The work reported here is an extensive study of tendon response to multiple cyclic tests including 3% constant peak strain level test (A-type test), 3% constant peak strain level test with two rest periods (B-type test), and 3∼4% different peak strain level test (C-type test). A sufficient number of specimens were tested at each type of the test to statistically evaluate many changes in response during testing and differences in response between each type of the test. In cyclic tests, there were decreses (relaxations) in the peak stresses and hysteresis, increases in the slack strains, and during lower peak strain level (3%) cyclic block after higher peak strain level (4%) cyclic block in the C-type tests. Considering the results of this study and those of the other study of multiple cyclic tests with rest periods by Hubbard and Chun, 1985, recovery phenomena during the rest periods occurred predominantly at the beginning of the rest periods. Consistently in both studies, the effects of rest periods were small and transient compared to the effects of the cyclic extensions. The recovery with cycles at lower peak strain level (3%) after higher peak strain level (4%) in the C-type test has not been previously documented. This recovery seems to be a natural phenomena in tissue behavior so that collagenous structures recover during periods of decreased demand.

We proposed and efficient block segmentation and classification method for the document analysis using SGLDM(spatial gray level dependence matrix) and BP (back Propagation) neural network. Seven texture features are extracted directly from the SGLDM of each gray-level block image, and by using the nonlinear classifier of neural network BP, we can classify document blocks into 9 categories. The proposed method classifies the equation block, the table block and the flow chart block, which are mostly composed of the characters, out of the blocks that are conventionally classified as non-character blocks. By applying Sobel operator on the gray-level document image beforebinarization, we can reduce the effect of the background noises, and by using the additional horizontal-vertical smoothing as well as the vertical-horizontal smoothing of images, we can obtain an effective block segmentation that does not lead to the segmentation into small pieces. The result of experiment shows that a document can be segmented and classified into the character blocks of large fonts, small fonts, the character recognigible candidates of tables, flow charts, equations, and the non-character blocks of photos, figures, and graphs.

This article presents key research needs in three-dimensional integrated circuit (3D IC) architectural floorplanning. Architectural floorplaning is done at a very early stage of 3D IC design process, where the goal is to quickly evaluate architectural designs described in register-transfer level (RTL) in terms of power, performance, and reliability. This evaluation is then fed back to architects for further improvement and/or modifications needed to meet the target constraints. We discuss the details of the following research needs in this article: block-level modeling, through-silicon-via (TSV) insertion and management, and chip/package co-evaluation. The goal of block-level modeling is to obtain physical, power, performance, and reliability information of architectural blocks. We then assemble the blocks into multiple tiers while connecting them using TSVs that are placed in between hard IPs and inside soft IPs. Once a full-stack 3D floorplanning is obtained, we evaluate it so that the feedback is provided back to architects.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of cutting frequency and nitrogen fertilization on th change of vegetation and the yield of dry matter on the different mixture combination of permanent pasture. 1. DM yield was increased as the increasing Arrhenatherum elntius but was decreased as the increasing Tkisetum fkavescens. 2. DM yield was unaffectdd by the different mixture combination of permanent pasture eventually. 3. In case of cutting frequency, 2-cutting showed higher DM yield than that of 3-cutting, and N-fertilization level showed significant increase in DM yield as the increasing N-level, especially 2-cutting block of N-3 showed the highest yield and 3-cutting block of N-l showed the lowest yield. 4. Mixture combination, N-level and cutting frequency did not show significant changes in DM yield of permanent pasture eventually.
We evaluate the link-level performance of cooperative multi-hop relaying networks with an maximum distance separable (MDS) code. The effect of the code on the link-level performance at the destination is investigated in terms of the outage probability and the spectral efficiency. Assuming a simple topology, we construct an absorbing Markov chain. Numerical results indicate that significant improvement can be achieved by incorporating an MDS code. MDS codes successfully facilitate recovery of the message block at a relaying node due to powerful error-correcting capability, so that it can reduce the outage probability. Furthermore, we evaluate the average number of hops where the message block can be delivered.

