  • In this study, we evaluated the dose response of MAGAT (Methacrylic Acid Gelatin gel and THPC) normoxic polymer gel dosimeters based on the X-ray CT scanner. To perform this study, we determined the proper ratio of the gel composition and acquired X-ray scan parameters. MAGAT gel dosimeters were manufactured using MAA (MethacrylicAcid) and gelatin of various concentration, irradiated up to 20 Gy. We obtained the 20 CT images from the irradiated gel dosimeters by using on a Phillips Brilliance Big Bore CT scanner with the various scan parameters. This CT images were used to determine the $N_{CT}$-dose response, dose sensitivity and dose resolution As an amount of MAA and gelatin were increase, the slope and intercept were increase in each MAGAT gel dosimeter with various concentration of the $N_{CT}$-dose response curve. The dose sensitivity was $0.38{\pm}0.08$ to $0.859{\pm}0.1$ and increased were amount of the MAA was increased or the gelatin was decreased. However, the change of gelatin concentration was very small compare to MAA. The Dose resolution ($D_{\Delta}^{95%}$) varies considerably from 2.6 to 6 Gy, dependent on dose resolution and CT image noise. The slope and dose sensitivity was almost ident verywith the variation of the tube voltage, tube current and slice thickness in the dose response curve, but the noise (standard deviation of averamalg CT number) was decreased when the tube voltage, tube current and slice thickness are increase. The optimal MAGAT polymer gel dosimeter based on the CT were evaluated to determine the CT imaging scan parameters of the maximum tube voltage, tube current and slice thickness (commonly used in clinical) using the composition ratio of a 9% MAA, 8% gelatin and 83% water. This study could get proper composition ratio and scan parameter evaluating dose response of MAGAT normoxic polymer gel dosimeter using CT scanner.

  • Non-curable rubberized polymer asphalt waterproof coating materials in Korea and China are manufactured without advanced quality control techniques and common standard, And they are exposed consistent water leakage problems. Import and application of Korean waterproofing products and installation methods is difficult in the present situation as the Chinese standard(JC/T 2428) is different in nature with the Korean counterpart products, And quality assurance is inevitable based on mutual standards. In order to resolve this issue, alternatives such as using standards provided by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) are generally employed, but there is no such ISO standard as a waterproof material for non-curable rubberized polymer asphalt material. Furthermore, it is unreasonable to develop the ISO standard for rubber asphalt seals for exchange in terms of time and cost. This study proposes that the establishment of a quality standard that can be applied for both countries will be required via an joint international standard that outlines the properties of materials if applied in mutual trade exchange.

  • A highly porous Biphasic Calcium Phosphate (BCP) scaffold was fabricated by the sponge replica method with a microwave sintering technique. The BCP scaffold had interconnected pores ranging from $80\;{\mu}m$ to $1000\;{\mu}m$, which were similar to natural cancellous bone. To enhance the mechanical properties of the porous scaffold, infiltration of polycaprolactone (PCL) was employed. The microstructure of the BCP scaffold was optimized using various volume percentages of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) for the infiltration process. PCL successfully infiltrated into the hollow space of the strut formed after the removal of the polymer sponge throughout the degassing and high pressure steps. The microstructure and material properties of the BCP scaffold (i.e., pore size, morphology of infiltrated and coated PCL, compressive strength, and porosity) were evaluated. When a 30 vol% of PMMA was used, the PCL-BCP scaffold showed the highest compressive strength. The compressive strength values of the BCP and PCL-BCP scaffolds were approximately 1.3 and 2MPa, respectively. After the PCL infiltration process, the porosity of the PCL-BCP scaffold decreased slightly to 86%, whereas that of the BCP scaffold was 86%. The number of pores in the $10\;{\mu}m$ to $20\;{\mu}m$ rage, which represent the pore channel inside of the strut, significantly decreased. The in-vitro study confirmed that the PCL-infiltrated BCP scaffold showed comparable cell viability without any cytotoxic behavior.

  • Plasma protein adsorption is the first event in the blood-material interaction and influenc- es subsequent platelet adhesion towards thlㅈombus formation. Thiㅈomboembolic events are strongly influenced by surface characteristics of materials and fluid dynamics inside the blood pump. In vitro flow visualizaion and an amimal experiment with the moving actuator type TAH were Performed in order to investigate fluid dynamic effects on the protein adsorption. The diffel'encl level, j of shear rate inside the ventricle Lvere determined by consid- ering the direction of the major opening of four healt valves in the implanted TAH and the visualized flow patterns as well. Each ventricle of the explanted TAH was sectionalized into 12 segments according to the shear rate level. The adsorbed protein on each segment was quantified using the ELISA method after soaking in 2% (wye)SDS/PBS for two days. Adsorbed protein layer thicknesses Itvere measured by the Immunogotd method under TEM. The SEM observation show that right ventricle (RV) , immobilized with albumin, displayed different degrees of platelet adhesion on each segment, whereas the left ventricle (LV), grafted by PEO-sulronate, indicated nearly , iame platelet adhesion behavior, regardless of shear rates. The surface concentrations of adsorbed proteins in the low shear rate region are hlghel'than those in the high region, which was confirmed statistically. A modified adsorption model of plasma protein onto polyurethane surface was suggested by considering the effect of the fluid dynamic characteristics.

