  • A PFCB-containing biphenylene ether polymer was synthesized and sulfonated using chlorosulfonic acid and then cast into membranes from their solutions for fuel cell applications. Sulfonation reactions were carried out by changing the molar ratio of chlorosulfonic acid and the PFCB-containing biphenylene ether polymer under fixed time and temperature. The resulting sulfonated polymers showed different sulfonation degree (SD), ion exchange capacity (IEC), and water uptake. With the increment of the content of chlorosulfonic acid, the SD, IEC, water uptake of the sulfonated polymer membranes increased. The ion conductivity of the sulfonated PFCB-containing biphenylene ether polymers was compared with that of Nafion 115.

  • Copoly(ether-ether-ester)s having flexible side chain were synthesized by polycondensation. Intrinsic viscosities of polymers were between 0.42 and 0.78dl/g in tetrachloroethane. The polymer structures were investigated by $^1H$-NMR and FT-IR, and thermal and liquid crystalline properties of polymers were measured by DSC, TGA, POM and XRD. As results of investigations, synthetic copolymers exhibited lower melting temperature than homopolymers. When the biphenylene units contents in copolymer were more than 60 mol %, nematic mesophase was observed, and the mesophase of synthetic polymers was dependent upon biphenylene content.

  • Recently epoxy resin compositions having backbone of novolac derivatives with biphenylene compounds have been used as materials of eco-freindly EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound), because the cured epoxy resin compositions show the self-extinguishing without flame retardant additives. In this study, epoxy resin compositions were prepared and cured using novolac derivateves with biphenylene. Their propeties - structures of phenol derivatives and reactivity, thermal expansion, modulus, and thermal degradation - were obtained by DSC, DMA, TMA, TGA method. When both epoxy resin and hardenr had the biphenyl novolac structure, epoxy resin compositions showed low thermal expansion, good mechanical property, and combustion retardation.

  • A series of partially fluorinated, sulfonated poly(biphenylene-co-sulfone)ether containing perfluorocyclobutane(PFCB) groups were prepared for fuel cell applications through three synthetic steps: synthesis of trifluorovinylether-terminated monomers, thermal cycloaddition and post-sulfonation. Two kinds of trifluorovinylether-terminated monomers were synthesized and statistically copolymerized via thermal cycloaddition to obtain a series of polymers containing 20-60 mol% of biphenyl units(PBS-X). The post-sulfonation of PBS-X was carried out using chlorosulfonic acid(CSA) to obtain copolymers with various sulfonation levels(SPBS-X). All the synthesized compounds, monomers and polymers were characterized by $^1H$-NMR, $^{19}F$-NMR and FT-IR. It was confirmed that the ion exchange capacity(IEC), water uptake and ion conductivity of SPBS-X increased with the increment of sulfonated biphenyl units. Particularly, SPBS-60 showed higher ion conductivity compared to Nafion$^{(R)}$-115 at 25~80 $^{\circ}C$.

  • Wholly aromatic polyesters having flexible alkoxy side chain were synthesized by direct polycondensation. The synthetic polymers have been characterized by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR. DSC, TGA, optical polarizing microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The inherent viscosities (${\eta}_{inh}$) measured in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TCE) were 0.46~2.41 dL/g. The polymers having side chain showed double melting transition, ie, solid-sanidic liquid crystalline (LC) phase transition ($T_{m1}$) and sanidic LC phase-nematic LC phase transition ($T_{m2}$). As incresing length of alkoxy side chain, phase transition temperatures decreased and solubilities in organic solvents incresed. The peaks of $2{\theta}\;{\simeq}5$ and $2{\theta}\;{\simeq}20$ in X-ray diffractograms are due to crystallization of polymer main chain and of long side chain, respectively.

  • Poly(p-phenylene pyromellitimide) and poly(4,4'-biphenylene pyromellitimide) are representatives of fully rod-like polyimides. Their structure and properties in thin films are reviewed. The polymers exhibit some excellent properties such as high molecular packing coefficient, high mechanical modulus, and low thermal expansion coefficient, and low interfacial stress, so that they are very attractive to both industry and academia. However, these polymers are very brittle and thus practically useless. Some chemical modifications to improve such drawback with a little sacrifice of the high modulus are described: i) incorporation of short side groups into the polymer backbone and ii) insertion of proper linkages into the polymer backbone.

  • Engineering thermoplastics with useful properties at elevated temperatures usually contain aromatic units in its chemical structure, especially symmetrical aryl groups such as 1, 4-phenylene, 4, 4'-biphenylene, and 2, 6-naphthalene. Aromatic groups often impart molecular rigidity, which contributes to high glass transition temperature and good thermal stability, and also to high melting point in semicrystalline polymers. • We carried out the melt copolymerization reactions of 1,2-bis(diethylamino)tetramethyldisilane with several aryldiols such as, 4,4'-biphenol, 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol, 9H-fluoren-9,9-dimethanol, and 4,4'-(9-fluorenylidene) bis(2-phenoxyethanol) to afford poly[oxy(arylene)oxy(tetramethyldisilylene)]s containing fluorescent aromatic chromophore groups in the polymer main chain: poly[oxy(4,4'-biphenylene)oxy(tetramethyldisilylene)], poly[oxy{(4,4'-isopropylidene) diphenylene}oxy(tetramethyldisilylene)], poly[oxy(9H-fluorene-9,9-dimethylene) oxy(tetramethyldisilylene)], and poly[oxy{4,4'-(9-fluorenylidene)bis(2-phenoxyethylene)}oxy(tetramethyldisilnylene)]. These prepared materials are soluble in common organic solvents such as $CHCl_3$ and THF. The obtained polymers were characterized by several spectroscopic methods such as $^1H$, $^{13}C$, and $^{29}Si$ NMR. Further, FTIR spectra of all the polymers exhibited characteristic Si-O stretching frequencies at 1014-1087 $cm^{-1}$. These polymeric materials in THF showed strong maximum absorption peaks at 268-281 nm, strong maximum excitation peaks at 263-291 nm, and strong maximum fluorescence emission bands at 314-362 nm due to the presence of tetramethyldisilylene and several arylene chromophores in the polymer main chain. TGA thermograms indicated that most of the polymers were stable up to $200^{\circ}C$ with a weight loss of 3-16% in nitrogen.
