As a high specific speed pump, the contra-rotating axial flow pump with two rotors rotating reversely has been proved with higher hydraulic and cavitation performance, while in our previous researches, the potential interaction between two blade rows was distinctly observed for our prototype rotors designed with equal rotational speed for both front and rear rotors. Based on the theoretical and experimental evidences, a rotational speed optimization methodology was proposed and applied in the design of a new combination of contra-rotating rotors, primarily in expectation of the optimized blade pressure distributions as well as pertinently improved hydraulic performances including cavitation performance. In the present study, given one stationary and two rotating frames in the contra-rotating rotors case, a pressure measurement concept taking account of the revolutions of both front and rear rotors simultaneously was adopted. The casing wall pressure data sampled in time domain was successfully transferred into space domain, by which the ensemble averaged blade-to-blade pressure distributions at the blade tip of two contra-rotating rotors under different operation conditions were studied. It could be seen that the rotor pair with the optimized rotational speed combination as well as work division, shows more reasonable blade-to-blade pressure distribution and well weakened potential interaction. Moreover, combining the loading curves estimated by the measured casing wall pressure, the cavitation performance of the rotor pairs with new rotational speed combination were proved to be superior to those of the prototype pairs.
The windshield wiper consists of 4 parts: a blade, an arm, a linkage and a motor. The wiper blade makes contact with the windshield and is designed to be operated normally at an angle of 30~50 degrees to the front glass. If the contact pressure between the wiper blade and windshield surface is too high, noise and wear of the rubber will result. On the other hand, if the contact pressure is too low, the performance will do badly, since foreign substances such as dust and stains will not be removed well. The pressure and friction of the wiper blade has a great influence on its effectiveness in cleaning the front window. This is due to the contact of the rubber with the window. This paper presents the dynamic analysis method to estimate the performance of the flat type blade of the wiper system. The blade has a nonlinear characteristic since the rubber is an incompressible hyper-elastic and visco-elastic material. Thus, Structural dynamic analysis using a complex contact model for the blade is performed to find the characteristics of the blade. The flexible multi-body dynamic model is verified by the comparison between test and analysis result. Also, the optimization using the central composite design table is performed.
In order to evaluate variation of fatigue data of the LP steam turbine blade steel, it is important to estimate P - S - N curves to accurately define the probability distributions. In this study, new procedure is introduced to determine the expression of P - S - N curves. For this purpose, 3-parameter Weibull distribution was found to be most appropriate among assumed distributions when the probability distributions of the fatigue life were examined by the proposed analysis. Furthermore, parameter estimation for P - S - N curves was performed using various optimization to maximize the correlation coefficient. As a result of this, sequential linear programing method is used for estimation of P - S - N curves.
The performance and noise characteristics of the design parameters of a cross-flow fan are investigated by computational methods. The incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations in moving coordinates are time-accurately solved for obtaining the pressure fluctuations due to the aerodynamic interactions between the impeller blades and the stabilizer, and sound pressure is then computed by the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. Design parameters of the cross-flow fan include blade setting angle, exit-diffusion angle, and stabilizer installation angle. Also, an optimization of the aforementioned design parameters has been peformed using the Taguchi method.
In a double-passage cascade apparatus, only two blades are installed in order to increase the accuracy of experimental result by applying bigger blade than the size of multi-blades on the same apparatus. However, this causes difficulties to make correct periodic condition. In this study, sidewalls are designed to meet periodic condition without removing the operating fluid or adjusting tail boards. Surface Mach number on the blade surface is applied to a responsible variable, and 12 design variables which are related with sidewall profile control are selected. A gradient based optimization is adopted for wall design and CFX-11 is used for the internal flow computation. The computed result shows that it could obtain the same flow structure by modifying only the sidewalls of the double-passage cascade apparatus.

This paper reports on an investigation (using RSM with commercial CFD software) of the performance characteristics of the impeller in a centrifugal pump. Geometric parameters of vane plane development were defined with the meridional shape and frontal view of the impeller. The parameters are focused on the blade-angle distributions through the impeller in a fixed meridional geometry. For screening, a $2^k$ factorial design has been used to identify the important design parameters. The objective functions are defined as the total head rise and the total efficiency at the design flow-rate. From the $2^k$ factorial design results, it is found that the incidence angles and the exit blade angle are the most important parameters influencing the performance of the pump.
In turbomachinery rotor, there are small differences in the structural and/or geometrical properties of individual blades, which are referred to as blade mistuning. Mistuning effects of the forced response of bladed disks can be extremely large as often reported in many studies. In this paper, the pattern optimization of intentional mistuning for bladed disks considering with damping and coupling effect is the focus of the present investigation. More specifically, the class of intentionally mistuned disks considered here is limited, for cost reasons, to arrangements of two types of blades (A and B, say) and Genetic Algorithm is used to optimize the arrangement of these blades around the disk to reduce the forced response of blade with different damping and coupling stiffness.
Response surface method is employed in optimizing the acoustic performance of automotive engine-cooling axial fans. The effects of modifications in blade geometry on noise reduction are investigated. Taking the far-field noise level as the objective, a quadratic response surface is constructed utilizing D-Optimality condition as the candidate-points selection criteria. It is shown that the quadratic model exhibits an excellent fitting capability resulting in the blade design with low far-field noise level.
The aerodynamic loads at the blade hub and the drive shaft for 1MW horizontal axis wind turbine are calculated numerically. The geometric shape of the blade such as chord length and twist angle can be obtained fran the aerodynamic optimization procedure. Various airfoil data, that is thick airfoils at hub side and thin airfoils at tip side, are distributed along the spanwise direction of the rotor blade. Under the wind data fulfilling design load cases based on the IEC61400-1, all of the shear forces, bending moments at the hub and the low speed shaft of the drive train are obtained by using the FAST code. It shows that shear forces and bending moments have a periodic. trend. These oscillating aerodynamic loads will lead to the fatigue problem at both of the hub and drive train From the load analysis the maximum shear forces and bending moments are generated when wind turbine generator system operates in the case of the extreme speed wind condition.

The pump-turbine impeller is the key component of pumped storage power plant. Current design methods of pump-turbine impeller are private and protected from public viewing. Generally, the design proceeds in two steps: the initial hydraulic design and optimization design to achieve a balanced performance between pump mode and turbine mode. In this study, the 3D inverse design method is used for the initial hydraulic impeller design. However, due to the special demand of high performance in both pump and reverse mode, the design method is insufficient. This study is carried out by modifying the geometrical parameters of the blade which have great influence and need special consideration in obtaining the high performance on the both modes, such as blade shape type at low pressure side (inlet of pump mode, outlet of turbine mode) and the blade lean at blade high pressure side (outlet of pump mode, inlet of turbine mode). The influence of the geometrical parameters on the performance characteristic is evaluated by CFD analysis which presents the efficiency and internal flow results. After these investigations of the geometrical parameters, the criteria of designing pump-turbine impeller blade low and high sides shape is achieved.
