Two dimensional analysis on the triangular fin for both the insulated fin tip and non-insulated fin tip and one dimensional analysis on that when the temperature of the fin tip is finite are made. The effect of the fin tip is shown by comparing the heat loss from the fin and the temperature along the fin length varing the non-dimensional fin length and Biot number for each three cases. The results are following. When the non-dimensional fin length is very short, the relative error of the heat loss from the fin with insulated fin tip to that from the fin with non-insulated fin tip is very high. The value of the temperature variation along the non-dimensional fin length is minimum for the finite fin tip temperature using one dimensional analysis and is maximum for the insulated fin tip using two dimensional anaysis.
This paper presents a boundary element method for obtaining approximate solutions of 2-dimensional consolidation problems based on the Biot's linear theory. Laplace transform is applied to differential equation system in order to eliminate the time dependency. The boundary integral equations in transformed space are formulated and the fundamental solutions are shown in a closed form. In order to convert the transformed solutions to the ones in real space, the Hosono's numerical Laplace transform inversion method is applied. As a numerical example, a half-space consolidation problem subjected to a strip local load is selected and the applicability of the method is demonstrated through the comparison with the exact solutions.

Convective heat transfer in a channel filled with porous media has been analyzed in this paper. The two-equation model is applied for the heat transfer analysis with the velocity profile, considering both the inertia and viscous effects. Based on a theoretical solution, the effect of the velocity profile on the convective heat transfer is investigated in detail. The Nusselt number is obtained in terms of the relevant physical parameters, such as the Biot number for the internal heat exchange, the ratio of effective conductivities between the fluid and solid phases, and hydraulic boundary layer thickness. The results indicate that the influence of the velocity profile is characterized within two regimes according to the two parameters, the Biot number and the conductivity ratio between the phases. The decrease in the heat transfer due to the hydraulic boundary layer thickness is 15% at most within a practical range of the pertinent parameters.

This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) integrated numerical model where the wave-induced pore pressures in a porous seabed around breakwater heads were investigated. Unlike previous research, the Navier-Stokes equation is solved with internal wave generation for the flow model, while Biot's dynamic seabed behaviour is considered in the seabed model. With the present model, a parametric study was conducted to examine the effects of wave and soil characteristics and breakwater configuration on the wave-induced pore pressure around breakwater heads. Based on numerical examples, it was found that the wave-induced pore pressures at breakwater heads are greater than that beneath a breakwater. The wave-induced seabed response around breakwater heads become more important with: (i) a longer wave period; (ii) a seabed with higher permeability and degree of saturation; and (iii) larger angle between the incident waves and breakwater. Furthermore, the relative difference of wave-induced pore pressure between fully-dynamic and quasi-static solutions are larger at breakwater heads than that beneath a breakwater.
The effect of the number of nodes on the heat loss from a rectangular fin for a finite difference method is studied. There are two ways for selecting nodes for the upper half fin in this finite difference method. In the first place, all the ${\Delta}x$ are the same and all the ${\Delta}y$ are the same for the entire upper half fin. Incremental length of x (i.e. ${\Delta}x$) is divided by two near the fin tip while all the ${\Delta}y$ are the same for another way. The results show that 1) About 30 nodes are enough to obtain the satisfactory exact analysis (relative error < 5%) on the heat loss for a given range of Biot number in case of short fin (i.e. $L{\leq}2$). 2) Under usual circumstances (Bi<0.1), the relative error of heat loss between using 30 nodes and 90 nodes is within 4% for given range of non-dimensional fin length. 3) The relative error of the calculated heat loss (the number of node=90) as compared to the expected exact heat loss is less then 1.5% for Bi=0.1 and L=10 while that is over 13% for Bi=1.0 and L=10.
The magnetic field in single-layer solenoid with multi-current is calculated using Elliptical function, Legendre polynomials and Biot-Savart law. The optimization conditions to a highly uniform magnetic field in the center of solenoid has been studied. The variation of magnetic field depending on radius difference was examined. The uniformity of magnetic field is compared with that obtained each multi-current method. The five-current method increases the working space within 0.02 ppm uniformity by eighty times that using single current method. And this method improves the magnetic field uniformity which is equivalent to the effect of 160 m long solenoid by using single current.

This paper describes magnetic field on power cable in underground transmission systems. Based on specification which is being used in domestic power utility, magnetic field was analyzed in accordance with line arrangement, line burial depth and phase spacing. Magnetic field magnitude and its trend were understood in each circuit type such as double circuits, triple circuits and quadruple circuits of underground transmission systems. In addition, magnetic field was analyzed according to phase arrangement changing in each circuit. Finally, the proper phase arrangement configuration type was suggested by the evaluation of analysis result. Magnetic field was calculated by using Biot-Savart's law. According to the evaluated magnetic fields based on phase layout configuration in each circuit, it figured out that each of magnetic fields was different. As a result, this paper proposes a proper phase layout configuration for generating minimum magnetic field. It is evaluated that the phase layout configuration in each circuit proposed in this paper can be used at actual underground transmission systems.
The total embankment settlement consists of three stages: the initial settlement, the primary consolidation settlement, and the secondary consolidation settlement. The total embankment settlement is largely controlled by the primary consolidation settlement, which is usually computed with numerical models that implement Biot's theory of consolidation. The key parameter that affects the primary consolidation time is the coefficient of permeability. Due to the complex stress and strain states in the foundation soil under the embankment, to be able to predict the consolidation time more precisely, aside from porosity-dependency, the strain-dependency of the coefficient of permeability should be also taken into account in numerical analyses. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional plane strain numerical model of embankment primary consolidation, which implements Biot's theory of consolidation with both porosity-dependent and strain-dependent coefficient of permeability. We perform several numerical simulations. First, we demonstrate the influence of the strain-dependent coefficient of permeability on the computed results. Next, we validate our numerical model by comparing computed results against in-situ measurements for two road embankments: one near the city of Saga, and the other near the city of Boston. Finally, we give our concluding remarks.

When we inject a current into an electrically conducting subject such as a human body, voltage and current density distributions are formed inside the subject. The current density within the subject and injection current in the lead wires generate a magnetic field. This magnetic flux density within the subject distorts phase of spin-echo magnetic resonance images. In Magnetic Resonance Current Density Imaging (MRCDI) technique, we obtain internal magnetic flux density images and produce current density images from $\bigtriangledown{\times}B/\mu_\theta$. This internal information is used in Magnetic Resonance Electrical Impedance Tomography (MREIT) where we try to reconstruct a cross-sectional resistivity image of a subject. This paper describes numerical techniques of computing voltage. current density, and magnetic flux density within a subject due to an injection current. We use the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Biot-Savart law to calculate these variables from three-dimensional models with different internal resistivity distributions. The numerical analysis techniques described in this paper are used in the design of MRCDI experiments and also image reconstruction a1gorithms for MREIT.
The distribution of magnetic flux density of electro-magnetic chucks may clarify the clamping characteristics, which is strongly related to the machining efficiency and machining accuracy in surface grinding machine. Therefore the distribution of the normal and the tangential components of magnetic flux density have been analyzed theoretically. It appears that the normal component of magnetic flux density increases and the tangential component of magnetic flux density increases as the ratio of the separator width to the pitch, e/p decreases. The results seem to increase the stability and uniformity of normal component of magnetic flux density for the decreased e/p.
