  • The effects of dietary Coptis chinensis herb extract (CHE) on growth performance, blood characteristics, nutrient digestibility and meat quality of growing-finishing pigs were investigated in an 18-wk feeding trial. A total of 36 Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire-Duroc pigs with an initial body weight of $20{\pm}1.0$ kg were randomly assigned to 3 dietary treatments with 6 replications per treatment and 2 pigs per pen. A maize-soybean meal-based diet was formulated as a control diet and other treatment diets were supplemented with 0.5, or 1 g CHE/kg, respectively. After the feeding period, meat samples were collected from those pigs that had reached the market BW. During the experimental periods, growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and nitrogen were unaffected (p>0.05) by the dietary supplementation of CHE. Plasma erythrocytes counts were increased (Linearly, p<0.05) in response to application of CHE at the end of the experiment. Moreover, pigs fed the CHE diets had better (p<0.05) meat color, pH and water holding capacity (WHC) than pigs fed the control diet. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with CHE could increase blood erythrocytes counts and improve meat quality in growing-finishing pigs but not improve growth performance.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of baking bread and cookies supplemented with taurine and the effect of taurine addition on BAC(blood alcohol concentrations) and UAC(urine alcohol concentrations). Healthy male college students were divided into two groups, the control and the taurine group. Bread was baked with the addition of 0, 2, 4 and 6% taurine and baked with the addition 0, 3 and 6% taurine. The bread containing 2% taurine showed the fastest fermentation among the 4 groups. Fermentation and oven-spring of breads baked with a taurine concentration greater than 4% of taurine disturbed. In some areas of the sensory test, the taurine supplemented bread had higher scores than the control bread. We served 6 g of taurine supplemented cookies with 1,000 $m{\ell}$ of beer to 8 students in the taurine group. After 2 hours of drinking beer, the BAC and UAC of the taurine group were found to be lower than the control group. But no difference was found in the alcohol excretion of their urine. From this study we concluded that the taurine has an effect on the detoxication of alcohol, which reduces the BAC.

  • Shigellosis is the most common bacterial gastroenteritis both in developing and developed countries, but bacteremia due to Shigella spp. is very rare. In developed countries recent shigellosis is mostly caused by S. sonnei, but S. flexeri infection is rare. We had rare cases of S. flexeri infections in a family in the Jeonbuk Province: an 8-year-old boy with bacteremic shigellosis and 10- and 12-year-old brothers with diarrhea. The isolates had identical biochemical characteristics, and were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and co-trimoxazole. PFGE pattern of Not I-restricted genomic DNA suggested that the isolate from blood was closely related to the two strains isolated from stool which had an identical PFGE pattern.

  • 300 MHz proton NMR spectra of human blood plasma were analyzed by deconvolution of spectrum, and we compared its results with Fossel's test in normal (15 cases), liver cancer (14 cases) , and other cancer (14 cases) groups. This analysis had enabled us to obtain dynamic characteristics of each individual lipoprotein. As a result of deconvolution method, the VLDL and chylomicron intensity level were found to be elevated in the patients with liver cancer. Moment ratio values of $CH_2$ resonance in the raw spectrum were found to be higher than the normal group for patients with, malignant tumors other than liver cancer. These differences between the three groups could not be found in the conventional Fossel's test. We could simulate plasma spectra by addition of spectra of individual lipoproteins through deconvolution method. Further clinical trials in larger populations and additional biochemical method may shed new light on many of clinical and biochemical interests for knowing characteristics about lipoprotein not separated from blood and the background of Fossel test.

  • AMB(Active Magnetic Bearing) systems are popularly used in various areas. In biomedical engineering applications it is a key part of magnetically suspended rotary blood pumps. The special advantage of AMBs is that they enable the rotor to revolve with no physical contact and provide rotary blood pumps with better performances such as low hemolysis level. Fundamentally, AMB systems consist of three parts, proximity sensors for distance detection, microprocessor for control algorithm and power amplifiers for actuating electromagnets. We have developed an inductive type proximity sensor with satisfactory characteristics that can be used in AMB systems. Frequency response was flat at least up to 10 kHz and sensitivity, resolution$(>5{\mu}m)$ and sensing range(<5mm) of the sensor could be adjustable for various purposes. The characteristics of the completed model showed to have satisfactory behaviors compared with the commercially available ones that already appeared to have reliable behaviors in AMB systems.