Study Design: In-vitro biomechanical investigation. Purpose: To evaluate the biomechanical effects of the degeneration of the biodegradable cervical plates developed for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) on fusion and adjacent levels. Overview of Literature: Biodegradable implants have been recently introduced for cervical spine surgery. However, their effectiveness and safety remains unclear. Methods: A linear three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the lower cervical spine, comprising the C4-C6 vertebrae was developed using computed tomography images of a 46-year-old woman. The model was validated by comparison with previous reports. Four models of ACDF were analyzed and compared: (1) a titanium plate and bone block (Tita), (2) strong biodegradable plate and bone block (PLA-4G) that represents the early state of the biodegradable plate with full strength, (3) weak biodegradable plate and bone block (PLA-1G) that represents the late state of the biodegradable plate with decreased strength, and (4) stand-alone bone block (Bloc). FE analysis was performed to investigate the relative motion and intervertebral disc stress at the surgical (C5-C6 segment) and adjacent (C4-C5 segment) levels. Results: The Tita and PLA-4G models were superior to the other models in terms of higher segment stiffness, smaller relative motion, and lower bone stress at the surgical level. However, the maximal von Mises stress at the intervertebral disc at the adjacent level was significantly higher in the Tita and PLA-4G models than in the other models. The relative motion at the adjacent level was significantly lower in the PLA-1G and Bloc models than in the other models. Conclusions: The use of biodegradable plates will enhance spinal fusion in the initial stronger period and prevent adjacent segment degeneration in the later, weaker period.
Background: Superior hypogastric plexus block has been advocated as a useful technique for the treatment of cancer related pelvic pain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of neurolytic trans-intervertebrodiscal superior hypogastric plexus block for pelvic cancer pain. Methods: Twenty-eight patients with gynecologic, colorectal or genitourinary cancer who suffered intractable pain were studied. We performed superior hypogastric plexus block by trans-intervertebrodiscal approach at L5/S1 level under the C-arm fluoroscopic guide unilaterally or bilaterally. Ten ml of 100% dehydrated alcohol was injected through each needle. We evaluated the change of visual analog pain score (VAS; 0~100 mm) and daily dose of oral morphine sulphate at the time of pre-block and 7 days after the block. Results: Fourteen patients (50%) had satisfactory pain relief (VAS<30) while five patients (18%) had moderate pain control (VAS 30~60). The remaining nine patients (32%) had mild or little pain relief (VAS>60) and their daily oral morphine doses were above 160 mg. Additional pain control method may be needed for those patients who received high dose of opioid before neurolytic block. Conclusions: We conclude trans-intervertebrodiscal neurolytic superior hypogastric plexus block was effective in relieving pelvic cancer pain. Neurolytic block, earlier stage, may provide better effects for more comfortable life at the end stage for cancer patients.

We have designed a 16bit adder which reduces the power consumption at each level of architecture, logic and transistor. The conventional ELM adder has a major disadvantage which makes glitch in the G cell when the particular input bit patterns are applied, because of the block carry generation signal computed by the input bit pattern. Thus, we propose a low power adder architecture which can automatically transfer each block carry generation signal to the G cell of the last level to avoid glitches for particular input bit patterns at the architecture level. We also use a combination of logic styles which is suitable for low power consumption with static CMOS and low power XOR gate at the logic level. Futhermore, The variable-sized cells are used for reduction of power consumption according to the logic depth of the bit propagation at the transistor level. As a result of HSPICE simulation with $0.6\mu\textrm{m}$ single-poly triple-metal LG CMOS standard process parameter, the proposed adder is superior to the conventional ELM architecture with fixed-sized cell and fully static CMOS by 23.6% in power consumption, 22.6% in power-delay-product, respectively.
A 35-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital with neurologic symptoms after continuous epidural block performed 2 days earlier. She die not have any prior no previous lumbar surgery or experience trauma, intraspinal hemorrhage, infections or other known causative factors to associate with neurologic symptoms. Continuous epidural block is widely used for postoperative pain control. Complications can occur with this block including postduralpuncture headache, epidural abscess and rare cases of arachnoiditis etc. We experienced such a case of spinal arachnoiditis after continuous epidural block. Neurologic examination revealed painful bilateral hypoesthesia below $S_2$ level dermatomes, urinary and fecal incontinence and various degrees of leg weakness. The following day, the patient was noted to have bilateral sacral radiculopathies and lesion on proximal portion of both tibial nerve. CSF study reported: protein 264 mg/dl, sugar 64 mg/dl, WBC $7/mm^3$. L-spine MyeloCTscan results were unremarkable. She was discharged after a month of hospitalization and has regular checkups but her neurologic symptoms show no signs of improvement.
Stellate ganglion block is a selective sympathetic blockade affecting the head and neck, and the upper extemity. It is an important method which has been used most frequently in neuro-pain clinic due to its wide range of indications. The authors attermpted to define the minimal volume of local anesthetic which need for successful stellate ganglion block by using 1% mepivacaine HCl mixed with dye. In 40 heathy volunteers, two different volumes, 3 ml in the group 1 (n=20) and 4 ml in the group 2 (n=20), were injected by an anterior paratracheal technique at the sixth cervical vertebral level. We compared the degree in sympathetic blockade by clinical sings and symptoms and also checked the spread range of dye by plain X-ray. With seven criteria for an effective block. mean score was 5.7 in group 2, while 3.4 in group 1. These results suggest that 4 ml of local anesthetic are adequate for a successful stellate ganglion block.
