The Effects of Miyairi (Clostridium butyricum Miyairi II 588) on the Hematology and Growth of Cultured Fishes (미야이리균 첨가에 따르는 양식어류의 성장과 혈액성상에 대하여)

  • The effects of Miyairi (Clostridium butyricum) on blood constituents and growth of cultured freshwater fishes, such as carp, tilapia and israeli carp were studied and then the following results were obtained : 1) All fishes produced the most efficient growth in 0.1% Miyairi-treated group. 2) Blood constituents of Miyairitreated group compared with those of contrul gruop showed no changes in RBCs. hemoglobin and hemato crit. and the increase in plasma protein and glucose. and the decrease in plasma cholesterol. 3) GOT level and GPT level in blood of Miyairi-treated group were almost equal to those in blood of control group.

  • Pathogen infections or mastitis inflammations usually develop differently on each udder of lactating cow. Although healthy udders will be attacked by the mastitis pathogens or the pathogens from blood in a long term, they would not be always inflamed. Somatic cell counts (SCC) in milk, which is utilized as an index of mastitis diagnosis, and the relation among SCC and milk constituents will have to be examined on each udder individually. Twelve cows of a Holstein cow herd in Nasu Research Station, which were suffering clinical or non-clinical mastitis, were selected, and SCC and milk constituents on each udder milk were measured. The effects of mastitis infection on udder milk components were relatively small except lactose content on udder milks of non-clinical mastitis (SCC< $10.0{\times}10^5$ per ml milk). On udder milks of clinical mastitis, however, high negative correlations were recognized between SCC and milk components. On different sampling days, high contents of fat and protein corresponded to that of total solids.

The Effects of Dietary Patterns and Apolipoprotein E Phenotype on the Blood Lipid Profiles of Individuals from Cheju Area (제주지역 성인의 Apolipoprotein E Phenotype 분포와 식생활 및 혈청지질 농도의 관련인자 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relation between serum lipid profiles, apolipoprotein E phenotype, and dietary patterns in a cross-section of healthy individuals from Cheju-Do. Age, gender, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, dietary consumption, drinking / smoking habits and menopausal status were surveyed. Total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose, and insulin levels were measured from overnight fasting blood. The study involved a total of 286 individuals(147 men and 139 women) between the ages of 20 and 60 years old. All of the subjects were recruited from a population of healthy individuals living in Cheju-Do. The results of the study are as follows : 1) Among the males, those in their 20's had the maximum food intake, while those in their 40's had the minimum food intake. For the females, food intake was the highest for those in their 30's. Energy and nutrient intakes were directly proportional to the amount of food intake. Men in their 30's were heavier than other men and women in their 40's were heavier than other women. The activity index for men in their 20's and 30's appeared to be lower than that of men above 40. The activity index of women in their 20's appeared to be lowest among all aged groups, and the index appeared to increase from the age of 30 onwards. 2) In terms of changes In serum constituents with age, men in their 40's appeared to have the highest levels of serum constituents such as lipids, glucose, and insulin. Men in their 50's showed the highest levels of serum LDL-cholesterol and glucose. Men in their 30's showed peak levels of serum triglycerides. On the other hand, women in their 50's appeared to have peak levels of serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides. There was no ch:ange with age in HDL-cholesterol and insulin levels for men and women. The percentage of the subjects had the following apo E phenotypes : E3/3, 91.3% ; E3/2, 5.4% ; E4/3, 2.5% ; E4/2, 0.7%. Lee's reserch with Korean female college students showed that the percentage of ApoE3/3, E3/2, E 4/2, E4/3, and E4/4 were 84.8%, 6.7%, 6.7%, 0.9%, 0.9%, respectively. The number of samples with ApoE mutation was so small that there was no statistical significance in the relation between apolipoprotein E phenotype and se겨m lipids. 3) To investigate the relati onship between weight and serum constituents, the subjects of this study were divided into three groups by BMI underweight, normal weight, and overweight. The serum constituents of men and women below the age 40 in the overweight groups belonged to the normal domain. On the other hand, serum cholesterol levels of both men and women above the age 40 in the overweight groups remained in the borderline-high region(above 200mg/dl), and the mean value of LDL-cholesterol(above 130mg/dl) and triglycerides of men were above normal. Fasting blood glucose levels also remained in the borderline-high region. Total cholesterol levels of women above the age 40 in the overweight group was in the borderline-high region. Changes of Body Fat Contents, Cardiopulmonary Functions and Some Blood Constituents by Long-Term Physical Training (장기간의 신체 단련에 따른 체지방, 심폐기능 및 혈액화학상의 변화)

