  • As realistic media are widespread in various image processing areas, image or video compression is one of the key technologies to enable real-time applications with limited network bandwidth. Generally, image or video compression cause the unnecessary compression artifacts, such as blocking artifacts and ringing effects. In this study, we propose a Deep Residual Channel-attention Network, so called DRCAN, which consists of an input layer, a feature extractor and an output layer. Experimental results showed that the proposed DRCAN can reduced the total memory size and the inference time by as low as 47% and 59%, respectively. In addition, DRCAN can achieve a better peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index measure for compressed images compared to the previous methods.

  • In this paper, intrusion detection technique based on the sound field variation of audio frequency in the security space is proposed. The sound field formed by sound source can be detected with the microphone when the obstacle or intruder is positioned. The sound field variation due to the intruder is based on the interference of audio wave. With the help of numerical simulation of sound field formations, the increase or decrease of sound pressure level is analyzed not only the obstacle, but also the intruder. Even the microphone is positioned behind the source, sound pressure level can be increase or decrease due to the interference. Frequency response test is performed with Gaussian white noise signal to get the whole frequency response from 0 to half of sampling frequency. There are three security cases. Case 1 is the situation of empty space with and without intruder, case 2 is the situation of blocking obstacle with and without intruder, and case 3 is the situation of side blocking obstacle with and without intruder. At each case, the frequency response is obtained first at the security space without intruder, and second with intruder. From the experiment, intruder size of $50cm{\times}50cm$ can be successfully detected with the proposed technique. Moreover, the case 2 or case 3 bring about bigger sound field variation. It means that the proposed technique have the potential of more credible security sensing in real situation.

  • Purpose: Eupatilin is an antioxidative flavone and a phytopharmaceutical derived from Artemisia asiatica. It has been reported to possess anti-tumor activity in some types of cancer including gastric cancer. Eupatilin may modulate the angiogenesis pathway which is part of anti-inflammatory effect demonstrated in gastric mucosal injury models. Here we investigated the anti-tumor effects of eupatilin on gastric cancer cells and elucidated the potential underlying mechanism whereby eupatilin suppresses angiogenesis and tumor growth. Materials and Methods: The impact of eupatilin on the expression of angiogenesis pathway proteins was assessed using western blots in MKN45 cells. Using a chromatin immunoprecipitation assay, we tested whether eupatilin affects the recruitment of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT) and hypoxia-inducible factor-$1{\alpha}$ (HIF-$1{\alpha}$) to the human VEGF promoter. To investigate the effect of eupatilin on vasculogenesis, tube formation assays were conducted using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The effect of eupatilin on tumor suppression in mouse xenografts was assessed. Results: Eupatilin significantly reduced VEGF, ARNT and STAT3 expression prominently under hypoxic conditions. The recruitment of STAT3, ARNT and HIF-$1{\alpha}$ to the VEGF promoter was inhibited by eupatilin treatment. HUVECs produced much foreshortened and severely broken tubes with eupatilin treatment. In addition, eupatilin effectively reduced tumor growth in a mouse xenograft model. Conclusions: Our results indicate that eupatilin inhibits angiogenesis in gastric cancer cells by blocking STAT3 and VEGF expression, suggesting its therapeutic potential in the treatment of gastric cancer.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm with adaptive thresholding for the wavelet transform (WT) based blocking artifact reduction. In the fast algorithm, all processings that are equivalent to the processing in WT domain of the first and second scale are performed in spatial domain. In the adaptive thresholding, the threshold values used to classify the block boundary are selected adaptively according to each input image by using the statistical properties of the WT of the coded signal at block boundary and at block center, which can be obtained in spatial domain. Experimental results showed that the proposed fast algorithm is about 10 times faster than the WT-based algorithm. It also was found that the postprocessing with proposed adaptive thresholding yields some PSNR improvement and better subjective quality over that with nonadaptive thresholding which has best performance at high compression ratios of a certain .image, even at low compression ratios.

