  • The purpose of this study is to examine color characteristics and color changes of the fashion collections through 1990s, and to provide the efficient color information for color planning upon fashion themes. For this research, a total of 30,084 colors were collected from Paris, Milan, London, New York Collections in 1990s. Those colors were first measured by the Pantone Textile Color Specifier and COS Color System and spectrophotometer(color eye 580). These measured color values $L^{\ast}a^{\ast}b^{\ast}$of CIE were converted into H V/C of Munsell System, and 12 tones of PCCS with 5 achromatic colors. The characteristics of collected colors were analyzed in general and by place, season and year. The results of the study are as follows : First, the hues of purple blue, yellow red, red, yellow and the tones of grayish, pale, white, black, dark grayish, dull, light grayish appeared mostly. Yellow was shown quite frequently in spring/summer while purple, purple blue, red and yellow red in fall/winter. White, pale, light, light grayish and light gray were shown more frequently in spring/summer while Black, dark grayish, grayish, dark gray and dark in fall/winter. Second, the characteristics of colors by 4 representative places were similar to the general characteristics of colors in 1990's. Third, There were distributed widely Red, Yellow Red, Yellow in the early 1990s, Green Yellow, Green, Blue Green in the mid of 1990s, and Purple Blue, Purple in the late of 1990s. The distribution range of chromatic colors showed wide in both of the early of 1990s and the mid of 1990s for a while, and achromatic colors of grayish, gray and black appeared mostly in the late of 1900s.

  • In this paper, we discuss a simple and straightforward binarization procedure which can generate black/white comics from the video frame image. Generally, the region of human's skin is colored white or light gray, while the dark region is filled with the irregular but regular patterns like hatching in most of the black/white comics. Note that it is not enough for simple threshold method to perform this work. Our procedure is decoupled into four processes. First, we use bilateral filter to suppress noise color variation and reserve boundaries. Then, we perform mean-shift segmentation for each similar colored pixels to be clustered. Third, the clustered regions are merged and extended by our region extension algorithm considering each color of their regions. Finally, we decide which pixels are on or off using by our dynamic binarization method based on the HSV color model. Our novel black/white cartooning procedure was so successful to render comic cuts from a well-known cinema in a resonable time and manual intervention.

  • This research studied the most suitable synthesis condition of mineral pigments of black spinel, which have a stable chromogenic characteristic also ata high temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ (it is not currently producedin the country) to meet not only functionality of ceramics but also an individual's aesthetic. It was synthesized by the plastic synthetic method on the basis of basic formation of $Fe_2O_3,\;Cr_2O_3$, Quartz, Kaolin, CoO, $MnO_2$, and plasticity was made at $1500^{\circ}C,\;1550^{\circ}C,\;1600^{\circ}C,\;1650^{\circ}C$. We researched the most suitable condition of plasticity and composition which make crystallization of spinel system and chromogenic characteristic close to black in every composition. And for the experiment of application to Zirconia, after adding synthesized pigments to Zirconia and plasticizing them, we analyzed their color and property of matters. The most suitable synthesis conditions of mineral pigments of black spinel system require composition of $Fe_2O_3-32.01%,\;Cr_2O_3-30.47%$, Quartz-9.66%, Kaolin-18.53%, CoO-3.71%, $MnO_2-5.62%$ and condition of plasticity kept for 1 h at $1600^{\circ}C$. When we added pigments synthesized in this way to Zirconia with 5 wt% and plasticized them at $1410^{\circ}C$, the result was that the degree of $strength-32.6kgf/mm^2$, absorptance-0.108%, $luminosity-L^*:37.54,\;color-a^*:1.31,\;b^*:2.61$ and their use suited for artificial jewelry or decoration Zirconia goods.