  • The interfacial bonding energy between laser surface treated HA layer and Ti alloy substrate was investigated using a mechanical push-out tester. The initial slope of shear-stress and reduced displacement curves, maximum interfacial bond strength and bonding energy were calculated from results of the push-out test. The calculated initial slpoes are 38 MPa for the Ti alloy(A), 65 MPa for the sandblast finished specimen(B), 95 MPa for the HA plasma spray coated specimen and 49 MPa for the laser surface treated specimen(D). The maximum interfacial bonding strength are 3 MPa for the A, 19 MPa for the B, 20 MPa for the C, 10 MPa for the D. The interfacial bonding energies are $3.3\times10^{-9}J/mm^2$ for the A, $15.5\times10^{-9}J/mm^2$ for the B, $15.6\times10^{-9}J/mm^2$ for the C and $18.3\times10^{-9}J/mm^2$ for the D. Microscopic observation shows that the breaking of the laser treated specimen had been occured through the boundary between HA layer and polymer resin, but the untreated specimen had been occured through the inside of HA coating layer.

  • We examined the effects of ${\beta}$-glucan-reinforced PLGA film and scaffold on HDFs (human dermal fibroblast) attachment and proliferation. The PLGA films were prepared by simple solvent-casting method. The prepared films were grafted with $(1{\to}3)(1{\to}6)-{\beta}-glucan$ in various ratios after plasma treatment on surface. The surface of the film was characterized by contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR). The amount of $(1{\to}3)(1{\to}6)-{\beta}-glucan$ in the prepared film was indirectly determined by phenol-sulfuric acid method. The HDFs (Human dermal fibroblasts) were used to evaluate the cell attachment and proliferation on PLGA specimens before and after plasma/${\beta}-glucan$ treatment. The result showed that the plasma treated groups exhibited more mont of ${\beta}-glucan$ might be grafted than the non plasma treated groups. Cell attachment was significantly enhanced in the plasma/${\beta}-glucan$ grafted group after 4 hours incubation (p<0.05) due to the improved hydrophilicity and cytoactivity effect of the ${\beta}-glucan$. The cell proliferation of plasma/${\beta}-glucan$ (2mg/ml) grafted group was the highest rate among the groups (p<0.05).

  • The incorporation of heparin to biomaterials has been widely studied to improve the biocompatibility (blood and cell) of biomaterials surfaces. In our laboratory, various kinds of heparinized polymers including heparinized thermosensitive polymers ($Tetronic^{(R)}$-PLA(PCL)-heparin copolymers) and star-shaped PLA-heparin copolymers have been developed as a novel blood/cell compatible material. These heparinized polymers have demonstrated their unique properties due to bound heparin, resulting in improved biocompatibility. These heparinized bioactive polymers can be applied as blood and tissue compatible biodegradable materials in variable medical application such as tissue engineering and drug delivery system.

  • A new neural network architecture for the recognition of patterns from images is proposed, which is partially based on the results of physiological studies. The proposed network is composed of multi-layers and the nerve cells in each layer are connected by spatial filters which approximate receptive fields in optic nerve fields. In the proposed method, patterns recognition for complicated images is carried out using global features as well as local features such as lines and end-points. A new generating method of matched filers representing global features is proposed in this network.

  • This paper proposes an ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) based artificial muscle to be applicable to the Myoelectric hand prosthesis. The IPMC consists of a thin polymer membrane with metal electrodes plated chemically on both faces, and it is widely applying to the artificial muscle because it is driven by relatively low input voltage. The control commands for the IPMC-based artificial muscle is given by electromyographic (EMG) signals obtained from human forearm. By an intended contraction of the human flexor carpi ulnaris and extensor carpi ulnaris muscles, we investigated the actuation behavior of the IPMC-based artificial muscle. To obtain higher actuation force of the IPMC, the single layered as thick as $800[{\mu}m]$ or multi-layered IPMC of which each layer can be as thick as $178[{\mu}m]$ are prepared. As a result, the bending force was up to the maximum 12[gf] from 1[gf] by actuating the single layered IPMC with $178[{\mu}m]$, but the bending displacement was reduced to 6[mm] from 30[mm]. The experimental results using an implemented IPMC control system show a possibility and a usability of the bio-mimetic artificial muscle.

  • Core-Shell polymers of silicone dioxide-styrene system were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization. In inorganic/organic Core-Shell composite particle polymerization, silicone dioxide adsorbed by surfactant sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (EU-DO133L) was prepared initially and then core silicone dioxide was encapsulated emulsion by sequential emulsion polymerization using styrene at the addition of potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. We found that $SiO_2$ core shell of $SiO_2$/styrene structure was formed when polymerization of styrene was conducted on the surface of $SiO_2$ particles, and the concentration sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (EU-DO133L) was 0.5~2.0g. The structure of core-shell polymer were investigated by measuring to the thermal decomposition of polymer composite using thermogravimetric analyzer and morphology of latex by scanning electron microscope(SEM).