  • Nausea and emesis are a major side effect and obstacle for chemotherapy in cancer patients. Employ of antiemetic drugs help to suppress chemotherapy-induced emesis in some patients but not all patients. Ginger, an herbal medicine, has been traditionally used to treat various kinds of diseases including gastrointestinal symptoms. Ginger is effective in alleviating nausea and emesis, particularly, for cytotoxic chemotherapy drug-induced emesis. Ginger-mediated antiemetic effect has been attributed to its pungent constituents-mediated inhibition of serotonin (5-HT) receptor activity but its cellular mechanism of action is still unclear. Emetogenic chemotherapy drugs increase 5-HT concentration and activate visceral vagal afferent nerve activity. Thus, 5-HT mediated vagal afferent activation is essential to provoke emesis during chemotherapy. In this experiment, water extract of ginger and its three major pungent constituent's effect on 5-HT-evoked responses were tested on acutely dispersed visceral afferent neurons with patch-clamp methods. The ginger extract has similar effects to antiemetic drug ondansetron by blocking 5-HT-evoked responses. Pungent constituents of the ginger, [6]-shogaol, [6]-gingerol, and zingerone inhibited 5-HT responses in a dose dependent manner. The order of inhibitory potency for these compounds were [6]-shogaol>[6]-gingerol>zingerone. Unlike well-known competitive 5-HT3 receptor antagonist ondansetron, all tested ginger constituents acted as non-competitive antagonist. Our results imply that ginger and its pungent constituents exert antiemetic effects by blocking 5-HT-induced emetic signal transmission in vagal afferent neurons.

  • This thesis proposes a new type of Input-Output Buffered ATM Switch which employs an arbiter and its performance under different traffic conditions studied. The proposed switch is designed with a view to exploit the architecture and other characteristics of the arbiter. The primary aim of the proposed switch is the elimination, or at least, the reduction of HOL blocking phenomenon which occurs in the simple input buffered switch. Several HOL arbitration algorithms have been proposed for this purpose in the literature. The proposed switch attempts to reduce the HOL blocking as it uses the arbiter and the buffer at the output port in an effective manner. The arbiter is designed to work with Three Phase Algorithm which is one of the many well known HOL arbitration algorithms. The Proposed switch acquires control over priority transmission through the REQ signal. As the signals are transmitted to the arbiter, the latter controls the one which is sent by the input buffer. Computer simulation results have been provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Proposed switch under uniform traffic conditions.

  • Blocking and ringing artifacts continue to be the most serious defects that occur in images and video streams compressed to low bit rates using block-based discrete cosine transform(DCT) compression standards. These artifacts contain the high frequency components near the block and the edge boundaries. Usually the lowpass filter can remove them. However, simple lowpass filter results into blur by removing important information such as edges at the same time. To overcome these problems, we propose a novel postfiltering algorithm that calculate the weight value based on the intensity similarity in the neighboring pixels and multiply this weight to the Gaussian lowpass filter coefficient. Experimental results show that the proposed technique provides satisfactory performance in both objective and subjective image quality.

  • In this paper, an adaptation mode controller for adaptive microphone array system is proposed for high-quality speech acquisition in real environments. To ensure proper adaptation of the adaptive array algorithm, the proposed adaptation mode controller uses not only temporal information, but also spatial information. The proposed adaptation mode controller is constructed with two processing stages: an initialization stage and a running stage. In the initialization stage, a sound source localization technique is adopted, and a signal correlation characteristic is used in the running stage. For the adaptive may algorithm, a generalized sidelobe canceller with an adaptive blocking matrix is used. The proposed adaptation mode controller can be used even when the adaptive blocking matrix is not adapted, and is much stable than the power ratio method. The proposed algorithm is evaluated in real environment, and simulation results show 13dB SINR improvement with the speaker sitting 2m distance from the may.
