  • Two new species, Pentathyone kojinensis n. sp. and Pseudocnus pawsoni n. sp. belonging to the families Sclerodactylidae and Cucumariidae are described. In addition, four species, Thyone bicornis, Thyone fusus chinensis, Thyone micra, and Molpadia changi, are reported as new records from Korea. Pentathyone kojinensis n. sp. closely resembles Cucumaria mirabilis Theel and C. constrica Ohshima in ossicle form, but the latter two species are clearly distinguished from the new species in having the posterior processes of the calcareous ring in several fragments, rather than stout and entire. Pseudocnus pawsoni n. sp. is similar to Cucumaria koraeensis Ostergren in general features and ossicle morphology though it has not biscuit-shaped plates. However, Cucumaria koraeensis has ten tentacles of the same size, unlike Pseudocnus pawsoni n. sp. in which the two ventral tentacles are much smaller than the remaining eight.

  • Biologically active porcine Interleukin-2(poIL-2) was produced from in vitro and in viva baculovirus expression system, namely the Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (ACNPV)-cell culture system and the Hybrid nucler polthedrosis virus (HyNPV)-sillkworm larva system. The concentration of the recombinant poIL-2(rpoIL-2) in the larvae hemolymph was 1 to 3 mg/mL, which was about 7 to 20 times those of the cell culture systems. The level of this expression efficiency is equal to that with transgenic livestock, secretion products in milk.

  • The sequential assessment model describes a fight between two conspecific as an ongoing statistical sampling process, which makes it possible to predict fight length or repetition number of a behavioral element depending on relative RHP (resource holding potential: e.g. weight or fighting ability). We staged contests between males of common freshwater gobies to test some predictions of this model. Fights proceeded in a consistent sequence of phases. Most contests began with two contestants adopting lateral display, and then escalated to intense physical contacts. The length of contests was negatively correlated with weight difference between the contestants. The duration of complete phases was, however, independent of weight, and the prior information gained during complete phases did not appear to affect subsequent phases of the fight. Our results show that the contests of common freshwater gobies are well predicted by the sequential assessment model.

  • The skin structure of Misgurnus mizolepis was studied based on the microanatomical investigation of skin fragments taken from four regions. The epidermis was distinguished by two types of skin glands, a small mucous cell and a large club cell. The mucous cell was acid sulfomucins (some sialomucins) but the club cell did not give any histochemical tests for mucosubstances. The presence of a well defined lymphatic system with small lymphocytes was established in the stratum germinativum layer of the epidermis. A large number of blood capillaries run very close to each other just below the basement membrane, and a definite area giving AB and PAS positive was present between the basement membrane and scale. These structural features of skin in M. mizolepis seem to be closely related with cutaneous respiration.

  • This study was conducted to find out how young black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) recognize adult voice signals after hatching. For the experiment, adult voice recorded in the natural environment was played back at controlled intervals and intensity (dB) to 15 young gulls that were artificially hatched in the laboratory. The chirirah call frequency of young gulls increased as the intensity of the mew call increased. The chirirah response of the control group was highest to the mew call at intervals of 1.8s. The adult long ca11 and alarm call also showed similar results to the mew call when the interval and intensity were manipulated similar to the mew call. Based on the results of this experiment, it is assumed that the young black-tailed gulls recognize adult voice signals based on the simple structure of adult voice signals, that is, the interval and intensity of the voice.

  • The pheromonal repelling response occurs when a combination of female and male pheromones is found to be less attractive to courting males than are female pheromones alone. This repelling response may act to conserve a courting males’reproductive fitness by minimizing ma1e-male competition within a courting group. Recently, a Pheromonal repelling response was first reported for vertebrates in the red-spotted newt, Notophthalmus viride-scens. A male cloacal pheromone, a ∼33 kDa protein, was identified as a repelling pheromone. In this study, to determine whether both the main olfactory epithelium (MOE) and/or the vomeronasal organ (VNO) are activated by the repelling pheromone, we recorded electrical field potentials from both olfactory epithelia while applying the repelling pheromone. The repelling pheromone induced electrical responses from both olfactory organs, and the magnitude of the response was greater in the VNO than in the MOE. Our results suggest that both the VNO and MOE may be involved in the pheromonal repelling response.

  • Four new species of the genus Amynthas are described from Korea: Amynthas mujuensis sp. nov., Amynthas assimilis sp. nov., Amynthas moakensis sp. nov., and Amynthas sangumburi sp. nov. The intestinal caeca are of simple type and genital markings lacking in all four species. Amynthas mujuensis sp. nov. has male field with large oval papillae, each papilla with longitudinal seminal groove; paired spermathecal pores present in 6/7, 7/8 dorsally. Amynthas assimilis sp. nov. has mare field composed of paired symmetrical pear-shaped pads with broad ends laterally, axes of symmetry diagonally oriented towards posterior; spermathecal pores in 5/6, 6/7. Amynthas moakensis sp. nov. has male pores on small porophores surrounded by swollen concentric furrows, with the spermathecal pores in 6/7, 7/8, 8/9, ventrally. Amynthas sangumburi sp. nov. has male pores centered on 0.8 mm circular flat porophores, with the spermathecal pores in 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, 8/9, laterally.

  • CD30 is a member of tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily and has pleiotropic functions including cell activation, proliferation, differentiation, and death, depending on cell types and stage of differentiation. Although CD30 expression has been described mainly in hematopoietic tissues, several types of nonhematopoietic tumors including embryonic carcinoma and germ-cell tumors express CD30. We examined CD30 distribution in the testis and epididymis from wild type and CD30-deficient mice. In the testis, spermatogonia, spermatocytes and Sertoli cells expressed CD30, but not in spermatids. Spermatogonia and spermatocytes near the basement membrane strongly reacted to anti-CD30. In the epididymis, CD30 expression was exclusively observed in luminal epithelia and some interstitial cells. Taken together, these results show a spatio-temporal regulation of CD30 expression in mouse testis and epididymis and suggest a possible role of CD30 in spermatogonia and spermatocytes.

  • Tenuidraconema koreensis, a new species of free-living marine nematodes, collected from the subtidal coarse sediments and various invertebrates of Namae, is described. The new species differs from T. fiersi Decraemer, 1989, the only other species in the genus, by having the combination of the following characters: the position of twelve cephalic adhesion tubes in both sexes (anterior six cephalic adhesion tubes inserted on the rostrum and posterior six inserted on the body annules), and the number of posterior sublateral adhesion tubes (12 in male and 13 in female) and posterior subventral adhesion tubes (15 in male and 19 in female). This paper contains the description of the new species with illustrations and scanning electron microscope (SEM) photomicrographs. This is the first discovery of the monotypic genus Tenuidraconema outside the type locality.

  • $\beta$-Glucans, which were isolated from sangwhang (Phellinus linteus), were subjected to reductive amination and the biological properties of the derivative were investigated. The degree of substitution of the aminated sangwhang $\beta$-glucan was calculated by elemental analysis to be 1.13. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) experiments showed that the aminated derivative increased nitric oxide production. In addition, the amination enhanced in vitro cytotoxic activities against HT1080 and SNU-C2A cell lines. Thus, the aminated derivative is shown to enhance immune systems by the incorporation of amino groups into the polymer structure.
