Although free-form surfaces can represent smooth shapes with only a few control points contrary to polygonal meshes, graphics hardware does not support surface rendering currently. Since modern programmable graphics pipeline can be used to accelerate various kinds of existing graphics algorithms, this paper presents a method that utilizes the graphics processing unit (GPU) to render blending surfaces with arbitrary topology fast. Surface parameters sampled on the control mesh and geometric data for local surfaces are sent to the graphics pipeline, and then the vertex processor evaluates the surface positions and normals with these data. This method can achieve very high performance rather than CPU-based rendering.

Pathogenic E. coli associated post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) and edema disease are common diseases in commercially-housed weanling pigs. An enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) oral challenge model has been used to mimic the physiological responses observed in commercial conditions. However, an oral challenge procedure has two major limitations: (1) the ETEC cell density is unknown at the point of oral inoculation, and (2) blending ETEC with traditional TSB (trypticase soy broth) is not palatable and hence decreases acceptability by piglets. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to (1) establish a regression equation that can be used for estimation of ETEC concentration in dilution media using the spectrophotometric measurement of cell density; and (2) examine survival of ETEC after blending either with TSB, sweetener or dextrose. A strain of ETEC (serogroup beta-hemolytic E. coli O149; K91; F4; toxins LT, STa, STb) was grown in TSB for 3.5 hours, centrifuged, the supernatant was discarded, and the ETEC pellet was then blended either with TSB (100 mL), sweetener (60 mL TSB + 40 mL fruit flavored concentrate), or dextrose (50 mL TSB + 50 mL dextrose; 0.5g/mL dextrose). Cell density was measured using the colorimetric method and also plated on a 5% sheep blood agar for counting of ETEC colony forming units at 0, 5, 35, 65 and 125 min after blending. The optical density at 600 nm explained 83% of ETEC colony forming units, indicating that the established linear equation (y= 6E+08x - 4E+07, P<0.004) can be used for robust quantification of ETEC cell density in TSB, sweetener and dextrose media. When ETEC was blended with sweetener and dextrose, survival of ETEC was decreased by 45% and 72% within 5 min post-blending. Therefore, further research is required to find out the suitable medium that has potential to improve palatability without compromising survival of ETEC.
This paper describes the effect of DME, biodiesel blended fuels on the macroscopic spray characteristics in a high pressure diesel injection system using Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) method. The BOS method for visualization of impingement evaporation sprays to analyze macroscopic spray properties and evolutionary processes. In this work, the blending ratio of DME in the blended fuel are 0, 50, 100% by weight ratio. In order to investigate the macroscopic impinged spray characteristics under the various injection parameters and blending ratio. In this work, a mini-sac type single-hole nozzle injector with nozzle hole was length 0.7 mm and diameter of 0.3 mm was used. According to the result, the spray area of the collision wall increased as the DME mixing ratio increased, and the evolutionary pattern showed a stepwise increase due to the collision effect of the wall. Also, results of impinged spray area were increased according to increasing injection pressure.