  • It has long been suggested that the cardiac atrium is a low pressure volume receptor controlling body fluid volume and blood pressure. Recently, the cardiac atrium has been found to contain a family of powerful peptides. To clarify the relationship between high blood pressure and the biologically active atrial peptides, experiments were done to define the characteristics of atrial natriuretic peptide secretion in the isolated perfused atria of renal hypertensive rats. Higher concentrations of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide and renin activity were observed in the two-kidney, one clip hypertensive rat compared to the normotensive rat. Atrial volume changes in response to pressure elevations were attenuated in hypertensive rats compared to normotensive rats. Incremental response to atrial volume changes in ANP secretion was accentuated in hypertensive rats. These date suggest that the accentuated atrial natriuretic peptide response to volume changes of hypertensive rats may be a physiological or pathphysiological adaptation to the high blood pressure and may be, at least in part, responsible for the elevated levels of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide observed in hypertensive rats.

  • Peripheral blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PB-MSCs) have shown promise in cell-based therapy, as they can be harvested with ease through minimally invasive procedures. This study aimed to isolate PB-MSCs from foals and mares and to compare the proliferation and cellular characteristics of the PB-MSCs between the two groups. Six pairs of mares and their foals were used in this study. MSCs were isolated from PB by direct plating in a tissue culture medium, and cell proliferation (population doubling time [PDT], and colony-forming unit-fibroblast assay [CFU-F]), and characterization (morphology, plastic adhesiveness, colony formation, trilineage differentiation) were examined. There was no significant difference in the PB-MSC yield, CFU-F, and PDT between the mares and foals. PB-MSCs from both mares and foals showed typical MSC characteristics in terms of spindle-shaped morphology, plastic adhesive properties, formation of colonies, trilineage differentiation. These results suggest that PB-MSCs isolated from horses, both adult horses, and foals, can be used for equine cell-based therapy.

  • Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of β-mannanase on growth performance, carcass characteristics, excreta microflora, blood constituents, and nutrient digestibility in broiler chickens. Methods: A total of 680 one-d-old Ross 308 (as hatched) broiler chickens were used in a 35-d growth assay. Chicks were sorted into pens with 17 birds/pen and 10 pens/treatment. Treatment diets were contained either 44% or 48% crude protein (CP) soybean meal (SBM) with or without β-mannanase. Results: Using SBM containing 48% CP led to an improvement (p<0.05) in feed conversion ratio (FCR) from d 1 to 14. Addition of β-mannanase to the diets significantly improved body weight gain (BWG) and FCR from d 1 to 14. During overall experimental period, BWG was affected (p<0.05) by CP level of SBM and inclusion of β-mannanase, but FCR and feed intake were not affected. Carcass characteristics were not influenced by treatment diets. The results showed that digestibility of dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N), and energy was not affected by CP level of SBM and/or inclusion of β-mannanase. Among essential amino acids (EAA) apparent digestibility of valine, methionine, and leucine improved (p<0.05) by the addition of β-mannanase to the diets. The results demonstrated that ileal digestibility of DM, N, and energy was not affected by treatment diets. Among EAA, the ileal digestibility of valine and arginine was higher (p<0.05) in the diets containing 48% CP SBM and/or β-mannanase. Excreta Lactobacillus count increased (p<0.05) by the addition of β-mannanase to the diets. Blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and total protein level were not affected by treatments. Conclusion: Feeding chickens with diets containing 44% CP SBM resulted in detrimental effects on growth performance and digestibility of nutrients, but addition of β-mannanase to the 44% CP diet improved the growth performance of chickens without any effects on carcass characteristics.