  • In an attempt to observe the to long-term training effects, the exercise of rope-skipping was regularly loaded to nine soldiers for nine weeks. And some physical characteristics, cardiopulinonary functions. some blood constituents were measured before, during and after the load of test exercise. treadmill running, and were compared with the pre-trained values. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Body weight, body surface area, skinfold thickness and total body fat decreased sifnificantly after the training. 2) The post-trained values of MVV and $FEF_{25%}$, increased significantly. 3) By the training, heart rates decreased very significantly in the resting, exercising and recovery periods. 4) After the training, the systolic blood pressures of the resting and recovery periods decreased meaningfully, while diastolic blood pressures increased significantly through the recovery stages. 5) In spite of the training, the respiration rates never change in both the resting and the recovery periods. 6) After the training, total cholesterol concentration of the venous blood decreased significantly in the resting the early recovery phases while the blood levels of glucose and HDL-cholesterol decreased very slightly. 7) Blood lactate concentration decreased through the recovery periods and the value of the recovery 20 and 60 minutes decreased obviously, in comparison with the pre-trained values. The above results suggest that the 9 week-training of the rope-skipping brings about the decrease of the body fat contents, the enhancement of cardiopulmonary functions and some changes in the blood constituents.

Effects of induced heat stress on temperature response and biochemistry: alteration of biochemical constituents in Holstein calves by heat stress

  • The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the induced heat stress on physiological response and serum biochemical parameters involving glucose, cholesterol, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and cortisol in Holstein calves. Ten calves were kept in a climate controlled room (air temperature $37^{\circ}C$ and 90% humidity from 09:00 to 19:00) for three days. Those animals were given a one-day adaptation period. During the treatment period, we measured the skin temperature six times. Following the treatment periods, blood samples were collected before the experiment began (09:00) and at the end of the stress period (19:00). To aid analysis of the biochemical parameters, also we monitored the rectal temperature. The results, exhibited that both rectal and skin temperature showed increase in the heat stress-induced animals as compared with unstressed animals. Moreover, we noticed that the levels of BUN and NEFA increased in the blood serum of heat stress induced animals when compared with un-stressed ones. From these results, we concluded that the physiological and biochemical changes in the calves were induced by heat stress. Hence, the present study findings could be employed as base line data for development of stress reduction techniques in the dairy industry.

Plasma Hormones, Blood Metabolites, Milk Yield and Composition in Early Lactation of Buffaloes Treated with Bromocryptine

  • The study was conducted on six multiparous Murrah buffaloes which were earlier artificially induced into lactation. During the experimental period of 15 days, buffaloes were managed in a loose housing system. All the buffaloes were administered a single injection of bromocryptine (@ $100{\mu}g/kg$ body weight) subcutaneously in the neck region at 08:30 A.M., 50 days postpartum (early lactation). Blood samples were collected from four buffaloes for a period of 5 days before the administration of bromocryptine i.e. on days -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, on day of treatment (day 0) and thereafter daily for a period of 9 days i.e 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 to determine the hormones and blood metabolites. Homogeneous milk samples from all the buffaloes were collected at morning and evening milkings on days coinciding with the days of blood sampling for analysis of milk constituents. Administration of bromocryptine resulted in a significant inhibition of plasma prolactin within 24 hrs of treatment, but the response in all the buffaloes was not uniform. The effect of bromocryptine on plasma prolactin hormone lasted for 1-4 days but Cortisol concentration were not altered. Administration of bromocryptine neither affected blood glucose nor plasma non-esterified fatty acids concentration. Irrespective of level of milk production from different buffaloes, there was no effect of bromocryptine on milk yield which indicated that prolactin is not required for milk secretion during early lactation in buffaloes. Milk constituents like fat, protein and lactose were not affected by bromocryptine may be due to no effect of bromocryptine of milk yield.

The Nutrition and Health Survey of Aged People in a Rural Area II. Anthropometry, Blood Pressure, Blood Constituents, Diseases and Obesity Rate (일부지역 노인의 영양 및 건강상태에 관한 연구 II. 체위, 혈압, 혈액성상, 질병보유상태 및 비만도)

