  • To investigate the relationship between BMD, micro-structural and mechanical properties in intertrochanteric trabecular bone, the PIXI-mus2 system, micro-CT and FE model were used. The purpose of this study were (1) to apply high-resolution imaging techniques (micro-CT imaging) in combination with new computer modeling techniques (FEA) to quantify 3D microstructural and biomechanical properties of trabecular bone in the intertrochanteric region, and (2) determine if the prediction of bone elastic constant can be improved with structural index.

  • A cyto-indentation technique was used to obtain the biomechanical compressive compliance property of an chondrocyte cell attached to glass surface, which was tried to generate joint cartilage by tissue engineering. Piezo-transducer system and dual photo-diode system were used to conduct mechanical indentation through displacement-controlled testing and the measurement of corresponding cell reaction force. The Poisson's ratio of 0.37 was quoted from other report. The compressive compliance of chondrocyte, that was determined by elastic contact theory, was 1.38${\pm}$0.057 kPa. This value is 30% higher than that of MG63 osteoblast-like cell. The cyto-indentation technique employed in this study is so precise that it can quantify the biomechanical property of single cell.

  • Human posture prediction and motion simulation methods try to solve inverse kinematic problems using the optimization technique based on the concept of minimum principle. It is very important to select a cost function which relfects the human posture acurately. In this study, lifting postures were predicted using the five biomechanical cost functions and compared with real human postures in order to evaluate the predictivities of the cost functions. The result showed that all the biomechanical cost functions used in this study could not predict lifting postures accurately. The cost function which minimizes the sum of joint moments showed the smallest mean prediction error, while the one which minimizes the MUR showed statistically better performance.

  • This study investigated the length-tension and velocity-force relations of the torso erectors. A myoelectric based approach was used wherein a dynamic biomechanical model incorporating active and passive tissue charactreistics provided music kinematic estimates during controlled sagittal plan extension motions. A double linear optimization formulation from the literatured provided muscle tension estimates. The data supported a linear length-tension relation toward full flexion for both the erector spinae and latissimus muscles. Velocity trends agreed with that predicted by Hill's exponential relation. The results have implications for muscle tension estimation in biomechanical torso modeling, and suggest a possible low back pain injury mechanism.

  • The compressed fracture of spine caused by osteoporosis is one of the most frequent diseases in bone fracture. Recently the vertebroplasty has drawn much attention as a medical treatment for the compressed fracture of spine, which strengthens the vertebral body and corrects deformity, and relieves pain in patients by injecting bone cement. The finite element analysis is used to investigate the vertebroplasty quantitatively. Previous works with finite element analysis have drawbacks in their simplified models geometry of vertebral body and with material properties of bone. In this paper the exact geometry of vertebral body has been constructed from medical image data and the biomechanical property changes of vertebral body in vertebroplasty have been investigate by using three dimensional finite element analysis.

  • When markers attached to body segment are captured by camera, they generally have many noises due to intrinsic biomechanical characteristics. In this study, one technique to reduce these noises is suggested, which constructs a local coordinates of the markers using time-mean lengths of the measured markers and calculates a linear transformation matrix of the interesting body using least square error technique. This matrix is decomposed into two matrices of rotation and flexibility. Suggested method does well for 3 markers or more, and shows consistent results without regard to choice of reference axis.

  • The aim of this study was biomechanical analysis of shelf operation in patients with dysplastic hip joint by finite element contact analysis. Two dimensional CT images were used to construct the finite element models to analyze the contact pressure, and the 3D expansion of the Ninomiya's method was used in the calculation of the resultant force in the hip joint. The surgery recovered the center-edge angles to the normal anatomical range and increased the contact areas in two patients. The maximum contact pressures and von-mises stresses were decreased. The present study provides the biomechanical guideline of optimal surgical parameters to maximize the surgical efficiency and the clinical outcomes in dysplastic hip joint using the shelf operation.

  • Existing footwear biomechanics studies rely on simplified kinetics and kinematics, plantar pressure and muscle electromyography measurements. Because of the complexity of foot-shoe interface and individualized subject response with different footwear, consistent results regarding the biomechanical performance of footwear or footwear components can yet be achieved. The computational approach can be an efficient and economic alternative to study the biomechanical interactions of foot and footwear. Continuous advancement in numerical techniques as well as computer technology has made the finite element method a versatile and successful tool for biomechanics researchdue to its capability of modelling irregular geometrical structures, complex material properties, and complicated loading and boundary conditions. Finite element analysis offers asystematic and economic alternative in search of more in-depth biomechanical information such as the internal stress and strain distributions of foot and footwear structures. In this paper, the current establishments and applications of the computational approach for footwear design and evaluation are reviewed.

  • Pressure distributions of the soft tissue are valuable for understanding and diagnosing the disease characteristics due to the mechanical loading. Our system measures dynamic pressure distributions in real-time under the general PC environment, and analyzes various foot disorders. Main features of the developed system are as follows: (1) With the resistive pressure sensor matrix of 40${\times}$40 cells, the data is sent to the PC with the maximum sampling rate of 40 frames/sec. (2) For each frame, contact area, pressure and force are analyzed by graphic forms. Thus, various biomechanical parameters are easily determined at specific areas of interests. (3) A certain stance phase can be chosen for the analysis from the continuous walking, and the detailed biomechanical analysis can be done according to an arbitrary line dividing anterior/posterior or medial/lateral plantar areas. (4) The center of pressure (COP) is calculated and traced from the pressure distribution data, and thus the movement of the COP is monitored in detail. A few experiments revealed that our system successfully measured the dynamic plantar distribution during normal walking.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the biomechanical effects of corset and back brace for low back pain syndroms patients. The subjects of this study were 69 patients with low back pain syndroms who had been hospitalized or were visited out-patient department of the rehabilitation hospital, college of medicine, Yonsei University, from October 5, 1995 through November 5, 1995. Clinical results and datum were obtained by phone calls and chart reviews of low back pain patients. The results were as follows: 1) Fifty - nine subjects recovered over a good grade (85.6%). 2) The standing workers had a little effect of brace for low back pain. 3) After using a corset and back brace, the test of SLR increased from 36.23% to 72.47%, and the ability of ambulation improved from 40.57% to 85.5%. In conclusion, the biomechanical effects of corset and back brace for low back pain patients were found to be decrease pains and improve posture and ADL function.