  • Black-dyed PET fabrics were sputtered with stainless steel through DC-magnetron type device to investigate the possibility of coloration effect, and then considered the morphological structure and physical characteristics such as water permeation ability and washing fastness. Change in color was estimated on the basis of CIELAB color system. The color coordination of metal plated PET was shifted to yellow-red from red-blue. Colour difference$({\Delta}E^*)$ was increased by sputtering conditions with increasing ion current and treatment time. Especially, $Lightness(L^*)$ value of PET was remarkably increased by sputtering, whereas $Chroma(C^*)$ increased gradually. From SEM analysis, rough and uneven craters were found and thickened on the fiber surfaces with longer sputtering time. And washing fastness was a little poor and absorption ability slightly decreased. There were little changes of breaking load and breaking extension. It was evident that observed uneven craters in the plated thin layer resulted in the colour change of PET fabrics by sputtering treatments.

  • The alkali treated and black dyed PET fabrics were sputter etched under Ar gas atmosphere. The color depth of PET fabrics were increased with sputter etching time only under some limits of discharge power. And above that limits of discharge power the color depth of PET fabrics was decreased by increasing discharge power and treatment time. Minute cracks were made by sputter etching in the whole surface of fabrics to the direction of perpendicular to the longitudinal side of yarns. The fineness and density of minute crack were increased with lowering discharge power. And the size of crack was far smaller than that of microcrater which was obtained by alkali treatment. It is considered that the increase of color depth is related to the minute crack. The water permeation time of sputter etched fabrics was increased with increasing discharge power and treating time. The increase of color depth attained by sputter etching was fully kept through repeated laundering.

  • We investigated treatments for the browning prevention of black carrot extracts and determined the characteristics and qualities of jelly supplemented with black carrot extract. Ascorbic acid, citric acid, and NaCl were added to black carrot extract and changes in color, texture, and anthocyanin content were evaluated. Changes were also determined and a sensory evaluation was performed for jelly supplemented with black carrot extract. The addition of 0.15 and 0.20% ascorbic acid prevented the browning of black carrot extracts and decreased anthocyanin content during the storage period. However, citric acid did not have a preventative effect, despite decreasing the pH below 5.0. Similar to results on the extract, 0.15% ascorbic acid maintained a reddish-violet color in jelly supplemented with black carrot extract by lowering browning during the storage period. Jelly supplemented with 0.15% ascorbic acid had an increased elasticity, gumminess, and chewiness, but jelly supplemented with 0.15% ascorbic acid+0.05% NaCl had a lowered hardness compared with the control during the storage period. In a sensory evaluation, the overall preference, in descending order, was: 0.15% ascorbic acid+0.05% NaCl > 0.15% ascorbic acid > control. In conclusion, 0.15~0.20% ascorbic acid prevented the browning of black carrot extract and inhibited a decrease in anthocyanin content. Jelly supplemented with black carrot extract and 0.15% ascorbic acid+0.05% NaCl were optimal for producing a soft jelly texture.

  • The main objective of this research was to understand the characteristics of separation color coordination of contemporary female fashion through the analysis of 'pre-a-porter Collections' of four collections (i. e. cities) - Paris, Milan, New York, London - from the periods of 2004 S/S to 2008/9 A/W. The data collection of 265 was done by reviewing 'pre-a-porter Collections' magazine and total 265 observations were made. Statistical analysis of frequency and also qualitative interpretation of separation color coordination characteristics were completed. The main findings were; (1) In separation color coordination of contemporary women's fashion collections, there were three main types of color scheme which were classified into seven detailed categories of color combination. First was the achromatic color & one chromatic separation color scheme which was classified into four categories of - black & white, black & grey, white & grey, and grey & grey - color combination. Second was the chromatic colors & one achromatic separation color scheme which classified into two categories of achromatic & chromatic color & one achromatic separation color combination, and chromatic colors & one achromatic separation color combination. Third was chromatic colors and one chromatic separation color combination. (2) The achromatic colors and one chromatic separation color scheme showed two phases of reinforcing the strong and modern image, or softening the hard and dull image of achromatic color combination. In color schemes which used more than two chromatic colors, the separation color frequently converted the tedious and monotonous fashion image, which caused by identical or similarity in color or tone harmony, into more attractive and interesting. (3) In conclusion, through the various use and coordination of various color schemes, color harmony and separation colors, the separation color coordination in contemporary female fashion has been suggested the effective way of color combination which can lead the visual pleasure and the vitality along with the unity and the harmony. This characteristics can create various images and visual diversity for fashion. The types and the use of color scheme and separation color showed different trends in four collections.

