  • Black carbon (BC), a kind of high surface area carbonaceous material (HSACM), was isolated from Andong lake sediment. Sorption and desorption kinetics of naphthalene (Naph) and phenanthrene (Phen) in organic carbon (OC) and BC in the Andong lake sediment were investigated. Several kinetic models such as one-site mass transfer model (OSMTM), two-compartment first-order kinetic model (TCFOKM), and a newly proposed modified two-compartment first-order kinetic model (MTCFOKM) were used to describe the sorption and desorption kinetics. The MTCFOKM was the best fitting model. The MTCFOKM for sorption kinetics showed that i) the sorbed amounts of PAHs onto BC were higher than those onto OC, consistent with BET surface area; ii) the equilibration time for sorption onto BC was longer than those onto OC due to smaller size of micropore ($11.67{\AA}$) of BC than OC ($38.18{\AA}$); iii) initial sorption velocity of BC was higher than OC; and iv) the slow sorption velocity in BC caused the later equilibrium time than OC even though the fast sorption velocity was early completed in both BC and OC. The MTCFOKM also described the desorption of PAHs from the OC and BC well. After desorption, the remaining fractions of PAHs in BC were higher than those in OC due to stronger PAHs-BC binding. The remaining fractions increased with aging for both BC and OC.

  • Soil organic matter (OM) is well documented for its capacity to retain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and thus is important in dictating the environmental partitioning of POPs between media such as air, water, and soil. Black carbon (BC) is a small component of OM and exhibitt a 10$\sim$100 times greater sorption capacity of POPs than humified OM. Furthermore, due to the inherent long environmental life time of BC, a result of its resistance to physical and biological degradation, POPs can continue to accumulate in BC over a long period of time. The unique properties of BC have been of particular interest over the last 30 years and have resulted in broad research being conducted into its effects of POP cycling in atmospheric, oceanographic and soil matrices. The results of such studies have proved valuable In providing new research initiatives into the role of BC in the cycling of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) as well as giving further insight into the long range atmospheric transport (LRAT) potential and subsequent risk assessment criteria for persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In this report, we introduce a novel study examining the relationships between BC and OM with respect to their POP sorption capacity and discuss the role of BC in influencing the environmental regulation of organic pollutants.

  • A filter-based optical technique is one of the representative ways for the measurement and quantification of black carbon (BC). Since the filter-based technique adopts a simple principle, it is easy to put into practical use and instrumental products have already been commercialized. In this study, however, the absorption coefficients of BC after the correction process was estimated to be approximately 3 times lower than those before the correction process. In addition, the difference between before and after corrections was also evident for the trend of increasing and decreasing absorption coefficient. When BC concentration is low, uncertainty may increase regardless of corrections due to the artifacts of filter. In this sense, techniques without using a filter are required, and uncertainties will be minimized if these techniques are used to further complement the filter-based black carbon measurements. Finally, this study is believed to help understand the uncertainty and correction of filter-based black carbon measurements.

  • Given the increasing interest in air pollution, several technologies to measure black carbon (BC) aerosol particles have been developed. As most BC aerosol particles are smaller than 1 ㎛, it is necessary to pre-separate the particles by size before a BC measuring instrument samples the aerosol particles. In this study, a miniature cyclone separator for portable BC measuring instruments was developed. A numerical approach was used to design the miniature cyclone separator with operating flow rates of 50, 100, or 150 mLPM, and then a prototype cyclone separator was manufactured for experimental validation. The numerical results of the cut-off size and pressure drop of the miniature cyclone separator agreed well with the experimental data. The cut-off sizes of the miniature cyclone separator were determined to be 2.9, 0.94, and 0.63 ㎛ for operating flow rates of 50, 100, and 150 mLPM, respectively. Thus, the miniature cyclone separator is suitable for use as a sampling inlet for the portable black carbon measuring instrument to sample BC aerosol or PM2.5 aerosol.

