The purpose of this study was to test whether moderate alcohol consumption has any positive effect on lowering blood pressure among Koreans. Study subjects were Korean adults 20 years or older (n=5,234) who participated in the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Analysis of variance and analysis of covariance were used to construct univariate and multivariate models relating alcohol consumption to blood pressure for the analysis. After adjustment for possible covariates, drinkers (regardless of drinking level) had significantly higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure, compared with never-drinker for male subjects. Diastolic and systolic blood pressures were also significantly elevated with the drinking frequency and amount of alcohol intake among male subjects. For the female subjects, only diastolic blood pressure was significantly associated with the alcohol consumption at multivariate model. however, low level alcohol consumption did not show any sign of lowing effects on blood pressure. The result implies that moderate alcohol consumption did not have any positive effect on lowering blood pressure among Koreans for either sex.

Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the changes of vision and ocular functions induced by increase of blood alcohol level. Methods: Blood alcohol level, vision, refractive errors, near point convergence, heterophoria, and relative convergence were measured at 1 h, 4 h, and 24 h after acute alcohol ingestion of 0.7 g per kg body weight. Results: At 1 h after alcohol ingestion, myopization and ocular functions which measured near point convergence, positive and negative convergences, and degree of heterophoria remarkedly worked a changes accompanied with the maximum value of blood alcohol level. But at 24 h after that, all of ocular functions were recovered to degree of 90~99% compared with non-alcoholic normal conditions. Conclusions: As the increase of blood alcohol level is able to induce the significant changes of visual acuity and ocular functions, opticians have to understand thoroughly the patient's conditions by alcohol ingestion before refractive test and ocular examinations.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of turmeric intake and weight training on blood alcohol concentration, liver enzyme levels of and their effects on health promotion in adult males. There was no significant difference of taking turmeric powder combined with weight training exercise on blood alcohol levels in adult men who consumed alcohol on a regular basis. There was also no change on the change of body composition. The results were collected from elite athletes that had spent more than 10 years in their respective sports so it is difficult to observe any significant results from 8 weeks, short-term exercises of 1RM 70~80%, 3 times per week. In the next study, it is necessary to divide the subjects into more diverse groups and subject them by varying amounts of turmeric intake, exercise, etc., in order to fully study and understand the effects on blood alcohol level, change, and health promotion. Consequently, this study demonstrated there were no significant differences in the effects of continuous drinking habits of adult men's turmeric powder intake and weight training exercise on changes in GOT, GPT, γ-GTP, and blood alcohol concentrations. Moreover, health improvements themselves didn't affect changes in body composition.
The study was conducted to determine whether oak wood vinegar extract influences blood alcohol concentration and hangover syndrome in healthy volunteers. 2% wood vinegar extract was effective to inhibit increase of blood alcohol concentration after alcohol intake and showed significantly different (P<0.1) compared to placebo. By result of questionnaire of volunteers, wood vinegar extract showed effects improving hangover syndrome. In comparative study about blood alcohol concentration and hangover syndrome of wood vinegar extract and other extract that hangover improvement effect was reported, average maximum blood alcohol concentration was lowered in those taking wood vinegar extract than those taking other extract. At drinking completion 210minutes (T210), blood alcohol concentration of those taking wood vinegar extract was the lowest by 0.063% compared with other extract but was not significantly different between in those taking wood vinegar extract and in those taking other extract. However, wood vinegar extract's experimental group was the highest by 0.462 in decrement rate of blood alcohol concentration and, when did P<0.1 by significance level, indicated difference that mean statistically compared to placebo group uniquely. At those taking wood vinegar extract, the improvement rate and the aggravation rate of hangover syndrome was each 87%, 2%. Thus it was concluded that wood vinegar extract showed excellent alcohol oxidation and was effective in hangover improvement.