Ball rolling blending is a popular technique for blending between parametric surfaces. The ball rolling blend surface is conceptually a trajectory of a ball rolling between two base sufaces. It is constructed by sweeping a circular arc along a ball contact curve pair. Since a ball rolling blend surfaces does not have a polynomial form like a Bezier surface patch, it is impossible to apply this method directly to a commercial CAD/CAM system. In this paper an algorithm is developed to approximate a ball rolling blend surface into Bezier surface patches. Least square method is applied to obtain proper Bezier surface patches under a given tolerance. The Bezier surface patches have degree three or more and guarantee VC1-continuity.
To develop commercial semi-solid apple baby food, the physicochemical characteristics of apple puree in relation to different preparing methods and the effect of the addition methods of ascorbic acid on browning reaction were investigated. The preparing methods were classified into 3 groups by initial heating treatment: no heating (A), steaming at $120^{\circ}C$ (B), and blancing at $100^{\circ}C$ (C). The viscosity of tested apple puree was $2,600{\sim}5,856\;cp$, and contents of anhydrogalaturonic acid (AGA) and neutral sugar ranged $4.15{\sim}11.92\;mg%$ and $6.18{\sim}10.65\;mg%$, respectively. Among free sugars tested, level of fructose was the highest $(5.43{\sim}8.87%)$, followed by glucose $(2.11{\sim}4.23%)$, sucrose $(1.64{\sim}2.94%)$, in that order. Since small amounts of ascorbic acid were detected $(1.54{\sim}1.83\;mg%)$, it seemed to be lost by heating process in preparing of apple puree. For apple puree A, its lightness was lower and redness was higher than those of apple puree B and C. Its degree of browning of apple puree was so high that sodium ascorbic acid was added as a antibrowning agent. Puree had low sensory score and nutrient quality. The adding methods of ascorbic acid were classified into 4 groups by adding time: dipping, blending (2), heating (3), and blending + heating (4). Considering color and preference evaluation, preparing method B and adding method 2 showed the highest inhibitory activity on apple puree browning and desirable color for retort baby food. After retort sterilization, the viscosity of apple baby food was decreased from 3,477 cp to 2,294 cp, thiamin was destroyed completely, and the contents of riboflavin and ascorbic acid were decreased 41% and 21%, respectively. However, contents of free sugar and free amino acid and sensory parameter were not influenced by retort sterilization. In overall, the preparing method B-adding method 2 was a good processing condition for the retort apple baby food.
Chemometrics using near-infrared (NIR) and Raman spectroscopy have found significant uses in a variety quantitative and qualitative analyses of pharmaceutical products in complex matrixes. Most of the pharmaceutical can be measured directly with little or no sample preparation using these spectroscopic methods. During pharmaceutical manufacturing process, analytical techniques with no or less sample preparation are very critical to confirm the quality. This study showed NIR and Raman spectroscopy with principal component analysis (PCA) was very effective for the blending processing control. It is of utmost importance to evaluate critical parameters related to quality of products during pharmaceutical processing. The blending is confirmed by off-line determination of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) by a conventional method such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and UV spectroscopy. These analytical methods are time-consuming and ineffective for real time control. This study showed the possibility for the determination of blend uniformity end-point of CR tablets with the use of both NIR and Raman spectroscopy. The samples were acquired from six positions during blending processing with U-type blender from 0 to 30 min. Using both collected NIR and Raman spectral data, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to follow the uniformity of blending and finally determine the end-point. The variation of homogeneity of six samples during blending was clearly found and blend uniformity end-point was successfully confirmed in the domains of principal component (PC) scores.

In the near future, many countries, including the Republic of Korea, will face a significant increase in low level radioactive waste (LLW) from nuclear power plant decommissioning. The purpose of this paper is to look at blending as a method for enhancing disposal options for low-level radioactive waste from the decommissioning of nuclear reactors. The 2007 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission strategic assessment of the status of the U.S. LLW program identified the need to move to a risk-informed and performance-based regulatory approach for managing LLW. The strategic assessment identified blending waste of varying radionuclide concentrations as a potential means of enhancing options for LLW disposal. The NRC's position is that concentration averaging or blending can be performed in a way that does not diminish the overall safety of LLW disposal. The revised regulatory requirements for blending LLW are presented in the revised NRC Branch Technical Position for Concentration Averaging and Encapsulation (CA BTP 2015). The changes to the CA BTP that are the most significant for NPP operation, maintenance and decommissioning are reviewed in this paper and a potential application is identified for decommissioning waste in Korea. By far the largest volume of LLW from NPPs will come from decommissioning rather than operation. The large volumes in decommissioning present an opportunity for significant gains in disposal efficiency from blending and concentration averaging. The application of concentration averaging waste from a reactor bio-shield is also presented.
The aim of this study is to develop a simple and rapid field method for the determination of chloride content in tobacco green or cured leaves. To set up a practical process, several factors such as the proper sampling position of each leaf, the size of leaf lamina pieces for blending, the substitution of deionized water fur the extracting solution, 0.1N $HNO_3$, the submerging durations before blending, and the standing times before measuring were studied using flue-cured and burley tobacco with a stable and reproducible Chloride Meter, KRK CL-2Z. From the results, chloride contents of tobacco leaves could be analyzed with the Chloride Meter(CL-2Z) using the suspension of 14 mm diameter leaf disks after soaking in distilled water for 30 min., blending with a mini-blender for 30 seconds. The chloride contents measured in this way showed highly significant correlations with ones by the conventional potentiometric method using an ion meter-chloride electrode and $AgNO_3$ titration. In our method, the procedures such as drying, powdering and weighing samples, and using chemical reagents for extraction (0.1N $HNO_3$) and titration(0.028N $AgNO_3$) could be eliminated. These results suggest that the newly constructed method using the Chloride Meter is more efficient to determine the chloride content of tobacco leave in comparison with the one by the Ion $Meter:AgNO_3$ titration.
