This study was conducted to investigate the effects of mugwort extracts on the blood ethanol concentration and liver function in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were used, the rats administered with 25% ethanol (5g/kg$.$B.W.) were devided into three groups (CON-E ; 25% ethanol administered to the CON-E) according to the administered ethanol concentration and the levels of administered mugwonts. Mugwont roots extracts were administered via the caudal vein. Ethanol concentration was measured at the time of 0, 1, 2 and 3hr by gas chromatography. GOT(Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase) and GPT(Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase) were measured at the time of 0 and 5hr. Components of each extracts were analyzed by using high performance liquid chromatography. Cell number, GOT and GPT were investigated by using rat hepatocyte culture. Megwort extracts were added at the levels of 1% or 2%. Hepatocyte culture were into five groups according to the addition levels. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Catechin contents of 8∼10mg/100g and the contents of (-)-epigallocatechin was high in the water extracts. 2. Ethanol degradation efficiency declines in the following order : MDW-E>MOH-E>CON-E. 3. The numbers of rat hepatocytes declines in the following order : 2% MDW-L>1%MDW-L>1%MOH-L>CON-L>2%MOH-L. These results suggest that crude catechin of mugwort extracts may play important roles to degrade ethanol and recover liver function in rats.

As the viscosity of the blood increases, the blood becomes more sticky and difficult to flow, so the possibility of thrombosis increases and the probability of ischemic cerebral infarction increases. The importance of measuring blood viscosity has recently been emphasized for the prevention of circulatory system diseases, and the need for a viscometer capable of easily and accurately measuring blood viscosity has emerged. In this study, the measured values of a viscosity standard solution and an artificial blood by a parallel-plate viscometer ARS-Medi were compared with the those by Ares-G2 of TA instrument, which is internationally recognized for its accuracy and reliability. The viscosity of N44 standard solution, which is a Newtonian solution, was almost perfectly matched between the two instruments at all shear rates. In the case of an artificial blood, which is a non-Newtonian solution, the measured values between the two instruments showed a difference of about 10% at the lowest shear rate 1 rad/s; however, at a clinically significant shear rate of 10 rad/s or higher, the measured values between them were consistent within the error range. We expect that ARS-Medi, a newly developed parallel-plate viscometer for blood, using disposable plates, will be very useful in clinical practice as it improves the convenience and hygiene of blood viscosity measurement.
Liver abscess in children is rare in developed countries; the incidence is 25 per 100,000 admissions in USA. Common complications are pleural effusion, empyema, pneumonitis, hepatopleural or hepatobronchial fistula, intraperitoneal or intrapericardiac rupture, septic shock, cerebral amebiasis, etc. These complications may lead to death if the management is delayed. However, recent management results in a mortality of less than 15%. We report a case of liver abscess in a child. He manifested with fever and abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant. On computerized tomography scans, multiple cystic lesions were seen in both lobes of the liver and were 5 to 55 mm in size. In laboratory findings, neutrophilic leukocytosis, peripheral eosinophila, elevated values of ESR, C-reactive protein, and elevated serum AST, ALT, ALP and GGT were detected. Furthermore, we determined the organisms in the blood culture and serum. Blood culture was positive for Streptococcus spp., and amebic indirect hemagglutination antibody titer was increased to 1:512.
Reciprocal exchanges of DNA in sister chromatids (SCEs) are induced by various carcinogens and mutagens, although the quantitative relationship between the number of mutations and SCEs induced varies among chemicals. Nevertheless, the analysis of SCEs production by various agents often proposed as a sensitive and quantitative assay for mutagenicity and cytotoxicity. Mercury, even if which has no evidences for mutagenicity and carcinogenicity, is reported to exert some cytotoxic effects, such as chromosomal aberrations or bad influences to ovulation and reproduction in experimental animals, etc.. In this study, tests for sister chromatid exchanges have been carried out on normal human lymphocytes in whole blood culture to add mercury chloride ($HgCl_2$) or methylmercury chloride ($CH_3\;HgCl$) for 72 hr. The results indicate the dose-dependent relationship between the frequencies of SCEs and the concentrations of $HgCl_2,\;CH_{3}HgCl$ and 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU). Lymphocyte proliferation has depressed in the higher concentration of mercury.
Open heart surgery patients have additional risks arising from the special nature of the operative procedure. And postoperative infections in patients with extracorporeal circulation are associated with high incidence of serious sequelae. To investigate the incidence and organisms of contamination, and the relation between the duration of extracorporeal circulation and contamination, following study was done. Eighty-four of the open heart surgery patients were examined with cultures from the blood and priming solution before and after bypass. 1. Cultures before bypass were sterile, but 2 cases of cultures from the blood and priming solution after bypass were positive, and culture positive group was 5% of all patients. 2. The organisms were Gram-negative, aerobic coliform bacilli; 3. The culture positive group had significantly longer bypass time.
The studies were carried on to set up a short term blood culture method which is essential for doing bovine cytogenetic investigation and to reduce the amount of the various reagents wish better results obtained with modified methods were compared with the results of Basrur's and Halnan's methods, and the following results were obtained. 1. The modified method, with lesser amount of reagents than other methods, produced better results and showed cleaner spreads. 2. Better spreads were obtained, in the modified method, by modifying the hypotonic treatment. 3. Reduction of the PHA to 1/10 comparison with the other methods showed no harmful effects.