  • $PM_{2.5}$ black carbon (BC) concentrations were measured to investigate the filter spot loading effect in raw BC data at 5-minute time-based resolution using a single-wavelength aethalometer at a Gwangju site. Also the elemental carbon (EC) concentrations from 24-hr integrated filter-based measurements of $PM_{2.5}$ particles were determined to compare with the loading compensated BC values. Close examination of the time-series BC data showed clearly the "gaps" when the filter tape advances, suggesting the correction of raw BC data. Therefore, we calculated the average BC concentration in each range of attenuation (ATN) to decide if there was (or was not) an effect on the aethalometer data according to the loading of the filter spot. A consistent decrease of average BC concentration was found with increasing ATN values for every month, suggesting there was a consistent "spot loading effect" in the raw BC data. The loading compensated BC concentration according to a simple compensation model with loading effect was 1.01~1.15 times greater than the raw BC data. The 24-hr average concentration of EC observed during summer sampling period was about 3% higher than the original 24-hr average BC value and 2% lower than the loading compensated BC concentration.

  • The physico-chemical characteristics and nanostructure of the aerosol samples from a coal-fired power plant, a charcoal kiln and diesel vehicles were investigated with focusing on black carbon (BC). Aerosols from the coal-fired power plant were mostly comprised of mineral ash spheres which are heterogeneously mixed. The main components of the aerosols from coal-fired power plant were calcium compounds, iron oxide, alumino-silicate without BC. The typical combustion-generated BC which shows the shape of bunch of grapes with 20~50 nm particles which were detected in aerosol particles from diesel vehicles. The nanostructure of each BC particle shows the shape of concentric circles which is comprised of closely-packed graphene layers. Aerosols from charcoal kiln were likely condensed organic carbon generated from the low-temperature combustion process.

  • To understand particle pollution phenomena caused by vehicles, black carbon (BC) concentrations were continuously monitored using an aethalometer at a roadside in Seoul during the period of May 79 to 25, 2005. The BC concentration was highly fluctuated for a short duration, responding to the traffic situation on the road. The lowest BC concentration was observed between 2 and 5 a.m. The local highest BC concentrations were observed during the periods of both morning and evening rush hours. Change in traffic volume accounts for the trend of hourly averaged BC concentrations from the late evening to the morning. Particularly, the slower increase of BC concentration on Sunday seems to respond directly the lower traffic volume in the morning rush hours. From the comparison with a previous work, it is concluded that the BC concentration around midday hours might be dependent on the distance from a road.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the physicochemical and adsorptive characteristics of black carbon (BC) materials for cesium in case of severe nuclear accidents. The BC was prepared with a xylem of oak and pine trees incompletely combusted with different ramp rate and final temperature. Carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) atomic ratios, BET, pore structure, and zeta potential were characterized for the produced BC. A low cesium concentration ($C_w{\approx}10^{-7}M$) was used for sorption batch experiments. The H/C and O/C ratios of BC decreased with the increase of final temperature, which indicates a carbonization of the wood materials regardless of ramp rate and tree species. However, SEM images showed different pore structures depending on tree species such as steric and plate-like for oak-BC and pine-BC, respectively. The greatest sorption distribution coefficients of $K_{d,Cs}{\approx}1,200{\sim}1,800L\;kg^{-1}$ were observed for the oak-BC produced at $400^{\circ}C$, while comparatively low $K_{d,Cs}$ < $100L\;kg^{-1}$ for pine-BC. In addition, the sorption capabilities of BC declined with the increase of combustion temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$, because high temperature destroyed surface functionalities with the rise of ash components in the BC. Therefore, the sorption processes of BC for radioactive cesium are predominantly controlled by final production temperature of BC as well as raw materials (e.g., tree species).

  • Black carbon (BC) concentrations were measured with an aethalometer (AE-16, 880 nm) at time interval of 5-min at an urban site of Gwangju over a year 2008. 24-hr filter-based integrated measurements of $PM_{2.5}$ particles were also made at the same site during the winter and summer intensive periods to test any optical loading bias in the raw BC data measured by aethalometer. BC concentration was higher in winter than in summer, possibly due to increase in emissions from energy consumption and poor dispersion with reduction of boundary layer in winter. Also temporal cycles of BC indicate that short-term transient spikes were common, occurring primarily during the rush-hour periods. A similar feature was also observed in diurnal concentration cycle of CO, mainly emitted from motor vehicles. When both low wind speed and weather patterns such as mist, haze and etc were combined, high BC concentrations frequently occurred. The amount of optical loading effect described by the "k" factor showed the seasonal variation, ranging from 0.0003 to 0.0036. This implies that optical loading effect is not seen at all times. From the comparison between the filter-based elemental carbon (EC) and aethalometer BC data, it was found that the loading compensated BC values were more reasonable than the raw BC ones reported from the aethalometer.
