  • In this study, operational vibration experiment and analysis have been conducted for the 4-blade small vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) including the effect of tower elastic behavior. Computational structural dynamics analysis method is applied to obtain Campbell diagram for the VAWT with elastic tower. An open type wind-tunnel is used to change and keep the wind velocity during the ground test. Equivalent reduced elastic tower is supported to the VAWT so that the elastic stiffness effect of the tower can be reflected to the present vibration experiment. Various excitation sources with aerodynamic forces are considered and the dominant operating vibration phenomena are physically investigated in detail.

  • The flow field measurements were conducted on the planes between impeller blades, and the gap between the impeller and turbine blades under speed ratio of 0.4. The study showed that high velocity regions move from locations near the suction surface of the impeller to the pressure blade, shroud corner as flow progresses from the mid-chord of impeller passage to exit and out into the gap region. Planes 3 through 5 also showed flow reversal occurring in the area near the shell surface and progress far into the impeller passage from the impeller passage exit, near shell surface. This affected the converter efficiency negatively. This study would aid in the construction of higher accuracy CFD models of this complex turbomachinery device.

  • The paper presents a power control algorithm for a full pitch-controlled wind power system. The design of a pitch controller, in general, is performed by linearizing the torque in the vicinity of a operating point assuming the tip speed ratio is constant. For power control, however, the tip speed ratio is no longer a constant. In this study, a reference pitch model is derived in terms of a wind speed, angular velocity, and pitch angle. The reference pitch model is used to design a controller without linearizing the non-linear torque model of the blade. The validity of the algorithm is demonstrated with the results produced through sets of simulation.

  • In this study, one dimensional aerodynamic and structural study of a partial admission turbo pump turbine was performed. A turbine consists of a nozzle, rotor, outlet guide vanes. The aerodynamic characteristics of each component was derived from the governing equation and validated from the CFD calculations. One-dimensional basic design such as velocity triangles was conducted from the mean line analysis and modified from the 2-D and 3-D CFD analysis. The blade profile was determined by the CFD optimization. The thermal stress analysis and structural analysis are needed to be studied in the next design stage.

  • In this study, a preliminary design method of the axial fan was systematically established based on the two-dimensional cascade theory. Flow deviation, lift coefficient, distribution of velocity and pressure coefficient on blade surfaces were predicted by an inviscid flow theory of Martensen method, which was also applied to select an airfoil for required performance in the present design process. The aerodynamic performance of designed blades can be predicted quickly and reasonably by using the through-flow calculation method in the preliminary design process. It would be recommendable to adopt three-dimensional viscous flow calculation at the final design refinement stage.

  • For the optimal design of an automotive blower system, effects of the scroll cut-off starting angle, the clearance between blade tip and bellmouth, and the scroll expansion angle on the performance of sirocco fan are investigated experimentally. Best performance is achieved at fan exposure ratio $\Deltae/r_c$,/TEX> =1.0, and clearance ratio $\DeltaeC/C=0.62. Flow characteristics inside sirocco fan are also studied by using LDV. Flow patterns in the inside of fan can be classified into three regions. Velocity vector has the same direction as rotational direction of fan at 0~$120^{\circ}$, toward the fan blades at 150~$180^{\circ}$, and opposite direction at 210~$330^{\circ}$. Turbulent intensity is relatively high near the cut-off edge in the scroll housing.

  • The objective of the present study was to identify ventilation problems, and also to suggest new axial fan systems for the improvement of IAQ in the underground parking lots. Numerical results for air mean-velocity, local mean age, and sound power level are presented along with some of fan angles. The results showed the influence of airflow patterns on the fan performances installed in the underground parking lots. Discharge air volume is increased with the angle of the blade. And also, the main factors affecting the noise of the ventilation fan was found to be a rotational speed.

  • In this paper, Based on Two-dimensional Flow Theory, adopting quasi-orthogonal method and point-by-point integration method to design the impeller of the low specific speed centrifugal pump by code, and using RANS (Reynolds Averaged N-S) Equation with a standard k-${\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model and log-law wall function to solve 3D turbulent flow field in the impeller of the low specific speed pump. An analysis of the influences of the blade profile on velocity distributions, pressure distributions and pump performance and the investigation of the flow regulation pattern in the impeller of the centrifugal pump are presented. And the result shows that this method can be used as a new way in low speed centrifugal pump impeller design.

  • To examine the influence of unsteady wake on the flow and heat transfer characteristics, an experiment has been conducted in a four-vane linear cascade. Flow and heat transfer measurements are made for the inlet Reynolds number of 66000(based on chord length and free-stream velocity). Turbulent intensity and stress were measured using hot wire anemometer, and to measure the convective heat transfer coefficients on the blade surfaces liquid crystal/gold film Intrex technique was used. The disturbance by the unsteady wake is characterized by the unresolved unsteadiness. The unsteady wake enhances the turbulent motion of flow in the cascade passage. It also promotes the boundary layer development and transition. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the suction surface increase with increasing unresolved unsteadiness.

  • This paper presents a quasi-three-dimensional calculation method considered a spanwise mixing effect in a diagonal flow impeller. The effect of this spanwise mixing caused by spanwise distribution of blade loading is evaluated by a secondary flow theory. In order to verify the validity of this method, it is applied to the analysis of a diagonal flow fan designed under a vortex type of constant circumferential velocity and that of a free vortex. The comparison of the calculated result with experimental data shows a good agreement except the regions near the casing where the flow field is affected by the tip leakage flow.