  • This survey was carried out to study the relationship between observable factor such as anthropometry, blood pressure, food habit, the score of THI and diseases of 459 persons (male: 188, female: 271) aged 60 and over in the rural area of Kurye - Gun Chonnam from April 28 to May 1, 1986. The results obtained were as follo\ulcornerws 1) Body weight and height was below Korean average. The mean obesity rate in male and female showed -2.3% and 3.4%, respectively, and BMI showed 25.8 and 26.0 respectively. 2) The systolic and diastolic blood pressure was normal in both sexes. The pro opotion of hypertension by WHO level showed 19.6% and 20.3% in male and fem\ulcornerale, respectively_ The proportion of anemia showed 57.9% and 41.7% in male and female, respectively. The concentration of total protein, albumin, cholesterol and gl\ulcornerucose and white blood cell number showed normal range in both sexes. 3) The proportion of the disease showed 68% of male and 83% of female and among them 50% of male and 43% of female suffered from one kind of disease and there are more female who suffered from many kinds of diseases than male. The most common disease is neuralgia and nexts are digestive diseases, diabetes melli\ulcornertus, urinary disturbance, motion disturbance, arthritis, respiratory diseases, tubecu\ulcornerlosis and hepatitis. 4) There was a significant correlation between body height and weight and the score of food habit. 5) There was a considerable relation between the score of each item of TIll and the status of diseases. 6) There appeared profound relation between obesity rate and the data of anth\ulcornerropometry, but weak relation between that and blood constituents, and no relation between that and the score of food habit.

Changes of hematological parameters and plasma constituents in the olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus exposed to TBT (TBT 노출에 따른 넙치, Paralichthys olivaceus의 혈액학적 성상 및 혈장성분의 변화)

  • Juvenile Paralichthys olivaceus (mean length $17.3{\pm}2.2cm$, mean weight $46.5{\pm}6.3g$) were exposed for 10 days to tributyltin (TBT) at various concentrations (0, 1, 2, 4 and $8{\mu}g/L$). Hematological parameters, such as red blood cell (RBC) count, hematocrit (Ht), and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, were considerably decreased by high TBT concentrations. In plasma constituents, inorganic components such calcium and magnesium were also significantly altered. Plasma calcium was notably decreased, whereas plasma magnesium was increased. The enzyme components, glutamic oxalate transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvate transaminase (GPT), were significantly decreased by TBT exposure. The present findings suggest that TBT exposure can cause significant alterations in hematological parameters and plasma constituents of flatfish Paralichthys olivaceus.

Effects of Gossypol Injection into the Stroma of Testis on Blood Constituents in Mice (생쥐 정소실질내 Gossypol 투여가 혈액성상에 미치는 영향)

  • We have previously shown that gossypol injection into the stroma of testis was found to effectively inhibit the process of spermatogenesis. In this study, properties and chemistry of blood were investigated weekly in ICR mouse after the injection of gossypol into the testicular stroma(5, 10 or 15mg per kg body weight). There were no significant differences in red blood cell(RBC), hematocrit, white blood cell(WBC), basophils, eosinophils and monocytes during first 4 weeks after injection of gossypol between treatments, but neutrophils increased and lymphocytes decreased, respectively(P<0.05). Total content of protein, albumin and globulin were not different, compared with control. However, the concentration of glucose after injection of gossypol increased significantly(P<0.05). In conculsion, the results of this study indicated that injection of gossypol into stroma of testis might affect both properties and chemistry of blood in mice.

Identification of the Constituents for Nrf2 Activation and NF-${\kappa}B$ Suppression in Dangguisoo-san

  • Previously, we showed that Dangguisoo-san (DGSS), an herbal formula that has been traditionally used for the treatment of blood stagnation, is also applicable for inflammatory lung diseases. Activation of Nrf2, an anti-inflammatory transcription factor, and suppression of NF-${\kappa}B$, a pro-inflammatory transcription factor, were suggested as an underlying mechanism. However, the constituents responsible for these activities remain unidentified. To this end, we prepared the water extracts of the 9 constituents of DGSS and tested for their effect on Nrf2 by using an Nrf2-Luciferase reporter cell line and western blot analysis. Results show that Carthamus tinctorius L.(CT), one of the 9 constituents of DGSS, strongly activated Nrf2. Similarly, when measured the effect of the 9 constituents on NF-${\kappa}B$ by using an NF-${\kappa}B$-Luciferase reporter cell line and western blotting for nuclear p65, indicative of activated NF-${\kappa}B$, most constituents were capable of suppressing NF-${\kappa}B$ in various degrees. However, CT and Cyperus rotundus L. (CR) strongly suppressed NF-${\kappa}B$ activity elicited by LPS. Of note, CT activated Nrf2 and suppressed NF-${\kappa}B$ strongly as well. Our results contributes to corroborating the anti-inflammatory effects of DGSS by identifying CT and CR as two major herbs responsible for activating Nrf2 and suppressing NF-${\kappa}B$. These results suggest that CT and CR represent some of the effects of DGSS in the regulation of inflammation.
