time. Hematocrit decreased abruptly 1 hour after ECC in both groups due to dilution by the priming solution used. Conclusion: After ECC, blood viscoelasticity and RBC aggregation were not different in the pulsatile and nonpulsatile groups in the adult dog model. Furthermore, pulsatile flow did not have a more harmful effect on blood viscoelasticity or RBC aggregation than nonpulsatile flow.