This study was conducted to evaluate the relations between alcohol intake and blood lipid level in a group of 1,138 Korean adult men, ages 20 to 69 years. Total number of each of a variety of drinks in the previous two weeks was obtained by questionnaire and converted into grams of alcohol consumed in a week. The levels of blood lipid such as Cholesterol, HDL-Cholesterol, Triglyceride and LDL-Cholesterol were examined by enzyme method. We also observed the effects of various variables such as age, body mass index, smoking, exercise and blood pressure on blood lipid level. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Average weekly alcohol intake was $129.0{\pm}167.4gm$ and that of 30-39 age group was the highest as $149.3{\pm}170.4gm$. 2. Levels of Cholesterol Triglyceride and LDL-Cholesterol tended to increase with increasing age, but level of HDL-Cholesterol showed no significant relationship with age. 3. The positive linear regressions of alcohol intake on HDL-Cholesterol and Triglyceride were noted statistically significant. 4. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that the effect of alcohol on HDL-Cholesterol and Triglyceride was statistically significant and the contribution rates were 5.0% and 0.8%, respectively. And, in the case of HDL-Cholesterol, the alcohol intake was the most significant independent variable.
Objectives: This experiment was conducted to verify the effects of Chungganhaeju-tang(Qingganjiejiu-tang) on the alcohol metabolism and liver functions, by measuring the activity levels of ADH and ALDH, as well as glucose, triglyceride, and BUN. Damage of the liver cells caused by alcohol was determined through the examination of serum levels of AST, ALT, ALP, LDH, and uric acid. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this experiment and the rats were divided into control and experiment groups. Chungganhaeju-tang(Qingganjiejiu-tang) extract was orally administered in the experiment group for three weeks. Each group was further classified into two sub-groups, and control group's blood was taken without oral ingestion of alcohol, while the experiment group' s blood was withdrawn after ingestion of alcohol. Evaluation of damage level was done considering the presence of extract and alcohol. Results: In this experiment, Chungganhaeju-tang(Qingganjiejiu-tang) significantly suppressed the activity of ADH which is a precursor enzyme of acetaldehyde, but didn't cause significant changes in the activity of ALDH which is a catabolic enzyme. Decreased glucose level due to alcohol consumption was recovered back to the normal level and increased levels of triglyceride, BUN, AST, ALT, ALP, LDH, and uric acid were significantly reduced. Conclusions: These experiment results suggest that Chungganhaeju-tang(Qingganjiejiu-tang) inhibits the formation of acetaldehyde in the metabolism of alcohol, and affects the recovery of weakened liver functions due to alcohol.
The objective of this study was to investigate nutritional status of middle aged Korean men exhibiting impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and identify the risk factors related to IGT Data were collected from 163 men with a fasting blood glucose level from 115 to 139mg/dl(high blood glucose group: HBG) and 170 men with a normal fasting blood glucose level(control) aged from 40 to 59 years in both groups. Weight, body mass index(BMI) and percent body fat were significantly higher in high blood glucose(HBG) group than those of control group. Age, weight, BMI, percent body fat were positively related to blood glucose. There were no differences in exercise, smoking and family history of diabetes between two groups. Frequency of fat eating and overeating of HBG were higher than those of control group but frequency of sweet snacks intake of HBG was lower than that of control group. There was no difference in daily total energy intake in two groups. Total and supper energy intakes were positively associated with blood glucose. Percent energy intake of alcohol was significantly higher in HBG group and positively related to blood glucose, however there were no difference in daily intake of nutrients in two groups. Alcohol intake was positively related to BMI, but after adjusting BMI, there was no correlation between alcohol intake and blood glucose. Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly higher in HBG group than those of control group. Serum total cholesterol i,nd triglyceride were positively related to blood glucose and high density lipoprotein cholesterol was negatively associated with blood glucose. After adjusting BMI, serum triglyceride was positively related to blood glucose. In conclusion, weight, BMI, percent body fat and blood total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels were positively related to blood glucose level of middle aged Korean men exhibiting impaired glucose tolerance. Their eating habits exhibited higher frequency of overeating, fast eating, high energy intakes of supper. (Korean J Nutrition 33(1) : 59-67, 2000)
Allyl alcohol is metabolized in the liver through two steps, first to reactive acrolein by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), subsequently to acrylic acid by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). Since ethanol could compete the same enzymes to be metabolized in the liver, we have determined the plasma concentrations of allyl alcohol and ethanol followed by combined treatment. Pretreatment of rats with 2g/kg ethanol followed by ip administration of 40mg/kg allyl alcohol increased the lethality significantly. Determination of in vivo blood concentrations revealed that ethanol pretreatment caused the apparent decrease in allyl alcohol clearance, whereas acetaldehyde level in blood increased significantly by allyl alcohol treatment, as determined by head space GC analysis. Treatment of 4-methylpyrazole, an inhibitor of ADH, delayed allyl alcohol elimination significantly and reduced its lethality. Collectively, these findings suggested that reduction of allyl alcohol clearance in the presence oj ethanol was mediated through ADH competitive inhibition.
