  • In this study, to test the performance of concrete used as a concrete admixture as a recycling method of CGS, gypsum was mixed and the chloride ion penetration resistance test of CGS and BFS substituted concrete was conducted. As a result, it was found that without gypsum type test specimen, the CGS sustituted test specimens had lower chloride ion penetration resistance than the BFS substituted specimens. When gypsum was added, it was confirmed that the chloride ion penetration resistance was poor regardless of the type of admixture. In addition, it was confirmed that both admixtures were less resistant to chloride ion penetration than OPC, regardless of the presence of gypsum. However, considering the uneven quality variation of coal, which greatly affects the quality of CGS, further research is needed.

  • The numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate the behavior of slab-column connection subjected to blast loads using LS-DYNA. The typical form of slab-interior column connection for analysis was considered as a reference specimen and the drop panel slab-interior column was designed to verify the effects of drop panel. The slab-column connections, which were composed of interior, edge and corner column, were additionally analyzed to compare their confinement effects of specimens. Analysis results were contained the failure shape of connection, behavior of member and so on. From the results, the blast-resistant capacities of slab-column connection would be enhanced by reinforcing the drop panel. In addition, the performance of connections could be improved, when the confinement effects were enhanced.

  • Rates of lesion development over time and disease gradients over distance for blast disease on the two rice varieties, Brazos and M-20 1 were significantly affected by two different cultural conditions, upland and flooded conditions. Flooding rice field plots lowered the rates of lesion increase and flattened the disease gradients for both varieties. Despite absence of statistically significant differences in the rate of lesion increase between four sampled distances from infection focus, rate of lesion development tended to be slightly greater as distance from the infection focus increases. Rate of lesion increase was greater with more susceptible variety M-201 than with Brazos. Disease gradient was steeper for M-201 than for Brazos. As blast disease progressed, disease gradients became flattened regardless of variety due to the infections originated from secondary foci. Between two empirical disease gradient models examined, Kiyosawa & Shiyomi model was fitted better over Gregory model. Rates of blast isopath movement under upland conditions were calculated as approximately 0.2m/day and 0.4 m/day for Brazos and M-201, respectively. The results in this study suggest that differences in varietal resistance to blast could be detected by measuring disease gradient as efficiently as by measuring infection rate.

  • Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) exhibits enhanced strength and superior energy dissipation capacity compared to normal concrete, and it can also reduce crack propagation and fragmentation of concrete even when subjected to blast loads. In this study, the parameters defining failure surface and damage function of the K&C concrete nonlinear model were proposed to be applied for the properties of SFRC in LS-DYNA. Single element analysis has been conducted to validate the proposed parameters in the K&C model, which provided very close simulations on the compressive behavior of SFRC. In addition, blast analysis was performed on SFRC columns with different volume fractions of steel fibers, and the blast resistance of SFRC columns was quantitatively analyzed with Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency (KOSHA) guidelines.

  • To explore the distribution and the resistance reaction of rice blast pathogens that may occur in North Korea, rice blast pathogens in the North Korean border regions of Dandong and Yeon-gil in China and the North Korean border region of Cheorwon in South Korea were analyzed. In addition, comparative analysis was conducted with rice blast pathogen in Suwon and Jeonju, inland regions of South Korea. Resistance reactions above average were observed in monogenic rice lines (IRBLzt-T, IRBL9-W, IRBL20-IR24, and IRBLta-CP1) in Jeonju, Suwon, and Cheorwon from 2018 to 2020. In Dandong and Yeon-gil, the monogenic lines IRBLz5-CA, IRBL12-M, and IRBL19-A consistently showed resistance reactions for three years. Notably, IRBL19-A exhibited strong resistance. Race distribution analysis in South Korea indicated a shift from KI to KJ dominance from 2018 to 2020, while in the North Korean border regions of Dandong and Yeon-gil, the KI race was dominant in 2021 and 2022. The race distribution of rice blast pathogens in China's North Korean border regions differed significantly from that in South Korea.

