Over the past few decades, there has been increasing research and commercial activity in invasive and non-invasive biomedical technology. One important challenge to developing these devices involves the increasing density of electrical interconnects. Resistance spot welding is limited in the density of interconnect based on either the size of welding head or the positional precision with which a weld can be made. Development of an automated laser microwelding system would permit the continued advancement of these important biomedical technologies. The objective of this work is to demonstrate the application of pseudo-pulse Nd:YAG laser technology as an alternative to resistance spot welding in performing electrical interconnection within biomedical products. To date, some experiments have been conducted by using a pseudo-pulse 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, a successful weld of a 25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter Pt/Ir wire to a 316 stainless steel shim can be made. Another application involves welding clips, which may be used for external interconnection, to electrodeposited nickel domes that make particular interconnections to specific insulated wires within a cable. These results show a great deal of promise for developing such a process.
Laser has been widely used in various fields of medicine. Recently, noninvasive low-level laser therapeutic medical devices have been introduced in market. However, low-level laser cannot deliver enough photon density to expect positive therapeutic results in deep tissue layer due to the light scattering property in tissue. In order to overcome the limitation, this study was aimed to develop a negative pressure applied low-level laser probe to optimize laser transmission pattern and therefore, to improve photon density in soft tissue. In order to evaluate the possibility of clinical application of the developed laser probe, ex-vivo experiments were performed with porcine skin samples and laser transmissions were quantitatively measured as a function of tissue compression. The laser probe has an air suction hole to apply negative pressure to skin, a transparent plastic body to observe variations of tissue, and a small metallic optical fiber guide to support the optical fiber when negative pressure was applied. By applying negative pressure to the laser probe, the porcine skin under the metallic optical fiber guide is compressed down and, at the same time, low-level laser is emitted into the skin. Finally, the diffusion images of laser in the sample were acquired by a CCD camera and analyzed. Compared to the peak intensity without the compression, the peak intensity of laser increased about $2{\sim}2.5$ times and FWHM decreased about $1.67{\sim}2.85$ times. In addition, the laser peak intensity was positively and linearly increased as a function of compression. In conclusion, we verified that the developed low-level laser probe can control the photon density in tissue by applying compression, and therefore, its potential for clinical applications.

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) has been utilized for prototype manufacturing of functional metal components for years now. During this period the surface quality, mechanical properties, detail resolution and easiness of the process have been improved to the level suitable for direct production of complex metallic components for various applications. The paper will present the latest DMLS technology utilizing EOSINT M270 laser sintering machine and EOSTYLE support generation software for direct and rapid production of complex shaped metallic components for various purposes. The focus of the presentation will be in rapid manufacturing of customized biomedical implants and surgical devices of the latest stainless steel, titanium and cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys. In addition to biomedical applications, other application areas where complex metallic parts with stringent requirements are being needed will be presented.
Various methods have been proposed for enhancing the contrast of laser speckle contrast image (LSCI) in subcutaneous blood flow measurements. However, the LSCI still suffers from low image contrast due to tissue turbidity. Herein, a physicochemical tissue optical clearing (PCTOC) method was employed to enhance the contrast of LSCI. Ex vivo and in vivo experiments were performed with porcine skin samples and male ICR mice, respectively. The ex vivo LSCIs were obtained before and 90 min after the application of the PCTOC and in vivo LSCIs were obtained for 60 min after the application of the PCTOC. In order to obtain the skin recovery images, saline was applied for 30 min after the application of the PCTOC was completed. The visible appearance of the tubing under ex vivo samples and the in vivo vasculature gradually enhanced over time. The LSCI increased as a function of time after the application of the PCTOC in both ex vivo and in vivo experiments, and properly recovered to initial conditions after the application of saline in the in vivo experiment. The LSCI combined with the PCTOC was greatly enhanced even in deep vasculature. It is expected that similar results will be obtained in in vivo human studies.
Femtosecond laser induced shock generation in water and vitreous humor of enucleated porcine eyeball was investigated. When focusing the femtosecond laser into the liquid mediums, the acoustic waves with a frequency of about 15.6kHz could be observed by using wide-band microphone. The amplitude of the acoustic signals from water has attained a maximum under a laser power of about 5mW. Further increment of the power results in a decrement of the acoustic signals due to nonlinear optical process including filamentation of laser beam. We have further investigated the effect of femtosecond laser induced acoustic waves by applying the laser pulse into enucleated porcine eyeball. The comparative studies on both healthy and diseased eyeballs led us propose that the femtosecond laser pulses could be utilized as a novel tools for treatment of partially detached retina layers from their choroid structures.
[ $1.06/1.32{\mu}m$ ] dual-wavelength medical laser was developed and preliminary clinical comparisons at these two wavelengths were performed for dental application. We could develop a compact laser system 1) by lasing two wavelengths from the same Nd:YAG rod, and 2) by introducing high-voltage switching power supply modules. Experiment on gingiva of pig jaw showed higher thermal damage at $1.32{\mu}m$. Depending on particular procedures, each wavelength has its own advantages and disadvantages. For cutting, however, using conical tips rather than bare fibers provided better results with low threshold of cutting energy and less surrounding thermal damage. Appling light-absorbing dye on target area appeared to induce more damage during laser irradiation. However, histological studies showed no significant difference whether dye was applied or not.
Soft x-ray microscopy provides a unique set of capabilities in-between those of visible light and electron microscopy. It has long been recognized that nature provides a 'water window' spectral region between the K shell x-ray absorption edges of carbon (~290eV) and oxygen (~540eV), where organic materials show strong absorption and phase contrast, while water is relatively non-absorbing. This enables imaging of hydrated biological specimens that are several microns thick with high intrinsic contrast using x-rays with a wavelength of 2.3~4.4nm. Soft X-ray microscopy is therefore well suited to the study of specimens like single biological cells. The most direct advantage of X-ray microscope is their high spatial resolution when compared with visible light microscopes, combined with an ability to image hydrated specimens that are several microns with a minimum of preparation. Our study describes the conceptual design of soft x-ray microscope system based on a laser-based source for biomedical application with high resolution ($\leq$50nm) and short exposure time ($\leq$30sec).