  • Guanine nucleotide-binding protein subunit alpha-s ($Gn{\alpha}s$) is a small subunit of the G protein-couple signaling pathway, which is involved in the formation of coat color. The expression level and distribution of $Gn{\alpha}s$ were detected by quantitative real-time-polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), western blot, and immunohistochemistry to investigate the underlying mechanisms of coat color in white and black skin tissues of mice. qPCR and western blot results suggested that $Gn{\alpha}s$ was expressed at significantly higher levels in black mice compared with that of white mice, and transcripts and protein possessed the same expression in both colors. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated $Gn{\alpha}s$ staining in the root sheath and dermal papilla in hair follicle of mice skins. The results indicated that the $Gn{\alpha}s$ gene was expressed in both white and black skin tissues, and the expression level of $Gn{\alpha}s$ in the two types of color was different. Therefore, $Gn{\alpha}s$ may be involved in the coat color formation in mice.

  • Color is one of the perch properties. This study was conducted to investigate the general behaviors and perching behaviors in laying hens under different group size (stocking density), and to understand the perch color (black, white or brown) preference of hens during the night. A total of 390 Hyline Brown laying hens was used, and randomly allocated to three treatments: individual group (G1), group of four hens (G4), and group of eight hens (G8), respectively. There were 30 replicates in each group. The hens in G1, G4 and G8 groups were put into the test cages in which three colored perches were simultaneously provided and allowed for four days of habituation in the new cages. Hens behaviors were recorded using cameras with infrared light sources for the following periods: 8:00 to 10:00; 14:00 to 16:00; 19:00 to 21:00; 23:30 to 0:30 on the fifth day after transferring the birds into the test cages. The behaviors of hens in every time period were collected and analyzed, and hens positions on the test perches during mid-night were recorded. The results showed that, group size (stocking density) had significant effect on most of the general behaviors of laying hens except exploring behavior. There were great differences in most of the general behaviors during different time periods. In the preference test of perch color during night, the hens showed no clear preference for white, black or brown perches. For perching behaviors, perching time and frequency of transferring from one perch to another was higher on black perches than on white or brown perches in individual groups. In G4 groups, the hens spent more time on white perches during daytime and more frequent transferring during night compared with black or brown perches. The frequency of jumping upon and down from white perches was higher in G8 groups. It can be concluded that although the group sizes in the cage significantly affected most of the general behaviors, we found that no preference of perch color was shown by the caged laying hens in the different group sizes tested in this study.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the melanogenesis associated transcription factor (MITF) and dopachrome tautomerase (DCT) genes on plumage coloration in Asian native duck breeds. MITF encodes a protein for microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, which regulates the development and function of melanocytes for pigmentation of skin, hair, and eyes. Among the tyrosinase-related family genes, DCT is a pigment cell-specific gene that plays important roles in the melanin synthesis pathway and the expression of skin, feather, and retina color. Methods: Five Asian duck varieties (black Korean native, white Korean native, commercial Peking, Nageswari, and Bangladeshi Deshi white ducks) were investigated to examine the polymorphisms associated with plumage colors. Among previously identified SNPs, three synonymous SNPs and one indel of MITF and nine SNPs in exon regions of DCT were genotyped. The allele frequencies for SNPs of the black and white plumage color populations were estimated and Fisher's exact test was conducted to assess the association between the allele frequencies of these two populations. Results: Two synonymous SNPs (c.114T>G and c.147T>C) and a 14-bp indel (GCTGCAAAC AGATG) in intron 7 of MITF were significantly associated with the black- and white-colored breeds (p<0.001). One non-synonymous SNP [c.938A>G (p.His313Arg)] in DCT, was highly significantly associated (p<0.001) and a synonymous SNP (c.753A>G) was significantly associated (p<0.05) with black and white color plumage in the studied duck populations. Conclusion: The results of this study provide a basis for further investigations of the associations between polymorphisms and plumage color phenotypes in Asian duck breeds.