Burkholderia cepacia, a widespread gram-negative environmental bacillus associated with nosocomial infection, is considered to be of relatively low virulence and rarely to cause invasive disease in immunocompromised patients. Nosocomial infections resulting from the use of contaminted medication, antiseptics and instruments have also been reported in otherwise healthy hosts. We experienced two cases of B. cepacia sepsis in 10 year-old male who was medicated with the anticancer drugs for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL) and in 15 day-old newborn who was examined with voiding vesicourethrography(VCUG) for the evaluation of congenital hydronephrosis. The organism isolated from serial blood culture in ALL patient and from serial blood culture and urine culture in newborn examined with VCUG. The former ALL patient improved after antibacterial medication of imipenem and the latter newborn improved after treatment with imipenem and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
Background: The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of feeding trace mineralsfortified mixed microbial culture (TMC) on ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility, blood electrolyte status, nitrogen balance, and trace mineral balance in sheep. Methods: Mixed microbes [0.6 % (v/w) of Enterobacter sp., Bacillus sp., Lactobacillus sp., and Saccharomyces sp.] were cultured with 99 % feedstuffs and 0.4 % trace minerals including zinc and copper for ensiling. Six sheep (a mean body weight of $46.5{\pm}1.2kg$) were fed two diets: a control diet (concentrate mix and rye straw) and an experimental diet (a control diet + 3.1 % TMC). Results: TMC feeding did not induce negative effects on ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility, blood electrolytes, and nitrogen balance in sheep. Feeding with TMC increased the intake of trace minerals (p < 0.05) and did not affect absorption of trace minerals in the whole digestive tract. Feeding with TMC increased fecal excretion and absorbable intake, and retention of zinc and copper (p < 0.05) by 71 % and 77 %, respectively. Conclusion: Feeding with TMC resulted in higher zinc and copper bioavailability and retention without any adverse effects on sheep performance.

A 12-year-old intact female Pomeranian dog was presented with vulvar discharge, lethargy, polyuria, and polydipsia. A complete blood count revealed leukocytosis and anemia. The serum biochemical analyses showed elevated serum alkaline phosphatase activity and blood urea nitrogen. Survey abdominal radiography revealed an enlarged left kidney. Abdominal ultrasonography identified multiple rounded hypoechoic subcapsular lesions in the left kidney. The bilateral uterine horn was enlarged, and contained echogenic fluid. Percutaneous ultrasonographic-guided aspiration of the renal subcapsular lesions was performed on the left kidney. Cytological examination revealed bacterial cocci, degenerated neutrophils, and suppurative inflammation. Bacterial culture produced growth of Escherchia coli. Left nephrectomy and ovariohysterectomy were performed. Dilated uterine fluid was also evaluated for bacterial culture, and showed growth of E. coli. Urine was examined by bacterial culture, and showed negative results. The treatment consisted of antibiotic therapy according to the antibiotic sensitivity test. Based on these findings, the diagnosis was renal subcapsular abscess associated with pyometra. This study suggests that pyometra should be considered as the cause of renal abscess.