Five kinds of packed column and two kinds of capillary column were used to get optimum condition for ethanol analysis by using fifteen different volatile, low molecular weight organic substances. Only two columns, Gaskuropack 54 and DB-1, showed good separation efficiency. In the adding salt-effect experiment 0.6N - perchloric acid, 1M - meta-phosphoric acid and saturated NaCl solution were used for alcohol concentration measurement of biological fluids and tissue specimens. Among adding salt experiment, adding saturated NaCl solution showed the most stable value of alcohol concentration. This fact might be due to the increased vaporization of alcohol in the saturated NaCl solution. In the time-course of blood alcohol concentration, the alcohol level was lineary decreased to the diameter of vessel containing specimens. This result was interpreted in view of ethanol level, weight, water content, and hematocrit value. The ethanol distribution levels were measured from samples of blood and tissue obtained from 25 postmortems cases investigated by NISI. This study showed that the distribution level was decreased in order of brain, blood, kidney, spleen, liver, and lung.
This study was conducted by surveying 616 male workers living in Ulsan City regarding their health status based on lifestyles such as alcohol consumption, smoking and exercising as well as physical measurements and biochemical tests. The average height, weight and BMI(body mass index, $kg/m^2$) of the subjects was 170.9cm, 70.2kg and 24.2, respectively. The rate of drinking was $80.9\%$ and the rate of smoking was $53.4\%$. Seventy four percent of subjects responded that they exercise regularly. The results of the blood biochemical tests revealed that the average hemoglobin concentration was 14.7g/dl, and the levels of GPT(glutamic pyruvic transaminase) and GOT (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) were 32.74unit/l, 26.99 unit/l, respectively. The average hemoglobin concentration for the subjects aged in the 50s was 14.39g/dl, which was significantly lower than those in the 20s(14.81g/dl), 30s(14.69g/dl) and 40s(14.73g/dl). The blood glucose level and the cholesterol level also increased with age. Also investigated was the blood pressure of the subjects increased with age,. and there was a significant increase(p < 0.05) for the subjects in the 50s compared to those in the 20s. The frequency of alcoholic beverages was significantly correlated with systolic/ diastolic blood pressure(p < 0.05) and $\gamma-GTP(gamma\;glutamyl\; transpeptidase)$(p<0.01). The duration of smoking showed a negative correlation(p < 0.05) with the hemoglobin and positive correlations with diastolic blood pressure, cholesterol and $\gamma-GTP(p<0.01)$. The study shows that blood pressure, blood glucose level, cholesterol level, GOT, GPT and $\gammaGTP$ level, increase with age, which indicates higher possibility of degenerative diseases, calling for nutritional education in terms of advisable lifestyles regarding eating habits, alcohol consumption, smoking and regular exercise.