  • Six rice cultivars showing various types of resistance or susceptibility to Pyricularia oryzae in the field were used to study the relationship between susceptibility and contents of carbohydrates, amino acids and phenolics at different plant maturities and leaf ages under controlled environmental conditions. No consistent differences between the susceptible cultivars and adult-plant-resistant cultivars were found in terms of the contents of individual carbohydrates, total amino acids and phenolics in rice leaves throughout the plant development. Only the adult-plant-resistant cultivar Dobong had lower contents of inositol throughout the plant development than the other cultivars. The amounts of sucrose, inositol, glucose, and fructose increased in all tested cultivars at eight leaf stage than those at five leaf stage, but slightly decreased at twelve leaf stage. In contrast, total amino acids and phenolics gradually decreased during plant development. With increasing age of rice leaves, the amounts of total soluble amino acids and phenolics gradually increased in healthy fifth leaf tissues, although there were no significant differences between the cultivars. In particular, a high level of phenolics existed in old fifth leaves of the cultivar Dobong. These results suggest that increased resistance to blast of matured rice plants and old leaves may be the two different phenomina derived from the physiological changes occurring during plant development and leaf senescence, probably functioning differently in P. oryzae development.

  • The 13 major blast resistance(R) genes against Magnaporthe grisea were screened in a number of Korean rice varieties using molecular markers. Of the 98 rice varieties tested, 28 were found to contain the Pia gene originating from Japanese japonica rice genotypes. The Pib gene from BL1 and BL7 was incorporated into 39 Korean japonica varieties, whereas this same gene from the IRRI-bred indica varieties was detected in all Tongil-type varieties. We also found that 17 of the japonica varieties contained the Pii gene. The Pii gene in Korean rice varieties originates from the Korean japonica variety Nongbaeg, and Japanese japonica varieties Hitomebore, Inabawase, and Todorokiwase. The Pi5 gene, which clusters with Pii on chromosome 9, was identified only in Taebaeg. Thirty-four varieties were found to contain alleles of the resistance gene Pita or Pita-2. The Pita gene in japonica varieties was found to be inherited from the Japanese japonica genotype Shimokita, and the Pita-2 gene was from Fuji280 and Sadominori. Seventeen japonica and one Tongil-type varieties contained the Piz gene, which in the japonica varieties originates from Fukuhikari and 54BC-68. The Piz-t gene contained in three Tongil-type varieties was derived from IRRI-bred indica rice varieties. The Pi9(t) gene locus that is present in Korean japonica and Tongil-type varieties was not inherited from the original Pi9 gene from wild rice Oryza minuta. The Pik-multiple allele genes Pik, Pik-m, and Pik-p were identified in 24 of the varieties tested. In addition, the Pit gene inherited from the indica rice K59 strain was not found in any of the Korean japonica or Tongil-type varieties tested.

  • Rice blast is the most serious disease of rice due to its harmfulness and its world wide distribution. $Magnaporthe$ $grisea$ is the cause of rice blast disease and destroys rice enough to feed several tens of millions of people each year. Fungicides are commonly used to control rice blast. But $M.$ $grisea$ acquires resistance to chemical treatments by genetic mutations. 2-Phenylimino-1,3-thiazolines were proposed as a novel class of fungicides against $M.$ $grisea$ in the previous study. To develop compounds with a higher biological activity, a new series of 2-phenylimino-1,3-thiazolines was synthesized and its fungicidal activity was determined against $M.$ $grisea$. The QSAR analysis was carried out on a series of 2-phenylimino-1,3-thiazolines. The QSAR results showed the dependence of fungicidal activity on the structural and physicochemical features of 2-phenylimino-1,3-thiazolines. Our results could be used as guidelines for the study of the mode of action and further design of optimal fungicides.

  • When plants are infected by plant pathogens, typical disease symptom termed lesion, appears in compatible interaction. Whereas, in incompatible interactions, only small speck of lesions are visible on the leaf surfaces. Hypersensitive response (HR) of plant which is the result of infection by incompatible pathogens, is a well known defense response inducing rapid cell death resulting in complete resistance. However, some rice mutants show spontaneous disease symptoms during the growth stages without interaction with pathogens. We investigated the spontaneous cell death mutant called Blast Lesion Mimic(BLM) generated by EMS mutation, on the relationship with the hypersensitive response as well as resistant characteristics. Accumulation of phenolic compounds were detected around the lesions as lesions develop on leaf surface. Activation of PR gene was detected before the lesion appeared, and that result indicates the defense-related response are started earlier than lesion formation. The BLM mutant showed resistant response to inoculation of Magnaporthe grisea KJ201 with which the wild type Hwacheong is totally susceptible. Informations on the formation of spontaneous lesions and detail analysis of lesion mimic mutants and related genes are very limited to date. It is really important to understand the phenomenon of the defense-related lesion formation for developing resistant cultivar for rice blast pathogens
